Apple’s rumored XR headset needs to overcome bulkiness and fatigue

Apple’s new rumored mixed reality headset — expected to be released later this year — will reportedly have an 8K display and hand and finger tracking features, an Apple spokesman told Bloomberg recently. The new headset may also have a lightweight fabric exterior, but is expected to be priced higher than current consumer-grade VR headsets, some of which sell for hundreds of dollars.

And, according to a report from The Information, it will be able to map surfaces and edges, allow users to read small type and see other people standing in front of and behind virtual objects, have more than dozen tracking cameras, and could incorporate Siri inputs and a thimble-like finger controller.

But to succeed commercially, it will need to overcome user experience challenges such as fatigue and bulkiness, experts say.

Jon Cheney

“Size is obvious,” said Jon Cheney, CEO and co-founder of Seek, an augmented reality content company.

The most popular VR headsets used today, such as Playstation VR and the Oculus Quest, are heavy and claustrophobic, especially for any extended use.

“Apple wants this to be as ready to wear as the Apple Watch,” he told Hypergrid Business. “Apple isn’t trying to compete with Oculus. They will move the category forward and come out with something that will be the next generation, and size will be a primary element. It has to look and feel normal enough that people will wear it anywhere.”

Apple will not try to compete with existing VR headsets, he said, but move the industry forward.

“Apple’s headset will be nothing like a HoloLens 2 or a Quest 2,” he said. “It will create a new category that most other companies are still dreaming about. The glasses will change everything about how we interact with the world — how we consume media, how we find directions, how we interact with people, and how we find information. The world will be the canvas upon which Apple writes its next chapter.”

There are a lot of ways in which Apple can do that.

For example, if instead of having the user interact with the headset via voice — or event though-control  methods like the Elon Musk’s Neuralink technology — then headsets could become much easier and friendlier to use, said David Ciccarelli, founder and CEO of Voices, a platform for voice actors.

Ciccarelli said that he was one of the first Canadian adopter of Google Glass. “One thing I learned is that the world wasn’t, and perhaps still isn’t ready for smart glasses,” he told Hypergrid Business. “They are too big, bulky and socially awkward. Functionality was limited, in essence a novelty product.”

David Ciccarelli

“But If Apple could position the glasses as an alternative to screens, alleviating screen fatigue with voice interactions included, they’ll tap into a world-wide phenomenon of people ready to be on the go,” he told Hypergrid Business. “The pandemic may have just offered perfect timing for a new generation of mobile consumers.”

For Apple’s smart glasses to be a commercial success, they will have to fashionable, or cool, so that people can wear them as a style statement and a symbol of their success.

Based on recent developments, it looks like Apple is serious about moving ahead into the next evolution of communication technology.

It recently acquired VR media streaming company NextVR and AR headset lens-maker Akonia Holographics, launched its ARKit development platform in 2019, has a stream of VR/AR-related patents, and has a dedicated research unit working on AR/VR products.

Apple Confirms Acquisition of VR Live Streaming Company NextVR

NextVR, the live event broadcasting platform for VR headsets, has been acquired by Apple in what was reportedly a $100 million purchase.

Update (March 15th, 2020): For the first time since reports broke back in April, Apple has confirmed that it was the buyer of the VR live streaming company NextVR, Bloomberg reports. Apple did not confirm the price of the acquisition, but earlier reports suggested $100 million.

This week NextVR’s website was stripped down leaving only a short message in its wake: “NextVR is Heading in a New Direction. Thank you to our partners and fans around the world for the role you played in building this awesome platform for sports, music and entertainment experiences in Virtual Reality.”

Original Article (April 6th, 2020): Founded in 2009, the Orange County-based startup broadcasts stereoscopic video of live sports and music to a wide swath of VR headsets, including Oculus Go, Oculus Quest, PSVR, and PC VR headsets such as HTC Vive and Oculus Rift S. Its unique selling proposition has always been its ability to let fans get close to the action in a way traditional monoscopic livestreams simply can’t, i.e. by letting VR users watch live events from the best seat in the house.

The company has come a long ways since it initially launched the platform on Samsung Gear VR in 2015, amassing over 40 patents and strategic broadcasting partnerships with the likes of the NBA, NHL, WWE, FOX Sports, Live Nation, and the International Champions Cup, and significantly upping its video quality in the process. The company has also previously sets its sights on six degrees of freedom-enabled volumetric video, higher resolution output, and augmented reality support.

According to CrunchBase, the company’s total funding comes to $115.5 million, with its latest investment, a Series B round amounting to $80 million, arriving in August 2016.

The acquisition is said to follow the company’s failure to secure a Series C round in early 2019, which coincided with a layoff of 40% of its staff.

NextVR Brings Its Live Streamed Events to Oculus Quest

NextVR, the VR livestreaming event app, is now available on Oculus Quest for free, which is said to come alongside a new technology that promises clearer and sharper video rendering.

The studio calls the new rendering technology ‘PAVE’, which is said to enable new features like enhanced in-experience graphic overlays (e.g. stats, instant replays) and forthcoming multi-user interactions such as multi-user game trivia during timeouts.

Previously, NextVR content was only available on Quest via the Oculus Venues app, which provides communal viewing of select real-time live events. In contrast, the NextVR app is a single-user experience that also provides replays and extra content too.

“NextVR is pairing our newest rendering technology with Oculus Quest to provide an outstanding fan experience.” said David Cole, NextVR co-founder & CEO, “We’re launching with a collection of experiences that best demonstrate the capabilities of our technology including a show this September 10th hosted by Pete Davidson recorded live at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City.”

NextVR Announces Launch on Oculus Rift

Though NextVR has developed a name for itself as an immersive live-event broadcaster, for the most part the app that lets users get up close and personal with live sporting events and concerts has been confined to mobile virtual reality (VR) devices such as Google Daydream and Samsung Gear VR. Now the company have announced that PC VR users will be able to enjoy the events delivered to Oculus Rift.

The company says that it is intending on leading the way with regards to how VR content is created and delivered, as from today Oculus Rift users will be able to download the free NextVR app.

With the launch of this version of NextVR, the app is now available on the following platforms: Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, PlayStation VR, HTC Vive Pro, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality, Gear VR, and Google Daydream.

“The VR community has been waiting for NextVR to become available on Rift for quite some time and we’ve finally answered the call,” saidNextVR CEO and Co-Founder David Cole. “Today, NextVR launched on Oculus Rift, and we’re incredibly happy to provide our immersive experiences to the core fan base that has been there since the beginning of VR. Now that NextVR is available on Rift, our free app can be downloaded for fans to experience on all platforms spanning PC, mobile, stand alone and gaming console. Our next step is to release on Steam to further meet the requirements of the PC community.”

NextVR was first launched in 2009, and since then the company have introduced a number of improvements to the app, such as improving its image capture capabilities, allowing users to experience higher resolution VR and 360-degree video.

NextVR also starting rolling out 6 Degrees of Freedom compatibility with its on-demand experiences this year.

The World Cup is due to kick off today, and Oculus announced that US residents will be able to watch select matches of the quadrennial football championship for free in Oculus Venues, the company’s social VR event viewing app for Oculus Go and Gear VR.

Oculus Venues, which first launched with Oculus Go back in early May and later came to Gear VR, lets you watch live events with ‘thousands’ of other fans in the same shared space, which in the case of the 2018 World Cup means a stadium full of VR headset owners watching the sporting event live as it unfolds. Presented by FOX Sports, Oculus Venues will play host to a few select matches. Check out the schedule below:

NextVR Debuts New High Resolution Video Format for NBA Finals Highlights Reels

NextVR, the company specializing in live VR sports and entertainment broadcasting, has already begun its public debut of the new high-resolution video format teased back at CES earlier this year, which comes via free, on-demand game highlights of the 2018 NBA Finals featuring the Golden State Warriors vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers.

On the day following each game of the NBA Finals, NextVR is publishing a high-resolution, steroscopic highlights reel on the NBA Finals channel within the NextVR app.

NextVR supports Oculus Go, Gear VR, PSVR, Windows “Mixed Reality” VR headsets, and Google Daydream. The company also recently announced support for HTC Vive & Vive Pro, and also has its sights on a Rift app soon.

“Improving fidelity and realism is critical for the success of virtual reality media. This upgraded format adds detail, sharpness and enhanced 3D depth to our broadcasts, greatly increasing realism and overall sense of presence,” said David Cole, NextVR co founder and CEO. “While all users will see an immediate improvement, this only scratches the surface of the capabilities of this format and our technology platform. More advanced headsets slated to ship in the future will take even greater advantage of this new VR broadcast technology.”

Cole previously said that, in the best case scenario with 8 Mbps bandwidth, the company has the ability to stream 20 pixels per degree, up from 8.5 pixels per degree previously—done in stereo and at 60 FPS. While it’s uncertain if the current implementation has hit those numbers, it appears at least NextVR is soft launching the high-res capture for on-demand content at the moment, although full event livestreaming probably isn’t far behind on their roadmap.

On the list of other future tech yet to be publicly released is NextVR’s volumetric video capture and playback, which allows the viewer’s perspective to move positionally within the video (rather than just rotationally). While it has yet to debut on the platform, our hands-on at CES 2018 was a tantalizing look forward into what could become a standard practice in VR video.

NextVR also serves as on of the main content streamers for Oculus Venuesan app from Oculus that allows Gear VR and Go users to watch live events in the company of ‘thousands’ of other users—putting the company in a unique position as it gains yet more partners, which currently include the NBA, NFL, FOX Sports, Live Nation, WWE and the International Champions Cup.

Concerts by Vance Joy, Chromeo, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, and Everclear are hitting Venues all throughout the summer. Other events hitting Venues later this summer include films screenings from Lionsgate Films, featuring Reservoir Dogs (1992), Sinister (2012)Apocalypse Now (1979), and National Lampoon’s Van Wilder (2002).

Most Gear VR-compatible smartphones work with Venues, excluding Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Oculus’ Code of Conduct is also in full force, with community moderators on-hand in Venues.

You can download Oculus Venues here for Gear VR and and Oculus Go.

Oculus says they’ll be highlighting Venues events in Oculus Go and Gear VR’s ‘Explore’ section where you can subscribe to upcoming events and launch them from there.

NextVR Partners With Oculus to Bring Live Events to ‘Oculus Venues’

NextVR, the live event VR broadcasting company, today announced a partnership with Oculus to bring live VR events to Oculus Venues, the company’s upcoming social viewing app that will allow mass viewing of events such as sports, concerts and comedy.

According to a press release, Venues will be available for the new Oculus Go headset and for Gear VR starting this month. To get an idea of what sort of 360 and 180 content the platform has to offer, the NextVR app is also now available for Oculus Go as well as Gear VR.

NextVR says they’ll be providing a bevy of livestreaming VR video such as stand-up comedy from the Gotham Comedy Club, live concerts from up-and-coming bands via School Night, and the International Champions Cup soccer match. Oculus Venues is touted to bring live events to ‘thousands’ of simultaneous users.

“Oculus Venues is a bold move to provide profound social VR engagement and we are honored to deliver such an important part of this new product release from Oculus,” said David Cole, NextVR co-founder and CEO. “NextVR has built a passionate fan base around leading VR content experiences. Venues will satisfy our fans who want to enjoy this type of content on a massively social scale.”

NextVR has livestreamed VR sports broadcasts and other live events thanks to partnerships with the NBA, NHL, NFL, and entertainment companies such as the WWE, making for a wide swath of content using their end-to-end streaming solutions.

The company most recently teased a few new hardware and software tools at CES 2018 earlier this year too that looks to dramatically increase the quality of VR video, even adding volumetric video to the company’s content roadmap.

This Week in VR Sport: LiveLike & Fox Sports, FC Barcelona v Real Madrid C.F and SAP Catamaran VR Experience

It’s the start of a new month but the end of June had plenty to offer in the way of virtual reality (VR) sporting announcements. LiveLike has teamed up with Fox Sports to broadcast three Gold Cup games, later this month NextVR will broadcast El Clásico live for the first time and German tech company SAP has created an immersive experience on board a catamaran.

LiveLike and Fox Sports to Broadcast Three Gold Cup Games in 360 as Part of new ‘Virtual Suite’

Fox Sports has been a regular on This Week in VR Sports, having partnered with another regular NextVR on boxing as well as other sports including American Football. This week however is the turn of traditional (European) football – or soccer if you like – with Fox partnering with San Francisco-based startup LiveLike to showcase three Gold Cup matches in 360-degrees.

This is all part of a new virtual suite powered by LiveLike called Fox Sports VR App, with the CONCACAF Soccer Gold Cup being used to promote the app. Users get to overlook the field, being able to select different camera angles, checkout the suite and chat with friends – represented by basic avatars, view pre-produced content, and more.

To see what it’s all about take a look at the video below. The matches begin at the end of the week with the US team playing Panama on 8th July.

NextVR to Live Broadcast FC Barcelona v Real Madrid C.F This Month

Regular VRFocus readers should be well aware of NextVR by now, as the company tends to be fairly prominent in the field of 360-degree sports broadcasting. Later this month El Clásico Miami will be taking place, featuring football heavy weights FC Barcelona and Real Madrid C.F., and naturally NextVR will be livestreaming the proceedings.

La Liga rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid C.F. will be going head to head on 29th July, 2017 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, with Real Madrid C.F. making a record fifth appearance in the International Champions Cup (ICC), having played in every year of the tournament’s history.

NextVR will be broadcasting El Clásico live in 360-degrees for the first time. It’ll feature dedicated announcers, the halftime show experience and behind-the-scenes footage exclusive to VR headsets. Multiple cameras positioned along the pitch and throughout Hard Rock Stadium will transport fans into the heart of the action.

Fans with a Samsung Gear VR headset or Google Daydream View, can download the free NextVR app from the Oculus Store  or the Google Play Store respectively.

Go Extreme Sailing with SAP+You: The Smarter Skipper Experience

Ever wanted to see what extreme sailing on vessels like a catamaran is all about but never quite fancied all the pressure and stress that goes with it? Well SAP, a German tech company that’s fond of sponsoring this type of sport has created an immersive experience called SAP+You: The Smarter Skipper experience.

The experience puts the viewer on a replica catamaran, getting up close and personal with the extreme sailors. Fans of extreme sailing will get be able to get greater insight into the sport, watching the sailors race whilst being fed relevant data such as real-time wind conditions, boat speed and water currents.

“When you get to sit on the boat virtually, you almost feel how it lifts up and picks up speed,” said Milan Cerny, the technology and innovation lead of SAP’s Global Sponsorships business, reports SportTechie.

“In virtual reality, you’re in the middle of the action,” Cerny added. “You’re getting the thrill, understanding what’s going on and how (sailors) are interacting with what devices on the boat and deciding where they should go. You could see how far competitors are behind you, if they’re approaching the boat. It’s an interactive way and playful way to understand the measures that are important to win a race.”
