Sony Confirms There Won’t be a PlayStation Experience This Year

Every year in December Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) holds its annual PlayStation Experience event in Anaheim, California, not only allowing gamers to test the latest videogames but also revealing new and upcoming titles. Well it now turns out that it won’t be taking place in 2018.

PlayStation VR Group shot

On the PlayStation Blogcast released today, Sony Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden confirmed the consumer focused event won’t be held for the first time in four years in the US.

Explaining why Layden said: “For 2018, I know this is going to be a disappointment for some people, but we’ve decided not to hold PlayStation Experience. We won’t have it in the States this year. The reasons behind that really are, we don’t have, we have a lot of progress that we’re making in our games [and] we’re seeing that coming out, now that we have Spider-Man out the door we’re looking into 2019 with games like Dreams and Days Gone but we wouldn’t have enough to bring people, all together in some location in North America to have that event. We don’t want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on it.”

That will certainly annoy fans who enjoy travelling to the event to see the very latest that SIE has to offer, whilst putting a worrying twist on the lack of third-party titles that tend to make an appearance. Could this be Sony starting an early wind down to refocus efforts on its next console. While the rumour mill has been rife about PlayStation 5, there’s been no concrete details from the company just yet.

And what about PlayStation VR? The headsets sales of 3 million may trifle in comparison to the PlayStation 4’s 82 million+ but its still proved more popular than PC rivals Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. And there’s always a constant influx of titles for the device, including a number of notable exclusives.

What ever the case, VRFocus will continue to bring you the latest PlayStation VR news and updates.

Sony Will Not Host A PlayStation Experience For 2018

Sony Will Not Host A PlayStation Experience For 2018

The rumors are true: there is no PlayStation Experience happening in 2018. Last year’s PlayStation Experience was down in Anaheim, CA in December and that was the first place that we were able to play games like WipEout VR and Firewall Zero Hour right after they were announced.

Sony made the announcement today on a recording of the 308th episode of PlayStation Blogcast. During the episode Shawn Layden, chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, made the announcement.

“For 2018, I know this is going to be a disappointment to some people, but we’ve decided not to hold a PlayStation Experience this year. We won’t have it in the States this year,” Layden said.

This is the first time since the event started in 2014. It had been held four years in a row up to this point. Next year, 2019, marks the 25th anniversary of the original PlayStation.

“Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we’re looking down in 2019 to games like ‘Dreams’ and ‘Days Gone’ but we wouldn’t have enough to bring people altogether in some location in North America to have that event,” Layden said.”We don’t want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on it. It was a hard decision, but we determined that this year we will not hold a PlayStation Experience.”

Basically it sounds like they don’t think they have enough confirmed games for 2019 that they can show off to warrant hosting an event.

Frankly, that doesn’t seem like it can be the real reason. He cites Dreams and Days Gone, but between other titles like The Last of Us II, Ghosts of Tsushima, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Death Stranding, and countless indie titles as well as PSVR titles there should be enough to show off. In fact, they could easily also show games that have just came out and/or are releasing at the end of this year.

I’m not in a position to verifiably say the reason for not having a PlayStation Experience, but the reason must be deeper than they don’t think they’ve got enough games to show since this is both a PSVR and PS4 non-VR event.

What do you think? Is it a budget concern? Let us know down in the comments below!

nDreams Release new Shooty Fruity Trailer for PlayStation Experience

Today the annual PlayStation Experience has begun in California, with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) showcasing the very latest content for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR. If you happen to live in the UK you may not have stayed awake until 4am to see the livestream – which VRFocus’ dedicated team just so happened to do. As part of the event British virtual reality (VR) developer nDreams has released a new trailer for its upcoming title Shooty Fruity.

In Shooty Fruity players are challenged to multitask by scanning, packing and serving all whilst keeping mutant fruit at bay.  So whilst turning pineapples, pomegranates, oranges and more into bullet ridden juice on the floor, there are numerous shifts to complete, including the newly revealed Canteen job role. New weapons can be purchased in the staff room, the game’s central hub where players can also customise and test their load out, including C4 launchers, flak cannon-style shotguns, revolvers, assault rifles and more.

While the video is purely for the PlayStation VR version of Shooty Fruity, when the title arrives on 19th December it will also support Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Pre-orders are available for €19.99 EUR/$19.99 USD/£15.99 GBP with early adopters getting free exclusive content, including the ‘Explody Bear’ grenade and the ‘Golden Guns’ skin pack for their arsenal.

VRFocus previewed an early version of Shooty Fruity, and caught up with Pat McGuigan, producer of Shooty Fruity at Gamescom 2017 to discuss the teams latest VR experience.

nDreams is the studio behind videogames such as Gunner for Gear VR, The Assembly for PlayStation VR, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift and Danger Goat for Google Daydream. It recently announced the launch of Danger Goat for Windows Mixed Reality headsets, further expanding Microsoft’s content lineup.

Wipeout VR Confirmed for PlayStation VR

The PlayStation Experience (PSX) officially begins tomorrow featuring the biggest selection of videogames from around the world, including virtual reality (VR) content. This evening Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has begun its livestream showcasing the latest titles coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro and of course PlayStation VR. For the head-mounted display (HMD) SIE has unveiled futuristic racer Wipeout VR.

Wipeout is the iconic racing title that first appeared on the original PlayStation – and one of the early titles attributed to its success – seeing several sequels over the preceding years. Now PlayStation VR owners will be able to dive into the high-speed anti-gravity vehicles and race at neck braking speeds down impossibly twisting, winding tracks.

Wipeout VR won’t be a standalone, dedicated VR experience, rather a VR option will be provided in a free update to Wipeout Omega Collection that’ll arrive at some point in 2018.

Announcing such a big title for PlayStation VR will be another boon for the popular headset, with the last few weeks seeing the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR and DOOM VFRThis past week also saw SIE release sales figures for the headset and PlayStation 4, with estimated sales figures showing that PlayStation VR cumulatively sold through more than 2 million units to consumers worldwide as of 3rd December, 2017.

Expect there to be plenty of titles being announced this weekend for PlayStation VR, as SIE has previously said there’s more than 130 videogames and other content currently in development for the headset, all due to be released by the end of 2018.

PSX 2017: What We Expect To See From Sony And PSVR

PSX 2017: What We Expect To See From Sony And PSVR

As the last major gaming event of the year, Sony’s annual PlayStation Experience is poised to kick off tomorrow down in Anaheim, CA. The opening PSX Conference starts tomorrow evening at 8PM PT and serves as a primer for things to come over the course of the weekend.

We’ll be there in person at PSX this weekend interviewing developers, playing demos of in-development PSVR titles, and getting a behind-the-scenes look at the future of Sony’s PSVR platform. Now, let’s dig into the details of what’s in store.

What We Already Know

We don’t know a whole lot about PSX at this point — it’s not as massive as a PAX, or E3, or GDC — so it’s most a waiting game to see what exactly will be playable at the show and what won’t be. However, we do have a few sure things that we can discuss.

First and foremost on Saturday morning there’s a mysterious panel that will include “a candid conversation between two legends as they discuss developing their new PS VR title and lessons from VR development.” During The Game Awards on Thursday it was revealed that this game is Accounting+, an expanded port of the HTC Vive title from Squanch Games and Crows Crows Crows.

Additionally, we know there will be a ton of demos for us to try out. A few that we’ve already got confirmed for hands-on time include Moss, Anamorphine, The Persistence, Gungrave, and several others, so stay tuned to UploadVR for lots of fresh hands-on previews over the next week.

One of the biggest games that we can hardly wait to learn more about though is Dreams, from Media Molecule. We’re not sure if the PSX demo this year is going to be playable, but it sounds like a VR version is still in the works, although it may not be ready at launch. Nevertheless, this is big news for the creative PSVR fans.

For the full list of PSVR games that should be playable at the show for the public, take a look:

  • Anamorphine
  • Bow to Blood
  • Bravo Team
  • Dark Eclipse
  • Farpoint
  • Golem
  • Gungrave
  • Knockout League
  • League of War: VR Arena
  • Medusa and Man
  • Moss
  • Resident Evil 7 biohazard
  • Shooty Fruity
  • Sprint Vector
  • The American Dream
  • The Inpatient
  • The Persistence
  • X Animal
  • Xing: The Land Beyond

In addition to these, we’re expecting some PSVR demos to only be available privately at the Media Arcade, which we’ll have full access to all weekend.

What We Expect

Now that we’ve got the sure things out of the way, we can start to speculate a little bit. Dreams will be at the show, but it probably won’t be showing off VR support this weekend. However, it’d be great to get a small tease again of what that might look like.

We’re also expecting at least one or two new game announcements, in addition to the big panel reveal on Saturday morning. Something from a major partner studio such as Insomniac (who are making Spider-Man for PS4 and just released three VR games for Rift in the past year) or even Naughty Dog (Uncharted, The Last of Us) would be huge.

Also, don’t be surprised if Sony touts the success and popularity of Skyrim VR, a game that seems to have really taken off in most VR gaming circles. I’d assume it’s doing much better than either Bethesda or Sony expected.

The Longshot Predictions

Now the real longshot prediction that has next to a zero percent chance of happening is that Sony and Bethesda would team up to announce an official PSVR version of Fallout 4 VR. They’ve done their fair share of hinting over the past year that they want to bring their games to “as many platforms as we can” so it’s only a matter of time before we finally get the chance to visit the Boston Wasteland.

Or, maybe we’ll get lucky and hear about plans for new and improved PS Move controllers with analog sticks built in, or a second PS Camera arrangement that would enable 360-degree tracking and roomscale interactions.

And if we’re really lucky maybe we’ll hear that Kojima is secretly working on a PSVR game that will be ready by the time the PSVR 2.0 is in the middle of its life cycle.

Don’t forget you can find more information about PSX 2017 right here, directly from Sony. Let us know what you think is going to happen and what you hope is going to happen this weekend at PSX 2017 down in the comments below!

Anamorphine Release Date Confirmed For 2018

It was back in March this year when we first heard about Anamorphine, a somewhat out of the ordinary narrative-driven videogame from developers. In Anamorphine the player takes an introspective trip through the world of someone who is suffering from mental illness. Taking on both their perceptions and their memories.

It is unusual in that unlike most videogames it has no spoken or written dialogue, nor is there any kind of traditional combat. Instead you literally step into the shoes of main character Tyler, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and experience what it is to be him. You must journey with Tyler through his memories unlocking clues from what you’re shown in order to understand what has happened to him in his troubled past.

Having previously been confirmed for a Winter release, Artifact 5 have now revealed that the title will be released on 16th January 2018. Artifact 5 also confirmed that it will be showing off the PlayStation VR version of the title as part of the line-up at next week’s PlayStation Experience event in Anaheim, California. An event VRFocus will be bringing you all the news from relating to virtual reality (VR).

The addition of PlayStation to the list of supported VR head mounted displays (HMDs) came a month ago, bringing the total number of confirmed headsets to three and placing it alongside both of the main PC HMDs – the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. The game is also due to come out for non-VR use on the PlayStation 4/ PlayStation 4 Pro, on PC and on the XBox One/XBox One X at a later date.

“Tyler’s mental illness begins to manifest itself when an accident leaves his wife Elena unable to play the cello―an activity that represents both her livelihood and emotional outlet.” Explains the developer, “Helpless as Elena slips into depression, Tyler returns again and again to the painful memories, his own mind against him. Told through pure environmental storytelling, Anamorphine eschews dialogue and UI in favour of uniquely surreal scenes and a breathtaking cello-focused soundtrack.”

VRFocus will be bringing you more videogame related VR news in the near future, be sure to check out the site throughout the weekend to keep right up to date.

Golem To Be Playable at PlayStation Experience 2017

There are many big events throughout the year that videogame fans pay close attention to, such as Gamescom, GDC and, of course, E3. PlayStation fans, however, have an event entirely dedicated to Sony’s box of tricks. This year it has been confirmed that PlayStation VR will be front and centre, including the much anticipated Golem.

More than 80 exhibitors have confirmed their attendance at the event, with some of the biggest and most recognisable names in the industry, such as Ubisoft, Capcom, Activision, Naughty Dog, Quantic Dream, Devolver Digital and Supermassive Games all listed as making an appearance.

Over fifteen PlayStation VR titles have also been confirmed as being showcased at the event, all of which will be available for attendees to play, including all of the following:

  • Anamorphine

  • Bow to Blood

  • Bravo Team

  • Dark Eclipse

  • Farpoint

  • Golem

  • Gungrave

  • Knockout League

  • League of War: VR Arena

  • Medusa and Man

  • Moss

  • Resident Evil 7 biohazard

  • Shooty Fruity

  • Sprint Vector

  • The American Dream

  • The Inpatient

  • The Persistence

  • X Animal

  • Xing: The Land Beyond

Golem is particularly notable, as developer Highwire Games has been working on the title for some time, tough few had seen much more than brief glimpses of it. Golem puts players in a fantasy world where they must take control of a stone creature in order to uncover old secrets and discover the reality behind the mysterious Endless City. As you journey, treasure can be found and artefacts uncovered, as well as enemies such as Silent Watch, a group of hostile golems.

Also on offer will be Moss, starring the adorable mouse adventurer Quill, who has stolen the hearts of videogame fans around the world since her first appearance at E3, and other upcoming titles such as Bow to Blood, The Inpatient and Xing: The Land Beyond.

The PlayStation Experience is due to take place in Anaheim, California from 9th-10th December, 2017. Tickets for the event are still available through the official website.

VRFocus will bring you further news on the PlayStation Experience as it becomes available.
