PSVR Game Of The Year 2021 Voting Open, Hitman 3, Doom 3 Nominated

The voting has opened for the PlayStation Blog’s 2021 Game of the Year awards, including the PSVR Game of the Year category.

The voting is open to anyone and covers several topics, with non-specific and VR-specific categories.

The most relevant category for our readers is, of course, PSVR Game of the Year. Here are this year’s nominees:

– BPM: Bullets Per Minute

Doom 3 VR Edition

–  Fracked

–  Hitman 3

–  I Expect You To Die 2

Maskmaker

Puzzle Bobble 3D Vacation Odyssey

Sniper Elite VR

Solaris Offworld Combat

Song in the Smoke

Synth Riders

Winds & Leaves

While there certainly wasn’t a lack of PSVR titles this year, it definitely feels like the platform is in a bit of a lull until PSVR 2 gets announced and developers start to show the games they’ve been working on for that new platform.

Of all the nominated titles listed above, the only ones we gave a ‘Great’ rating to were Hitman 3, I Expect You To Die 2, Sniper Elite (with some PSVR-specific caveats though), Solaris Offworld Combat and Song in the Smoke.

Beyond that dedicated category, there weren’t many games with VR support listed elsewhere. Hitman 3 was the only PSVR-supported game to appear in other categories, also nominated for Best Story, Best PS4 Game of the Year and Best PS5 Game of the Year. The studio behind the game, IO Interactive, was also nominated for Studio of the Year.

That being said, if you want to vote for a PSVR game that you feel deserves a nod in another category, you can do so via the ‘Other’ option for each poll.

Voting is open now on the PlayStation Blog and is available until December 13 at 11:59pm PT, with the winners set to be announced later this month.

No Man’s Sky Wins PlayStation’s Best PSVR Experience Of 2019

The PlayStation EU blog put out its Best of 2019 Awards post, naming the winners in various categories across the PlayStation range. No Man’s Sky took home first place for Best PS VR Experience of 2019, after the Beyond update earlier this year launched VR support on PlayStation and PC VR platforms.

The awards were voted on by fans over the period of a week, with nearly one million votes across all categories.

Clearly PlayStation players were enamored with No Man’s Sky VR update this year, voting it at first place in what the PlayStation blog called “something of an upset.” We’re not too sure what the folks over at Sony were expecting to take first place instead of No Man’s Sky, but Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown came in at second, LA Noire: The VR Case Files in third and Blood & Truth in fourth.

The honorable mentions category included Concrete Genie, Trover Saves the Universe and Everybody’s Golf VR.

No Man’s Sky is one of the games nominated for our own Best of 2019 awards as well. You can read David’s thoughts on the game’s nomination here, along with his reviews of the PSVR and PC VR versions of the game from earlier in the year. Blood & Truth is also one of our Best of 2019 nominees as well, but none of the other games from the PlayStation Awards list made our own list so far.

You can see the full list of categories, including non-PSVR awards, on the PlayStation EU Blog, and keep an eye out for end of the year awards.

New PlayStation VR US/Canada Bundle Details Announced

Virtual reality (VR) has never been more affordable or accessible. Mobile VR continues to develop as smartphone manufacturers and stakeholders such as Google and Samsung push the experience quality up. Thanks to work from Oculus collaborating with PC hardware manufacturers there’s been a continued push down of the minimum spec required to run VR and the cost of a minimum spec VR-Ready PC steadily lower. You also have the PlayStation 4 – a VR capable console many already own working to shape its own piece of VR real-estate.

Beyond this, this Summer specifically has seen a number of high profile cuts. First from Oculus, reducing the cost of an Oculus Rift to $399 and then a responding cut from HTC on the Vive. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) had though yet to get involved in the Summer push – at least when it comes to hardware.

Until now.

Newly announced on the PlayStation Blog, courtesy SIE’s Vice President Mary Yee, SIE have revealed a new PlayStation VR deal for the US and Canada aimed at providing “greater value”. The first, and what will be the new main bundle going forward, consisting of the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD), and the PlayStation Camera will cost $399 (USD) or $499 (CAD).

The second bundle for PlayStation VR Worlds meanwhile will be getting a price cut. The box, which contains the contents of the “core” box as well as the addition of a pair of PlayStation Move controller and the videogame PlayStation VR Worlds will now be $449 (USD) or $579 (CAD). The changes will come into effect as of September 1st, 2017.

Yee also acknowledged the problems some have had in acquiring the PlayStation VR Aim Controller, and confirmed that the Farpoint bundle including the gun peripheral was now back in stock. It is unclear at this time if any of these changes will be reflected in Europe or elsewhere. Should they be, VRFocus will bring you the details.

2D Platformer The Lost Bear Will Be Coming To PlayStation VR This Month

Hand-drawn 2D platform title The Lost Bear was announced last month by UK-based independent developer Oddbug Studio, who confirmed it would be heading for the PlayStation VR. Now the developer has confirmed the title will be launched on the console sometime in August, 2017.

The title’s Game director Daniel Robinson announced on the PlayStation Blog that The Lost Bear would be available on the PlayStation Store some time in the coming month. An exact date was not specified, nor was a price point.

The Lost Bear tells the story of a girl called Walnut, who sets out on a journey to rescue her lost teddy bear, overcoming obstacles and her own fears along the way. The style of a title was heavily inspired by puppet show theatre and features hand-drawn animation throughout.

Robinson said on the Blog post: “The project started at Norwich University of the Arts and ‘Dare to be Digital 2013’ where myself and two close friends wanted to accomplish a dream by creating our very own game. We were inspired both by Limbo and Eastern European puppet shows (our art director Harry is from the Czech Republic) and we teamed up with Fabrik Games to create and release The Lost Bear on PlayStation VR.”

The Blog post goes into details about the challenges faced during the development of The Lost Bear: “The VR mechanics of the game took a lot of time to get right,” Robinson explains, “We didn’t want Walnut to be aware of the player and we wanted to avoid any mechanics that did not fit the feel of the experience or break the flow of the game. During the prototyping phase we tried many gameplay iterations, and other gameplay prototypes. The decision was made that if they didn’t ground the player within the experience, or feel viable to coexist between 2D and 3D, then they wouldn’t make the cut.”

VRFocus will bring you further information about The Lost Bear as it becomes available.

Sony Confirms PlayStation VR Units Shipping to US Retail for Launch

This week might be the week of Oculus with their Oculus Connect event and Google who’s event relating to their Pixel phone as well as more information about Google Daydream head-mounted display (HMD) technology begins on October 4th but next week most definitely belongs to the PlayStation VR which sees it’s long awaited global release on October 13th.

PSVRUSLaunchDate_1

Demand has been high with pre-orders, initially opened back in March this year, selling though in numerous retailers. Sony announced additional stock for the Japanese market at its pre-TGS conference in September. But with Amazon this includes selling through additional phases of pre-orders too. With the retailer’s UK division recently confirming they may not be able to fulfil all pre-orders until December. For American PlayStation 4 users there is still hope if you have yet to secure a pre-order for a PlayStation VR – at least according to the PlayStation US Blog.

Included as part of an FAQ on everything PlayStation VR-related, Sony Interactive Entertainment America’s (SIEA’s) Director of Social Media Sid Shuman confirmed “In North America, PlayStation VR preorders opened in March and have sold out. But there will be units available at participating retailers nationwide on launch day, October 13, 2016.”

So it seems there may still be some stock, be it reserve stock or otherwise, still available. Be sure to check with your local store to see if they have any HMDs still available.

Driveclub Soundtrack Heads To Vinyl At the End of the Month

You may remember a little while back that various bits and pieces of merchandise was going to be launched for PlayStation VR title Rez Infinite, including a vinyl for its soundtrack. It has now been announced today that Driveclub will be following its footsteps with a vinyl of its soundtrack to launch at the end of the month.

It has come out via the PlayStation EU blog that the official vinyl soundtrack for Driveclub will be coming out on 30th September, and it will be a Collector’s Edition double red vinyl, too.

One of the main contributors to the soundtrack is UK-based electronic band Hybrid, who has also produced music for soundtracks on movies such as X-Men Origins and Fast & Furious Five, as well as games such as Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

In the blog post Hybrid were quoted: “We were thrilled to be asked to work on Driveclub. It was the opportunity to score the music you hear whilst driving the most incredible cars in the world. It was great working so closely with Sony and Evolution as the particular care and attention to detail that was demonstrated in making the game itself had to be equalled in the music and we love detail. Plus we got to write some pretty filthy drum & bass to boot which was huge amounts of fun! It was a fantastic experience.”

As well as Hybrid, other artists who were involved in the soundtrack include DJ Shadow, Photek, Clark, Noisia and Black Sun Empire. Amongst the excitement of the announcement, Duncan Smith, Sr Music Supervisor at PlayStation also gave PlayStation VR a mention: “It’s been great working on this soundtrack and the artists involved, seeing it first fire up the original PS4 game before Driveclub Bikes pushed the envelope even further. Now we get to complete the circle with a classic analogue vinyl release, just before the state-of-the-art audio on Driveclub VR hits the shelves!”

Batman: Arkham VR Devs Detail Gadgets and Scenes in Latest Video

Despite it being the week where EVE: Valkyrie is the highlight for PlayStation Blog Europe, it seems as though they couldn’t help themselves when it came to the release of this juicy behind the scenes video of Batman: Arkham VR, and we hear about a few more details than what we previously knew about the title.

The guys who were behind the main development at Rocksteady Studios feature in an in-depth video that may give you more of an idea as to what Batman: Arkham VR really is all about.

Bill Green, Acting Lead VR Designer, shared what kinds of equipment you will come across in the suiting up sequence and into the investigative tasks: “We were keen to bring in Batman’s gadgets with the gadget belt. We’ve got the old faithful bat claw that gets you round the environment. You get to take it off the belt, you aim, you shoot, and off you go. And then on the other side we came up with a new gadget, the Scanner gadget, that is effectively a detective mode for the VR world where you can use it like a torch and then Batman can piece together the evidence using the Scanner gadget.”
