Drop Dead Dev Becomes Soul Assembly, Focuses Efforts on VR & Metaverse

Virtual reality (VR) shooters Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister and Drop Dead: Dual Strike Edition were the work of UK-based developer Pixel Toys, in an announcement today the XR team has been spun out to form Soul Assembly. This new studio will focus on VR and the metaverse, revealing that two projects are in the works.

Soul Assembly will be led by ex Codemasters and Jagex veteran David Solari, joined by David Osbourn (Codemasters and Activision) and Tony Williams (Codemasters and Take-Two Interactive) in executive positions. They’ll be focusing their efforts solely on VR has the industry continues to maintain momentum.

“With over 30 talented developers and two fantastic games we are thrilled to be one of the leading developers of VR and the metaverse,” said Solari in a statement. “Building on that momentum we have 2 further ambitious and exciting projects in development which we plan to launch before the end of the year.”

No further details were given as to what these projects could be but on the Soul Assembly website, there is a single spooky image of a house with “coming soon” across it. That image is titled “zombie cabin” which tends to suggest Soul Assembly is keeping with its undead heritage for another zombie-filled shooter.

As Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister and Drop Dead: Dual Strike Edition are both action-heavy VR experiences there’s a good chance this teased project may take a similar route. A 2022 launch window also means there shouldn’t be too long to wait to find out more.

Soul Assembly is also looking to grow its team with several job vacancies on its website. As details regarding the 2 new virtual reality projects surface, gmw3 will continue to keep you updated.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister Heads to PC VR in March

Pixel Toys released Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister as a Meta Quest platform exclusive back in 2020, where you could unleash your wrath against the forces of Chaos. As gmw3 reported back in January, the title was stencilled in for its Steam release on the 12th before being delayed. Today, the studio has confirmed that the PC VR edition of Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister will now arrive in March.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

The developer hasn’t said if the PC version will include any improvements such as upgraded graphics but from the new trailer (seen below) they certainly so seem of a higher quality than the Quest 2 videogame. However, Pixel Toys has confirmed that the Steam version will include all the content updates the Quest title has received including Last Bastion, the co-op multiplayer mode.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister is a non-stop action-adventure where you play the role of Sister Ophelia, a veteran Sister of Battle who is searching for her long lost twin sister whilst fighting to save all of humanity. As Ophelia you have access to a brutal assortment of weapons, being able to switch between close quarters and long-range combat.

Staying completely faithful to the Warhammer universe and its lore, you can choose from Bolters, Plasma Pistols, Flamers, Las Rifles, Power Swords and Chainswords to cut down heretics and Chaos Space Marines. Additionally, you also have access to special abilities to aid each encounter, creating protective force fields or slowing time.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

Gmw3 reviewed Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister saying: “Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister has some great set piece moments, and the general gameplay is enjoyable throughout. Its action all the way, so there’s not much depth to the experience and no secrets to uncover. Just grab a gun and start blasting, which is no bad thing.”

The Steam version of Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister will launch on 8th March 2022 for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets; priced at £14.99 GBP/ $19.99 USD. For further updates keep reading gmw3.

Deadly Defense Horde Mode now Available for Drop Dead: Dual Strike

Drop Dead - Deadly Defense

Zombie videogames and horde modes seem to go hand in hand with each other, which Pixel Toy’s series Drop Dead knows all too well. Today, the studio has announced an expansion to Drop Dead: Dual Strike‘s horde mode offerings with Deadly Defense, challenging players with more undead delights.

Drop Dead - Deadly Defense

In Deadly Defense all players have to do is defend a deployed repeater from all those zombie hordes. Just like any horde mode, you need to survive as long as possible with the added bonus should you reach round 30, the repeater will successfully locate the infamous Dr Monday’s secret lair and thus complete their mission.

Becoming a popular zombie shooter for Oculus Quest since its release in 2019, Drop Dead: Dual Strike Edition offers a more colourful, comic-style take on zombie-slaying but is no less intense for it. Just like the other horde modes, Deadly Defense supports co-op multiplayer and of course, the dual-wielding Dual Strike is known for.

Pixel Toys actually began the VR Drop Dead series in 2016 with a far more basic Gear VR edition, followed by an Oculus Rift version in 2017. It wasn’t until the launch of Drop Dead: Dual Strike Edition that the series got its major interactive makeover, allowing players to pick and choose their arsenal; whether they fancied a classic two shotgun combination or throwing in a melee weapon for fun.

Drop Dead - Deadly Defense

While Pixel Toys is still supporting its comedic zombie shooter, most recently the studio is better known for affiliation with the Warhammer franchise. Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister arrived in 2020 for Oculus Quest putting players in the shoes of Sister Ophelia, part of the Sisters of Battle. And just like Drop Dead: Dual Strike Edition, Pixel Toys added a horde mode to Battle Sister, fighting waves of demons, cultists, Chaos Space Marines and more.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Pixel Toys, reporting back with further updates.

Competition: Win Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister for Oculus Quest

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

Last month’s Oculus Gaming Showcase had an assortment of updates for current titles including Pixel Toys’ action-packed Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister. If you’ve not stepped into this sci-fi world of total war then now’s your chance as VRFocus has several codes for this Oculus Quest exclusive to giveaway.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

Rather than a Space Marine, Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister puts you in the shoes of Sister Ophelia, one of the deadly Sisters of Battle. Hoping to find her long-lost twin sister whilst fighting the hordes of chaos you battle corrupt Chaos Space Marines, Daemons, Heretics, and other abominations. As you’d expect from a Warhammer 40k title you’re well equipped for the task with Bolters, Plasma Pistols, Flamers, Las Rifles, Power Swords, and Chainswords to hand. Plus, you’ll have magical Acts of Faith abilities allowing you to push back enemies and objects, create a force field, or slow time.

In addition to the core single-player campaign Pixel Toys has introduced a Horde Mode so players can battle wave after wave of monsters. The recent update added a multiplayer component so that you and a friend can team up and try to survive. To aid your chances every kill earns you resources that can be used to purchase weapons and ammunition.

Reviewing Warhammer 40,000 Battle Sister at launch VRFocus said: “Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister has some great set piece moments, and the general gameplay is enjoyable throughout. It’s action all the way, so there’s not much depth to the experience and no secrets to uncover. Just grab a gun and start blasting, which is no bad thing.”

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister Adds Multiplayer Horde Mode

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

Pixel Toys’ Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister was one of several virtual reality (VR) titles to arrive for Oculus Quest in time for Christmas 2020, enabling Warhammer fans to step into the war-torn universe and battle the forces of Chaos. Today, as part of the Oculus Gaming Showcase, Pixel Toys has announced the launch of its next major update, adding a co-op horde mode.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

The Last Bastion horde mode launched last month with one map and only playable solo. With the free multiplayer update you and a mate can team up and fight hordes of demons, cultists, Chaos Space Marines and more, surviving against ever greater numbers as the waves progress. To aid your chances every kill earns you resources that can be used to purchase weapons and ammunition. These weapons include classics fans should already be well acquainted with like Bolters, Plasma pistols, Lasguns, Grenade launchers, Grenades, Flamers, Chainswords and Melta guns.

“We’re thrilled to be adding the Last Bastion game mode, delivering a fast and furious co-op experience, that brings players together,” says James Horn, Project Co-Director at Pixel Toys in a statement. “The team have done a huge amount of work supporting players since launch and we look forward to providing even more fantastic content going forward.”

The launch of Last Bastion will feature three maps for you play with more already in development. Pixel Toys says the next batch will arrive in a June update for Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

“What better way fight of the forces of Chaos, that to bring a friend! We are very proud to be able to bring nonstopaction co-op gameplay to the Last Bastion Horde mode in Warhammer 40,000 Battle Sister,” James Horn, Project Co-Director at Pixel Toys adds.

VRFocus reviewed Warhammer 40,000 Battle Sister saying: “Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister has some great set piece moments, and the general gameplay is enjoyable throughout. Its action all the way, so there’s not much depth to the experience and no secrets to uncover. Just grab a gun and start blasting, which is no bad thing.”

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister is available for Oculus Quest/Quest 2 priced at £22.99 GBP. Check out the new trailer below and for further updates keep reading VRFocus.

Warhammer 40,000 VR FPS Coming To Oculus Quest And Rift Platforms Later This Year

Announced at Facebook Connect, Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister is an upcoming single player first-person shooter for VR. It will be available for Oculus Quest, Oculus Quest 2 and Oculus Rift later this year.

warhammer 40,000 vr game oculus quest 2

The game is set in the universe of Warhammer 40,000, one of the most popular miniature tabletop war games, which has since spun off into a few related video games. You’ll play a veteran Sister of Battle called Sister Orphelia in a campaign where she “searches for her lost twin sister and fights for the future of humanity itself.” Here’s a description of the weapons and gameplay mechanics you’ll have access to:

Battle Sister features a range of iconic wargear from the Warhammer 40,000 universe for players to actually wield, for the first time, in their own hands, legendary weapons including Bolters, Plasma Pistols, Flamers, Las Rifles, Power Swords and Chainswords. As well as these devastating weapons the player has access to Acts of Faith. These powerful abilities can turn the tide of battle by allowing players to slow time, create a resilient force field, and push back enemies and objects.

The game is being developed by Pixel Toys, the studio that previously developed Oculus Quest launch title Drop Dead: Dual Strike. Not only does the studio have experience developing for VR, but they’ve also worked with the Warhammer 40,000 IP before, developing mobile games like Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade.

There’s no word on pricing or a specific release date for Battle Sister just yet, except that it will launch before the end of the year for Rift and Quest platforms.

At Facebook Connect today a new VR shooter was announced that takes place in the long and storied universe of Warhammer 40,000.

The game, called Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister, is slated to launch on Rift and Quest at some point later this year. The developers Pixel Toys say the narrative-driven shooter will offer both single and multiplayer modes.

In Battle Sister, players don the power armor and wargear of Sister Ophelia, a veteran Sister of Battle. The studio says players will battle through “an epic story where Ophelia searches for her lost twin sister and fights for the future of humanity itself.”

“The immersive experience that VR provides allows fans and new initiates alike to the Warhammer universe alike to experience brutal action gameplay across the majestic and grim expanses of the Warhammer 40,000 universe,” Pixel Toys say.

Battle Sister is said to include iconic wargear such as Bolters, Plasma Pistols, Flamers, Las Rifles, Power Swords, and Chainswords. Powerful abilities, such as Acts of Faith, will let players do things like slow time, create a force field, and push back enemies and objects.

Pixel Toys is also known for its work on flatscreen titles Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade, Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realm War, Gunfinger, and VR game franchise Drop Dead.
