PlayStation VR Party: The Best Games for a Fun Night with Friends

The launch of the PlayStation VR has been deemed a success by many, with even Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) seemingly caught unawares by the demand for the virtual reality (VR) hardware. But satisfying the early adopters is a much easier task than achieving mass market appeal, as has been seen time-and-again with peripherals in the videogame industry. One ideal is for those early adopters to become evangelists for the hardware, but doing so takes just the right kind of software.

Keen to ensure that VR can be enjoyed by families and friends as well as the core videogame demographic, every early adopter of the head-mounted display (HMD) should consider a purchase of PlayStation VR Worlds. A selection of mini-games both family friendly and more maturely themed, PlayStation VR Worlds offers a taste of the potential of VR without daunting newcomers with the possibility of a ten hour experience; or even just an hour, for that matter. Once that initial boundary has fallen what else can PlayStation VR offer to get the party swinging?

The Playroom VR

Playroom VR – Sony Interactive Entertainment

Playroom VR is a free download for all PlayStation VR early adopters, so why haven’t you got it yet? Well you probably have, and already have dived into the couch multiplayer style mini-games included. The essence of Playroom VR is that players armed with a DualShock 4 controller both work with and against the player wearing the PlayStation VR HMD. Monster Escape grants the solo HMD wearing player the ability to crush their foes as they combat one-to-four players who are trying to evade the large green beast towering down upon them, while Ghost House has the players working co-operatively to hunt supernatural beings in a cartoon haunted house. Playroom VR is a fantastic way of demonstrating this new technology without the fear of the many complicated implications of VR.

Werewolves Within screenshot 1

Werewolves Within – Ubisoft

A somewhat underrated PlayStation VR title, Werewolves Within is the essence of social interaction in VR. Although there’s no local multiplayer option – meaning the laughs will come from sharing the HMD around your friends opposed to getting the better of one another – Werewolves Within is an elaborate guessing game that is as fun as you choose to make it. Don’t underestimate the comedy value of merging new players online with the friends sat next to you on the couch.

Carnival Games VR-Alleyball

Carnival Games VR – 2K Games

One of the biggest selling franchises on the hugely successful Nintendo Wii console is also available on PlayStation VR, however this time around things are a bit different. Those looking for an immediate and accessible videogame to play with their family or a friend unacquainted with VR – or videogames as a whole, for that matter – could do far worse. Carnival Games VR promises a palatable experience with extremely low barriers for entry.

Ace Banana – Oasis Games

Ace Banana tasks the players with defending a pile of bananas from evil invader monkeys. Who doesn’t want to do that? You’ll have to put your archery skills to the test using PlayStation Move controllers in a VR experience that is designed to increase in difficulty as players choose their own play style: from short bursts to longer endurance tests. What’s more, the entire videogame can be played co-operatively. How’s that for multiplayer monkey-wrangling?

Sports Bar VR - checkers

Sports Bar VR – CherryPop Games

Much like Werewolves Within, Sports Bar VR isn’t social multiplayer for local players. However, it is the most social VR experience currently offered across any HMD. Originally launched as Pool Nation VR on HTC Vive, the PlayStation VR version lags a little behind the debut due to the lack of roomscale tracking, however CherryPop Games has worked very hard to ensure that the experience of being in a virtual space with complete strangers is just as entertaining. The name change came about due to the fact that pool became just one element of the videogame, with air hockey, ball games, darts and more now included as standard.

Sony London Studio Head Forms New VR Studio ‘Dream Reality Interactive’

Dave Ranyard, who headed up Sony’s London Studio throughout PlayStation VR’s development, has announced the formation of a new VR-focused game Dream Reality Interactive.

Dave Ranyard was arguably the public face of Sony’s Morpheus (aka PlayStation VR) project in the early days of its public life, after its unveiling at 2014’s Game Developer Conference. Ranyard headed up Sony’s London Studio and were tasked with exploring the possibilities and pitfalls of VR gaming and just what would become the world’s first console VR platform.

Ranyard led the team responsible for the PSVR launch title VR Worlds, a collection of experiences which represented the most successful of their years of experimentation. The compilation included such varied offerings as London Heist,

However, not long after the PlayStation VR’s launch in October of last year, Sony announced it was making some structural changes to its London Studios which meant job losses. Now, perhaps as a result of those changes, the head of Sony London is stepping down from his post and is setting up a new development house, Dream Reality Interactive, focused on virtual reality gaming.

Ranyard said of the move “With the availability of a range of VR headsets the question is no longer IF virtual reality will be successful, it is WHEN and most importantly, HOW? None of us really knows the answer but after a fantastic 17 years at Sony, now feels like the right time to explore the possibilities. Going independent allows me to work across all platforms and that’s very liberating.”

And Ranyard won’t be the only Sony London alum. at the studio, as some of his former teammates are joining him. Richard Bates, Artemis Tsouflidou, Albert Bentall and John Foster, who were all “integral to the development of ‘VR Worlds’ for Sony’s PSVR headset” are joining Ranyard at Dream Reality Interactive. The new studio is already is already “working on several projects and prototypes, creating its own IP in addition to developing titles in partnership with other IP owners, across a variety of VR headsets.”

It’s difficult to estimate Sony London Studio’s impact on VR gaming’s landscape. The team were one of the earliest to begin defining the do’s and don’ts of VR as a gaming platform and as such those joining Ranyard on his new venture may arguably have some of the most experienced VR developers in the business. We’re therefore very much looking forward to seeing what Dream Reality Interactive have to offer in the future.

New PlayStation VR Bundles Confirmed for February

When Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) launched pre-orders for PlayStation VR, depending on the territory, some countries featured bundle deals while others didn’t. The US had the biggest selection, but since launch supplies have been somewhat limited. Today SIE America has announced two incoming bundles are to arrive this month.

The first PlayStation VR Bundle is the same as previously available. For $499 USD / $699 CAD (MSRP) customers get the headset, PlayStation Camera, two PlayStation Move motion controllers, the PlayStation VR demo disc and PlayStation VR Worlds.

PlayStation VR Rush of Blood Bundle

The second bundle includes all of the same hardware and demo disc but swaps out PlayStation VR Worlds for Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. This bundle will become available later this month for $499 USD / $699 CAD, exclusively from GameStop and EB Games.

Currently there’s no news on these bundles being made available outside of the US, so PlayStation 4 users wishing to get into virtual reality (VR) in any other country still have to buy everything separately.

For anyone into their horror video games PlayStation VR currently has an ace up its sleeve with the VR exclusive of Resident Evil 7 biohazard. The latest instalment launched just over a week ago with 88,000 users having tried the VR mode at the time – its now up to 95,000.

And there’s plenty more coming in 2017, with titles such as Farpoint, Golem, Gran Turismo Sport, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin and Star Trek: Bridge Crew just a few of them. For all of the latest PlayStation VR news, keep reading VRFocus.

This Week In VR Sport: WWE’s Stars Are Wowed By PSVR, Tottenham Creates New Home Preview

With the Computer Entertainment Show (CES) now long done there’s been several stories here and there since Christmas that have involved sport in some small way. Some though you may not have even realised involved sport as is the case with one item in our weekly round-up.

Tottenham Takes Fans On A Trip To The New White Hart Lane

London-based football club Tottenham Hotspur have turned to virtual reality (VR) as an additional means of showcasing what the club’s £400 million redevelopment of its historic White Hart Lane ground will look like. According to the UK’s Daily Star, the club has created a 360 degree virtual walkthrough, available on Oculus Rift’s at the ground, for fans who want to get an idea of what the stadium will look like when work is complete.

The new stadium will all but double the current capacity of the ground to 61,000 which is also set to act as a concert venue and a new home for the NFL’s semi-regular London visits. You can see a preview video here.

WWE’s Stars Take On PlayStation VR In Latest UpUpDownDown Let’s Play Videos

It should not surprise you that even the most devoted athlete is also an avid gamer, and that’s no more truer than in the locker room of the WWE. In fact, if you did not know it, WWE superstar Xavier Woods is so passionate about the subject he hosts his own gaming YouTube channel UpUpDownDown in his spare time, which features many of the stars of the WWE as they relax and blow off steam between shows. That’s not to say they aren’t competitive – as anyone who has seen their annual Madden tournaments can attest to.

Their latest recording in the Monday Night RAW dressing room has focused on the PlayStation VR, with Woods inviting first superstars Cesaro to become a gangster in the PlayStation VR Worlds Collection‘s The London Heist and R-Truth to take on Danger Ball. The gameplay quickly draws the attention of other wrestlers, who whether heels or faces (bad guys or good guys, if you’re not up on wrestling’s vernacular) are keen to see what VR has to offer, some even relaying their own experiences. RAW superstar Sami Zayn even exclaiming that “This is the future!” Although Chris Jericho jokingly (we hope) doesn’t look too impressed. C’mon Chris, it’s the gift of VR! Drink it in maaaaan!

You can see how well both Cesaro and R-Truth did in the videos below.

The Vive Tracker Targets Sports Training

The announcement of the Vive Tracker at CES caught many by surprise. Announced alongside the Vive’s ‘Deluxe Audio Strap’ the future-proofed interface to VR accessories that will allow connectability and motion tracking of many objects had a number of active demonstrations for attendees to try. One of these included, as the press release puts it, “training applications for Major League Baseball players”.

VR’s use as not only as its widely acknowledged position as recreational platform but as a training and educational tool has long been touted by those in the industry. VRFocus has covered many stories of professional sports teams and players investing in the technology and it is interesting that this was specifically called out in the release.

The trailer for the tracker too also targeted sports, showing the tracker being suggested for use in tennis and golf. It will certainly be interesting to see who, if anyone, takes up the suggestion.

Cycle Training Gets Gamified With FitBit and VirZoom

It’s arguably a match made in technology heaven. The sort that makes you wonder why no one thought of it before. But VirZOOM, purveyor of online multiplayer VR sports experiences played via their eponymous bike accessory has teamed up with health and fitness wearable firm FitBit.

The partnership sees users gain credit for your virtual ride within the FitBit app, effectively bringing an additional level of gamified tracking to workouts. Speaking in a press release, FitBit confirmed how things would work.

VirZOOM offers an easy online setup so all of your VirZOOM vSports and VirZOOM VR bike play will automatically sync to your Fitbit account, giving you credit toward your goals. Each workout will be logged as an exercise in the Fitbit app and will include workout duration, distance pedaled and calories burned. If you wear a Fitbit device that tracks heart rate during your VirZOOM session, your Fitbit heart rate data will also be captured in your exercise log in the Fitbit app. By syncing your VirZOOM workouts with your Fitbit account, all of your data will be in one centralized location so you can view a more complete picture of your overall health and fitness.

Fitbit’s Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Tim Rosa commented on the partnership: “We embrace new partnerships with brands that share our goal of creating experiences that enable people to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle and we are always looking for fun, innovative ways to keep our community engaged and motivated on their health and fitness journey, Whether you enjoy racing through a virtual reality world as an F1 driver, or you are motivated to pedal your heart out with a group class in the comfort of your own home, the Works with Fitbit program makes it easy for users to enjoy, track and measure their health and fitness stats all in one spot.”

VRFocus will be back next week with more sport related stories.

PlayStation VR Worlds Releases Soundtrack on Spotify

It was this time last week when we were all gearing up for the launch of the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD), and along with the launch of the HMD came a bunch of experiences and videogames that really brought it to life – this included the likes of PlayStation VR Worlds, which is a collection of five mini games. Today it has been said that if you have enjoyed the title, there is the official soundtrack posted on Spotify.

The tracks include the official opening to the game with Welcome to VR Worlds, and then moves onto each title starting with Ocean Descent whose main track is of the same name, followed by Manta Ray Moment, Jellyfish Cave, Submarine Reveal, Shark Attack. Scavengers Odyssey is next with the same track as its title, as well as Asteroid Hopping, Hatchlings, Scuttler Ambush, The Elevator, Exploring the Forbidden Belt, Sentinel Battle, and Coming Home. VR Luge features Mountain of Percussion and Desperate For The Luge.

Londonheist_morpheus1

The London Heist‘s tacks begin with To Be Frank, followed by Exploring Victor’s Drawers, Shooting Up Victor’s Office, The Getaway, and Frank & Mickies Fisticuffs. The last two on the soundtrack is Dangerball‘s own track, and the track for the VR Worlds Trailer.

These are all of course free to listen to on Spotify under PlayStation VR Worlds (Original Score), and there is a guarentee that if you have already played the title that you will be transported straight back to those exact moments.

PlayStation VR Makes a Big Impression in UK’s Videogame Chart

It’s now been five days since Sony Interactive Entertainment released its highly anticipated PlayStation VR headset into the world. The head-mounted display (HMD) has received a mixed bag of reviews with most being generally positive towards the device. While sales haven’t yet been released on the headset itself the GfK Chart-Track for UK videogame sales does paint a positive picture in these early days.

Bearing in mind that PlayStation VR launched on Thursday 13th, and the chart track’s listing are for just two days later ending Saturday 15th October, there are six PlayStation VR specific virtual reality (VR) titles in the top 40, with two further multiplatform VR videogames on the list as well.

psvr worlds logo

Taking the highest spot of any VR title is the compilation, PlayStation VR Worlds at number 7, while Supermassive Games’ on-rail shooter Until Dawn: Rush of Blood also makes it into the top 10 at number 9.

Next up is Guerrilla Cambridge with multiplayer shooter RIGS: Mechanized Combat League at number 12. CCP Games’ EVE: Valkyrie which supports cross-platform play between PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift sits at 20. Driveclub VR by Evolution Studios comes in at 23, with Rebellion’s tank shooter reboot Battlezone sits at 28. Loading Human which launched simultaneously for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, arrived at 36th place, with D3T’s Super Stardust Ultra VR last in the VR list at number 37.

For what is essentially an add-on to PlayStation 4, the fact that so many titles made it into the top 40 in a couple of days – with two in the top 10 – is the first good indicator of how well the headset has sold so far, although individual sales figures weren’t detailed and would prove to be useful.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of PlayStation VR, reporting back with any further updates

Choose Your Destiny With PlayStation VR Worlds Launch Trailer

PlayStation VR Worlds is one of the most talked about titles by PlayStation itself, and for good reason with the amount of variety you can experience in this packed title. The official launch trailer has been released ahead of the big day, and you can get a real idea of what you can become.

The five titles that make up PlayStation VR Worlds is The London Heist, Danger Ball, VR Luge, Scavengers Odyssey and Ocean Descent, but none of these names were included in the launch trailer below. Instead, the trailer asks you whether or not you want to be a gangster, sports star, street racer, treasure hunter, or a deep sea explorer, which certainly puts you in the right mindset of what PlayStation VR will really make you feel.
