Oculus Connect 5 Will Livestream In VR, But Not On Rift

Oculus Connect 5 Will Livestream In VR, But Not On Rift

You’ll be able to watch next week’s Oculus Connect 5 in all but the most expensive of Facebook’s VR headsets.

The Oculus Venues app, which launched earlier this year on Oculus Go and Gear VR, will be streaming keynote talks and eSports matches live from this year’s developer conference. Venues hasn’t yet launched on the Oculus Rift, though, so owners of the PC VR headset will have to settle for standard streaming if they don’t have a Go or Gear.

Venues is a free piece of software that allows you to meet up with friends and watch certain events either on a giant virtual screen or with panoramic views. It’s already been used for sporting and musical events (and, brilliantly, it streamed the Twilight Saga last weekend), but this is the first time Oculus is livestreaming one of its own events from inside the app.

Featured events include the opening keynote, the always-eventful John Carmack talk and livestreamed matches of Onward and Echo Arena. Talk-based sessions will be shown in 180 degrees, but Oculus will also offer a first look at in-VR 360 degree streaming gameplay for the eSports sessions.

Elsewhere Oculus has confirmed that The Void’s popular location-based VR experience, Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, will be available to play at the show, which will give anyone that hasn’t been to Disneyland in the last 12 months a chance to try it out.

Oculus Connect 5 kicks off on September 26th with an opening keynote that’s bound to be filled with news. You can be sure that we’ll be covering all of the latest announcements from the show.

Oculus Go & Gear VR: Live-Event-App Oculus Venues veröffentlicht

Live Event App Oculus Venues Launches Today On Go And Gear VR

Live Event App Oculus Venues Launches Today On Go And Gear VR

Oculus Venues is Facebook’s portal for live event entertainment, launching today on Oculus Go and Gear VR. The one-stop app is building up to feature a piece of live entertainment almost every single night for the next three months. The first event starts tonight at 7:30PM PT and will feature live music from Vance Joy. Following that event are an assortment of MLB games, comedy shows, and more.

Oculus Venues also has social features, much Oculus Rooms and other upcoming entertainment apps, letting you connect with friends and fans from around the world. It’s basically like a single ticket that gets you into all of the best lives shows.

Here is the full list of planned events from today through the end of August, which covers about three months of scheduled content, although it is reportedly “depending on your location” as well:

Coming “later this summer” Oculus also teased content from Showtime, Lionsgate films, new concerts, live NBA Leage Pass games, as well as additional NextVR events, and MLB games.

All of the content sounds promising, but it’s going to take more than a few one-off comedy shows, sports games, and old movies to really turn VR into a social hang out space that people voluntarily visit on a regularly basis. Nevertheless, this could be a step in that direction. First, let me watch the Super Bowl in VR from home, then we can talk.

F8 2018: An Oculus Go Recap

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his team certainly had plenty to talk about during the opening keynote of F8 2018, touching on new Facebook features, privacy and of course virtual reality (VR). In fact VR featured fairly prominently with the major news surrounding the new standalone headset Oculus Go. VRFocus covered the announcements extensively yesterday but for those after a nice little round-up of what was going on we’ve created a quick recap video.

As mentioned Oculus Go was the main talking point when it came to VR. Retailing for $199 USD for the 32GB model and $249 for the 64GB version, consumers can now purchase the headset via the Oculus website in 23 countries. The head-mounted display (HMD) is all about making VR even more accessible to the masses. You don’t need a specific smartphone, or and expensive PC to run it as everything is built in, just an Android or iOS device that can run the accompanying app for setup and software purposes.

While the headset announcement wasn’t really a surprise – it was first shown at Oculus Connect 4 (OC4) – the accompanying software additions were certainly eye catching. Social meetup point Oculus Rooms got an overhaul, updating the original Gear VR version with a customisable environment and new games care of a collaboration with Hasbro. As part of that, Oculus Avatars also got an update adding custom skin shading, hair color, and clothing whilst making them fit with the lighting and scene better.

Then there was Oculus Venues, another social feature that’ll let friends watch live events together, from sports tournaments to comedy shows and concerts, with a big part of that helped by a collaboration with NextVR. And just to round things off there was Oculus TV, a virtual living room with a massive TV which will serve as a launch area for apps like Facebook Watch, Red Bull TV, Pluto TV and Netflix.

Then there are all the videogames and other apps that Oculus Go customers will be able to enjoy thanks to the headsets integration with Oculus’ Mobile SDK, meaning compatibility with Gear VR content, unlocking over 1000 experiences on day one.

Check out the video below for more details. VRFocus will continue its coverage of F8 as the conference moves into its second day.
