Major Content Update Incoming Next Week for Espire 1: VR Operative, Adds Modes, Weapons & More

Espire1: VR Operative

Indie developer Digital Lode released its first virtual reality (VR) title Espire 1: VR Operative for multiple headsets at the end of last year, offering an action-packed stealth experience. Today, the studio has revealed details on its next big update which adds plenty of new features as well as other improvements.

Espire1

Dubbed the Espire 1: VR Operative Assimilation update, players will be able to enjoy 14 new challenges accessed via three new game modes; Intel, Weapons & Climbing.

The Intel mode has four levels to complete, a warehouse, office complex, Italian Villa and Copperhead Output. Players need to locate and hack intelligence from all workstations in the area, then reach the extraction point. While the Weapons gameplay mode offers seven courses. Aiming for a high score, players have to eliminate static, moving and explosive targets to achieve leaderboard success.

Lastly, the Climbing mode requires overcoming puzzles where speed and timing are vital whilst avoiding the fast-moving crushers. There are three challenges to complete but players do need to have finished the “Reech Division” mission in the campaign first.

Espire1

As for the new weapons players will be able to find the Espire semi-auto SMG and a sawn-off shotgun inside the Intel and Weapon challenge modes.

To improve the overall gameplay experience in Espire 1: VR Operative Digital Lode has added a recalibration option in the menu to adjust the location/size of the belt and chest holsters, changing the dominant hand and the recorded standing height. There’s also a selectable manual vault when climbing feature, turning off the standard ‘auto vault’ mechanic.

Other additions include:

Leaderboards improvements (Quest + PC only)

  • Leaderboard UI redesigned
  • Players want to filter the leaderboard to see their friends
  • Players want to view a leaderboard for any mission or challenge from within the main menu. Previously they had to start or even complete a mission just to see the leaderboard
  • Integrate the leaderboards with Oculus’ new “Scoreboard” app (Quest/Rift)
  • Fix various leaderboard-related bugs (leaderboard score not saved if user is temporarily disconnected/reconnected to their wifi when the mission finishes)

Grip interactions and physics pass

  • Should be easier to grab a sidearm from your belt without having to look down at your belt
  • Fixed an issue where players crouch down and try to grab a guard’s body, they often instead pick up a sidearm from their belt
  • Fixed an issue where players would attempt to grip a guard’s body and simultaneously ‘distance-grip’ the guard’s gun
  • Improved the physical properties of all props and objects in the game. They should now behave more realistically when interacted with.

The Espire 1: VR Operative Assimilation update will be made available for Oculus Quest and PC VR headsets on 5th May. The PlayStation VR version will arrive later, no date has been revealed at the moment. For further updates on the videogame, keep reading VRFocus.

UK Game Charts Indicate a Bumper Black Friday Weekend for PlayStation VR

It isn’t often that VRFocus reports on virtual reality (VR) videogames making the UK charts with the last time being Blood & Truth which hit the number one spot back in May. The Black Friday sales weekend definitely shook things up as GfK has just released its Ukie Games Charts, with three VR titles making the top 20.

PlayStation VR 2019 Mega PackThis will be thanks to PlayStation VR’s big sales savings which saw the Starter Pack reduced to £179.99 GBP – down from £259.99 – while the PlayStation VR Mega Pack 2019 was only £209.99 – normally £299.99. And it just so happens that three of those videogames in the Mega Pack made the top 20, while the other two made the top 40.

  • PlayStation VR Worlds – 14th place
  • Astro Bot Rescue Mission – 18th place
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR – 20th place
  • Resident Evil 7 Biohazard – 23rd place
  • Everybody’s Golf VR – 25th place.

Which isn’t bad considering the rest of the company on the charts. This provides a decent indicator of how popular VR is becoming in the UK and that PlayStation VR still retains a dominant role 3 years after launch. 2019 has seen PC VR rivals upgrade their hardware with inside-out tracking, new controllers and more, yet Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is still happy with the PlayStation VR design, with no apparent urge to update the headset just yet – although patents have indicated possible plans.

PlayStation VR

The Ukie Games Charts only go up to 30th November, excluding the Sunday and Cyber Monday sales days, so those numbers are likely to shift, hopefully in a positive direction.

Don’t expect any other indicators of VR sales as companies like Facebook/Oculus are renown for staying tight-lipped on units sales. Reports from the US have suggested the sales weekend has gone well with Oculus Quest selling out at major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, pushing up resale values in the process. However, Oculus Quest wasn’t discounted, only offered with Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR SeriesIt was Oculus Rift S and Oculus Go which both saw chunky $50 savings.

VRFocus will continue to report on the health and growth of the VR industry as further information is made available.

Skyrim VR, Astro Bot, Resident Evil 7 Included In New PSVR Bundle

Sony has announced a refreshed version of its PlayStation VR Mega Pack Bundle, available for pre-order in Europe now.

The new lineup of games included in the bundle are PlayStation VR Worlds, Skyrim VR, ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission, Everybody’s Golf VR and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

Resident Evil 7 and Everybody’s Golf VR are new to the bundle this year, replacing Doom VFR and the WipEout Omega collection from last year David was a big fan of Resident Evil 7 on PSVR back when it came out in 2017. In fact, he struggled to find any serious criticism, so it’s nice to see such a polished experience make its way into the bundle this year.

Everybody’s Golf VR is the most recently released title of the five, and David found it “extremely fun and engaging, even if lacking in terms of accuracy a bit due to the limitations of the PSVR as a platform.”

Skyrim VR and Astro Bot are also enjoyable PSVR titles, while PlayStation VR Worlds “feels like a poor attempt at creating a bundle game collection that could stand toe-to-toe with fully-developed games on retail shelves.”

PlayStation VR Mega Bundle Pack

It’s also important to note that the games included in the bundle are all digital codes for download, not physical copies. Also included in the box is a PSVR headset and a PS Camera. Move controllers are not included in the pack. While they aren’t essential for all PSVR games, some popular games like Beat Saber do require them. Some games in the bundle, like Skyrim and PlayStation VR Worlds, would also benefit from the Move controllers.

The pack also does not include a PS4, so you’ll need one of those (or a PS4 Pro) to actually use the PSVR equipment in the bundle.

The new Mega Pack bundle releases on October 4th, and will be “available through select retailers across multiple countries.” It is currently available for pre-order on Amazon UK for £299.99.

Amazon Prime Day VR Deals: PSVR & Go Prices Slashed, Quest Gets Case In UK

Looking for the best Amazon Prime Day VR deals? The site’s promotions have gone live in the UK and they feature savings on PSVR, HTC Vive Pro, Oculus Go, Oculus Rift and even Oculus Quest.

Prime Day is Amazon’s annual sales event. It’s running across June 15 + 16 and offers cut prices across the site’s entire range. This year’s Amazon Prime Dayh VR deals are surprisingly worthwhile. We’ll update this page when we know what the US deals look like.

PSVR Bundles

PSVR Starter Pack

There are two really excellent offers for Sony’s VR headset in the UK. For starters, there’s that PSVR Starter Pack for £179.99 (usual price £234.04). That price gets you the headset and the PlayStation Camera needed to track it. There’s also a free copy of PlayStation VR Worlds, Sony London’s VR minigame compilation.

Easily the best of the two bundles, though, is the PSVR Mega Pack for £209 (usually £299.99). This generous package includes PSVR, the camera, PSVR Worlds and then four other VR games. They include some of the best games on the system like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Wipeout VR and Skyrim VR. There’s also Doom VFR which, alongside Skyrim and PSVR Worlds, can be played with Move controllers that aren’t featured in either bundle.

Oculus Quest Bundles

Oculus Quest Bundle

Facebook and Oculus’ excellent standalone VR headset is too fresh to get a massive price cut. That said, Amazon is throwing in a little bonus for anyone that picks up a Quest today. You can get the 64GB model for the usual price of £399.99 with a free carry case thrown in. Take note that this is not the officially branded Oculus Quest carry case; it’s a third-party one we haven’t tried. It has room for your headset and controllers, though. You can get the 124GB model with the case for the price of £499.99 too.

Oculus Go Bundles

Oculus Go Facebook VR

Oculus’ first standalone headset may no longer be the new kid on the VR block, but it’s still worth a look for newcomers. The 32GB version is available for £159 (usually £194) and the 64GB version is going for £209 (usually £244). Go isn’t as advanced a headset as Quest, with restrictive tracking, but it’s a good device for VR viewing and casual gaming.

Oh and there are some travel case bundles too. Again, it’s not an official make but you can get the 32GB model for £175.99 (usually £213.99) and the 64GB for £225.99 (usually £263.99). Not bad!

Original Oculus Rift

oculus rift side

Surprisingly, it looks like some of the last-available original Oculus Rift units are on sale. There’s a small saving here; you can pick up the PC VR headset for £329.99 (usually £349.99). This will likely be one of the last opportunities you have to buy the original version of the device, which was replaced by the more accessible Rift S earlier this year. Some prefer the original’s tracking solution to the inside-out featured on S.

HTC Vive Pro Bundles

If you feel like going all out with the Amazon Prime Day VR deals then we’ve saved the most expensive for last. The HTC Vive Pro full kit has been bundled with the Vive Wireless Adapter and a Pro clip for £1,574.99 (usually £1,664.98). That’s a lot of money, but you’re getting a lot of headset. Firstly the Vive Pro features an upgraded resolution compared to the original Vive. The Wireless Adapter, meanwhile, lets you play the thing untethered from a PC via streaming. Even with all this, though, you might want to consider the more consumer-oriented Valve Index or upcoming Vive Cosmos before springing for this.

New PSVR ‘Mega Pack’ Europe Bundle Includes Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, Astro Bot, and Wipeout: Omega Collection

New PSVR ‘Mega Pack’ Europe Bundle Includes Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, Astro Bot, and Wipeout: Omega Collection

Sony is launching a new PSVR bundle in the UK, Germany, Austria and Switzerland next week. The ‘Mega Pack’ includes the headset, camera bar, Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, Astro Bot, and WipEout: Omega Collection. It also includes the PlayStation Worlds VR demo reel which gives you a taste of what’s possible in VR.

What the pack doesn’t include is Playstation Move controllers. If you want your hands in VR, you’ll need to buy those separately. They aren’t useful for Astro Bot or WipEout, but for Skyrim VR, and PlayStation VR Worlds and many of the best PSVR games on the store they really take the VR experience to the next level, so we highly recommend buying them too.

The company hasn’t announced the price yet, but given the pricing of the other similar PSVR bundles we’d expect it to come in at around £200-£250. This is a box that will be under many European Christmas trees this year.

Skyrim VR [9/10]

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is the whole game brought into virutal reality – DLC and all. This is no “experience” or experiment, this is the whole >100 hour game and all of its gameplay mechanics. We were highly impressed when we reviewed the game, stating:

For a game that wasn’t originally designed for VR at all and has been ported first to the least powerful of the big three VR platforms in the PSVR, Skyrim VR is nothing short of impressive. This really is the Skyrim that you know and love, but now you can enjoy it like never before with the immersive presence of a VR headset. With a large variety of control schemes to choose from and hundreds of hours of content, this is a game that all RPG fans should play as long as you can look past the sometimes glaring issues. And if you don’t own a PSVR yet, luckily there’s a new Skyrim VR bundle with your name on it.

DOOM VFR [6/10]

DOOM VFR is not a port, it’s an entry in the popular gore shooter franchise made specifically for VR. While it provides some great VR action, there are some problems on the PSVR version. As we stated in our review:

While Skyrim VR made a great case for the VR port, Doom VFR brings us back to the drawing board. On PSVR, the game has its moments, largely thanks to the foundations it was built upon with the 2016 original. In the end, though, the real fight is with its awkward control setups that eventually led me back to play with just a standard gamepad. Though the foundations of a hugely enjoyable shooter are intact, VFR’s struggle with the platform’s limitations makes it feel like the VR support is holding it back more than anything.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission [8.5/10]

Astro bot is one of those games that proves that 3rd person platformers can work just as well as 1st person games in VR. We really enjoyed reviewing this game, concluding:

Astro Bot is not here to reinvent the wheel or claim the throne as VR’s killer app; there are enough games trying to do that already. Instead, it fuzes the thrill of seeing a virtual world come to life with the dependably engaging gameplay of one of gaming’s most beloved genres and explores what that can mean with fascinating results. It’s a refreshing reminder of just how astonishing VR can be when there’s nothing in your way, and it’s an absolutely essential experience for any PSVR owner.

WipEout: Omega Collection [9/10]

WipEout: Omega Collection is the Wipeout you dreamed of back in 1995. As we stated in our review:

Wipeout VR is an eccentric mix of new and old; a series delivering on the same kind of regular reliability it has for over two decades but from an entirely fresh perspective. Everything you love about Wipeout is here but with a new lease of life, from the violent crunch of combat to the twitch-like reactions needed to navigate the many courses from the seat of your vehicle. It’s both Wipeout as you love it and as you’ve never seen it before, and one of the very best games you can get on PSVR yet.

Two Years On: PlayStation VR – Videogames

Though the PlayStation 4 is capable of a fair number of functions, it is primarily designed as a videogames console, so you would expect the focus for its software to be on videogames.

Some of the earliest virtual reality (VR) titles released for the PlayStation VR amounted to be mostly tech demos, but since then a fairly significant library of content has emerged for the PlayStation VR.

Early adopters of the PlayStation VR tended to get the bundle that came along with PlayStation VR Worlds, a collection of smaller VR experiences that served as an introduction to VR for many users. The experiences included include the critically acclaimed The London Heist, watery adventure Ocean Descent, sci-fi exploration Scavengers Odyssey, street racing title VR Luge and futuristic sport tournament Danger Ball.

One of the first big releases for the PlayStation VR was Battlezone from Rebellion Games. A VR update of the classic arcade title from Atari, in Battlezone players take control of a tank to travel through environments that have more than a nod in the direction of sci-fi cult film Tron to destroy other thanks and take out various objectives. Battlezone was popular and successful enough that it eventually got a release on PC VR.

One of the most lauded titles to be initially released on PlayStation VR is Moss from Polyarc Games, a title which accumulated nigh-universal praise from critics, getting top marks from VRFocus in its review and capturing the hearts of gamers the world over because protagonist Quill was just that adorable.

Moss screenshot

Often criminally overlooked is Polybius from Llamasoft, a space shooter in the vein of many classic arcade titles and taking its name from an infamous videogame urban legend. Its surreal aesthetics, incredible soundtrack and addictive gameplay ought to earn it a place in anyone’s PlayStation VR library.

If that isn’t enough, the following titles are also worth perusing if you are after something to add to your download queue.

Firewall Zero Hour is PlayStation VR’s Top Game in August

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has now released the top downloaded videogames for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR, revealing to probably no one’s surprise that First Contact Entertainment’s tactical first-person shooter Firewall Zero Hour  has clinched the top spot.

Firewall Zero Hour - Screenshot (E3 2018)

As usual no figures have been mentioned with the title knocking top ten regular Job Simulator from the number one spot it quite often achieves even after launching almost two years ago.

The rest of the PlayStation VR top ten for August is as follows:

  1. Firewall Zero Hour
  2. Job Simulator
  3. Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality
  4. SUPERHOT VR
  5. Killing Floor: Incursion
  6. Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality
  7. Arizona Sunshine
  8. Electronauts
  9. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
  10. PlayStation VR Worlds

Firewall Zero Hour - Screenshot (E3 2018)

It’s easy to understand why Firewall Zero Hour achieved the number one position. The FPS has received rave reviews with even VRFocus giving the PlayStation VR exclusive a full five-stars, saying: “Firewall Zero Hour has managed to avoid many of the common pitfalls of VR online multiplayers and add its own interesting twist to the military FPS genre. The lobby system could use some improvements, but otherwise its a finely crafted title that will be of great interest to FPS fans.”

If you own a PlayStation VR and have so far resisted the temptation to purchase Firewall Zero Hour then you’re missing out on four vs four player action where teamwork and communication is key to winning the multiplayer missions. Players take on the role of a mercenary contractor, charged with protecting sensitive data in a laptop. There are nine map locations spread across Russia, the Middle East and the UK. Players will be able to use in-game currency to upgrade and customise their character.

While the videogame does support PlayStation’s DualShock 4 controller, and PlayStation Move (kind of), First Contact Entertainment has designed the gameplay to ultimately use the PlayStation Aim controller.

For any further updates on Firewall Zero Hour, keep reading VRFocus.

PlayStation VR Worlds Back In UK Charts This Week, Suggests Good PSVR Sales

PlayStation VR Worlds Back In UK Charts This Week, Suggests Good PSVR Sales

It looks like Sony’s Days of Play sale is having a positive impact on its PlayStation VR (PSVR) headset.

PlayStation VR Worlds, the PSVR launch title from Sony’s London Studio, ranked in fifth place in this week’s UK games software charts from GFK. That means in the space of this week it even managed to outsell titans like Gran Theft Auto V, Mario Kart 8, Assassin’s Creed Origins and Call of Duty: WWII. The game costs only around £10 during Sony’s current promotion, which ends later this week.

There might be a big reason the game has sold so well, though. Copies of PSVR Worlds are bundled inside pretty much every PSVR unit sold in the UK right now, which will have boosted its sales somewhat. That might seem like cheating, though it actually suggests PSVR itself might have moved a healthy number of units over the course of the promotion. The headset’s starter pack also costs about £200 during the event.

Last we heard, PSVR had sold two million units worldwide. That said, we didn’t get an update on sales at E3 last week, which might suggest Sony hasn’t managed to pass the three million mark just yet.

DOOM VFR screenshot

DOOM VFR

“Ultimately DOOM VFR stands as a fine example of just what can be achieved with the FPS genre in VR as of today, lining-up against Robo Recall as an action-heavy experience that throws the rulebook out of the window. It’s true that the visual quality has suffered dramatically and the control systems could be seen as far too awkward by many, but the fact that DOOM VFR pushes so hard against the VR grain makes it well worth any PlayStation VR owner’s time and money.” – Read VRFoucs’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of DOOM VFR.

DOOM VFR is available now for £14.99 (GBP) down from the usual £19.99.

gran turismo sport image

Once more, with PlayStation VR, players can fully immerse themselves and head out to the track, feeling the rush of the race as they drive at top speed and take every turn as tight as possible. This is how racing was meant to be.

Gran Turismo Sport is available now for £15.99 (GBP) down from £49.99 with a Digital Deluxe Edition available for £24.99 (GBP) down from £59.99, with PlayStation Plus members getting an extra 5% discount on both titles.

Volume: Coda screenshot

Volume

British based developer Mike Bithell is known for his popular indie title Thomas Was Alone and Volume. The latter of which has a VR expansion which is available for free within the base game. Players are tasked to sneak around and avoid enemies, traps, and all sorts of bad things as they try to steal from the rich and give to the poor. Making use of a number of gadgets to get the job done, players will need to navigate through 100 levels of stealth action, along with then being able to enter Volume: Coda which offers plenty more of the stealth action, all within PlayStation VR.

Volume is available now for £3.29 (GBP) down from £14.99 and includes the free Volume: Coda VR expansion.

Light Tracer Screenshot

Light Tracer

Light Tracer is a well-crafted VR platform title. Once you get used to the controls, it becomes challenging enough to keep you coming back for more. There are some very frustrating elements, but not enough to spoil the gameplay entirely. Having said that, Light Tracer is at its best when played in relatively small doses. Like a plate of snacks to nibble on instead of a feast, but still just as tasty.” – Read VRFocus’ Staff Writer Rebecca Hills-Duty’s review of Light Tracer.

Light Tracer is only £3.29 (GBP) down from £9.99.

PlayStation VR Worlds

Easily the must have PlayStation VR title, PlayStation VR Worlds offers players a number of different experiences to lose them self in and witness the full extent of what VR has to offer. The pack includes moments such as The London Heist, Ocean Descent, Scavengers Odyssey, VR Luge, and Danger Ball. If you don’t have this title in your collection yet then make sure to pick it up and try all the experiences.

Resident Evil 7 - Family

The photorealistic world is full of danger and every action could be your last.

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is currently £14.99 (GBP) down from £19.99 with PlayStation Plus members getting an extra 5% discount.

Bloody Zombies

Bloody Zombies

“The visual design of Bloody Zombies has obviously taken VR into account throughout, with the 2D characters appearing like cardboard cutouts when the VR player moves their view alongside the action opposed to in front of it. This is obviously why nDreams – a publisher that has solely committed to VR content – took an interest in Paw Print Games’ Bloody Zombies to begin with. And they were right to do so, as while Bloody Zombies doesn’t reinvent the scrolling beat-‘em-up wheel, it does offer a convincing argument for 2D videogames making the jump to the more immersive medium.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of Bloody Zombies.

Bloody Zombies is currently on sale for £4.49 (GBP) down from £10.99.

ARK Park - DLC - Screenshot

ARK Park

Football Nation VR 2018

Football Nation VR Tournament 2018 (Formally VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club)

“VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club remains one of the best sports experiences VR has to offer. More than that however, it’s also one of the best social VR experiences currently available, with the tension of competition and the misery of defeat likely to help make new friends (and potentially enemies) across the VR community. VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club is a welcome foundation for sports simulations in VR, and with the FIFA franchise now surpassing 25 editions (not including the many spin-offs such as FIFA Street and FIFA World Cup), it’s a wonder to think exactly how much of VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club will remain in VR football 25 years from now.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club.

Football Nation VR Tournament 2018 is available for only £6.99 (GBP) right now on sale from £9.99 for PlayStation Plus members.

That is all for this week but remember that VRFocus gathers all the best sales and deals every week, so check back next weekend at the same time to discover more.
