Launching Tomorrow, Sony Reveals How Farpoint’s PS VR Aim Controller Came to Life

Farpoint, one of the most anticipated titles for PlayStation VR, hits stores tomorrow along with the new VR device it was designed alongside, the PSVR Aim Controller. Sony has published details of the design decisions that drove development of one of the oddest looking gaming peripherals ever built.

In the realm of VR gaming, triple-A games for any of of the available platforms are not exactly plentiful. The niche sizing of the fledgling market presents a huge risk for companies looking to back titles which require the high level of funding to meet today’s gamer’s expectations of what a flagship title should look like, especially one that requires the consumer to shell out for a VR headset to play. It’s remarkable then that a title which requires the purchase of yet another peripheral in order to play it ‘as designed’ would exist at all. And yet, that’s precisely what we have in Farpoint and the new PSVR Aim Controller, both of which launch tomorrow, May 16th.

Impulse Gear, developers of new PSVR exclusive first person shooter Farpoint, state that they wanted a way to “physically connect the player to the game”, and when – by happy chance – the team’s development cycle coincided with the gestation of a new gun-like motion controller being built by Sony, they jumped at the chance to use it. “… once you have the controller in your hands you know instinctively where the buttons and triggers are,” says Impulse Gear Co-founder Seth Luisi, writing in a new Sony blog post, “The 1:1 tracking also makes for a more skill-based game because the precision removes any need for aim assist.”

Indeed, when the PS VR Aim Controller was first shown off, impression were extremely favourable, including our own hands-on from Ben Lang last year. But there’s no getting around the fact that the Aim Controller looks just plain odd. Of course, as with most modern consumer electronics, a device’s form factor is not one which is executed lightly. So why does the PS VR Aim Controller look the way it does?

“I tried to make the design of the Aim Controller as simple as possible,” says Taichi Nokuo, Product Designer behind the device, “It was important that the player can use it safely and comfortably with the PS VR headset on, and that the controller can be used as any type or form of weapon inside the game.” Visually of course, the Aim Controller doesn’t look much like a gun at all, something the device has faced some light criticism for, but of course there’s reasoning behind this. “I made the intentional decision for the controller to not resemble an actual weapon, so that anybody, from children to adults, feel comfortable playing with it,” says Nokua.

The Aim Controller includes the full set of buttons, triggers, analogue sticks and d-pad found on a standard PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 controller, but placement of them all needed careful consideration. “The buttons are not scattered around the controller,” says Nokua, “but are simply and strategically placed where players naturally place their hands. The design is minimalistic but also original, which makes it unique.”

The Aim Controller utilises PSVR’s motion tracking system, featuring the now familiarly bulbous, glowing (phnurp!) PS Move-style sphere at the front. This enables reasonably precise 6 DoF (degrees of freedom) positional tracking and gives the illusion of 1:1 control to the player.

Just how well judged this design effort has been will soon become apparent too as both the PSVR Aim Controller and its flagship launch title Farpoint are available from tomorrow either as a bundle or game and controller sold separately.

We’ll of course have coverage of both Farpoint and the PSVR Aim Controller soon, so stay tuned to the site.

Become a Red Planet Wanderer with Farpoint Pre-Order Bonus

PlayStation VR exclusive Farpoint was recently confirmed for release late this spring, both as a solo edition and with the PlayStation VR Aim controller. Following this announcement and the reveal of a co-operative gameplay mode, a pre-order incentive has now been made available.

Farpoint Pre-Order BonusFarpoint throws the player to the edge of the universe as they set off on a perilous journey into a hostile alien environment. Having found yourself stranded on an uncharted extra-terrestrial world with only standard issue equipment to keep you alive, you’ll need to set off in search of a crashed space station, The Pilgrim, and its survivors to find a way back home.

In order to survive the player must master an arsenal of primary and secondary weapons, exploring your surroundings to uncover secrets of the strange anomaly which marooned you. The pre-order incentive now available for Farpoint lends itself to this later element of the gameplay, entitled the ‘Red Planet Wanderer’ space suit.

A cosmetic addition that will make you stand-out in Farpoint’s co-operative gameplay mode, the Red Planet Wanderer space suit is available with pre-orders of either the solo retail package or the Farpoint and PlayStation VR Aim controller bundle at Amazon.co.uk.

Impulse Gear Release New Story Trailer for Farpoint as Title Goes Gold

There’s less than four weeks to go until Impulse Gear release first-person shooter (FPS) Farpoint on PlayStation VR. Set to become one of the biggest releases for the head-mounted display (HMD) this year, the studio has announced the title has gone gold and revealed a brand new story trailer.

Farpoint is a single-player narrative experience that also features an online co-op mode. As the video showcases, you play as a member of an expeditionary team going to investigate a spatial anomaly. As is usually the case in space, events take a turn for the worst and you find yourself stranded on an distant hostile world with your only chance of survival and escape being to uncover its secrets and reunite with your team.

While Farpoint will be sold as a standalone video game, it’s been heavily promoted alongside the PlayStation VR Aim Controller. As VRFocus reported back in March, the physical or digital copy of Farpoint will retail for $49.99 USD/$59.99 CAN/€59.99 EUR/£49.99 GBP. While the bundle will cost $79.99/$99.99/€89.99/£74.99.

Impulse Gear has been working directly with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) on the development of the Aim controller, ensuring it accurately simulates the look and feel of a weapon in your hands, including a virtual scope and built in haptic feedback.

Farpoint will feature four online co-op levels at launch, each level is designed to challenge the combined firepower of two players with teams competing for the highest score.

Bundle Price Revealed for Farpoint with Aim Controller on PSVR

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) went all out to demo its PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD). Among the many booths was an area dedicated to newly announced title Farpoint, and an accompanying peripheral, the Aim controller. Several months later, US retailer Gamestop listed pricing and launch details on its website, and now its been confirmed they weren’t far of the mark.

Farpoint will launch in the US and Canada on 16th May, with a European release a day later. Impulse Gear’s videogame will be available as a standalone title or gamers can purchase it in a bundle with the Aim controller. On its own – either as a physical or digital copy – Farpoint will retail for $49.99 USD/$59.99 CAN/€59.99 EUR/£49.99 GBP. While the bundle will cost $79.99/$99.99/€89.99/£74.99.

For those PlayStation VR owners keen to dive into the action on day one, both the bundle and standalone game can be pre-ordered. As a bonus for those early adopters, a Red Planet Wanderer Spacesuit – an exclusive skin to wear in-game – will be available.

Another new piece of information has also surfaced. Up until this point Farpoint was only touted as a single-player experience, in fact it’ll feature online co-op as well. In a posting on PlayStation.Blog, Seth Luisi, Co-founder at Impulse Gear wrote: “In addition to the full single-player campaign, sharing the virtual world of Farpoint in co-op has been a key objective of the project from the beginning.

“Farpoint features four new online co-op levels at launch — each level designed to challenge the combined firepower of two players with teams competing for the highest score.”

Built specifically for virtual reality (VR) and PlayStation VR, Farpoint is a first-person shooter (FPS) set on a hostile alien world. Players will find themselves stranded on this uncharted planet, with their only way off being to locate a crashed space station – The Pilgrim – and its survivors to find a way back home.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Farpoint, reporting back with any further updates.

PlayStation is Developing Entirely New First Party Titles for PSVR Aim Controller

At a PlayStation VR session today at GDC, Sony stated that first-party PSVR titles with support for the new Aim peripheral are in development.

Sony’s curious looking Aim controller may not be the coolest looking peripheral out there (a dubious accolade at any rate), but after our hands-on with the device and its first supported title Farpoint was quite positive. The question however, as with any peripheral ever made, is: What will the software support be like? The answer to which defines whether the device will thrive or, as with so many before it, will die a slow lonely death.

Well it seems that, in addition to Farpointwhich we now know will release alongside the Aim controller on May 16th – Sony have now indicated the we can expect first party developed titles built for and using the new device.

At a PlayStation VR focused session at GDC yesterday, Technical Product Manager at PlayStation, Tom Bruckbock, was asked about Sony’s plans on software support for the new peripheral. In response, Bruckbock stated that the company was indeed working on entirely new titles built with the device as a foundation.

When asked if that meant retro-active support for existing PSVR games like PlayStation VR Worlds, the company confirmed that it had entirely new titles in the works, although precisely what those titles were and when they might arrive is still a mystery. However, Bruckbock also confirmed that zombie shooter The Brookhaven Experiment will receive Aim controller support.

PSVR Aim Controller Launches with ‘Farpoint’ on May 16th, Co-op Confirmed

At GDC 2017, developers Impulse Gear confirmed that their VR shooter Farpoint has Co-op, and will launch in a bundle with the PS VR Aim Controller on May 16th. An ‘unnerving space adventure set on a hostile alien world’, Farpoint is a free-movement FPS exclusive to PlayStation VR.

Build from the group up for PlayStation VR by independent studio Impulse Gear, Farpoint is a free-movement FPS designed to be played with the PS VR Aim Controller. While the game can be played on a standard PS4 gamepad, the new peripheral was developed by Sony with input from Impulse Gear, and will be launching as a bundle on May 16th.

During a developer session at this week’s GDC about the Aim controller, which is expected to receive support for several future PS VR titles, Impulse Gear confirmed Farpoint will have a co-op mode.

The PSVR Aim Controller has a friendlier appearance than the gun-like Sharp Shooter PS3 accessory, and benefits from having PlayStation Move-style features such as a tracking sphere, trigger and thumbstick integrated into the unit, meaning no separate Move controllers are required. The integrated motion sensors mean that the new controller is more accurate than the Sharp Shooter, able to deliver 1:1 tracking of the in-game weapon.

Farpoint is most notable for its free movement (often referred to as ‘full locomotion’) – something that is typically avoided in VR FPS in favour of a teleport mechanic due to its tendency to cause nausea. The 1:1 weapon tracking, combined with careful attention to movement speed and animation, assisted by IKinema’s real-time inverse kinematics, means that it is able to deliver a comfortable experience, as described in our hands-on.
