Pico Neo 3 Link Releases for €450 in Europe with Hopes of Competing with Quest 2

Pico Interactive primarily targets enterprise users outside of China, however now the company has taken a significant step into European consumer market, as it’s officially launched its new Neo 3 variant there, Pico Neo 3 Link, which features both standalone and PC-tethered capability.

Update (May 25th, 2022): Pico announced the news in a tweet yesterday, seen below:

The headset is selling in Europe for €450, however the Neo 3 Link order page also indicates the device can be pre-ordered for shipment to the US, priced at $415, as well as other countries outside of Europe. We’ve reached out to Pico to see whether this pricing and availability is official, and will update here soon.

The original article follows below:

Original Article (April 13th, 2022): Called Neo 3 Link, the headset is aiming to straddle the PC VR and standalone headset segments by offering built-in PC streaming over either Wi-Fi 6, or tethered DisplayPort connection. It’s ostensibly the same hardware as the Pico Neo 3 Pro, albeit targeted at consumers.

For now, the company is pitching the headset as a kind of consumer beta, asking early adopters in Europe to help them improve the Pico Store, payment system, social… everything a company needs to compete with Meta in the realm of consumer standalone VR.

Pico says it’s launching pre-orders for Neo 3 Link starting April 15th in a number of European countries—coming first to Germany, France, Spain and the Netherlands, priced at €450. Pre-orders end May 23rd.

Neo 3 Link is also coming to the UK starting in June at £400, with other European markets added at monthly intervals. That’s exact price parity with an equally equipped Meta Quest 2—not counting the ‘Elite’ style strap that Quest users have to buy extra.

“In Asia, Pico is already the leading provider of consumer VR headsets in China and will bring the beta program to new markets such as Japan and Korea. Pico will target VR fans and gamers with its new Link headset; users will participate in a unique beta program where feedback informs future product development,” Pico says in a press statement.

In addition to being able to play SteamVR titles over Wi-Fi 6 or tethered DisplayPort, the company says its native standalone Pico Store features over 200 VR apps such as SUPERHOT VR, Puzzling Places, After the Fall, Walkabout Mini Golf, Elven Table Tennis, and Demeo.

Pico Announces Neo 3 Pro, Neo 3 Pro Eye For Enterprise Market

Pico Interactive announced two new headsets this week — the Pico Neo 3 Pro and the Pico Neo 3 Pro Eye, both aimed at an enterprise market and available soon in North America and Europe.

The two new headsets follow from the launch of the standard consumer-focused Pico Neo 3 headset last month, which is available exclusively in China. Pico promised that headsets aimed at an enterprise market would follow, and the Neo 3 Pro and Neo 3 Pro Eye are just that.

The Pico Neo 3 Pro

Like the Neo 3, they are both powered by the Snapdragon XR2 platform and now feature optical 6DoF controller tracking, as opposed to the electromagnetic controller seen in the Neo 2 Pro and Neo 2 Pro Eye. Both headsets feature a single 5.5″ display, with a resolution of 3664 x 1920 and a 90Hz refresh rate. The field of view (FOV) on both headsets is ever so slightly lower than the last generation, down to 98 from 101 in the Neo 2 headsets. However, while the Neo 2 generation had a fixed IPD, the Neo 3 Pro and Neo 3 Pro Eye offer adjustable IPD settings at 58mm, 63.5mm and 69mm.

Just like the standard Neo 3 model, both the Pro and the Pro Eye feature upgraded WiFi 6 capabilities, along with improved guardian support thanks to the increase to 4 cameras from only 2 last generation. The Neo 2 headsets only supported a 3x3m guardian, but the Neo 3 Pro and Pro Eye now support a 10x10m space.

Continuing the partnership from the Neo 2 generation, the Neo 3 Pro Eye will feature built-in eye-tracking capabilities from Tobii.

Both headsets offer DisplayPort and NVIDIA’s Direct Mode support, which promises streaming of PC VR content at 4K 90Hz via Pico VR Streaming when connected to a VR-ready computer via DisplayPort.

In terms of pricing, the Neo 3 Pro sits at $699 USD and the Neo 3 Pro Eye at $899 USD. Both headsets will be available to pre-order soon for enterprise customers on the Pico Interactive website.

Pico Neo 3 Includes Snapdragon XR2, Optical Controllers And Physical IPD Adjustment

Pico Interactive revealed the specifications for its Neo 3 headset and it is looking a lot like Oculus Quest 2 minus Facebook.

However, the headset is being pitched only to consumers in Asia.

The new headset is pitched as running the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform with a switch to optical controller tracking. The earlier Pico Neo 2 featured electromagnetic tracking that worked to accurately track controller position even when it was held behind your back. Optical tracking, meanwhile, is the type of tracking used on Oculus Quest 2 which loses tracking sometimes when held in unusual positions outside the view of the cameras. Pico Neo 3 also includes WiFi 6, according to the company. Pico says it will offer an enterprise version of the device in late summer 2021 that will be targeted toward professional markets outside Asia.

Pico Neo 3 includes four wide-angle cameras with a “curved screen” and 90hz visuals, according to the company, along with three settings for the distance between your eyes. The back of the headset includes a counterbalance for increased comfort. There’s a handful of apps for Oculus Quest that have made the jump to Pico’s platform. That was before Facebook started requiring your real identity used in associated with its headsets, however, and we’re curious to see if this updated Neo 3 convinces any developers to bring their products over to a competing headset with similar specifications. Pico recently announced a publishing effort to help developers release content on the company’s headsets in Asia.

We’re expecting new hardware reveals from HTC in May and next week Facebook is hosting an event related to new games on its platform.

Pico Neo 3 startet am 10. Mai in China

Tower Tag Lockdown Sale 3

Pico Interactive hat heute mit der Pico Neo 3 eine neue Version der autarken VR-Brille vorgestellt, welche bereits am 10. Mai in China starten soll.

Pico Neo 3 startet am 10. Mai in China

Pico Neo 3 Specs Revealed: Snapdragon XR2, Physical IPD Adjustments & More

Pico Interactive announced last week that Neo 3, the Beijing-based company’s next standalone VR headset, is slated to arrive to consumers in Asia starting May 10th, 2021, and to enterprise in the West sometime this summer. We had only seen a single partial rendering of Pico Neo 3, however now the company has revealed more of the headset alongside revealing a few basic specs.

Update (April 13th, 2021): Pico today released more info on its upcoming Neo 3 standalone. There’s only a short spec sheet for now. Today’s news also came with a new image of the headset, which we’ve included above.

Pico Neo 3 will include:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset
  • WiFi 6 antenna
  • optical controllers with embedded tracking sensors
  • three physical IPD adjustments
  • four wide-angle cameras providing “millimeter-level” positioning and tracking
  • curved screen clocked at 90Hz refresh

Notably, the Snapdragon XR2 is the same chipset inside Oculus Quest 2. The company says its enterprise version for outside of Asia is slated to release sometime in summer 2021. The original article follows below:

Original Article (April 7th, 2021):The company released the news via its official Weibo account early yesterday, stating that the headset will be launched at a special event taking place on May 10th at the Beijing National Aquatics Center, also known as ‘Water Cube’.

As reported by Chinese VR publication Yivian, the headset appears to have four optical sensors and a new Oculus Touch-like controller.

There’s essentially nothing else to go on besides the rendering above, however Pico is making definite strides to appeal to consumers in Asia with the launch of its next standalone headset.

In late March, the company announced its was opening its own publishing division, called Pico Studios. The company says it will be partnering with global developers to bring its 6DOF VR apps and games to consumers in Asia. The company has already stocked its Pico Store with around 400 apps, which include a number of fan favorites localized for Chinese consumption such as Superhot VR, Apex ConstructAngry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, and Racket: Nx.

As for the West, Pico is still focusing on serving enterprise clients and B2B with Neo 3, which makes sense since there are very few companies up to the task of undercutting the successful Oculus Quest platform vis-à-vis Facebook.

It’s important to note that China-based consumers can’t purchase Oculus devices as Facebook is banned in that country, which makes for an interesting state of affairs. Pico Interactive has been armed with a fresh B and B+ funding round though, amounting to around $67M, so there’s no telling what inroads Pico will make outside of Asia in the future.

Firefox Reality 10 Brings Enhanced Web Browsing With WebXR, Gaze Navigation & Security

Firefox Reality

The internet is an intrinsic part of our everyday lives and championing this is the virtual reality (VR) space is Mozilla with Firefox Reality. This week the company has released Firefox Reality 10, adding new features to expand and improve the experience for users.

Firefox Reality

The big update for Firefox Reality 10 is support for WebXR. Originally planned for 2019, the rollout this week aids improvements in cross-device functionality so that websites can work with a variety of controllers without the need to write individual support. The browser will still work with WebVR – the previous version – as most web content which is VR compatible is WebVR content.

“This will help our partners and developer community gracefully transition to WebXR without worrying that their audiences will lose functionality immediately. We will eventually deprecate WebVR. We’re currently working on a timeline for removing WebVR support,” notes the Mozilla Blog.

A useful feature the general public will notice is the addition of gaze navigation support in Firefox Reality 10. This allows you to control various browser functions without the need of a controller, useful for those who can’t use a controller. Scrolling, selecting and typing are all possible if your controller suddenly stops working.

Firefox Reality

Smaller improvements include dual-controller typing for those you prefer to use both hands, download management options; better privacy and security when online and DRM video playback.

For the launch of Firefox Reality 10 Mozilla has also announced a partnership with Pico Interactive. The browser will come supplied with all Pico headsets including its new Pico Neo 2 standalone headset. Firefox Reality already supports headsets such as Oculus Quest, Oculus Go and HTC Vive, with Pico now added to that list. The Neo 2 and Neo 2 Eye are Pico’s latest enterprise-focused headsets with 4K resolutions, inside-out tracking and 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) controllers.

Last month saw the company release Hubs Cloud for Amazon Web Services (AWS). Currently, in Early Access, organisations can build private or public social spaces for a range of use cases such as connecting with clients or teamwork, all through their AWS account.

As Mozilla continues to update Firefox Reality, VRFocus will keep you updated.

Social VR App eyeora Launches With ViRtual AID 2020 Campaign

Eyeora

As the current coronavirus pandemic continues, so in turn the lockdown measures, everyone is trying new ways of connecting online, whether that’s through video calls or more immersive solutions. When it comes to virtual reality (VR) the latest is a social network called eyeora, a place which you can make your own or commercialise if you so wish.

Eyeora

Like any social app eyeora wants to provide a place where people can connect, whether that’s family and friends or those that wish to share their interests with the world.

The platform allows you to create a VR room using the eyeora VR Studio application. Designed to be user friendly with drag and drop mechanics, the tool enables you to create 360-degree scenes with gaze controlled locations to move to. While the average user can create their own little home away from home, eyeora’s function set allows for a wide range of uses cases, from virtual events to company-branded rooms both private and public.

Hence why the social network has also launched its ViRtual AID 2020 campaign in a bid to help the Covid-19 effort. In a bid to encourage everyone to connect and work together the campaign is looking for partners, raising funds by holding events which people can buy into. The first being Rockin 1000, an exclusive rock concert.

Eyeora

Eyeora is entirely free to start using and exploring, with the free plan allowing you to build one room for social and private events, adding in YouTube and other content. The application really expands when you move to the £5 GBP per month plan which unlocks all the features of VR Studio, the ability to create three rooms and the option to monetise, either charging for entry or pay per view (PPV) events.

Currently available via iOS and Android apps usable with compatible smartphone headsets as well as standalone headsets like Pico Neo, eyeora will soon be expanding support to Oculus Quest/Rift and HTC Vive.

The company has confirmed to VRFocus that there are plenty of features planned in the upcoming months. As and when they are confirmed, VRFocus will let you know.
