Beat Games: First Song Pack for ‘Beat Saber’ Could Arrive on PSVR This Month

Beat Games co-founder and CEO Jaroslav Beck tweeted today that the PSVR version of hit rhythm game Beat Saber (2018) could be getting its first song pack sometime this month.

The PSVR version of Beat Saber, which launched early last month, features 16 songs, each of them with varying levels of difficulty.

Late last month the studio said that the music for first PSVR song pack was ready and being mapped—no small task, even for an indie studio that’s celebrated such wide success with the release of their game on both PSVR and PC VR (still in early access).

Now, Beck says that the first song pack should hopefully be done by the end of 2018. That’s only a little under three weeks away.

There’s still no word on the track list, or how many songs will be available for PSVR users. However you slice it (pun intended), the studio is nearing the finish line. Let’s just hope it’s here in time for Christmas.

The studio has also kept mum on when to expect an official track editor of PC VR users too, although PC players have had the benefit of non-official track editor and community-driven song expansion software ‘Beat Saver’ for some time now—a luxury that PSVR users haven’t had, making it clear where Beat Games’ priorities lie for now.

‘Spice & Wolf VR’ Kickstarter Doubles Funding Goal, Coming to Rift, Vive, Go, PSVR & Quest

SpicyTails, the studio behind VR anime experience Project LUX (2018), recently launched a Kickstarter for their latest VR project, Spice & Wolf VR. After having reached their initial funding goal of ¥8,000,000 (~$70,800) in the Kickstarter’s first 24 hours, the campaign has now hit the 200% fulfillment mark.

While the project tripled its funding goal on Japanese crowdfunding platform Campfire in relatively short order, it wasn’t certain if Spice & Wolf VR would see the same level of success outside of Japan at the onset. It seems the manga and anime’s Western fan base has spoken, and they definitely want Spice & Wolf in VR.

At the time of this writing, the Spice & Wolf VR Kickstarter has garnered ¥16,157,000 (~$143,686), an excellent result for a campaign that went live only 9 days ago; the campaign will come to an end on January 12th, 2019.

The lowest funding tier at ¥3,000 (~$27) gets you a download key for the platform of your choice: Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, HTC Vive, PSVR, or Oculus Quest. The game is estimated to arrive sometime in May 2019 for Rift, Go, and Vive.

Since the addition of PSVR and Quest support was the result of a Campfire stretch goal, SpicyTails says that those users will likely see their copies “months later.”

‘Falcon Age’ Gameplay Trailer Reveals Hunting, Crafting, Fighting & More

Falcon Age, the upcoming single-player adventure for PS4 and PSVR, now has a proper gameplay trailer showing off some the mechanics you can expect when the game releases next year.

In the trailer, Falcon Age boasts its ability to let the player raise their own falcon from a baby, hunt game such as mountain goats and other birds, craft items, build a farm & cook food, and fight robots using your falcon pal.

Here’s a summary of Falcon Age from the developers Outerloop Games:

The game starts on a dying colony planet with its culture destroyed, resourced depleted, and turned into a desert by machine invaders. Ara’s been wrongfully thrown in jail for a minor infraction. While she awaits her fate in a lonely cell, she passes the time by befriending a young falcon. Together they escape and set off on an adventure to help the resistance reclaim their freedom and drive off the invaders.

Outerloop says Falcon Age is “built from the ground up specially for PSVR using either Move Controllers or a DualShock 4.” The game also supports standard controls for PS4 and PS4 Pro users without a PSVR headset.

There’s no exact launch date yet; developers Outerloop Games have only stated that Falcon Age will launch sometime in 2019.

‘Astro Bot’ Wins The Game Awards’ Best VR/AR Game of 2018

Astro Bot Rescue Mission (2018), the VR platformer that’s still wowing PSVR users well after its October 2nd launch, took home the title of ‘Best VR/AR Game’ at last night’s Game Awards.

The category specified that the winner would be crowned this year’s “best game experience playable in virtual or augmented reality, irrespective of platform.” Other games competing in the category were Beat Saber, Firewall Zero Hour, Moss, and Tetris Effect.

Developed by Sony Interactive entertainment’s JAPAN Studio, Astro Bot is essentially a full length spin-off of a mini-game called ‘Robots Rescue’ that was part of The Playroom VR, a free collection of co-op mini-games bundled with PSVR.

The charming, well-realized platformer puts you in control of a robot named Astro, tasking you both with collecting his missing buddies with the help of an ever-growing array of unique tools that pop out of your DualShock 4 controller.

In our review, Road to VR Executive Editor Ben Lang called Astro Bot a “superb game; the promising result of tasking a group of clearly talented game designers and developers with building a game around a brand new medium like VR.”

Continuing:

The game expertly executes every idea it brings to the table. There’s charm throughout, derived from excellent animation, art direction, FX and SFX, right down to the interactive credits sequence. Astro Bot Rescue Mission claims our first 10 out of 10 because it’s full of smart VR game design, and plays to the platform’s strengths while avoiding its weaknesses. In addition to having the right amount of content to leave the player with a truly satisfying experience, it’s hard to imagine many ways in which the game could have been better made.

Check out our in-depth review of Astro Bot to see why we gave it our first [10/10] rating.

‘Typhon Hunter’ VR Multiplayer to Launch in Early 2019, VR Escape Room Next Week

Prey: Typhon Hunter, the final update to Prey: Digital Deluxe and Prey: Mooncrash, is set to release December 11th on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, although VR users will have to wait a bit longer to jump into the 5v1 multiplayer prop hunting action.

Like PropHunt in Gary’s Mod, one player is assigned as the hunter (Morgan Yu) while the others try to hide out and evade detection as typhons, the game’s alien race of mimics that can turn into everyday objects like mugs, chairs—practically anything you can think of.

Bethesda says in a blog post that VR support for Typhon Hunter is slated to arrive sometime in “early 2019.”

A VR-only single-player escape room dubbed TranStar VR is launching on December 11th however. TranStar VR is set just days before the disastrous events of Prey, tasking you with solving puzzles in various locations across Talos I. “Each map will have its own unique story and objective,” the studio says.

TranStar VR also comes along with an expanded TranStar Museum, inspired by the museum in the Talos I lobby. You’ll be able to get up-close-and-personal with everything from spacesuits and Neuromods, to weapons and several Typhon aliens. An interactive tour will also let you dive a little deeper into history of TranStar and Talos I.

The studio has been shy on detailing exactly which VR headsets will see support, although they’ve said it’s coming to PSVR and PC VR, the latter likely entailing support for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Typhon Hunter and TranStar VR are free to users who own the Mooncrash DLC or Prey: Digital Deluxe edition.

New players will be able to purchase Prey: Digital Deluxe for $40 to receive for the whole kit and caboodle; existing Prey owners can upgrade their game to Prey: Mooncrash for $20.

Retrofuture Cold War Adventure ‘Red Matter’ Heading to PSVR This Month

Red Matter (2018), the retrofuturistic first-person adventure game previously launched on PC VR headsets, is headed to PSVR this month in North America and Europe.

Vertical Robot released word of the PSVR launch in a tweet, saying the single-player adventure game is headed to the PlayStation store starting December 6th in Europe, and December 11 in North America.

The version optimized for PlayStation Pro features what Vertical Robot say is a “20% pixel density increase as well as much improved anti aliasing.”

Red Matter launched first on the Oculus Store for Rift in May, and later on Steam for Vive, Rift, and Windows VR headsets in November.

If you don’t have time to read our review and see why we gave it a solid [8.3/10] for PC VR, here’s a quick summary of what awaits you:

Red Matter tosses you into a strange and mysterious alternate universe which takes old Cold War rivalries and teases them out to an interesting logical conclusion: space bases, astronaut espionage and a healthy dose of intrigue as you, a member of the Atlantic Union, infiltrate the off-planet test facility of the very Soviet-sounding Volgravians.

Like most adventure games, Red Matter’s emphasis is on telling its story through found items such as notes, diaries, photos, and a host of everyday objects.

It just so happens that when you crash-land on the Volgravian base on Rhea, a moon of Saturn, that two-way communication is disrupted—but you still have your handy Volgravian-to-English translating module, making it a constant exercise in deciphering the faux-Russian script.

Relaxing Maze Game ‘Arca’s Path’ Launches on All Major VR Headsets, Trailer Here

Arca’s Path VR, a single-player VR maze game produced by Rebellion and developed by Dream Reality Interactive, is launching today on all major VR platforms including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows VR, PSVR, Oculus Go, Gear VR, and HTC Vive Focus.

As a controller-free game, you guide a curious sphere along its dangerous path using gaze controls. The physics-based world of Arca offers 25 levels, all dripping with a futuristic, geometric vibe with a chill soundtrack created by experimental electro music artist Raffertie.

Here’s Dream Reality Interactive’s summary of the title:

Tricked by a wicked android witch, you must seek a path home and escape the simulated world of Arca. Fully integrated across all major VR platforms, with intuitive hands-free gameplay. Arca’s Path VR is an atmospheric VR gaming experience

We got a chance to go hands-on with an early version of Arca’s Path at E3 this summer, and it really aims to dial you into the deceptively simple task of leading the ball from point A to point B. With its ambient soundtrack to underscore its slow, but deliberate gameplay, it decidedly presents a critical change of pace in VR for those moments when you just want to sit down and zone out.

PlayStation Awards Honors 3 Top Titles for Helping Sell PSVR in Asia

The PlayStation Awards took place in Tokyo last night, Sony’s annual award show that rewards PlayStation format titles based on sales in Asia. The PSVR awards category is a bit different though, instead honoring the top three titles that they say have “contributed to the sales of PlayStation VR” in the region.

While two of the three titles below were featured in heavily promoted hardware bundles in North America and Europe, interestingly enough none of the games awarded last night were bundled in Asia as far as we can tell.

Only titles released from Oct 1st, 2017 – Sept 30th, 2018 were considered this year. Last years winners were Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Farpoint, and SUMMER LESSON: Allison Snow.

If not based on hard sales numbers, as indicated in the other PS4 categories, we’re simply not certain what the criteria was for titles hoping to take home the award. Whatever the case may be, here’s the top three titles Sony says played a crucial role in selling PlayStation VR headsets this past year in Asia:

No Heroes Allowed! VR

Become the God of Destruction in a unique real time strategy game utilizing PS VR. Breed monsters to invade human territories, seen in a diorama-like view through the eyes of the God of Destruction. Together with Badman and Badmella, work towards total world domination!

Gran Turismo Sport

Put yourself in the driver’s seat with Gran Turismo Sport on PlayStation®VR and challenge yourself in the ultimate racing experience.

Developer: Polyphony Digital Inc., Sony Interactive Entertainment

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR

Skyrim VR puts you in the role of the Dragonborn – the prophesied hero who can harness the power of dragons. From battling ancient dragons to exploring rugged mountains and more, Skyrim VR brings to life a complete open world for you to explore any way you choose. Skyrim VR takes the full game (plus all of the official add-ons: Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn) and reimagines the complete epic fantasy with an unparalleled sense of scale, depth and immersion.

Rush boasts over 80 tracks across four environments, dozens of wingsuits to unlock and collect, and plenty of stuff to play with while you wait for a match to start such as nerf guns, basketballs, beach balls, and paddles.

Flying dangerously close to obstacles like walls, floor, or anything else you can find will help you fill up your boost meter—it’s a risky move that could send you to the front of the pack, or tumbling down the mountainside.

Rush launches today, December 4th in North America and Europe for $25 / £20 / €25. PlayStation Plus members will receive a 20% launch discount for the first two weeks of release.

‘Prison Boss VR’ Headed to PSVR Next Week, Launch Trailer Here

Prison Boss VR (2017) is a prison-themed crafting and trading game that launched on Steam for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift last August. But starting next week, PSVR owners will be able get in on the fun of clandestinely crafting tools, furniture and all sorts of things to trade your fellow inmates.

Coming December 4th to PSVR, Prison Boss VR essentially turns your room into your very own bared jail cell, replete with toilet, sink, and cupboard for hiding your rolling tobacco, papers, alcohol, self-penned erotica, and resultant stacks of money you collect along the way.

The dopey egg-shaped guards are always bounding around on patrol, so you’ll have to watch your back so they don’t bust you and take all of your hard-earned kit and cash. If you’re quick and keep your head on a swivel, you’ll be able to build your reputation, unlock new crafting items and furniture, and eventually become the prison boss.

Prison Boss VR was developed by Montréal-based indie studio Trebuchet, and currently holds a very respectable 89% rating on Steam, giving it a ‘Very Positive’ user review rating.
