Vuzix Announces Partnership With OnCore Golf To Bring AR Experiences To Golf Players

Vuzix Corporation, known for their Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses, have announced that they are partnering with OnCore Golf to deliver new AR enhanced experiences for golfers on the Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses.

The two companies will team up to create AR instructional, entertainment, and educational programs that golfers of all skill levels can enjoy at any venue – including driving rangers, golf entertainment centers, on the golf course, and at home – all center around the Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses. The two companies are planning to introduce their first AR golf experience in early 2019 and will leverage third-part ball launch system at driving ranges and practice facilities.

By mid-2019, OnCore expects to launch its smart GENiUS ball and offer it with the Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses to allow for real-time AR tracking and analysis for golfers to use in actual course play. The system will include a range of features such as instructional and caddying advice using a network of both professional golf instructors and artificial intelligence (AI), along with GPS location and sensor technology. “We are excited to enter into this partnership with OnCore Golf and believe it can create an entirely new form of entertainment and training experiences for golfers of all skill levels,” said Paul Travers, President and Chief Executive Officer at Vuzix talking about the new partnership: “Bringing Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses to the golf courses, golf entertainment centers and driving ranges gives us an opportunity to connect with more than 25 million active golf participants that play on more than 15,000 golf courses across the USA.”

“Coupled with an appropriate golf ball launch system, wearers can see their flight statistics in real time. Connecting the digital world to the real world through the Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses allows wearers to keep their phone in their pocket and eye on the ball while offering an opportunity to improve their golf handicap or just simply have a lot fun while trying.”

This Week in VR Sport: Formula E Driving Experience, PGA Tour Expands Coverage and 360 Video at Singapore F1 Grand Prix

It may be a busy week for videogame events, with the Tokyo Games Show (TGS) 2017 going on in Japan, the VRDC expo taking place in California and EGX 2017 being held in Birmingham, UK, but that doesn’t mean to say VRFocus’ weekly roundup of news relating to sport and virtual reality (VR) has gone wanting. This week features Red Bull and Virtually Live with a Formula E driving experience, 360-degree coverage being tested at the recent Singapore F1, and if you missed it, the PGA Tour and Intel will be expanding their immersive coverage of golf.

Virtually Live Launches Formula E VR Driving Experience at Red Bull Media World

If you’re heading to Red Bull Media World at the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz, Luzern, anytime soon then you’ll be able to check out a new VR experience by Virtually Live which place guests in the drivers seat of a Formula E race car.

The company has partnered with the FIA Formula E Championship to recreate races in VR using last Season’s Paris ePrix race track, allowing them to compete over 2 laps to beat Renault eDams driver Sébastien Buemi’s fastest time.

“We are delighted to collaborate with Red Bull Media World to provide visitors to the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz with a cutting edge VR driving experience, showcasing our relationship with Formula E,” said Oliver Weingarten, Director of Motorsport at Virtually Live in a statement. “Virtually Live has been recreating Formula E ePrixs live in immersive VR by ingesting the live telemetry from the drivers’ cars. This has enabled us to give fans a unique opportunity to compete in VR against Sébastien Buemi’s fastest lap at last Season’s Paris ePrix. We look forward to seeing who comes out on top early next year.”

“The level of detail and realism in the “Virtually Live Driving Experience” is incredible,” commented Sébastien Buemi. “This is a really innovative experience, which allows me to engage with my fans, at the same time as giving them the experience of driving my Formula E car in VR around the Paris ePrix track.“

The driving experience will be available until 31st January 2017. For those unable to attend download the Virtually Live Formula E VR App, and experience Season 3 ePrixs in VR with complete freedom of movement, where you can go anywhere on the track during the ePrixs; including the perspective from inside any driver’s car, but also have the chance to drive and set your own lap time.

Tata Communications Trials Live 360 Video at the Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Last weekend the 2017 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix took place with Tata Communications and Formula 1 trialling a live 360-degree video feed and TV broadcast in complete sync.

It’s quite common for there to be a 30-second delay between the 360-degree video and live TV feeds which in a fast paced sport like F1 can mean all the difference.

Tata placed two 360 cameras at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore, one trackside and one in the paddock. Via the Official F1 App fans could use their tablet to access a live 360º video feed from the paddock and see the biggest names in the sport. Or, during a race, as a driver pulls into the pits for a tyre change, fans could complement the action on TV with a 360º view of everything that is happening in the pit lane in real-time.

“We’ve done this test to show how a fan could watch Lewis, Sebastian or any other drivers coming into the pits on TV, grab their tablet and get a second, completely in sync 360º view of everything going on around him while he is there – not 30 seconds after he has driven off!,” said John Morrison, Chief Technical Officer, Formula 1. “In a sport like F1 where every millisecond matters, there are huge opportunities to empower fans to take control of key Grand Prix moments and create their unique, personalised race experiences through the powerful combination of live TV and 360º video.”

“This proof of concept shows the potential of live 360º video to augment the F1 TV viewing experience and bring VR mainstream in live sports and entertainment,” said Mehul Kapadia, Managing Director of Tata Communications’ F1 Business. “Eliminating the delay in 360º video means that, for the first time, it’s possible to offer fans truly live 360º video experiences on a global scale. This will enable sports and entertainment organisations to engage with their audiences in new ways and generate new revenue streams – helping the 360º video and VR market achieve its USD $60 billion potential.”

PGA TOUR And Intel Expand Immersive Golf Coverage

And just in case you missed VRFocus’ coverage earlier this week, the PGA Tour and Intel are continuing thier partnership by bring golf fans more immersive coverage over 2017/18.

The expansion will see six PGA Tour events being broadcast in 360-degrees, beginning with the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta this month, followed by the Presidents Cup at Liberty National Golf Club from 28th Sept. – 1st October, then the Waste Management Phoenix Open and THE PLAYERS, both in 2018.

All the action can be viewed through the PGA TOUR VR Live app available for free on Samsung Gear VR. If you happen to miss the live broadcast the content will also be available on demand following each event. Live and on-demand VR and 360 video coverage of the TOUR Championship will showcase holes 1, 15 and 18, beginning 21st September 2017.

PGA TOUR and Intel Expand Immersive Golf Coverage

Back in May the PGA Tour announced a collaboration with Intel to provide coverage of The Players Championship. The they’ve revealed an expansion of that partnership to provide live virtual reality (VR) and live 360-degree video at six PGA TOUR events in 2017 and 2018, beginning with the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta this month.

Using Intel’s True VR technology, the company will provide access to areas on the course that guests on site can’t access. Aside from the East Lake Golf Club championship the other events so far confirmed are the Presidents Cup at Liberty National Golf Club from 28th Sept. – 1st Oct., the Waste Management Phoenix Open and THE PLAYERS, both in 2018.

“After two years of experimenting with virtual reality on the PGA TOUR, we are very excited by the viewer experience that Intel produces,” said PGA TOUR Chief Media Officer Rick Anderson in a statement. “From the TOUR’s perspective, our goal with VR is to create an experience that is completely different than what you can get as a fan at our events or by viewers of our traditional media platforms. We are confident that Intel’s True VR technology allows us to achieve this goal. The exclusive partnership with Intel furthers our mission of creating a total fan experience that showcases our product on a global stage.”

The events will be viewable through the PGA TOUR VR Live app available for free on Samsung Gear VR. If you happen to miss the live broadcast the content will also be available on demand following each event. Live and on-demand VR and 360 video coverage of the TOUR Championship will showcase holes 1, 15 and 18, beginning 21st September.

“We’re thrilled to be continuing and expanding our work with the PGA TOUR into a broader VR partnership,” said James Carwana, general manager of Intel Sports. “Intel True VR was there to capture an historic hole-in-one from the iconic 17th green at THE PLAYERS Championship earlier this year, and we look forward to the amazing experiences we will bring to golf fans next.”

This Week in VR Sport: The Diamondbacks Make Move To Take You Out To The Ballgame

With VRFocus the weekend guarantees two things, and the first of those is Saturday’s weekly roundup of stories combining the fields of virtual reality (VR) and sport. There’s a trio of very different stories this week, so let’s get on with things and take you through them. Starting with a story we’ve not yet covered this week in the realm of baseball.

Fans Get To Live The Dream Thanks To The Arizona Diamondbacks

On our weekend features we’ve often followed VR’s fortunes in American Football and Basketball, both for professionals and at the college level. One American institution we rarely get the chance to talk about is ‘The National Passtime’ itself: the sport of baseball.

National League West franchise the Arizona Diamondbacks have joined the Boston Red Socks and turned to VR in order to let them discover just what it feels like to pull on a Diamondbacks shirt with a behind-the-scenes look at what it means to be a player on the team. As part of a new ‘VR Bullpen’ at the Chase Field stadium fans will be able to try out an discover an array  where they can strap on an HTC Vive and experience among other things stepping into an actual bullpen (where the area where relief pitchers warm up), stepping out onto the turn to field fly balls, running the bases and even the anticipation of waiting for their chance to play in the dugout. Screens will also be up showing around the area just what the fans inside VR are up to. Take up is already strong with an average of 350 fans trying the experience per game.

Speaking to Cronkite News, the Diamondbacks Vice President relating to fan experiences Graham Rossini had this to say: “Our goal with Cox Connects VR Bullpen is to really bring fans as close to the action as possible. So with the headset, we basically put them in the middle of major league workouts [to experience] what it’s like to be in the batter’s box facing great pitching, what it’s like to be fielding ground balls, fly balls, etc. Only a few people get a chance to say they were a Major League Baseball player so when you do get to stand in the batter’s box and get to understand how good Taijuan Walker [the Diamondbacks’ pitcher] is, how fast those pitches are coming in, the movement of a breaking ball, it’s a really cool perspective.”

PGA Tour Makes Move To Be Broadcast In 360 Degrees

Golfing fans keen on VR also have cause tocelebrate after it was confirmed by the PGA Tour that the 17th hole of The Players Championship will be broadcast live in 360-degree video thanks to a collaboration between the PGA and technology giant Intel.

The championship, which will be played from May 11th to May 14th 2017 will be viewable either via the PGA Tour VR Live app, to be made available on the Oculus Store for the Samsung Gear VR or as a stream viewable on the PGA Tour twitter account.account.

It marks the first move into VR for the PGA which will see three 360 degree cameras from Intel broadcast footage from the tee, walkwat up to the tee, and  will be placed on the 17th tee, another on the walkway from the tee box to the green and a third to broadcast from one of the water hazards near the green.

“We are excited that THE PLAYERS Championship will host the PGA TOUR’s first live virtual reality production,” said Rick Anderson, PGA TOUR Chief Media Officer. “The PGA TOUR has experimented with virtual reality content for nearly two years. We tested Intel’s True VR technology on a live basis at the Genesis Open in February, and were very pleased with the quality. We decided that executing a live VR experience on one of the most dramatic holes in golf was something that our fans would love, and the fact that we are partnering with Twitter to deliver 360 video will offer tremendous scale.”

“The Intel True VR platform will provide golf fans with a new, immersive experience using our end-to-end solution. From our stereoscopic cameras at the iconic 17th hole to creating a PGA TOUR VR application for THE PLAYERS Championship, we work with our partners to create the best fan experience,” said David Aufhauser, managing director, Intel Sports Group. “Working with the PGA TOUR, as well as global distribution via Twitter and Periscope, gives us the ability to expand the Intel True VR experience to more fans.”

More Sports Videogames Head To VR

For those of you looking to get immersed in a VR videogame of your favourite sport there have been a couple of new items that you should be aware of. First up for basketball fans Baskhead Training, a game where you are challenged to be the best shooter in the business, is already out on the likes of Google Daydream, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. However it was announced earlier this week that developers VRLines will look to complete the set by adding PlayStation VR and Google Cardboard support at a later date.

Additionally for golf and puzzle fans comes the newly renamed Moonscale Galaxy, which is also coming to PlayStation VR. A puzzler which takes crazy golf up to a galactic scale. You can watch a trailer for that here.
