‘The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners’ Was PSVR’s Top Downloaded Game in May

Skydance Interactive’s latest VR game, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners (2020), launched to critical acclaim on PC VR back in January. Subsequently arriving on PSVR in May, the zombie horror-survival game seems to be celebrating notable success as the top PSVR download last month for both the US and Europe.

Although we haven’t touched base with the PSVR version of the game since it arrived in early May, it seems to be faring well on the platform. The game holds a near [5/5] user rating on the PlayStation Store, which is out of 520 users.

As for its PC VR version, we gave The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners a [9/10] in our review thanks to its engrossing story, excellent physics-based zombie killing action, and an immersive atmosphere that feels as gritty and deadly serious as The Walking Dead comic books.

Another newcomer for the month of May was the impressively violent physics-based gladiator sim GORN, developed by Broforce studio Free Lives.

GORN managed to take the second-most downloaded game on PSVR in the US, and third spot in Europe, a feat any way you slice it considering the muscle-man-slaughter-machine launched a full two weeks after The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners did on the platform, giving it less time to make up ground.

‘No Man’s Sky’ is Getting Cross-play Support on PSVR & SteamVR Headsets

After adding VR support and a host of new features, one of the biggest redemption stories in gaming history still isn’t over. No Man’s Sky is finally getting cross-play support for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, which of course includes PSVR and SteamVR headsets.

Developer Hello Games today announced on their official blog that the space faring sim No Man’s Sky is getting cross-platform multiplayer support starting Thursday, June 11th.

“A tremendous amount of work has gone into this update and the underlying technology and systems,” Hello Games founder Sean Murray says. “We’ve moved to an entirely new networking architecture, with more flexibility for the future, allowing players to play together regardless of platform. I’m very proud of the team that has worked so hard to make this happen.”

Murray additionally says new content updates, “large and small for the future” are in the pipeline.

Tomorrow’s update comes hot on the heels of the game’s April update, which brought bipedal mechs to the game.

‘World of Darkness’ Horror Game ‘Afterlife’ Coming to All Major VR Platforms

Fast Travel Games, the studio behind Apex Construct (2018) and Budget Cuts 2 (2019), today announced its next VR project, a horror game based in the ‘World of Darkness’ universe called Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife.

Fans of the World of Darkness universe and its many tabletop role-playing games are no doubt familiar with Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse.

Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife is said to follow in the footsteps of its 1994-era tabletop RPG namesake by placing you in the modern Barclay Mansion and putting you in the ghostly shoes of a Wraith who unravels the mysteries “that await beyond the Shroud.”

Erik Odeldahl, Creative Director at Fast Travel Games, says that horror games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Alien: Isolation have influenced the studio to create a similar “narrative-driven, exploration-focused” horror title in the World of Darkness universe.

The game, which doesn’t have a release date yet, is slated to arrive on “all major VR platforms,” Fast Travel says.

A gameplay reveal and details are said to arrive during the Gamescom Now, which starts August 27th. Hopefully we’ll be getting a release date then too.

‘Iron Man VR’ Demo Now Available on PSVR, New Hardware Bundle Announced

Iron Man VR on PSVR was delayed several times earlier this year, but last week the game finally got a firm release date of July 3rd, 2020. We caught wind only a few hours ago that Sony was likely to release an Iron Man VR demo on PSN prior to launch. Now the company not only announced its releasing a new Iron Man VR hardware bundle, but the demo is also available starting today.

Update (11:00 AM ET): The demo is now available here for download, which comes with a free Molten Lava Armor Deco if you purchase the full game.

The demo includes:

“Malibu” tutorial mission
Interactive Stark Jet cinematic starring Tony, Friday & Pepper Potts
“Out of the Blue” Stark Jet gameplay mission
Flight Challenge optional mission
Advanced Combat Challenge optional mission

Sony also announced that a new PSVR hardware bundle is coming, which includes the PSVR headset, PS Camera, two PS Move motion controllers, Iron Man VR on Blu-ray disc, and a PSVR Demo Disc.

The bundle, which will be available for pre-order starting today, is set to be available in the US, Canada, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and the Dominican Republic for $350 / $450 CDN (or local equivalent).

The EU and UK are getting a smaller hardware bundle, which includes two PS Move motion controllers and a physical copy of Iron Man VR for €100 /£85, available for pre-order starting today.

Original Article (3:40 AM ET): Back in March, Gematsu reported on an Iron Man VR Demo – Demo listing that appeared in the PlayStation Store. The game’s developer hadn’t confirmed the existence of such a demo, and when the game was met with an “indefinite delay” earlier this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it wasn’t clear if the demo would ever see the light of day.

Shortly after a new July 3rd release date was confirmed, Gematsu today spotted that the unreleased Iron Man VR Demo – Demo listing got an update, and can now be found in the Asia, Japan, US, and Europe regions of the PlayStation Store.

The 7.8GB package can’t be accessed publicly yet, but the recent update suggests it’s being finalized in preparation for an eventual release.

We went to do some digging on our own and found some additional evidence that the Iron Man VR demo will likely get released. Although the official US page for Iron Man VR doesn’t appear to have any mention of a demo for the game, text in the website’s source code meant for search engines references its existence: “Explore Marvel’s Iron Man VR game detail, demo, images, videos, reviews.”

Hands-on: 'Iron Man VR' Shows Huge Potential with Innovative Flying Mechanics

Again, we don’t have an official announcement of an Iron Man VR demo yet (see update), but it seems quite likely that we’ll get one either ahead of the game’s launch or right around release. And while we can’t be sure what the demo will contain, we’d venture to guess that it could be a similar cut of the game that we saw in a press preview last year. In that impressive demo we got to see a tutorial for the game’s innovative flight mechanics and got to save someone from a crashing plane.

Iron Man VR is set for a release date on July 3rd, 2020 and is available for pre-order; the game’s standard edition will cost $40. The title is being developed by Camouflaj and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment as a PlayStation VR exclusive.

‘Beat Saber’ is Getting 20 New Free Beat Maps Next Week

If you’ve been looking for more content to play on Beat Saber (2018), you won’t have to wait too long, as Beat Games today announced that the block-slashing rhythm game is getting a big content drop next week including 20 new beat maps.

On May 25th, Beat Saber is getting 20 new beat maps—10 with 360 degree support and 10 with one-saber support.

Beat Saber supports SteamVR headsets, Rift, Quest, and PSVR. Since the PSVR version only supports forward-facing and 90-degree levels due to tracking constraints, it’s unlikely PSVR is getting the 360 maps.

Even prior to the studio’s acquisition by Facebook late last year, Beat Games was able to secure some pretty impressive licencing deals with bands such as Imagine Dragons and Panic! at the Disco for its ongoing paid DLC, and provide a number of free tracks as well along the way.

After the acquisition, Beat Saber nabbed tracks from Green Day and Timbaland; the strategy of filling out its library with new beat maps is a comparatively cheap option to its recent high-level deals, as all of the levels below use previously licensed music. Check out the full list below:

New 360 Beat Maps

  • Rattlesnake, Monstercat

‘Superhot VR’ Has Now Sold More Than 2 Million Copies

Superhot VR (2016) has now gone double platinum, putting the stylish red-guy-smashing action game at over two million copies sold across all VR platforms.

Released in 2016 on Rift as an Oculus Touch launch title, Superhot VR eventually made its way to nearly every VR platform, including SteamVR headsets, PSVR, and most recently Oculus Quest.

And it’s only gotten more popular over the years since launch, with its Quest release in 2019 seeing a 300 percent sales increase on the first day over its initial launch on Rift.

During holiday season 2019, the game grossed over $2 million in revenue in only one week across all platforms. And that was well after the VR game surpassed the original flatscreen game in overall revenue in April 2019.

“Across all sales platforms, we’ve managed to achieve something that not many developers manage to do in any medium, and that’s pretty meaningful to us so we thought we’d send a press release about it,” said Callum Underwood, Director of Special Projects at SUPERHOT Team. “VR has enabled us to do all the cool stuff we do here, and is paying for the livelihoods of over 45 people to put it bluntly.”

“2020 is shaping up to be our best year yet, sales of SUPERHOT VR are up at least 195% compared to this time last year, and we couldn’t be more proud,” said Alastair Hebson, Director of Other Special Projects at SUPERHOT Team.

The studio says various sales for Superhot VR game will start May 21st, and that users on all platforms should keep any eye out for savings.

Rock Star Simulator ‘Hotel R’n’R’ to Launch on PSVR May 28th, Trailer Here

Hotel R’n’R, the rock star lifestyle simulator, is headed out of early access on PC VR headsets soon, which will coincide its release on PSVR.

Developers Wolf & Wood Interactive say the full version is set to release on May 28th, which will be available on SteamVR headsets, Oculus Rift, and PSVR.

Hotel R’n’R landed on Steam and the Oculus Store for Rift back in late August, serving up plenty of opportunity to approach destruction with a creative flair. As a failed musician who struck a deal with the Devil, you smash up different physics-based hotels with over 30 weapons, letting you take out a bit of that pent up rage in the process.

In addition to single player mode, the game also supports up to five players in its ‘Pass and Play’ mode, which lets you compete against your friends in a number of mini-games.

Wolf & Wood are also known for creating VR titles The Exorcist: Legion VR (2017) and A Chair in a Room: Greenwater (2016).

This ‘Beat Saber’ Project Uses AI to Generate Custom Beat Maps for Any Song

Manually creating beat maps for your favorite songs in Beat Saber (2018) requires a bit of know-how and time. If you’re looking for a quick and surprisingly effective solution to automatically creating beat maps for any song, look no further than the fan-built service called ‘Beat Sage’.

Beat Sage is an AI which creates custom beat maps with any song on YouTube, or any mp3 in your possession. Simply navigate to the Beat Sage website, plug in the song’s YouTube URL (or upload your own mp3), tick a few boxes for level difficulty, game modes, and song events, and you’ll have a brand new mess of levels for Beat Saber on SteamVR headsets and Oculus Quest. And it’s free.

Created by Beat Saber fans Chris Donahue and Abhay Agarwal, Beat Sage is said to use two neural networks to map an audio file into what the team calls “a plausible Beat Saber level.”

Image captured by Road to VR

“These neural networks were trained on Beat Saber levels created by humans,” the team explains. “The first neural network listens to the audio and predicts at what points in time blocks should be placed. The second neural network looks at the predicted timings and maps each to a timestamp to a block type (e.g. red up, blue down, red up + blue down).”

Check out the promo below to see some of the results, timestamped showing Ariana Grande’s song ‘thank u, next’.

Installing the songs is fairly straightforward on PC, as it doesn’t require any modding. Find the ‘CustomLevels’ subfolder in your directory either via Steam or Oculus Home—depending on where you bought Beat Saber. Here’s the default locations.

  • Steam VR: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Beat Saber\Beat Saber_Data\CustomLevels
  • Oculus Home: C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus Apps\Software\hyperbolic-magnetism-beat-saber\Beat Saber_Data\CustomLevels

From there you unzip the downloaded folder into CustomLevels and you’re off to the races.

Installing for Oculus Quest is a bit more involved, as it requires modding through the unofficial sideloading app SideQuest. Check out the full instructions on how to install the custom songs on Quest.

Beat Sage is free, however the team is taking donations through its Patreon, which they say will help keep the service free moving forward.

Oculus Exclusive ‘Star Wars Vader Immortal’ Coming to PSVR This Summer

Admit it. You’ve been wanting to try out the Oculus exclusive series Star Wars Vader Immortal since it first came to Rift and Quest last year. Now ILMxLAB says it’s preparing to bring the award-winning narrative adventure series to PSVR.

Vader Immortal is coming to PSVR this summer, ILMxLAB Creative Executive Producer Mark S. Miller announced in a PS blog post. Unlike its trilogy-style, piecemeal roll-out on Rift and Quest, the PSVR version is coming out in a single package, Miller says.

Although it’s not a full-blown Star Wars VR game, leaning more towards the ‘cinematic experience’ spectrum, Vader Immortal offers some of the most immersive environments, character design, story, and atmosphere we’ve ever seen in VR. Yes, the story mode part of the game is entirely scripted, and doesn’t offer much in the way of a challenge to complete when it does throw action your way, but it’s still an absolute blast to wield a lightsaber and get face-to-face with the tall dark and not-so-handsome Sith lord himself.

And once you’re done with the story, you can hone your Jedi skills in one of three ‘lightsaber dojos’, which present some of the best, most challenging wave-based combat out there. You might think that’s not saying much, but it actually turned out to be a highlight of the adventure on our first go around on Quest.

In fact, we liked the first episode so much we gave it Road to VR’s 2019 Oculus Quest Game of the Year.
