‘Gran Turismo’ Studio: Next Game to Embrace ‘past, present & future’, Suggests VR Support

Kazunori Yamauchi, CEO of Polyphony Digital and developer behind the Gran Turismo franchise, recently sat down with GT Planet to reveal a bit about the studio’s next Gran Turismo title. Yamauchi says that not only is the next GT game already in works, but it will embrace the “past, present and future.” Furthermore, Yamauchi says he believes in the future of VR, and confirms it’s “very suited for a driving game.”

Although Yamauchi was reticent to speak specifically about whether the next GT game will definitely feature VR supporthe feels confident in virtual reality as the next generation consoles emerge.

“The first thing that’s going to be affected by more power is VR,” Yamauchi told GT Planet. “I don’t think that there’s anything else that requires that much processing power. I really like VR; I’m one to believe in the possibilities of it, and it’s very suited for a driving game.”

Sony most recently revealed the first details of its upcoming PlayStation console in an exclusive interview with Wired, saying that the current generation PSVR will be compatible with their next gen PS console, and that it would feature a more powerful CPU and GPU, advanced audio processing, and radically faster mass storage—all of it music to any VR developer’s ears.

“VR is something that really depends on the evolution of GPU power, and the hardware for it, like display devices even,” Yamauchi continues. “It’s something where you can never have enough computing power; there’s always going to be that hardware limit, and that limit is never going to be high enough for us! Obviously that’s going to gradually improve over time and we’ll make sure to follow that.”

Responding to a question regarding whether the studio’s next title will be in the Gran Turismo franchise, or its offshoot Gran Turismo Sport (2017), Yamauchi thinks the next title “will be a combination of the past, present and future – a complete form of Gran Turismo,” he concluded.

When Polyphony Digital announced that Gran Turismo Sport would include full PSVR support back in late 2015, many driving sim fans were excited they’d finally get to jump into their favorite super cars and hit the track in VR. However the studio didn’t end up offering full support, rather serving up a single ‘VR Arcade’ mode—something that proved to be pretty lackluster due to its 1v1 races with AI that just doesn’t seem to offer much of a challenge.

The lack of full support was very likely due to hardware concerns however, so a console with greater processing power may allow the studio to offer its next game fully in VR.

GT Sport Discounted to £10.85/$13.99

Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo is one of the most popular racing videogame franchises of all time, and the PlayStation 4 edition of the series, GT Sport, proved to be no different. Now however, 19 months after its debut, the videogame is available to purchase for some fantastically reduced prices, including one retailer offering more than a 75 percent discount on the suggested retail price (SRP).

Often considered the definitive motor racing experience, Gran Turismo is back on PlayStation 4, offering players instant access to the fastest, most desirable driving machines on the planet. More than 174 of the best cars in the world are available in GT Sport, from Vision Gran Turismo concept vehicles and exclusive prototypes to the best in real world motoring. All cars have been built from the ground up to deliver the most realistic handling cars ever available in a Gran Turismo videogame, and every vehicle has been digitally recreated in exhaustive detail, from the internal structure of the headlights to the stitching of the seats.

Building on the popularity of the numerous racetracks featured in previous Gran Turismo titles, including the Nürburgring Nordschleife (North Loop), a number of tracks featured in GT Sport appear in the series for the first time. These include the “Tokyo Expressway” and the half-mile oval dubbed the “Northern Isle Speedway.” A total of 17 locations with over 40 courses feature in GT Sport, taking drivers everywhere from the Japanese metropolis to the Mexican-American border.

Of course, the most important aspect of GT Sport for readers of VRFocus is the PlayStation VR compatibility, originally revealed way back in 2015. The VR Tour Mode pits players head-to-head in online races, and the post-launch addition of VR Time Trials offers an enjoyable – if less than comprehensive – VR bonus to the core GT Sport videogame.

GT Sport is currently available in physical retail packaging for £10.85 GBP / $13.99 USD via Play Asia, while Amazon is also offering the title at a discounted price of £19.37. For comparison sake, UK retailer GAME is currently listing the title at £44.99.

The PlayStation VR software catalogue is rapidly increasing with both indie releases and AAA blockbusters such as GT Sport, with some new titles expected to be announced at next month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Los Angeles. The Gran Turismo Sport PlayStation VR Bundle Launches Today

Yesterday Polyphony Digital launched Gran Turismo Sport in North America and today it’s Europe’s turn. To celebrate the release Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced a new PlayStation VR bundle featuring the videogame.

Included in the bundle is a physical copy of the Gran Turismo Sport standard edition, PlayStation VR and PlayStation Camera. Also in the bundle is a copy of PlayStation VR Worlds, either as a physical copy or digital version depending on the retailer.

Gran Turismo Sport is only partially compatible with PlayStation VR, meaning you can’t play the entire videogame in VR. Instead there’s a specially designed 1 vs.1 mode where players can experience every single race track against an AI opponent.

At present, UK retailers that are stocking the bundle include Smyths Toys and Very, both of whom are selling it for £349.99 GBP.

Step into Gran Turismo Sport with GT Academy Winner Matt Simmons

There’s less than a week to go until Polophony Digital release the next title in the Gran Turismo franchise, Gran Turismo Sport, coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation VR on 17th October in North America and 18th for Europe. Racing fans are naturally looking forward to the release and just to keep that excitement going Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has released a new trailer.

To give the video a different flavour to every other Gran Turismo Sport trailer, 2015 Australian GT Academy Winner Matt Simmons has been brought in to narrate and star. Having won the GT Academy Simmons embarked on his Driver Development Programme (DDP) with NISMO and as a result obtained his International C Race Licence. During 2016 he raced in the Blancpain Endurance Series with Nissan GT Academy Team RJN in the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3.

The trailer’s all about spouting the virtues of 4K resolution and HDR visuals to make Gran Turismo Sport the best looking racer yet. Obviously for that truly immersive racing experience you need virtual reality (VR) and PlayStation VR, putting you directly in the driving seat. As previously reported Gran Turismo Sport will have partial VR compatibility offering a 1 vs 1 mode rather than the entire videogame.
