Ordnance Survey is Getting Into AR With a Geo-location Game of its own

Ordinance Survey

Ordnance Survey already utilises augmented reality (AR) in its OS Maps app but the organisation plans to embrace the technology even further with its very first AR videogame. Partnering with PRELOADED (BBC Earth – Micro Kingdoms: Senses), their working on a new geo-location title set to launch in 2022.

Considering Ordnance Survey is Great Britain’s national mapping service it seems like an obvious idea to use its extensive mapping and geospatial data to make an AR videogame that encourages people outdoors. Few details have been revealed so far but the videogame will “deliver contextual experiences which drive exploration” And will be complementary to OS Maps which has more than 3.5 million users.

While you might not be collecting wandering creatures as you do in Pokemon GO – the AR title which really started it all – Ordnance Survey’s detailed maps could provide a far more factual experience. All whilst uncovering new walking routes.

“We want to make maps fun and geo-location games and gamified apps enable their players to collectively visualise the great outdoors as they wish to experience and interact with their surroundings. It’s no longer all about what is physically present in a set location,” Nick Giles, Managing Director of OS Leisure in a statement. “By creating a Geo-location game of our own, this new mixture of realities gives us more opportunities to encourage people to explore and get outside more often.”

“We’re at a point where advancements in AR and geospatial technologies allow us to connect with our real-world in completely new and meaningful ways. We’re so excited to work with Ordnance Survey to bring the true potential of location-based play to family audiences in the UK and beyond,” Phil Stuart, Creative Director at PRELOADED adds.

Ordnance Survey’s AR videogame will join an ever-growing lineup of geo-location titles such as The Witcher: Monster Slayer, set to arrive next week for iOS and Android devices. If you need a good reason to go for a walk hunting monsters from The Witcher franchise is a good excuse.

As further details regarding the new AR project are released ahead of the early 2022 launch, VRFocus will keep you updated.

Create Games With Your Voice Inside the Anything World Beta

Anything.World

Creating videogames for virtual reality (VR) or non-VR purposes has never been a simple process but as the industry has grown so have the tools to smooth development. And this is where Anything World steps in, a new platform designed to help creators build 3D worlds using features such as voice commands, with an open beta now available.

Anything.World

Working in conjunction with Unity – Unreal Engine support is planned for the future – Anything World has several key features which should interest those building videogames, apps or other digital content. Integrating with 3D libraries such as Google Poly or Sketchfab, the cloud platform can pull these stationary assets in and then animate them automatically all by using your voice.

Using a combination of AI, natural language understanding and computer vision, Anything World’s custom machine learning can recognise a model, whether its a cat or a car and then animate it accordingly, you can even ask it to perform certain actions like carrying something or jumping. And because Anything.World already has access to over 500,000 3D models (and growing) there’s plenty of accessible content, reducing iteration times in the process.

This doesn’t simply apply to singular models as you can verbally request a whole zoo full of animals or squadron of planes. Anything World can also build environments for these to populate, all without the need to code.

Anything.World

Based in London, UK, Anything World was founded in 2018, holding a £500k GBP pre-seed round earlier this year which Warner Music’s Boost Fund was a part of. Since then the platform has garnered some major interest from companies such as Ubisoft, Facebook, Preloaded, Nexus Studios and more. The team is currently working with Ubisoft on an augmented reality (AR) app called Rabbids Playground powered by Anything World.

“I’m excited about the power that their technology allows within the immersive space – it creates exciting new opportunities for our artists to express their creativity and engage with their fans through 3D worlds and objects,” said Oana Ruxandra, EVP Business Development and Chief Digital Officer, Warner Music Group in a statement.

The Anything World beta is available to sign up to now, plus you can also request a demo. For further updates on the platform and how its aiding content creators, keep reading VRFocus.

BBC Earth and Magic Leap Bring the Insect World to Life in Micro Kingdoms: Senses

Last year BBC Studios, Preloaded and Magic Leap revealed a collaborative project innovating upon 60 years of storytelling by the BBC Natural History Unit, BBC Earth – Micro Kingdoms: Senses. If you happen to own a Magic Leap 1 headset the documentary is available today from the Magic Leap store.

BBC Earth - Micro Kingdoms

Mixing spatial computing experience and natural history documentary, BBC Earth – Micro Kingdoms: Senses is narrated by Stephen Fry, encouraging users to learn about ants and spiders.

Utilising Magic Leap’s mixed reality technology users can examine a Leaf Cutter Ant colony in the tropical rainforests of Central America. And for the really brave who don’t have a fear of eight-legged creatures, they can encounter a Wandering Spider in the Atlantic Forest of Eastern Brazil, with the experience detailing their extraordinary senses which help them survive and thrive.

“Our mission is to inform, educate and entertain. With Micro Kingdoms – Senses and the immersive technology of Magic Leap we’re exploring new ways of engaging audiences with natural history storytelling,” said Tom Burton, Head of Interactive at BBC Studios in a statement.

BBC Earth - Micro Kingdoms“In working with BBC Studios and PRELOADED we have blended the physical and digital world to bring valuable earth ecosystems into any room, giving people the chance to see, hear and feel how these animals live and survive. When we can learn by actually experiencing environments, the potential for empathy and appreciation of new worlds grows exponentially. This is the power of spatial computing,” adds Rio Caraeff, Chief Content Officer at Magic Leap.

BBC Earth – Micro Kingdoms: Senses was created as part of the Magic Leap Independent Creator Program and follows on from 2018’s BBC Earth: Life in VR for the Lenovo Mirage Solo standalone headset, another collaborative effort between BBC Studios and Preloaded.

Magic Leap 1 isn’t exactly a consumer-focused device as the basic version will still set you back a cool $2,295 USD and can only be purchased from the company’s website. At the moment that means mostly developers and enterprise are the main customers although as this app demonstrates not all the content is business-focused.

Take a look at the app in action below and for further announcements from BBC Studios, Preloaded and Magic Leap, keep reading VRFocus.

BBC Studios & Preloaded to Launch Micro-Habitat Experience on Magic Leap One This Fall

BBC Studios has partnered with PRELOADED, the London-based AR/VR studio, to bring a new experience to Magic Leap One that aims to explore the tiny kingdoms of Mother Nature.

Called BBC Earth – Micro Kingdoms: Senses, the upcoming AR experience is said to offer users a chance to interactively explore micro habitats from the natural world and bring you face-to-face with its’ inhabitants, something its creators say will confront the user with “the invisible senses that guide their behaviour and help them survive.”

If the experience’s web page is anything to go on, the experience looks to focus on the creepy crawlies of the world, such as ants and spiders.

BBC Earth – Micro Kingdoms: Senses is slated to launch on Magic Leap One at some point this fall.

“The ambition of the Natural History Unit is always to connect new audiences in new ways to the wonders of the natural world – and in working with PRELOADED on this exciting new project we are achieving that in groundbreaking new ways,” said Doug Hope, executive producer at BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit.

The experience was developed by PRELOADED in collaboration with BBC Studios and their Natural History Unit, and funded by the Magic Leap Independent Creator Program. Preloaded is also known for creating the award-winning VR experience BBC Earth: Life in VR (2018), as well as iOS AR experience A Brief History of Amazing Stunts.
