Practice Those Swings When Kaiju Driving Range Comes to 100ft Robot Golf

One of the quirkiest titles available for PlayStation VR is No Goblins 100ft Robot Golf. As the name implies, the studio has mixed the slow paced game of golf with giant mechs. Today it’s been announced that the videogame will get an update in September, with players able to take their skills to the Kaiju Driving Range.

Kaiju Driving Range is a one vs one local game mode. One player controls the 100ft robot golfer via the TV, whilst the other puts on the PlayStation VR headset and becomes a crab kaiju. The aim of the game is for the robot to achieve some awesome golf shots, with the kaiju there to stop as many as possible.

Talking about the new mode, Dan Teasdale co-founder at No Goblin wrote on PlayStation.Blog: “We think it’s a pretty neat mode, and I especially love it because it takes advantage of one of the best unique features of PlayStation VR: the social screen! Being in VR and competing against another human player that’s in the same room as you is a super fun experience, especially when that VR person is a two hundred foot crab that can rip tall buildings out of the ground.”

What makes the news even better, if you own 100ft Robot Golf then the update is completely free when it goes live on 12th September.

The Best of PlayStation VR Launch: Sports Games

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has ensured PlayStation VR has a staggering amount of content available at launch, with just about every videogame genre covered in some way. Sport is no different, although not in the same quantities as other genres such as first-person shooters (FPS). It’s social multiplayers that are going to be an important part of attracting consumers to virtual reality (VR), so combining these with sports can be a powerful showcase of the technology.

There are several videogames in the launch line-up that can be described as sporting titles but the couple that VRFocus thinks are worth a look at are below. These combine skilful sporting prowess with tongue-in-cheek gameplay, not taking themselves too seriously. When you can play pool, or just smash bottles, then climb into a giant robot smash buildings whilst trying to get a hole-in-one, there’s definitely some fun to be had.

Sports Bar VR – CherryPop Games

First on the list is Sports Bar VR, renamed from its previous incarnation on HTC Vive as Pool Nation VR. While the original title focused around playing pool with some side distractions, subsequent updates have expanded the premise even further. Sports Bar VR is now more of an apt name for the title, as players can play Pool, Darts, Air Hockey, Skreeball, Shuffleboard, Chess and Checkers all in one place. Multiplayer plays an important part in Sports Bar VR, with up to six people able to hangout in the bar and engage in the various challenges. Should gamers not want to do any of this there’s also the option to just trash the place as well.

100ft Robot Golf – No Goblin

Dispelling with the practice of simulation golf titles and going for all out action and fun is 100ft Robot Golf. The name tells you everything you need to know about what to expect from the videogame. Giant mechs do battle across cityscapes and rolling hills, but rather than machine guns, lasers and rocket launchers you’ve got golf clubs. Get the ball in the hole in as fewer shots as possible, got a building in the way, then turn it into rumble to improve that line and get the birdie. When you’re competing against other players they can also get in the way so its time for some melee combat, wrapping your golf club around their head to slow them down. 100ft Robot Golf is a title not only aimed at everyone but will also appeal to everyone.

100ft Robot Golf Featured Saints Row Character for PAX West

Over the last weekend PAX West held its annual event in Seattle, Washington, US. The videogame event featured a raft of virtual reality (VR) content including the newly released Damaged Core from High Voltage Software, the Tomb Raider VR Experience by Square Enix, and Reload Studio’s World War Toons. There was also 100ft Robot Golf on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE’s) PlayStation 4 booth with one special addition, Saint’s Row character Pierce Washington as one of the pilots.

100ft Robot Golf Saints Row

Confirmed on 100ft Robot Golf’s Twitter, the inclusion of Washington meant that visitors to PAX West could jump in a giant robot with a Saints Row purple skin to take on would be challengers to a round of golf. Developer No Goblin had the videogame running as a four player split screen for some multiplayer action. It’s unclear if the inclusion of the new character will be permanent, come with future DLC or was just for the event itself.

VRFocus has reported on 100ft Robot Golf numerous times before as it’s compatible with the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD). The title was on display at June’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, California, and we got time to preview 100ft Robot Golf.

The name tells you exactly what you’re getting with the experience, control massive 100ft robots while playing golf. Although there is more to it than achieving par, as the course takes in cities, mountains, lakes and more to traverse. While the robots can jump and fly, to get the best shot through areas such as the city you’re going to have to level some buildings. To add to this when playing multiplayer you’ll have to contend with other opponents, not just beating your score but also trying to attack you directly.

100ft Robot Golf launches for PlayStation 4 on 10th October, three days before the arrival of PlayStation VR. For all the latest updates on 100ft Robot Golf and PlayStation VR, keep reading VRFocus.
