Prepare for Active Shooters in the Workplace With Pixvana’s Latest VR Experience

Here in the UK, there are very strict gun laws prohibiting easy access to firearms. In the US, however, it’s another matter. Sadly, this means mass shootings are commonplace with schools and workplaces now conducting training so people know what to do in a crisis. Aiding in this endeavour is Pixvana, which has just launched a virtual reality (VR) training experience to prepare businesses for an active shooter in the workplace.

Called the Active Shooter Response training experience, the immersive video is a collaboration between Pixvana and Alexo, a company specialising in tactical training to counter workplace violence. Presenting the video is Alexo’s founder, Drew Hancock, a Seattle police officer and SWAT Supervisor, who teaches critical protocols including two simple acronyms, “OODA” (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) and “ABC” (Avoid, Barricade, or Combat).

“Virtual reality is extremely effective for teaching situational awareness and life-saving response for an active shooter scenario,” Hancock says in a statement.  “Learning response strategies is important, but actually simulating and experiencing different scenarios can increase comprehension and response time, which could be all the difference. VR provides employees with valuable practice that cannot be replicated in typical training. It’s a game-changing technology that can have a real impact for people in moments when it counts the most.”

Hancock takes viewers through important decision-making strategies whilst simulating life-saving tactics for employees. To further aid the learning process, interactive quizzes take place during and after the program, ensuring that employees are confident in their understanding of the curriculum.

Pixvana Shooter Awareness Training

“It’s unfortunate that this type of training is now necessary for every company, large and small, and for every employee near and far,” Hancock adds. “However, VR makes it simple for even the most disparate, global organizations to deploy this high-impact training at scale, anytime and anywhere.”

One of the first companies to trial the training programme in Vulcan Inc. a Seattle-based firm which oversees the philanthropic efforts of Microsoft’s late co-founder, Paul Allen. Pixvana claims that early results: “show a 32 percent overall increase in employee readiness for a live shooter event.”

Ultra-Luxury Cruise Line Seabourn Trains Waitstaff Using VR

Better known for its SPIN Studio for immersive video, today Pixvana has announced a new partnership with ultra-luxury cruise line Seabourn to provide a virtual reality (VR) training solution for its waitstaff.

Pixvana TableVision

Seabourn turned to VR and Pixvana due to a unique problem it had in training waiting staff on its ships. As the vessels are almost always at capacity and occupied by either customers or the cleaning crew, one of the biggest hurdles was training staff to be able to master the massive, 105 table, 12 serving station, dining room with limited to no access.

So Pixvana created and launched VR training solution TableVision. “We turned to the pros at Pixvana who handled everything from creative design to post-production and headset implementation,” said Rocky Sudlesky, the Seabourn Fleet Learning and Development Lead Specialist in a statement. “The end result is a completely tailored training experience that not only saves Seabourn Learning and Development time and money, but also provides staff with a more engaging, efficient, and accessible opportunity to learn.”

Using SPIN Studio, Pixvana executed a fast, 4-hour on-set shoot. Then during post-production over 300 assets were applied including branded, togglable graphic labels over the tables helping staff feel as though they were walking through the dining hall with the interactive elements further aiding memory recollection.

Pixvana Seabourn

“Pixvana is the only VR company in the world that offers clients access to both an award-winning creative services team and the power of a proprietary VR-native platform,” said Rachel Lanham, Chief Operating Officer of Pixvana.  “By creating tailored VR training experiences that leverage the VR superpowers – presence, empathy and immersion – we can maximize workforce engagement and retention.  We believe there’s huge potential for immersive learning in the corporate world and Seabourn’s dedication to unparalleled service puts them at the forefront of innovative training in the cruise industry.”

Once TableVision has been rolled out across each of Seabourn’s custom dining rooms, Pixvana will then work to complete more training experiences for Seabourn Learning and Development. As Pixvana announces further VRT training projects, VRFocus will keep you updated.

Pixvana’s SPIN Guide is a Next-Generation VR Presentation Tool for Enterprise Development

Pixvana’s cloud-based virtual reality (VR) platform SPIN Studio allows immersive content creators to build interactive story experiences from within a headset. This week, the company has announced an additional tool for the platform, SPIN Guide.

Pixvana SPIN Guide

SPIN Guide provides companies with a suite of presentation management tools as well as real-time analytics, helping guide audiences whilst tracking engagement and content comprehension. The new feature is ideal for VR uses cases where several guests may be taking a tour for example, with SPIN Guide one person can control what an entire audience is seeing from one main screen.

Alongside providing fully guided VR experiences, to ensure everyone has the same unified experience whoever is controlling the platform has the ability to talk to them throughout the journey; play, pause, and seek the video; adjust volume; and more.

“At Pixvana, we are dedicated to bringing new and powerful VR-native technology to market to help fuel the growth of the entire ecosystem,” said Beverly Vessella, VP of Product for Pixvana in a statement. “SPIN Guide is a trailblazing VR functionality that makes it effortless to lead entire groups of viewers on life changing adventures — guiding them, watching them respond, learning from them, and improving their experience along the way.  This is a game changer for everything from corporate trainings to sales enablement and marketing presentations.”

SPIN Guide can create heat maps of where users are looking, how they navigate the content, and how well they understand the content they consume, to provide valuable data for companies.

Cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technology company VMware has already begun using SPIN Studio. “VR has proven to be a powerful sales training tool for creating lasting impressions and increasing product recall and retention,” said Mimi Spier, Vice President of IoT at VMware. “Pixvana’s new SPIN Guide provides us with a whole new level of control, guidance, and insight into how effectively we are training our sales team. Now, we can better understand how our training material are being received and retained, plus we can use real-time analytics to optimize the experience on the fly.”

Pixvana and Limbix Aim to Combat Adolescent Depression Using VR

Pixvana is best known for its cloud-based virtual reality (VR) platform Spin Studio. Recently, the company announced a partnership with VR healthcare firm Limbix to create interactive immersive therapy for adolescent depression and anxiety.

Pixvana - VR Therapy

Through a collaboration between Pixvana, Limbix, Stony Brook, UT Austin, and Harvard researchers, they’re developing experiences that depict various situations that could lead to depression in adolescents. This, in turn, teaches teens how their brain functions and how thoughts and feelings develop, which will enable them to learn about controlling them as well as changing them for the better.

“The purpose of the project is not only to bring insight into depression – and let kids know they aren’t alone in their struggles – but also to teach kids how to process, confront and work through their feelings and challenges,” said Elise Ogle, Program Manager at Limbix in a statement. “Pixvana served as the perfect production partner, allowing us to focus on the lesson plan and research integration, while they ensured high-quality video and provided expert consultation.”

The VR project was filmed at Youngstown Arts and Cultural Center using a Google Jump camera, with each scene attempting to depict situations in a gender and age appropriate context so they can be shown in school classrooms. They will also be used by the professional therapist community.

Pixvana - VR Therapy scene

“The use of virtual reality as a medium can quickly put adolescents in familiar classroom settings, or immerse them in real-life scenarios, engaging them in a very meaningful, safe and lasting way,” said Rachel Lanham, Chief Operating Officer at Pixvana. “It’s an immersive and stimulating learning experience, and highly effective at communicating important messages and coping strategies. We hope this project can make a difference among teens by using technology to help break down stigmas that may exist about depression.”

VRFocus will continue its coverage relating to the latest VR therapy’s, reporting back with more announcements.

They’ll also be able to expedite processes, from camera upload to image editing, stitching, and distribution.

Using an Oculus Rift for example, users can combine media into interactive stories using Oculus Touch in a WYSIWYG interface. While in VR they’ll be able to sequence linear stories from their VR playlist, connect scenes in branching timelines, add interactive hotspots to guide the user’s gaze, incorporate hotspot actions, add graphic overlays and logos, and more.

“We are bringing to market the first complete set of cloud-based VR tools, with the capability of creating and editing in a virtual environment, making it easier than ever to build immersive VR experiences,” said Forest Key, Co-Founder and CEO of Pixvana. “With this release, we’ve completely reimagined the way people create interactive stories, and made it possible for them to unlock the real potential of VR media. Both expert and novice creators can now make VR video experiences and engage with audiences in more powerful ways – enlivening events, presentations, classrooms, tours and more.”

Pixvana SPIN Studio

As part of SPIN Studio Pixvana has launched its new stitcher, allowing creators to turn multiple video files into a story. The software renders masters at 8K+ resolution in the cloud.

“8K is the future. With it comes incredible benefits, but the sheer volume of data still poses challenges,” said Jason Paul, general manager of Gaming Software and Virtual Reality at NVIDIA. “With NVIDIA’s VRWorks 360 SDK, the SPIN Studio solution for rendering 8K in the cloud simplifies the workflow, making 8K more accessible to many content creators.”

Pixvana Open-Sources its VR Video Streaming SDK

Pixvana is a company focused on immersive media and XR storytelling by way of its SPIN Play platform. Today, it has  announced the open-sourcing of its software development kit (SDK) for third-parties to use.

Pixvana VRCasting image1

Pixvana’s SPIN Play SDK is an Apache 2.0 open-source-licensed library which can facilitate the addition of high-quality VR video playback, dynamic controls, and cross-platform VR support for developers to plug into their Unity applications. Cloud-based CMS supports advanced data flows for media companies and users can upload from existing cloud storage and export to custom or public endpoints.

“Application builders needed a drag-and-drop solution to add 360-degree and 180-degree VR video to their Unity based applications for Virtual, Augmented, or Mixed Reality apps,” said Beverly Vessella, Product Manager at Pixvana in a statement. “By opening up our valuable, cloud-based VR plug-in to the community, we hope to accelerate the adoption and innovation of VR and AR applications.”

The SPIN Play platform includes features like Field of View Adaptive Streaming (FOVAS) and VR-native playback projections. One of the newest additions to its feature set is an overlay option uses an Oculus Compositor Layer to deliver high-quality 60fps video for fully immersive 360 degree with monoscopic content.

Pixvana VRCasting image2

As for examples of Pixvana’s technology in action, earlier this year CNN used the SPIN Play SDK to deliver the CNNVR App for Oculus, giving users access to breaking news and original stories produced in a 360-degree format. Using the Pixvana SDK, the app met “fast startup” requirements, immediately delivering content tuned for high quality within seconds of a viewer selecting any CNNVR video.

“Pixvana partnered with our development team to customize the content pipeline and enable our editors in New York to get the highest quality content into the CNNVR app as quickly and as seamlessly as possible,” said Jason Farkas, Vice President at CNN.

Pixvana Creates New VR Video Playback Technology for SPIN Play

Pixvana, the company behind the SPIN Play platform has announced the launch of its new “overlay” virtual reality (VR) video playback technology to improve visual quality.

Pixvana VRCasting image2

Now available on the updated SPIN Play platform, the new version uses an Oculus Compositor Layer to deliver high-quality 60fps video for fully immersive 360 degree with monoscopic content. The technique works by bypassing the typical rendering path, and instead sending pixels directly to the display, effectively ray-tracing through the lens.

This means creators and producers can now upload their own content to SPIN Studio and stream it to Oculus Go at the highest quality possible.

“For years we’ve been focused – and pushing – on increased playback quality to help move the industry and VR adoption forward. Finally, audiences can now view immersive content in the sharpest, highest quality by either streaming or downloading it to the Oculus Go,” said Mike Swanson, Senior Architect at Pixvana in a statement. “Similar to John Carmack’s newly re-released version of ‘Henry’, you really have to put a headset on and experience these improvements first-hand, in order to appreciate the sharpness of the higher resolution. We are excited about these types of innovations and collaborations that continually advance the industry, making VR experiences more and more life-like to the viewer.”

Pixvana VRCasting image3

“This is a true breakthrough in the VR industry,” Swanson continued. “It’s analogous to when consumer audiences were first introduced to high-definition television and the entire viewing experience shifted forward. We’re opening up this enhanced experience and making it more broadly available to creators and audiences everywhere.”

In the near future Pixvana will also offer the video playback technology across Oculus devices in stereo.

Last month saw Pixvana announce a collaboration with camera rental agency Radiant Images, so whenever a company hires equipment it’ll gain free access to the SPIN platform. For any further updates from Pixvana, keep reading VRFocus.
