Sony Tease new Gameplay Footage of Polyarc’s Moss

One of the standout virtual reality (VR) titles from last years Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) was Moss by Polyarc. The PlayStation VR exclusive has captured hearts thanks to its cute heroine, a small mouse name Quill. With the launch due in just over two weeks, Sony Interactive Entertainment America (SIEA) has decided to whet those appetites with new gameplay footage as well as some other ancillary items.

Moss SCREENSHOT 21

Apart from a few screenshots, Polyarc has released no new video footage of Moss since that E3 2017 reveal. This is the first time you’ll get to see some of the levels in Moss – so don’t watch if you want it all to be a surprise. Obviously, with new areas comes enemies and puzzles – remember this is a gameplay video rather than trailer, with the SIEA social media team playing – so plenty of spoilers. On the plus side, the video gives you an even better idea of what to expect, especially if you’ve pre-ordered or are still planning to.

Apart from the video Polyarc announced an official Moss iMessage sticker pack. Now fans can send 21 animated Quill stickers to anyone using the Messages app. They can even add Quill to their photos if they so wish. And for fans wanting to further customise their desktop or phone, there’s a bunch of new Moss in-game and concept art backgrounds and wallpapers to download from the Polyarc store.

If you’ve not read it yet, VRFocus wrote a glowing preview of Moss back in June, saying: “After just one short play, the tease of more taxing puzzles and the forming of a non-verbal relationship with the adorable Quill is very compelling.”  VRFocus also sat down with Polyarc’s Chris Alderson who works as the Art Director on Moss for further info.

Moss will be available for PlayStation VR on 27th February 2018, retailing for £29.99 USD. Want a new videogame this week for your Sony head-mounted display (HMD), well there are 5 launching tomorrow. For any further PlayStation VR updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Polyarc’s Moss for PlayStation VR is Getting Cuter, if That’s Possible

VRFocus discussed how incredibly beautiful Moss is at The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2017 . This puzzle, adventure game for the PlayStation VR allows the player to interact both with the environment as well as one of the cutest virtual reality (VR) heroes: Quill.

Chris Alderson, the Art Director at Polyarc explains that during the early development stages of Moss their team started prototyping with physical interaction. They realised that they enjoyed moving around, picking up things in the environment and VR was a perfect sandbox for interactivity. Polyarc is composed of character developers and have put in a lot of effort into Quill as a character. He believes that VR really needs a few mascots and Quill can be one of them.

Polyarc is currently fully developing the story and are trying to find a way to make the pages on the book at the beginning of the game more interactive, similar to the Harry Potter posters where moments come to life. Alderson explains that a page would come to life, pause and then you can start playing. Polyarc are also toying with the idea of a narrator, in order to fully flesh out the world and give more insight into Quill’s story.

Alderson reveals that new environments are being added, such as Quill’s home town. This will give the player insight into Quill’s village, her mates and you’ll be able to peek into the windows and see them. Alderson believes that curiosity is encourage and really shines through in Moss.

The game will be released this winter. Polyarc consist of 15 people and do plan to bring it to more platforms that include full head and hand tracking.

The VR Job Hub: After E3 Special

We’ve said farewell to the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), although likely not Los Angeles for another year and the team is presently winging their way home to the UK. It was certainly a busy couple of weeks, including the run up to E3 itself.

However it’s highly likely if you’re interested in virtual reality (VR) in any way you will have seen the titles revealed at this year’s expo and seen something that caught your fancy. And if you haven’t then you should probably check out our Best Games of E3 2017 feature for further insight! But if you liked what you saw you might be interested in working for the developers in question. So we’ve a selection of roles listed down for the developers  and, while they aren’t looking for anyone specifically at the moment there’s also contact emails for Polyarc (Moss) and The Secret Location.

Polyarc on The World Of Moss and the adventures of their “Little Hero” Quill

Outside of the trinity of announcements from Bethesda Softworks – Doom VFR, Fallout 4 VR and the newly revealed The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR – quite possibly no other virtual reality (VR) videogame title on display at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) got more tongues wagging both in-VR and outside of it than Moss. Even if a lot of it was how cute the protagonist looked.

Developer Polyarc’s delightful looking platformer where you guide adventurous swordswoman Quill on a magical journey to solve puzzles, conquer dangers and genereally be a heroic little mouse.

Did we mention that she’s a mouse? That’s kind of important.

VRFocus has already got hands-on with the game at E3 and were delighted to find the product’s quality matched its initial charm and beautiful artistic style. We also took time to speak to Polyarc’s Chris Alderson who works as the Art Director on the videogame. He explains the backstory behind “little hero” Quill’s adventure and what we can expect in the game.

VRFocus is at E3 all week, be sure to chekc back regularly for more interviews and features.

Preview: Moss – The Greatest Things Come In The Smallest Packages

Polyarc’s reveal of the PlayStation VR exclusive Moss was undoubtedly a highlight of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) press conference ahead of the opening of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) this week. The colourful backdrops and beautiful animation of lead mousketeer, Quill, seemed far from the stark environments and inanimate objects that virtual reality (VR) has offered in much of its first year as a consumer product. The good news? It looks just as wonderful on the head-mounted display (HMD) as it does in that trailer.

The demo VRFocus experienced appeared to take place at the very start of the videogame. The player is cast as a friend of Quill, though takes direct control of her in the same fashion as Lucky’s Tale; the on-screen character will take note of your presence, visibly offering hints to solve puzzles and a direction to follow, though here the player has the ability to interact with the world indirectly of Quill. A gentle start to the demo allowed the player to become familiarised with the combination of a traditional third-person adventure videogame control scheme and the DualShock 4’s motion-control, before providing a simple logic challenge.

The combat is basic in this early build. A three-hit combo allows Quill to get the better of enemies, even when multiple are attacking at once. Should she take damage the player can heal her by locking onto with one of the triggers and wiggling the controller. It’s simple and intuitive to control both Quill and your own interaction simultaneously, as is demanded by the aforementioned puzzle.

In the penultimate area of the demonstration version of Moss, the player has to examine the area before combining Quill’s abilities with their own. A large rotating cylinder in the centre of the room must be unlocked by pressing two switches simultaneously. Quill can stand on one, but the player must lock to an enemy and drag them onto the other, and then rotate the cylinder manually using the DualShock 4 controllers motion input. Once a path has been created, Quill and the enemy must switch positions to offer further advancement. This simple puzzle is a perfect introduction to the relationship between Quill and the player, the environment interaction the player can have and the types of puzzles that Moss will throw at you.

While no videogame should be judged on the merit of its visual quality alone, the beauty of Moss’ art direction is more than worthy of note. Created using Unreal Engine 4, Moss features a staggering amount of detail in its densely populated areas; leaves that rustle under feet, particle and water effects that bring life to the forest Quill calls home, and Quill herself is one of the most elegantly animated character models not just in VR, but in videogames as a whole. Quite simply, Moss looks stunning.

Already confirmed for release later this year, Moss deserves a place on your ‘most wanted’ list. After just one short play, the tease of more taxing puzzles and the forming of a non-verbal relationship with the adorable Quill is very compelling. The hope is high that Polyarc will carve a lengthy adventure that takes full advantage of the mechanics that have been laid out in this early demo, and VRFocus will be sure to follow Moss all the way to launch.

Polyarc Reveal Further Details on PlayStation VR title Moss

Today, Polyarc has introduced the world to its new virtual reality (VR) adventure title Moss. Announced during Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) E3 2017 press conference, Moss is a puzzle experience featuring a new pint-sized hero, a mouse called Quill. While the footage shown during the press conference showcased a little of what to expect Polyarc has now gone into further detail.

Talking about its latest project, Tam Armstrong, co-founder and CEO of Polyarc said in a statement: “We are designing Moss with the fundamentals that we know make a great action-adventure game while at the same time considering every decision with the unique strengths and opportunities VR offers fully in mind. As a studio dedicated to the new medium of VR, our goal is still the dream we’ve always had as game developers—to create engaging worlds and share them with everyone.”

Describing the gameplay Danny Bulla, co-founder and design director of Polyarc commented: “In Moss, players can reach out, touch, and interact with the environment while guiding Quill through her journey. As a character within the world, players will work together with Quill to solve puzzles, overcome obstacles, and conquer any danger that comes their way. As gamers, we’ve been conditioned for years to hold a gamepad in our laps when playing games, letting our thumbs and fingers do the controlling. It has been a great experience to create an immersive game that encourages players to reach into and interact with a tactile world.”

“Developing a game like Moss has been an inspiring challenge. We have the chance to connect the players to the world and characters in an entirely new and exciting way. For example, Quill can see you and she reacts to your movements as well as the environments you interact with,” said Chris Alderson, co-founder and art director of Polyarc. “Our goal is to let the player’s senses teleport them to a world where the characters and environments truly feel alive.”

Moss has only been confirmed for PlayStation VR so expect it to be exclusive to the platform – SIE tends to like its exclusives – and it’ll release globally this holiday season.

As Polyarc reveals further details about Moss, VRFocus will bring you the latest details.

Moss Announced for PlayStation VR, by Former Bungie Developers

Sony’s E3 2017 press conference pulled out all the stops – a musical intro, incredible exclusive game trailers, and – most importantly – plenty of brand new PlayStation VR games to get excited about. And finally, we get to see what the former Bungie developers who formed Polyarc Inc. have been up to all this time.

They’ve been busy developing Moss, a brand new – and totally adorable – adventure game for PlayStation VR. In Moss you help a mouse – presumeably named Moss – and you take him on an adventure through larger-than-life areas.

In Moss you will be focusing on puzzle solving and exploration, slowly finding your path forward through these huge stages. Butterflies and insects appear huge next to Moss as he’s entirely dwarfed by trees and other creatures – something that becomes very obvious when Moss comes face-to-face with a hungry snake.

The game truly looks stunning, with pretty water reflections, lighting, and that adorable art style that’ll leave you aww-ing at Moss and his floppy ears.

Polyarc’s Tam Armstrong has already shared his thoughts on the positives of VR; “Moss came from thinking about what VR is good at and it came from thinking about the first principles of what would make a good game. VR can transport you places and offers you the opportunity to physically interact with things. We wanted a rich environment with a strong sense of place and let you manipulate objects. It’s so much more powerful in VR.”

Moss doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’ll be hitting PlayStation VR.

Stay on VRFocus for all of the details on Moss, and all the other PlayStation VR titles announced at E3 2017, as soon as we have them.

Ex Bungie Devs Polyarc Secure $3.5m Funding for VR Content Creation

Seattle, Washington-based studio Polyarc Inc. has recently announced the raising of $3.5 million USD in investment through a Series A funding round.

Led by UCCVR with participation from Colopl VR Fund and Vulcan Capital, Polyarc plans to use the funding to develop leading virtual reality (VR) games. “From the moment we first saw VR prototypes our minds have been racing with the possibilities for intuitive interaction in games,” said Polyarc co-founder and CEO Tam Armstrong. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to be working with investors and partners that bring such a wealth of enthusiasm, industry experience and business acumen.”

Polyarc_Team_Founders3

Founded in 2015 by videogame veterans Tam Armstrong, Danny Bulla, and Chris Alderson, the team bring many years of AAA development knowledge to VR with previous titles including Destiny: The Taken King, Destiny, Red Dead Redemption, Halo: Reach, and Halo 3: ODST in their resumes.

Armstrong was an Engineering Lead at Bungie where he and his team created a full stack of character animation technology for Destiny. Bulla was a Senior Gameplay Designer at Bungie working on Destiny and previously as a Senior Designer at Rockstar. Finally Alderson rounds out the trio with his background as a Lead Character Artist at Bungie directing a team of artists for the characters in Destiny.

“Polyarc’s core team background speaks for itself. They are a group of gaming industry veterans with a proven track record and a deep understanding of VR technology. We are excited for the opportunity to be able to invest in and partner with Polyarc and like-minded creators building breakthrough content for the VR/AR market. Through this partnership, we are hoping to leverage UCCVR’s extensive Asia and China network in bringing Polyarc and their games to a truly global audience,” said Allen Foo, Founder and CEO of UCCVR.

In March 2016 Polyarc received an Unreal Developer Grant from Epic Games for an unannounced project codenamed Moss. The team plans to release their first VR title across multiple platforms in Q4 2017.
