Pokemon Go Dev Is Now Making An NBA AR Game

The next project from Pokemon Go developer Niantic is an NBA AR game.

NBA All-World is currently in development for mobile AR and looks very similar to the studio’s past projects. You’ll head out into the real world to find basketball courts dotted on a virtual map (which, to be clear, are random locations, not real-world courts). From there you’ll meet players to engage in 1 v 1 matches. Check out a teaser trailer below.

NBA All-World AR Game Announced

Master the game and you can top local leaderboards, plus there are players to collect by beating them in matches. For now, the game’s expected to roll out on both iOS and Android in the coming NBA season.

There’s plenty more on the way from Niantic right now, including the company’s own IP, an AR pets game called Peridot. The company also recently launched a visual positioning system for ‘Global Scale’ AR experiences. Further down the line, though, the company’s teased possible AR hardware that could bring its apps to a new level.

The NBA, meanwhile, has been heavily involved with immersive technologies of late. Back in May, the company teamed up with Meta to launch a new experience within Horizon Worlds, too.

Horizon Worlds Launches Official NBA Lane Experience

Horizon Worlds’ next tie-in experience is with the NBA.

A new NBA Lane world can be found under the Events tab of Meta’s social creation tool, and will be available until June 30. Within the world you can explore NBA-themed environments and shoot hoops with friends. There’s also a low gravity dunk contest with judges that rank your performance, a huge virtual screen with highlight clips and a trophy room where you can find the new Larry O’Brien trophy.

Horizon Worlds NBA Trophy

This is Horizon Worlds’ second major brand tie-in after launching a Wendy’s world earlier in the year. Currently the app is only available in the US and Canada as a beta, though Meta is planning to open up to more territories in the future. Last week Meta announced that it was bringing its other Horizons experience, Venues, into the Worlds app and retiring the original.

Yesterday Meta also introduced a new feature for the experience, the Asset Library. This essentially gives users quick access to a library of over 100 pre-made items and objects made by Meta staff and some community members. More assets will be added over time.

Rec Room Teams With NBA For Branded Accessories From All 30 Teams

Rec Room is stepping up its efforts to tie-in with other properties with NBA-themed shirts and accessories available for all 30 teams.

Throughout the rest of the National Basketball Association 2022 post-season fans can add to their Rec Room avatars shirts and accessories from any pro team. Rec Room also has some NBA-themed spaces and activities added to the cross-platform multiplayer service.

A new NBA Experience is part of Rec Room’s lobby throughout the 2022 post-season where players can show off trick shots.

Rec Room is in a race against Meta and Roblox for mindshare among creators who can build cross-platform worlds with built-in tools. Rec Room recently shared that they have roughly 3 million monthly VR active users, mostly on Quest 2, while Meta’s Horizon Worlds recently partnered for a similar avatar program with the NFL during the Super Bowl and recently turned on payment tools for some creators in a limited test. Meta is also planning to build a version of its service that can run directly on the Web while Rec Room is already available on Android, iOS, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, PC via Steam, and Oculus Quest.
