1950’s Gun-toting VR Comes To PAX In ‘The American Dream’

Samurai Punk, the studio behind the popular multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) Screencheat, has announced a virtual reality (VR) videogame that is most definitely intended as a satirical experience. The American Dream, revealed this weekend at PAX West 2016, Seattle, gives the player rifles, shotguns and dual-wielded pistols to perform every action, from eating donuts to working on an assembly line.

“The world of The American Dream sets its sights on a future where guns are used for all manner of things like eating a meal, driving a car or working to provide for your family,” reads Samurai Punk’s official description of the videogame. “Players travel through a vast complex constructed by a group of respected gun manufacturers aiming to show the world the virtues of guns for the common man.”

The videogame was playable at PAX West 2016 this weekend, with the environments and gameplay on offer presented in the official trailer below. Few other details on The American Dream are currently available, however a release in 2017 for ‘major VR platforms’ has been confirmed. At this moment in time, VRFocus would take that to suggest HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift. Of course, we’ll keep you updated when further details are officially revealed.

VR at PAX West 2016: What’s There and How to Find It

Seattle’s annual PAX West 2016 gaming convention starts tomorrow with VR once again expected to have a significant presence. So, here’s a reference guide on where to find VR on the show floor along with some handy expo floor maps to ease your itinerary planning.

PAX West returns to Seattle this September 2-5 at the Washington State Convention Center, and this year, virtual reality will be more prominent than ever. In addition to a large number of VR exhibitors, PAX will have talks dedicated to VR as well as a new “VR Freeplay” area. The freeplay area, located away from the main convention center on the 4th floor of the Seattle Westin, will be open throughout the long weekend and will have both the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive available to try out.

To make things easier for VR-inclined PAX attendees, we’ve compiled a list of where you can experience VR at PAX West 2016. Booth locations are provided in brackets, and the headsets available are in parenthesis. The devices listed are what will be available to demo at that booth, but not necessarily the full list of supported headsets. We will update this list as PAX rolls on, so let us know about any omissions in the comments below. Finally, check further down for high resolution maps of the show floor and opening times.

Funomena’s Oculus Touch Indie VR Puzzler Luna Will Demo at PAX West 2016

Luna was mentioned a little while ago when we reported on 30 titles set to launch with Oculus Touch this Fall, and now it will finally be playable at a public event this weekend at PAX West 2016, featuring in the Indie Megabooth.

This indie title is a virtual reality (VR) puzzler that uses the Oculus Touch controllers, and players are encouraged to observe, listen, customise, and interact with a storybook world. This world is inspired by origami, minimalist illustration, abstract sculpture, and stop animation.

The story that brings this title to life is as described by the developers, Funomena, themselves: “The game begins when a young Bird is lured from its nest by a mysterious Owl, whose hypnotic song convinces the Bird to swallow the last piece of the waning moon. Blown far from its nest by the ensuing storm, Bird wakes up in a scrambled, unfamiliar and lonely place.

“To help the Bird find its way home, players must first look to the stars. Here, they help untangle the mixed-up constellations of Bird’s memories, which appear as tangled webs of stardust floating in the night sky.”

As well as the title itself, there is said to also be the usual freebies that come along with this event, so if trying out this title on the Touch controllers isn’t enough, then your innate sense of wanting free goodies may kick in.

Luna will be available at the Oculus Touch stations and at the AMD booth if you are looking for other opportunities to come by it during PAX West 2016.
