Contagion VR: Outbreak Escapes Onto PlayStation VR Today

Developer Monochrome Inc. launched its zombie survival experience Contagion VR: Outbreak onto Steam Early Access in the summer of 2018, receiving a ‘mostly positive’ response from gamers in the process. Today, it’s the turn of PlayStation VR owners to tackle the zombie apocalypse.

Contagion VR Outbreak

A purely single-player experience, Contagion VR: Outbreak drops you right in the middle of the carnage, with the undead running (stumbling) amock. Rather than one solitary storyline to follow the gameplay puts you in the shoes of several characters via found journals. These journals unlock a playable single-player focused mission that explains their victories, defeats, and ultimate outcome in the apocalypse.

Naturally, to stay alive in a zombie apocalypse you need to scavenge, craft useful items and arm yourself to the teeth. You’ll have to leave the confines of your safe house and explore the world, stockpiling resources whilst hopefully making it back in one piece to create items at the workbench. Weapons are also fairly plentiful with pistols, shotguns, rifles and bows available to kill at range. Should any zombie great too close then you can switch to a melee weapon to smash a few skulls in. The only problem, melee weapons have a durability factor, so they can break if you’re not careful.

Aside from the story mode, Contagion VR: Outbreak also offers a free-roaming Survival Mode for those players who want a challenge. Here you need to be extra careful if you’ve collected or crafted some awesome equipment, if you die then everything you carry is lost.

Contagion VR Outbreak

Contagion VR: Outbreak for PlayStation VR launches later today. The PC VR version is still in Early Access currently, with Monochrome Inc. yet to confirm an official launch date. That can’t be too far away if the console version is now ready.

The new title will be going up against Vertigo Games’ Arizona Sunshine which originally launched in 2017. Last month saw   Arizona Sunshine – The Damned DLC arrive across all platforms, extending the storyline offering a prequel to the original. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Contagion VR: Outbreak, reporting back with all the latest updates from the developer.

Zombie Shooter Contagion VR: Outbreak Releases Development Roadmap

The zombie apocalypse is a popular setting for videogames, perhaps because it gives players the chance to indiscriminately shoot everything in sight, while offering plenty of potential for drama, not to mention the vast amounts of gore. Developer Monochrome Inc have chosen this as the setting for co-operative multiplayer shooter Contagion VR: Outbreak.

Contagion VR: Outbreak is a first-person shooter that has been built exclusively for virtual reality (VR). The player is immersed in a world undergoing the initial stages of a zombie outbreak, forced to try and survive as the world around them is horrifyingly changed.

Players can take on the role of one of several characters to experience their stories as they try and fight through the end of the world as they know it, scavenge for resources and explore the environment in an attempt to survive.

There is a single-player mode, PvP competitive multiplayer, all of which have various weapons available for players to choose from with a co-operative multiplayer planned for later in the year.

The title is currently in Early Access, and the development team have laid out a road map so Steam users can check out what is due to be added to the title.

The road map lays out a month-by-month plan for content that the developers are planning on introducing. The plans for August include the addition of a proper tutorial, slot saving, localisation setup and various performance optimisations.

September should see more missions added to the titles, along with an expanded Free roam mode, the co-operative multiplayer mode also being added, character customisation options, new weapons and more menu options.

The currently available road map lists intended progress up until December 2018. Work on the Early Access version is planned to continue for roughly twelve months, giving the team plenty of time to add new content and optimise everything. This would put the full release date at the end of June or start of July 2019.
