Oculus Details New Functionality in Audio SDK – Near-field 3D Audio and Volumetric Sound Sources

In a new series of articles on the official Oculus Developer Blog, the company is offering an overview of additions to the Oculus Audio SDK, specifically new techniques for near-field 3D audio and volumetric sound source rendering. These articles serve as a primer for Oculus Connect 4, taking place October 11th and 12th, which will feature presentations about their “breakthroughs in spatial audio technologies.”

Near-field audio rendering aims to further enhance the realism of spatial audio in VR, particularly for sound sources within arm’s reach of the user. This is achieved with more precise HRTFs that take acoustic diffraction into account, as the head will bend higher frequency sound waves, causing an ‘acoustic shadow’ that is simulated with different filtering effects for each ear, in response to the direction of the sound source.

A second article on volumetric sound sources discusses the problem of using single point sources for large objects or characters in spatial audio rendering—a single point source tends to sound unnatural, like it is coming only from the centre of the object. Oculus Research’s solution was to develop a “process to compute the projection based on the distance and radius”, using spherical harmonics to create a “physically correct and high performance way to represent large sound sources.”

Both articles go into quite a bit of detail into how Oculus is thinking about and attempting to solve these problems. We expect to hear more on this topic from Oculus at the Connect conference in October.

Epic Games Comes to Oculus Connect 4

Oculus are bringing back their successful annual virtual reality (VR) conference this year with Oculus Connect 4, where many industry professionals will be appearing to offer insights, speculation and support to attendees. As with previous years, Epic Games are planning to be in attendance.

Epic Games are the creators of Unreal Engine, the current version of which, Unreal Engine 4, forms the underpinnings of some of the biggest and most successful VR titles currently available, such as EVE: Valkyrie and Robo Recall.

The team from Epic Games will be in attendance at Oculus Connect 4 to offer answers to technical questions during their ‘office hours’ where developers and engineers can ask for help to get through obstacles encountered in projects using Unreal Engine 4.

Nick Whiting, Epic Games’ Technical Director of AR and VR will be giving an in-depth look at first-person shooter for the Oculus Rift, Robo Recall, examining the successes and failures of the title and the performance of Unreal Engine 4.

Also hosted by Epic Games at the event will be the Developer Highlight: Future Lighthouse, where the creator of VR storytelling experience MELITA, who will analyse the current state of the VR industry and community and discuss how best to move forward.

Other events planned for Oculus Connect 4 include a talk on VR Esports by Christopher McKelvy, a workshop of Social VR and a live demonstration on how to capture mixed reality experiences. Further information can be found at the official Oculus Connect 4 website.

Oculus Connect 4 Reveal Details on Guest Speakers

For those who were a little disappointed at the lack of Oculus at E3 this year, there is still hope for some big announcement from the Facebook-owned virtual reality (VR) company, with some further detailed being revealed about the upcoming Oculus Connect event in October, 2017.

The Oculus Connect event will be the fourth time the event has run, and is running under the name ‘Oculus Connect 4’. The organisers are promising a variety of talks from features speakers covering topics such as software engineering, product design and mixed reality. There will be four different content tracks covering the areas of Design, Develop, Distribute and Future, with over 30 sessions across the various tracks.

The following talks have already been confirmed:

  • John Carmack’s App Critiques: Oculus Chief Technology Officer John Carmack will offer a live presentation involving app critiques.
  • Social VR Workshop: Head of Platform and Development Engineering John Bartkiw will be discussing using existing tools to offer social VR experiences for Oculus.
  • Mixed Reality Capture on Rift: A Demonstration of how to use the Oculus Rift dev kit to capture mixed reality experiences.
  • VR Esports: Christopher McKelvy, Head of Esports will talk about what role VR has in the world of Esports, now and in the future.

More talks will be confirmed later, with plans for talks from developers, partners and creators including names such as NASA, Ready At Dawn, Unity Technologies among many others.

Oculus to Talk “Breakthroughs in Spatial Audio Technologies” at Connect Conference

Oculus Connect 4, the company’s fourth annual developer conference, is set for October 11th and 12th in San Jose, California. There, Oculus will share with developers some of its latest research and developments, including what’s coming to the company’s VR Audio SDK.

Spatial audio is hugely important for creating convincing virtual reality worlds. Traditional stereo audio often sounds like it emanates from within your head. In VR, most sounds need to have distinct sources that sound as if they’re coming from somewhere within the virtual world, just like they would in real life. But simulating realistic sounds in complex 3D environments isn’t as easy as it may seem, especially if you need to do so accurately and efficiently. Many companies have been working on the challenge of spatial audio in VR, with varying degrees of complexity and success.

At Connect 2017 in October, Oculus Audio Design Mananger Tom Smurdon and
Software Engineering Manager Pete Stirling will take to the stage in a session titled ‘2017 Breakthroughs in Spatial Audio Technologies’, to overview the latest spatial audio tech devised by the company.

Get up to speed on key terminology and concepts you need to know, then dive directly into the newest audio tech developed by Oculus. We’ll cover how new techniques and tools like Near Field HRTF and Volumetric Sound Sources help create dramatically increased immersion for people experiencing your game or app. Attendees will also get a first look at what’s coming in the Audio SDK roadmap.

The session description also promises to give attendees a first look at what’s coming to the Oculus Audio SDK, implying that whatever new spatial audio tech the company has cooked up will soon be rolled into the SDK.

The session is among more than 30 expected at the developer conference, 14 of which are now revealed on the Oculus Connect schedule.

Applications now Open for Oculus Connect 4

The recent Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June is one of the biggest events on the videogame calendar, attended by companies covering the entire breadth of the industry. VRFocus was there – if you caught some of the extensive coverage – but there was one noticeable absence, Oculus. The company has attended the last few years but decided to forgo the 2017 event. Shortly after E3 closed for another year it then announced its usual event, Oculus Connect, a two day conference which is now in its fourth year. For those keen to attend and find out what Oculus has got planned, applications are now open for OC4.

What will be announced at the event is still a secret of course but expect there to be plenty of content news, including exclusive, never-before-seen virtual reality (VR) demos. There also might be further details on the recently revealed standalone head-mounted display (HMD) the company has been working on, or the ‘Santa Cruz’ headset that was showcased during OC3.

If those do get showcased they’ll be during the highly anticipated keynote address which will feature Oculus Chief Scientist Michael Abrash and of course John Carmack and his infamous unscripted talks.

OC4 will feature more than 30 sessions, with talks by creators from across the worlds of gaming, interactive entertainment, film, art, and education. These will be split across four content tracks, Design, Develop, Distribute and Future, a must for anyone in the industry or planning to get into it.

Applications are open now, with the final deadline being 11th August 2017. Regular conference passes start at $399 USD, with early bird ($299), academic ($99), and developer ($199) discounts available if registrations are completed by 21st August.

Oculus has been aggressively promoting the Oculus Rift and Touch of late with a summer deal available for $399/£399 GBP for a limited time. After which the price will go up but not back to the usual £598. Instead there will be a permanent price reduction to £499.

Oculus Connect 4 Dates Revealed for October

Today Oculus has announced that its annual conference Oculus Connect (OC) will be taking place in October across two days at the San Jose McEnery Convention Centre, California.

Running from 11th – 12th October 2017, at present only the date has been revealed with the Oculus blog stating: “We’ll share details on how to register and this year’s exciting lineup of speakers, tech talks, and special guests in the coming months, so stay tuned!”

Oculus always saves its biggest announcements for OC, with last years event showcasing the ‘Santa Cruz’ wireless headset, and videogames such as Arktika.1 by 4A Games, Robo Recall by Epic Games and Force Field VR’s Landfall all making their debut.

It’ll be especially relevant for 2017 as the company didn’t have an official presence during last week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) event, with just a handful of developers using the headset for their demonstrations.

And with everything that’s gone on – and still going on – in relation to Zenimax’s lawsuit and Palmer Luckey having left – he wasn’t exactly present at OC3 – Oculus/Facebook maybe looking at ending the year on a more positive note.
