Life In 360°: Austin City Limits

End of the week everybody! Time to do your best “I am honesty working on that right now, Janet!” impression and slide casually into the weekend with style.  Before we do all that though there’s some things we need to get out of the way first. Namely our last delve into the all-encompassing world that is created by 360 degree video.

We’ve spent a lot of the year thus far in America, and today is not going to be much different as we’re off there once again to check out some music, as I promised you not that long ago.  The reason is the PBS show Austin City Limits, currently in its 43rd Season – and you may not know this but it has its own 360 degree documentary series. Called ACL: Backstage, it provides (as you may have surmised) a different look at the show and the performances on it by being with the artists behind the scenes before they step out onto the stage at Austin’s famous Moody Theatre. There’s already been a number of episodes released in the series which is shot in 6K 360° video at by SubVRsive and ACL.

The next episode is due on January 25th 2018 will be featuring Killer Mike and El-P, better known as Run The Jewels. But for now, here are all the episodes released to date!

Ed Sheeran

“It’s Ed Sheeran’s second Austin City Limits performance, and since he first took the stage in 2014, his career has skyrocketed. Now, multiple Grammy wins and three platinum records later, Sheeran reflects on his signature style, die-hard fanbase, and what it means to be authentic in the modern music industry.”

Zac Brown Band

“Three-time Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum artists Zac Brown Band make a stop on their 2017 Welcome Home Tour to grace the ACL stage for the very first time. Sit backstage with the tight-knit band as they chat about ACL’s rich history, and join them onstage for their lively show.”

Unsung Heroes

“Many of the crew members of Austin City Limits have been working the show for decades. Hear them recount classic ACL stories and explain the ethos and philosophy behind what makes the show so popular among musicians.”

Father John Misty

“Josh Tillman returns to ACL for the first time under the moniker Father John Misty, bringing with him the largest on-stage ensemble of the season. In this intimate episode, Misty reflects on his role as an artist while living in perilous times.”

VRFocus will be back next week with another three visits to Life In 360°.  Where will we go next? Let’s see on Monday.

Life In 360°: Soar Through The Sky Over Yosemite’s Delights

One day we’re going to get away from Yosemite. I swear to goodness we will. Life In 360°’s home away from home has featured as the subject matter of our morning video post multiple times down the months, with previous examples ranging from taking a drive with a convoy of Ferrari cars to exploring the park itself with President Barak Obama. All showcasing the American National Park and the surrounding area in different ways.

Today we’re going to take in a bird’s eye view courtesy of the Nature on PBS YouTube channel. Hold on tight as you launch off the side of a cliff, the camera dangling (somewhat precariously) from the front of a hangglider. As you take flight above the valleys, rocky outcrops and giant boulders, sparkling waterways and trees so tall they boggle the mind.

The video was produced in part to promote PBS’ Nature series which featured an episode dedicated to Yosemite at the end of last month. American readers can see that episode in full on the PBS site. To do so click here.

Where will we end up on Friday? Probably Yosemite. But find out for sure by coming back to VRFocus then.

Life In 360°: The North-South Divide

It has been a while since we’ve had a full on 360 degree immersive short on Life In 360°, so why not round off our scheduled videos for this week with one? We’re heading over to PBS Digital Studios for a relatively recent release.

Called My Brother’s Keeper and inspired by PBS’s own drama series Mercy Street, My Brother’s Keeper is a tale of the American Civil War. I’ll let PBS themselves explain…

“It tells the story of two estranged brothers who, fighting on opposing sides of the Civil War, unexpectedly reunite on the battlefield at Antietam. As we walk into battle with Ethan (19) and Jackson (16), we flash back to glimpses of their young lives to understand what has led them to this extraordinary, life-altering moment amid the carnage and brutality of war. The VR short film uses innovative technologies and techniques to create a cinematic experience that brings this pivotal period of American history to life – placing the viewer not only at, but in, the Battle of Antietam.”

You can see the video below. VRFocus will be back on Monday with another 360 degree video.

Viveport’s Sundance Hub ‘VR on the Mountain’ to Feature World Premiere of My Brother’s Keeper by PBS Digital

The annual Sundance Film Festival opens in a few days and over the past few weeks VRFocus has reported on several virtual reality (VR) and 360-degree experiences debuting at the event. For those in attendance there’s going to be plenty of immersive content to explore, HTC Vive and Viveport are taking a lineup of apps as part of VR hub VR on the Mountain, which will be premiering PBS Digital’s My Brother’s Keeper.

A story-driven VR reenactment of the Battle of Antietam, My Brother’s Keeper is a companion piece to PBS’ Civil War series Mercy Street, set to debut a second series later this month. To create the experience PBS Digital partnered with StoryTech Immersive, Perception Squared and the Technicolor Experience Center, using a new action camera rig built by the filmmakers.  My Brother’s Keeper is written and directed by Connor Hair and Alex Meader.

One app being showcased at the hub will be Mindshow, an app enables users to improvise short animated vignettes in VR and share them with friends. “Mindshow lets you make VR cartoons with your body and voice,” describes the developer. Featuring a variety of playsets – from a distant planet to a comedy club stage – people can act out scenes using their bodies, then share content either as a VR scene visible through HTC Vive, or exported as 2D videos for online social channels.

In December VRFocus reported on the announcement that Baobab Studios’ sequel to popular VR animation INVASION!, ASTEROIDS! would be debuting at the festival. In fact ASTEROIDS! will be showcased at VR on the Mountain this Saturday 21st January, continuing the adventures of bumbling duo Mac and Cheez and their robot-dog, Peas.

Other titles exhibiting include: Deluxe VR and TIME-LIFE VR’s Remembering Pearl HarborThe Price of Freedom from Construct Studios, Google Tilt Brush and Pearl from Google Spotlight Stories.
