The VR Drop: An Early March Bonanza!

If you can tear yourself away from playing Elden Ring on your PC, PlayStation or Xbox – I know it’s hard – then there are a few virtual reality (VR) videogames arriving next week worth your time. They may all be indie gems rather than blockbuster sensations but they all look awesome in their own right.

Lost in Place

Lost in Place – Bright Corners

First up is cute puzzler Lost in Place. The gameplay is simple enough, all you need to do is pilot a tiny, fragile spaceship through a bunch of everyday environments. “The ship is very touchy, quite expensive, and it will break on just about everything,” explains developer Bright Corners, so you’ll have to be very patient across the 50 levels. It’s already out on Meta Quest’s App Lab and will now join SteamVR.

Buccaneers! The New Age of Piracy – Skyward Digital

Time for some pirate shenanigans with Buccaneers! The New Age of Piracy, a single-player RPG where you become a fearsome captain waging naval warfare on anyone who comes too close. Engage in tense naval and land battles whilst customising your ship with new paint schemes, cannons and upgrades. This is purely ship-to-ship combat either, you’ll be able to board enemy vessels and assault forts to loot the best treasure.

Vox Machinae

Vox Machinae – Space Bullet Dynamics Corporation

Having been a Steam Early Access title since 2018, now it’s time for Vox Machinae’s official PC VR launch, with one extra edition; the mech combat experience is coming to Meta Quest 2 as well. Primarily an online, team-based multiplayer where you jump into giant mechs to destroy one another, next week’s launch will see new features including a story-driven campaign with evil corporations and a cast of characters to bring it all to life.

Labyrinth deLux – A Crusoe Quest – Enigma/K5 Factory

Taking inspiration from the likes of Talos Principle and God of LightLabyrinth deLux – A Crusoe Quest is a laser-based puzzler that blends Mayan and Aztec culture into its sci-fi gameplay. Featuring a narrative where you play a space trucker called Robin, pulled wildly off course into an abandoned space station, there are 16 puzzles to solve.

NeonHAT – Entalto Studios

Entalto Studios originally created NeonHAT as part of Playstation Talents Games Camp Valencia, with the videogame hitting PlayStation VR last summer. Soon it’ll be the turn of PC VR headsets, offering players the chance to test their skills in this neon-drenched racer. NeonHAT features ten courses across three gameplay modes; Extreme Derby, Race, and Pursuit, with five bosses to take care of.

The VR Drop: A Breezey RPG Summer

The VR Drop 230721

It’s hot, it’s sunny so why stay inside playing virtual reality (VR) videogames? Because it’s hot, too sunny and quite frankly July has been filled with awesome releases. And that’s set to continue as the month comes to a close next week with more VR titles than you can shake a stick at gearing up for launch. Here are five that VRFocus is looking forward to in the coming days.

Winds & Leaves

Winds & Leaves – Trebuchet

After previously releasing Prison Boss VR Canadian developer Trebuchet returns with a far more open-air experience. In Winds & Leaves you become a virtual gardener bringing life back to a barren planet. Using a unique connection to the trees and plants around you, the only way you can explore the world is by planting forests that provide life-giving energy whilst offering a safe haven to return to. A VR experience for nature lovers.

  • Supported platforms: PlayStation VR
  • Launch date: 27th July

Arcsmith – Bithell Games

In Arcsmith you become a space engineer guided by a rather reluctant master arcsmith Korith Dinn. Onboard his usually quiet space station you’ll learn how to construct a variety of space-based items and machinery, fitting parts together in your own way. Whilst these three-dimensional engineering puzzles have specifications to work to, the modular design of the components means you can get creative with each assembly.

Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever – XR Games

Initially due for release earlier this month on Steam, Zombieland fans can get in on the action in a few days. An official franchise tie-in with the films, Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever is an arcade-style shooter testing your aim and speed across a variety of zombie-filled courses. Get two headshots in a row to activate slow-mo, giving you more time to rack up those kills and points to unlock more goodies.

Vengeful Rites – Deep Dive Interactive

A Steam Early Access title that arrived back in 2018, Vengeful Rights is a big, story-driven role-playing game (RPG) set for an official launch next week. Filled with puzzles to solve and monsters to fight you’ll be able to wield swords, bows and magical abilities as you seek to save the world in this classic fantasy adventure.

Neon Hat

Neon Hat – Entalto Studios

From Spanish indie team Entalto Studios, Neon Hat is a very vibrant, cyber racer designed for use with PlayStation Move controllers, each one serves as a rocket booster allowing players to fly around corners and through checkpoints. Featuring its own original synthwave soundtrack, Neon Hat features ten courses across three gameplay modes.

  • Supported platforms: PlayStation VR
  • Launch date: 29th July

Indie Racer Neon Hat is Coming to PlayStation VR Next Week

Neon Hat

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has a number of initiatives to support indie developers on PlayStation, one of which is Playstation Talents Games Camp Valencia. Back in February a selection of titles were revealed as part of the 2021 accelerator, one being the PlayStation VR videogame Neon Hat. Today, the team behind its creation Entalto Studios has revealed Neon Hat’s launch will take place next week.

Neon Hat

A very vibrant, neon-drenched racer designed for use with PlayStation Move controllers, each one serves as a rocket booster allowing players to fly around corners and through checkpoints. Featuring its own original synthwave soundtrack, Neon Hat features ten courses across three gameplay modes. The first is Extreme Derby which is described as “a pure racing experience”, whilst “Race” is against three opponents, both feature global leaderboards to compete on.

The third mode is slightly different. Called “Pursuit” this is essentially a boss mode where players have to destroy a Data Snatcher. This ties in with Neon Hat’s backstory where players become what’s known as a H.A.T. Operator. “You are one of the few people qualified to fly around the Web, and you have decided to become the best racer on the whole Net,” explains the synopsis. “However, you are aware that the Web is not a place for the faint of the heart. Several people try to harm those connected through the net by controlling their enormous Ultra Viruses.”

Being released as a digital-only title, Neon Hat will also be compatible with PlayStation 5.

Neon Hat

Neon Hat is joining a strong lineup of PlayStation VR releases this summer. Tiles confirmed for July include Synth Riders and Winds & Leaves, with August currently featuring nDreams’ Fracked and Traffic Jams. Plus there’s Vertigo Games’ After the Fall which doesn’t have a specific date yet.

PlayStation Talents and Entalto Studios will be launching Neon Hat for PlayStation VR on 29th July 2021. Check out the new trailer below to see the videogame in action and for further PlayStation VR updates, keep reading VRFocus.

PlayStation Talents’ 2021 PS5 Lineup Includes VR Title Neon Hat

Neon Hat image1

Sony Interactive Entertainment Spain (SIE Spain) PlayStation Talents programme for indie developers has seen several virtual reality (VR) titles through its doors including Intruders: Hide & Seek and Do Not Open. Today sees a new batch of videogames revealed for the 2021 accelerator including a PlayStation VR title, Neon Hat.

Neon Hat

Currently, in early development by indie team Entalto Studios, the few details released so far offer a very Tron-like, cyberpunk world where players can: “Run, jump and fly over Nueva Berria’s cyberspace making your way in a world controlled by huge corporations. Glide through the air powered by your own hands and surf the web at breathtaking speeds. Information is the most valuable asset in Neon Hat world, find the highest bidders in this frantic arcade where nothing is what it seems.”

By the sounds of it, in this digital realm you’ll have enhanced abilities to explore a sprawling city buying and selling information, possibly stealing it from those mega-corporations. In one image hands do appear so Neon Hat could well support PlayStation Move, helping make that feeling of flying as immersive as possible.

Other than that, no further narrative details have been released, so it’s unclear if Neon Hat will be a linear adventure of give you a bit more freedom to uncover the cyberpunk landscape.

Neon Hat

While the announcement does note that all these PlayStation Talents projects will be PlayStation 5 exclusives for 2021, the likelihood is that with Neon Hat being a PlayStation VR title it’ll be PlayStation 4 compatible. Or there’s a very outside chance that if Neon Hat is a PS5 videogame, they’ve just revealed a PlayStation VR 2 project – but that is a long shot.

In any case, at least this adds another videogame to PlayStation VR’s roster for the year. Owners have a few to look forward to in 2021, like Winds & Leaves from Trebuchet, Joy Way’s Stride, puzzler Maskmakerteam-based FPS Solaris Offworld Combat and Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife. As further details for Neon Hat are released, VRFocus will let you know.
