Gran Turismo Sport Nürburgring Trailer Released

The Nürburgring is one of the most famous – and famously demanding – racing circuits in the world. Used by car manufacturers to thoroughly test their machines, now the cars from the Gran Turismo Sport roster can be seen taking on the circuit in the new trailer.

The new trailer shows the course at night, allowing developer Polyphony Digital to show off its impressive lighting effects, both inside and outside the car. The inside view shows the car interior in darkness, with only instrument panels providing light until another car comes close, allowing the headlights to illuminate the cabin.

Players will be able to experience the punishing course for themselves in virtual reality (VR) with the 1 vs 1 mode, which while not a full-rostered race, will still give a sense of the experience of how difficult and demanding the Nürburgring truly is.

Professional racing drivers have already offered praise for the upcoming title in a previous trailer, where Nissan Pro Drivers Ricardo Sanchez and Jann Mardenborough commented on the realism offered by Gran Turismo Sport, particularly in VR mode.

Gran Turismo Sport is due for release in October for the PlayStation VR. A special Gran Turismo Sport branded PlayStation 4 slim will be released that same month. A price point for the title is yet to be confirmed.

Sony Reveals New Trailer For Gran Turismo Sport

Sony have unveiled a new trailer for upcoming title, Gran Turismo Sport which features several professional racing drivers and emphasises the impact of the PlayStation VR virtual reality (VR) on the gameplay.

The Gran Turismo series has long been known for its emphasis on accuracy, with the developers at Polyphony Digital going to extreme lengths to create cars and tracks that are as close to the real life equivalents as possible, using exacting measurements ad physics models that are as close to reality as modern technology can make them.

Due to the accuracy and the perfectionism of its developer, the Gran Turismo series has been used by professional and amateur racing drivers to get a feel for tracks and polish their skills in the off-season. So it’s not too much of a surprise that the new trailer features several professional racing drivers such as Ricardo Sanchez and Jann Mardenborough, both Nissan Pro Drivers, speaking of the impact the VR features has.

Some have been somewhat disappointed to learn that VR will only be available in 1vs1 mode in Gran Turismo Sport, but the developers have promised a rich experience for those using the PlayStation VR.

Polyphony Digital CEO Speaks About Gran Turismo Sport’s VR Mode

When it was announced that the virtual reality (VR) functionality in upcoming title Gran Turismo Sport would be limited to 1 vs 1 races in PlayStation VR mode, many people were disappointed. Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi talks about the reasons for this, and what the developer hopes to accomplish in the future.

Polyphony Digital is legendary among the videogaming community for its perfectionism, and the studio has shown no qualms with delaying titles until they had everything spot-on. Did this tendency limit what the studio felt they could do with VR? Speaking with Finder.Com.AU, Yamauchi says: “With VR, we’ve done everything with the current console to make Gran Turismo VR the best it can be. There was a lot of very hard development, and as a result of all the efforts that were made, the VR mode in Gran Turismo Sport is at the very top of the industry. I don’t think you will find any VR racing experience out there [as good].”

Nonetheless, Yamauchi indicates some disappointment with the current state of VR technology: “Still, it’s not like we’ve reached our goal. Obviously, the hardware and devices need to evolve more, and I think VR is something we will need to look at in the long-term to see what it ultimately achieves. But in terms of the current VR, I think the best experience you will get is with the PS4 Pro and the PSVR system.”

Yamauchi is far from alone among developers who are waiting for the next generation of VR hardware to push the boundaries further. Tameem Antoniades of Ninja Theory believes that the much anticipated 3rd generation of VR hardware will be what truly cements VR into the mainstream, while celebrity developer Cliff ‘Cliffy B’ Bleszinski believes that VR is still searching for its ‘Killer App’.
