Check out VR Running on the PlayStation 3

The launch of the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) is rapidly approaching, exclusively for PlayStation 4 owners. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has made no secret of the device’s long gestation period, yet little is known about what existed outside of the company’s internal research teams. As it turns out, keen experimenters beat SIE to the punch by an entire console generation.

Datura VR on PlayStation 3

Through the use of popular PlayStation 3 videogame Datura, Plastic Studios made incorporated the Sony HMZ-T1 HMD with PlayStation Move tracking technology, as seen in early PlayStation VR prototype reveals, along with the PlayStation Eye camera, PlayStation Move controllers and PlayStation 3 itself to create a brand new version of the videogame. Here, movements were tracked in real-time and actions, such as cutting through handcuffs with a handsaw, called upon direct motion-tracked input.

Datura launched on PlayStation 3 as an exclusive release back in 2012 to decidedly mixed reviews. How would a virtual reality (VR) edition of the videogame have faired? Perhaps we’ll never know, but Plastic Studios has put together a video detailing their experiences, available below.

The PlayStation VR HMD is set to launch on 13th October 2016. To ensure you’re ready for launch check out VRFocusguide to the best accessories for PlayStation VR.

Call of Duty Jackal Assault VR Experience Coming to PlayStation VR

Taking place this weekend is the Call of Duty XP event in Los Angeles, California. It was a couple of months ago that VRFocus reported that Activision would be showcasing a virtual reality (VR) experience at the event and now further details have emerged that its not just a one off.

Called Jackal Assault, the first Call of Duty VR experience puts players in the cockpit of a Jackel, the personal fighter jet in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Fans attending the event will be able to play Jackal Assault but those unable to visit won’t miss out. Activision has revealed the VR experience will be available as a free bonus for all Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare players on PlayStation 4. So anyone who’s ordered a PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) will be able to dive into Call of Duty in VR.

Rob Kostich, EVP and GM, Call of Duty, Activision commented: “The Jackal Assault is a cool, fun extension that’s inspired by Infinite Warfare. We’re excited to not only share this experience with Call of Duty XP fans this weekend, but give it for free to all Infinite Warfare PS4 players later this year.”

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare launches on 4th November 2016, but prior to that a beta starts on 14th October for PlayStation 4 owners, head here for further details.

Officially Branded PlayStation VR Accessories Revealed

The PlayStation VR head-mounted display is mere weeks from consumer release, and with that comes both anticipation and preparation for the launch. Many readers will have already familiarised themselves with VRFocus guide to the best accessories for PlayStation VR, but today comes the reveal of something altogether different.

The success of modern virtual reality (VR) has often been said to hang on the idea of convincing people to try it: those who have a good experience in their first instance quickly become believers. So what better way to get people to experience VR than through their early-adopter friends? Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has already thought of this it seems, partnering with RDS Industries to manufacture the officially branded ‘RDS PlayStation VR Headset and Accessories Deluxe Carrying Case’.

RDS Industries PlayStation VR Case_1

The RDS PlayStation VR Headset and Accessories Deluxe Carrying Case features separate compartments for the PlayStation VR HMD with cable, processor unit and AC adaptor pockets. A removable mesh pocket holds PlayStation VR HMD Connection cable, HDMI cable and USB cable Hard Shell case for maximum protection.

Measuring 15 x 9 x 7.8 inches, the RDS PlayStation VR Headset and Accessories Deluxe Carrying Case is compact in design given the size of the HMD and necessary cables/processor unit, and has a top-mounted carrying handle for portability. It should be noted however, that there is no space within the RDS PlayStation VR Headset and Accessories Deluxe Carrying Case for software. Of course, it is generally expected that most PlayStation VR early adopters will purchase videogames and experiences for the HMD digitally, and thus can be accessed via any PlayStation 4 console upon which their PlayStation Network (PSN) account is installed.

Available to pre-order via Amazon, the RDS PlayStation VR Headset and Accessories Deluxe Carrying Case is priced at $59.99 USD and set for release in North America on 31st October 2016. No UK or European release has yet been announced, but of course VRFocus will keep you updated with the latest details on this and other officially branded PlayStation VR accessories.

New Trailer for Secret Sorcery’s PlayStation VR Launch Title Tethered Released

With Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE’s) PlayStation VR only a few weeks away from launch all eyes will not only be on the head-mounted display (HMD) but also the videogames available on day one. PlayStation VR is due to have quite a sizeable selection of titles with Secret Sorcery’s Tethered featuring. The studio has today released a new trailer detailing more of the title and its story.

The debut virtual reality (VR) title from Secret Sorcery, Tethered is a magical strategy videogame where players have to save the world and its inhabitants ‘peeps’ from evil. The new trailer showcases the hand drawn artwork and aesthetics that players can expect to see, with floating worlds, distant waterfalls and the colourful creatures that populate the world.

On the PlayStation.Blog Alan McDermott, Creative Director, Secret Sorcery talked about some of the work that’s gone into Tethered: “As we approach master submission, our dedicated and passionate little team continue to pour all of our energy into polishing the game and ensuring it offers loads of entertainment and a real strategic challenge.

“We’ve added depth and complexity to the buildings, resources and combat systems. We’re also continuing to carefully craft the beautiful worlds of Tethered – delicately hand painting objects and landscapes and creating a lush audio experience to ensure we maximize the magical sense of wonder when you take your first steps in our universe.”

VRFocus got to preview Tethered back in June and also sat down with Managing Director, Scott Kirkland for further details on the project. For all the latest updates on Tethered and Secret Sorcery, keep reading VRFocus.

Celebrities in VR: Videogames, Movies & Investment

Virtual reality (VR) is a pervasive new medium. While it’s currently being lead by videogames – as was expected by many over the past three years of gestation – there are plenty of other areas in which VR will in time become a dominating presence. Hollywood is one of these, and many celebrities have already begun vocalising their support. Some have in fact gone even further however, lending their talents or finance to videogames and short movie productions.

Katee Sackhoff

Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Riddick actor Katee Sackhoff is famed for her science-fiction adventures, so who better to star in VR’s first sci-fi blockbuster? EVE Valkyrie casts Sackhoff as Rán Kavik, stalwart leader of the Valkyrie pilots. Sackhoff is presented as your comrade during story-driven moments and a commentator on the action during multiplayer gameplay. She is suspiciously aware of your successes and failures, and is quick to condemn a poor performance.

Henry is a short film from Oculus Story Studio, currently available for free to all Oculus Rift early adopters. It depicts a loveable cartoon hedgehog that’s having a bit of a rough time. See, Henry loves hugs, but his spiky exterior is not all too welcoming for his friends. As such, he finds himself in a very lonely situation at his birthday party.

In a rather odd turn of events, Oculus Story Studio decided not to make a big deal out of the fact that Elijah Wood, who shot to fame in his role of Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, is the sole voice viewers will hear throughout the film. Wood acts as the narrator, guiding the player through Henry’s misery and into an unsurprisingly smile-inducing resolution.

The first Esper videogame, originally developed for Samsung Gear VR, featured some rather humorous voice-acting courtesy of Norm MacDonald (My Name is Earl, Mike Tyson Mysteries, Family Guy), but it was the sequel that really upped-the-ante. Coatsink rallied the talents of Nick Frost (Spaced, Shaun of the Dead), Lara Pulver (True Blood, Sherlock) and regular videogame voice talent Sean Pertwee (Event Horizon, Gotham) to lend their voices to Esper 2, offering the biggest celebrity cast of any VR videogame to date.

The recent Steam Early Access release of Firebird: La Peri saw John Rhys-Davies, actor famed for playing the character of Sallah in two Indiana Jones movies and Gimli in the big screen adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, deliver a narrative for Innerspace VR’s recreation of the classical piece, La Peri.

“When working on the Firebird franchise, it was evident that we wanted a strong voice and John Rhys-Davies was the obvious choice. His legacy in gaming and entertainment is unparalleled,” said Balthazar Auxietre, CCO and co-founder of Innerspace VR.

Although Kevin Spacey is yet to appear in any VR productions himself, the actor made a bold early move investing in the technology. Woofbert VR, a content production company specialising in short film, is the benefactor of Spacey’s enthusiasm. Having stated that it was the Oculus Rift that ‘opened his eyes’ to the possibilities of VR in theatre, Spacey recognises that: “A lot of the early problems with the technology have been solved, it’s time for the content creators to produce.”

Psychological Thriller Weeping Doll Seeks Steam Greenlight Support

Steam Greenlight has been a useful avenue for virtual reality (VR) developers seeking to gain notice of their projects and to succeed in launching a videogame on the popular retail platform. Today Chinese developer TianShe Media’s debut VR title Weeping Doll has arrived, looking for community support.

Weeping Doll is a psychological thriller where players are cast as the titular weeping doll, uncovering a storyline about a missing family and the empty house in which it resides.

Weeping Doll screenshot

Designed from the ground up for VR and supporting both the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR head-mounted displays (HMDs), Weeping Doll mixes exploration with puzzle solving as players need to search the home, scour every room and scrutinise over every detail to piece together the story. The videogame will reward players curiosity, unravelling more layers of the story the house is explored, not just by looking but also keeping an ear open.

Created using Unreal Engine, TianShe Media has created what it calls the Shadow Step system. This the studio claims reduces simulator sickness, allowing the player to move around the environment using the controller while seated comfortably.

A VR specialist studio, TianShe Media was founded in early 2015 to create unique experiences for VR players. The team comes from a diverse range of backgrounds and skills: from seasoned game developers from the likes of 2K Games China (Civilization, Top Spin, Borderlands Online) to Escape Room designers.

The title was first revealed at Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE’s) PlayStation VR Asia Conference, as part of the Chinese developers section. These also included Ace Banana; MIXIP; Kill X VR; Pixel Gear; Dying Reborn, Phantom World. Then earlier this week Oasis Games, a Chinese publishing partner of Sony Computer Entertainment Shanghai (SCES) revealed Weeping Doll along with four other titles coming to the headset during the launch window.

Weeping Doll is scheduled for release in Q4 2016, and for all the latest Steam VR news, keep reading VRFocus.

PlayStation VR Title Happy Manager to Debut at Tokyo Game Show 2016

There’s only a couple of weeks to go until this years Tokyo Game Show 2016 (TGS) opens its doors and details on what virtual reality (VR) demos will be available are already being revealed. D3 Publisher has now announced that its title Happy Manager for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE’s) PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD), will be on demonstration.

The developer hasn’t revealed any further information on Happy Manager since its initial announcement in June. At the time D3 Publisher launched a dedicated website for the videogame which simply stated ‘Coming Soon’, alongside listing a winter 2016 release date. That website currently remains unchanged, so this months TGS will be the first time solid details on the project are likely to be revealed. What we can tell you is that Happy Manager is a love simulation/adventure title, but as with so many Japanese titles a western release has yet to be confirmed.

Also announced for TGS 2016 earlier today was a collaboration between HTC Vive and Square Enix on Kai-ri-Sei Million Arthur VR. The card-based brawler will be on demonstration at the event with a launch date scheduled for Spring 2017.

TGS 2016 will be taking place from 15th – 18th September at the Makuhari Messe, Tokyo, Japan, with the first two days dedicated to trade and industry professionals while the final to days will be open to the public.

With SIE gearing up for a worldwide launch of PlayStation VR on 13th October, the Tokyo Game Show will be one of the last big events to take place prior to launch, so the company is likely to put on a big showcase on its home turf. For all the latest VR news from TGS 2016, keep reading VRFocus.

A Guide to Cross-Platform Gaming in VR: PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Windows PC

Cross-platform gameplay has always been a heated debate amongst videogame fans. Since the early ‘90s Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and Mega-Drive (aka Genesis) from Nintendo and Sega, respectively, gamers have always wondered what it would be like for the rival systems to work co-operatively and allow everyone to play together. In virtual reality (VR), there are a number of opportunities for this, with some developers already pursuing their own paths.

Vive_Vs_PSVR_vs_Rift

Last year Microsoft began a debate concerning online gameplay between Xbox and PlayStation consoles, and suggested that they would be open to such an agreement. Indeed, it’s the Redmond based team that has been most conscientious of cross-platform gameplay for over a decade, with Windows Vista promoted as a synced platform with Xbox 360 through Halo 2 and Shadowrun, Windows Phone promised (but rarely delivered upon) instant resume for videogames released on both Xbox 360 and the mobile format and now Windows 10 gamers able to join with Xbox One through the upcoming ‘Play Anywhere’ programme.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) also has their Remote Play system, in which PlayStation 4 videogames can be streamed to the PlayStation Vita through a local network, but aside from recent murmurings concerning PlayStation Now coming to PC it’s been largely reserved to SIE (or other Sony division) hardware. However, it now seems that SIE could lead the way for cross-platform gameplay when it comes to VR.

Below are a few titles which highlight the potential of cross-platform gameplay, blazing a trail for others to follow:

EVE Valkyrie Screenshot

EVE Valkyrie on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive & PlayStation VR

CCP Games are an aggressor in the VR space. Their development strategy expands into new territories backed by a hugely popular franchise – EVE Online – and the company isn’t afraid to show their wares long before release. EVE Valkyrie originally made its debut back in 2013, yet didn’t launch until March 2016, alongside the Oculus Rift itself. CCP Games has already confirmed that EVE Valkyrie will also see release on HTC Vive and has long been showing-off the PlayStation VR version. However, the company has also confirmed that all three editions of the videogame will allow for cross-platform gameplay, with teams in a single match set to be comprised of Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR players.

War Thunder screenshot

War Thunder on Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR

Though technically not officially released for Oculus Rift, War Thunder is already compatible with the head-mounted display (HMD) through Gaijin Entertainment’s own execution. Additionally, War Thunder is already available for PlayStation 4 and will be compatible with PlayStation 4 sometime around the launch of the HMD. Gaijin Entertainment already allow PlayStation 4 and PC gamers to play together and make no exceptions of those playing in VR. A launch on PlayStation VR is not likely to change this openness of gameplay one bit. For this one however, you’re likely to need a flight control stick: check out VRFocusguide to the best flight control sticks for PlayStation 4 here.

World War Toons in VR & Non-VR

Reload Studios has spoken about cross-platform gameplay for the forthcoming World War Toons previously, though there’s been no confirmation of whether PlayStation 4 players will be able to go head-to-head with PC gamers. However, the studio has confirmed that a non-VR version is in development and, in fact, VRFocus has experienced this already. A fine balancing act, given World War Toons’ fast-paced first-person shooter (FPS) action.

oculus_rift_xbox_touch

Xbox One VR

The Xbox One’s VR compatibility looks set to appear later than that of PlayStation 4, with the recently revealed Project Scorpio console designated a VR compatible platform. So what does this mean for cross-platform gameplay? Given that Microsoft has been making moves to bring PC and Xbox closer together – and more recently open to the idea of co-operating with SIE for PlayStation cross-platform gameplay also – it’s likely that this will already be part of Microsoft’s strategy. Exactly what form it will take however, we’re unlikely to see until next year.
