Cave Digger Team VRKiwi Reveal Multiplayer Adventure Crystal Raiders VR

Crystal Raiders VR

Whilst Finnish developer MeKiwi and its publishing arm VRKiwi are best known for virtual reality (VR) title Cave Digger, augmented reality (AR) studio Nieko has been working with the latter on its latest project. This week the pair have revealed Crystal Raiders VR, a multiplayer adventure due for release later this year.

Crystal Raiders VR

Crystal Raiders VR will be an action-adventure videogame where you can explore a medieval castle which is split into 20 levels either on your own or in co-op with three other players. Set to offer a mixture of combat and puzzle-solving, the studio notes this will be a family-friendly experience:
“All game content is suitable for children, with a friendly environment and cruelty-free combat.”

As a role-playing game (RPG) experience you’ll be able to discover treasures, artifacts, and useful weapons to aid the quest plus avatar customisation options with various character models, haircuts, clothing, and accessories. The further into the castle you go the more unlockable cosmetics you find.

To aid the multiplayer aspect of Crystal Raiders VR it’ll feature its own social platform known as “Camp Square”. The kick-off point for any quest, you’ll be able to chat with other players as well as competing in specific activities for leaderboard spots.

Crystal Raiders VR

Crystal Raiders VR will be apart of the Steam Game Festival in February, with a PC VR release currently slated for Spring 2021. It’ll support Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Valve Index headsets.

As VRFocus reported back in October, MeKiwi is currently working on Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder with the team saying they want to keep the original’s feel whilst providing a different experience with big new features. An Early Access release is expected in either Q2 or Q3 202. For further updates on both videogames keep reading VRFocus.

Cave Digger Tunnels Into PlayStation VR for US and European Customers

After a PC release in 2018 on Steam for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality, Cave Digger then arrived for PlayStation VR during last week’s hectic Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2019, but only for UK customers. Today, developer MeKiwi has announced a wider global rollout for European and North American gamers.

Cave Digger

As the name implies, Cave Digger is a virtual reality (VR) mining videogame that has a few surprises in store. Starting with the ever trusty pickaxe, you head down the mine shaft to dig for new wealth, looking to find all sorts of riches in the rocks. The more you dig the more you’ll be rewarded, which in turn can be spent on new tools.

You’ll be able to upgrade your pickaxe and make it automatic, an energy efficient saw, or if you’re really successful the chaos gauntlet, which is powered by powerful gems found in the cave.

And there are mysteries down in the dark, depending on how you play there are eight endings to uncover some far more devious than others. Additionally, there’s a competitive mode to test your skills against other players.

Cave Digger: Riches

“We are very happy to reach players in each store, now in PSVR too, but our excitement doesn’t end here!” said Mekiwi’s COO Jani Kaipainen in a statement. “We are working on a very big expansion to feed the hunger of quality VR content hunters out there and now is a great time to catch this game and get familiar with it!”

Mekiwi has confirmed that the expansion will be free for all Cave Digger owners, regardless of platform. It should lengthen gameplay by several hours whilst adding new mechanics and ways to play the experience. There’s no date just yet for the update release.

Cave Digger is out today for PlayStation VR in North America and Europe. For further updates keep reading VRFocus.
