The Biggest VR Releases Of The Week Of 11/11/18

The Biggest VR Releases Of The Week Of 11/11/18

November, as a whole, is really shaping up to be a big month for new VR releases. There have been some solid new games and plenty of surprising new experience apps to try.

If you’re playing catch up, you can check out last week’s list here and our full list of everything dropping in November right here.

Crow: The Legend, from Baobab
Price: Free (Rift, Go, Gear VR)

Synopsis from our review:

A lot of people talk about how VR is an empathy machine, but when the snow comes and you just made life harder for a bunch of cute little animals it can force you to feel not just for them but the seasons themselves. I found it so much fun to change the seasons, do you think that’s why the seasons change? I felt that question while wearing the headset, but it wasn’t until writing this article I figured out how to put it into words.

Therein is the true magic of Crow: The Legend.

Runes: The Forgotten Path, from StormBorn Studio
Price: $24.99 (Rift, Vive, Windows VR)

Were a fan of The Wizards? Then you’re probably gonna dig Runes: The Forgotten Path. Similarly, it’s a single-player magical action adventure game. One thing that sets Runes apart from other games of this type though is that it’s more heavily based on hand movements creating “runes” than others.

You can read our old preview from mid-last year here.

Age of Sail, from Google Spotlight Stories
Price: Free (Rift, Vive)

Synopsis from our review:

Directed by Oscar-winner, John Kahrs, Age of Sail is a 12 minute VR short that you can see as a 2D movie or inside a mobile VR headset, but it’s best viewed via a Steam download on Rift and Vive. It’s a piece about the changing of the guard and finding a place for yourself in the new world, two topics that it explores with an on-the-nose metaphor and a touch of warming affection.

Megalith Beta, from Disruptive Games
Price: Free (PSVR)

Megalith is now available for free in Open Beta for everyone with a PSVR. You can download it right now from the PSN Store. The beta period is expected to last for “a couple months” and will contain access to two of the five planned “Titans” or hero characters. Every week the rotation of access will change so that all Open Beta players have access to the same assortment at any given time.

Read more in our our preview.

Echo VR, from Ready at Dawn
Price: $9.99 (Rift)

Echo Combat provides a new twist on the zero-gravity gameplay first seen in Echo Arena and Lone Echo. You’ll take part in online battles in which you’ll seek to gun down other players as you throw yourself across arenas, protecting objectives and looking to destroy enemy targets.

The game’s going to launch with an assortment of new maps and weapons. Oculus also revealed that it’s bumping team sizes from 3v3 to 4v4 and confirmed that the game will feature a new progression system in which you’ll gain experience in public matches to unlock new cosmetic customization options. Oculus says Ready At Dawn will continue to support the game throughout 2019, so expect even more content down the line.

Read our previews for more details here and here.

Spheres, from Novelab and CityLights
Price: $9.99 (Rift)

Synopsis from our hands-on:

Spheres is a short VR experience about the vastness of space and simulating the sights and sounds of two blackholes colliding. To date, it’s the first VR experience I’ve had that replicates a small portion of what it feels like to watch a Christopher Nolan film. I was immediately reminded of Interstellar. It’s haunting, beautiful, and breathtaking.

Megalith Beta Now Live, New Gameplay Trailer Revealed

One of the more interesting titles announced for PlayStation VR in 2017 was Disruptive Games’ titanic brawler Megalith. With a released date set for January 2019, today has seen the rollout of a free beta alongside the first official gameplay footage.

In Megalith, players can choose from a selection of Titans to take into battle in teams of two, with the purpose being to destroy opponents using a range of special abilities. These can be used on their own or made even more effective when coordinated with an ally.

This isn’t just about Titans fighting each other. Teams need to help their minions attack opponents defences, destroying walls and towers to aid their forces as much as possible.

For the beta there will be five Titans to choose from, Tundra, Cipher, Taur, Aurora, and Hunter. Only two will be available at one time, with the selection changing each week. Players will find their characters may differ from others to ensure varied gameplay during the beta phase.

The five starting Titans and their abilities are:

  1. Tundra: Frost Blast (Primary), Ice Shield, Ice Shackles, Permafrost, Ice Age (Ultimate)
  2. Cipher: Bounce Launcher (Primary), Boomerang, Tether Pull, Rupture, Tracker Orbs (Ultimate)
  3. Taur: Swipe (Primary), Charge, Acid Spit, Rage Mode, Stoneblock (Ultimate)
  4. Aurora: Ethereal Burst (Primary),Chain Lightning, Ion Shell, Tempest, Wrath Of Heaven (Ultimate)
  5. Hunter: Crossbow (Primary), Arrow Volley, Explosive Arrow, Talisman, Solar Beam (Ultimate)

In addition to the beta, Disruptive Games has made the videogame available to pre-order. For those that do order the title, they’ll be able to choose from any of the five titans at any time during the beta. Other pre-order bonuses include:

  • Bonus: Avatar pack including the starting five Titans.
  • Bonus: One DLC Titan granted when the game releases.
  • Exclusive: Epic skins for each of the starting five Titans when the game releases.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Megalith, reporting back with further updates as announcements are made.

PSVR’s Overwatch Contender, Megalith, Gets A Free Beta Today

PSVR’s Overwatch Contender, Megalith, Gets A Free Beta Today

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Disruptive Games’ promising PSVR-exclusive shooter, Megalith. Turns out you’ll actually be able to play it from today.

The hero shooter, which looks a heck of a lot like a VR version of Blizzard’s Overwatch, is getting a free open beta today. Said beta is set to last “for the next couple of months” and will feature a weekly rotation of heroes (or Titans) for you to choose from. The game works much like a MOBA, tasking both teams with protecting their bases and destroying the enemy’s equivalent. We last got a look at it during E3 2018 and we thought it held a lot of promise. It looks like the beta will be US-only for now (the blog post announcing it only appears on the US PlayStation site).

You’ll be able to choose from two of the five heroes every week, whilst other players will have a different selection to ensure matches are varied. Characters include the icy Tundra, a Hunter class that gives us Bloodborne vibes, a divine warrior named Aurora, a monster named Taur and an ancient sentinel named Cipher. Each comes with its own abilities that must be used in tandem with the rest of your team to pave the way to victory.

However, if you pre-order the game during the beta you’ll be given immediate access to each hero at your choosing (so you’re essentially buying the game straight up). You’ll also be given an avatar pack for your PlayStation profile, exclusive skins for these five heroes upon full launch, and a DLC hero when the game launches. The full game launches on January 6th.

PlayStation VR PVP Title Megalith Has A Release Date

The team at Disruptive Games have been hard at work on their upcoming virtual reality (VR) title about Titans battling it out for control of the Earth for some time now but finally Megalith has a release date. Coming to the PlayStation VR, players will be able to jump in and experience thrilling battles as massive characters unleashing powerful abilities go head-to-head to walk away with victory.

Though players will feel a sense of power as they unleash their titan abilities in this player-versus-player (PVP) hero shooter title, each Titan is an equal match meaning mastering their moves and abilities will be important. Teamwork will make the battle easier as there are objects to be achieved to win the battle but the open battlefield does mean that players will need to keep an eye out for the enemy.

Featuring destructible environments, nowhere is safe as the enemy could come crashing through a wall to land a surprise attack on you and your team. Thanks to a free locomotion system players will find that moving around the virtual world and unleashing their wrath of destruction will be as easy as it is fun.

Megalith

When checking out the title at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018, the team at Disruptive Games commented saying: “We love playing online games and have spent many years crafting multiplayer experiences before forming Disruptive, Megalith is the culmination of everything we have learned along the way. We have been blown away by the potential of VR gaming, and are excited to be pushing the platform as it evolves.”

The official release date for Megalith is set for January 8th, 2019 with a free trial version being made available available on November 13th, 2018 alongside a discounted digital pre-order exclusively through the PlayStation Store, it has been revealed. By pre-ordering at the PlayStation Store players will immediately unlock all Titans available during the trial, exclusive epic skins and an Avatar pack for each of the starting five Titans, along with one additional DLC Titan included at launch.

As PlayStation VR owners prepare themselves for battle against other titans, VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest on Megalith in the future so make sure to stay tuned for more.

PSVR Arena Brawler ‘Megalith’ Heads into Open Beta Today, Gameplay Trailer Here

Megalith, a first-person arena brawler from Disruptive Games, is slated to arrive on PSVR on January 8th, 2019. Both pre-order availability and a free trial are landing on the PlayStation Store today, November 13th.

Update (November 12th, 2018): On top of releasing a slick new gameplay trailer, Disruptive Games speaks a little more about what to expect for Megalith in a PS blogpost, specifically detailing what Titans you’ll be able to play during the multi-week open beta. Players who haven’t pre-ordered will have access to two random Titans per week, while players who have pre-ordered will have access to all five immediately and a few other goodies including ‘Epic’ skins for each of the starting five Titans when the game releases.

The original article explaining the game’s core concepts follows below the Titans’ character sheets:

Original Article (October 10th, 2018): We went hands-on with Megalith back at this year’s E3, and the two matches we played showed some real potential for fun, fast-paced co-op brawling. Like most MOBAs (multiplayer online battle arena), it’s a classic rush to attack the other team’s base, send out and direct tiny armies of soldiers, and destroy dangerous towers along the way.

Disruptive Games, a studio founded by Insomniac Game alumni,  has their work cut out for them in making sure each character is correctly balanced, as you can choose from several ‘Titans’, each with their own unique abilities, power, and locomotion speeds.

Digital pre-order of the game will unlock all Titans available during the trial, exclusive skins and an Avatar pack for each of the starting five Titans, and one additional DLC Titan included at launch.

There’s no word on when/if other platforms will see support.

Hands-On: Conjure Strike Is A Team-Based VR Hero Shooter With MOBA Elements

Hands-On: Conjure Strike Is A Team-Based VR Hero Shooter With MOBA Elements

When I played Megalith at E3, it was a little bit of a revelation for me. Intuitively I knew that hero shooter style games, or rather action games that pit players against each other in an arena and let them pick from a host of characters each with vastly different powers, would be a good fit for VR, but I’d never tried one. Now with Conjure Strike, another team-based VR shooter with objective-based game modes, I’m convinced this style of VR game is here to stay.

The small development team at The Strike Force have done a great job of boiling down the core principles of what makes games like Overwatch and even MOBAs such as League of Legends so fun and popular and then doubled down on those ideas for Conjure Strike.

You can see a full match I recorded while playing with the developers yesterday right here:

Right now the game has three modes, each of which are played on a map dedicated to that mode only, four classes, and four different powers per class. All of the matches are played out in 2v2 settings and offer a lot of really fast-paced action. The two game modes I tried were an assault/defend mode similar to Overwatch’s payload or Echo Combat, as well as a King of the Hill mode that felt more like a MOBA with minion turrets auto-spawning and each team controlling a base.

Personally, I enjoyed the assault/defend mode a lot more (which is shown in the gameplay video above). The map was much larger and more elaborate with various different elevations and points of cover, whereas the king of the hill map felt very claustrophobic and was extremely difficult to win on if you didn’t capture the initial point at the very start.

I tried out a few of the different classes, such as the newly introduced melee-based class that requires you to actually punch with the Oculus Touch controllers to attack, or the range-based hunter class that shoots a rifle-style gun and gets a powerful sword slash ultimate ability.

Those were all fine and dandy, but I absolutely wreaked havoc as the Elementalist. That class’ default attack is an orb that explodes on contact for AoE damage and it also gets a powerful channel beam and an ice orb that freezes enemies. As someone that enjoys playing as Pharah in Overwatch, I’m a sucker for a good, fun AoE-focused ranged character.

The art style doesn’t really do much for me, but its simplicity likely means that it’s easy for the developers to rapidly create new content in the future. I vastly prefer the more detailed style of Megalith, to cite another VR game, or any other hero shooter I’ve tried honestly. It doesn’t look bad, it just doesn’t feel as polished and articulated as it could. Luckily the exciting gameplay and tense team dynamics more than make up for it.

With over two months left to go until launch, most of the work going on right now is play-testing and balancing. When I picked the Elementalist I noticed it was very easy to take out enemies on the other team if they didn’t have shields or at least another Elementalist to provide a counter with big damage threats.

Other classes like support roles and healers are in the works too, as well as new game modes and maps, so it certainly seems like the kind of game that could very well find a good amount of post-launch support if the community rallies around it enough. Since it’s entirely multiplayer focused, having a healthy population is going to be crucial.

Conjure Strike is currently available in Early Access on the Oculus Home Store for Rift. When it launches later this year, tentatively late September, that launch will also happen on Steam to include Vive support and cross-platform play  between storefronts as well.

Let us know what you think of the game so far down in the comments below!

Fight Your Way To Greatness In Megalith

After its Paris Games Week debut in 2017, Disruptive Games’ Megalith made it onto VRFocus’ ‘The Best PlayStation VR Games Coming in 2018‘ before seemingly disappearing with no further mention of the title. That was rectified for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018, being part of a sizable roster for PlayStation VR at the event. Naturally, VRFocus got some hands-on time with the experience which Nina has detailed in a new video.

Megalith

For those that haven’t heard of Megalith before, Disruptive Games’ first virtual reality (VR) title is an action packed shooter that puts you inside giant fighting Titans. The goal is simple, defeat other titans using an array of massive firepower to achieve the goal of becoming a god.

These battles aren’t single, solitary PvP fights to the death, as Nina points out it’s about teamwork as well because there are objectives that can be achieved in order to win. With big open fields of battle, the environments are destructible so there’s nowhere to hide. Megalith also employs a free locomotion system for ultimate manoeuverability and strategy options.

“We love playing online games and have spent many years crafting multiplayer experiences before forming Disruptive,” states the team. “Megalith is the culmination of everything we have learned along the way. We have been blown away by the potential of VR gaming, and are excited to be pushing the platform as it evolves.”

Megalith

As Nina found out whilst playing against Disruptive Games being a Titan isn’t all its cracked up to be, definitely proving that Titans aren’t all powerful – or indestructible – when faced off against their own kind.

Megalith might be a timed exclusive for PlayStation VR but as yet, Disruptive Games has yet to official state a date for the release of the multiplayer. When that does happen, VRFocus will bring you the latest news on this eagerly awaited title.

Megalith Is A Fun Hero Shooter Meets MOBA Hybrid, Now In Open Beta

E3 2018 Hands-On: Megalith Is A Fun Hero Shooter Meets MOBA Hybrid

Update (11/13/18): Megalith is now available for free in Open Beta for everyone with a PSVR. You can download it right now from the PSN Store. The beta period is expected to last for “a couple months” and will contain access to two of the five planned “Titans” or hero characters. Every week the rotation of access will change so that all Open Beta players have access to the same assortment at any given time.

However, if you pre-order the game, you’ll unlock access to all five in the Open Beta right away, as well as an avatar pack, a free DLC character post-launch, and exclusive “Epic” skins for each Titan. For our preliminary impressions from E3, read on below.

Original (6/19/18): VR does a few, specific things really, really well. One of those things is help players fulfill power fantasies. When I play Robo Recall, I feel like an action movie star that’s got skill of the same caliber as the likes of John Wick. When I play Archangel: Hellfire I really feel like I’m piloting an ultra-powerful mech with rockets and lasers. And now, when I play Megalith, I feel like a Goddess of Thunder.

During my hands-on demo of Megalith at E3 last week, I took control of Aurora, who is a lightning-based hero that can shoot lightning bolt, cast out giant electric orbs, summon storm clouds, and even fly up into the air to rain down enough bolts of lightning to make even Zeus proud.

Megalith, as we learned last year, is coming to PSVR soon and aims to bring a nice blend of first-person shooter gameplay with the overall flow of a MOBA. That means that while your particular hero will be controlled much like it would be in other first-person action games, you’ll have a base to defend, towers to protect, and minions at your side. All that other stuff is automated though so you can focus on the action.

Disruptive Games captured the gameplay video above, which shows an E3 attendee playing as Cipher, the fire-based hero. I fought against him partnered up with a duplicate Aurora as the enemy, and with Taurus, a melee hero, on my team. Matches in Megalith are designed to be 2v2, which sounds small, but the action was anything but slow-paced.

For my demo Taurus and I spawned back at our base and immediately set off for the middle of the map where much of the action takes place. Our side had two different entry points, both of which were flanked by two turret towers. We easily won the match and I think only one of our four towers ever even took damage.

Movement in Megalith is similar to the smooth locomotion from Skyrim on PSVR. You point in a direction using the Move controller and then hold down the trigger to move that way. Face buttons do things like rotate your orientation for turning and activate your different abilities.

When you activate an ability it doesn’t automatically get set off, but instead you then aim your right hand and pull the trigger to use it. If you don’t have an ability equipped at that time, you’ll just use your character’s default attack.

For Aurora, her default was a medium-range lightning burst. It did good damage if I could get within range, but getting too close left me vulnerable to nasty burst attacks from Cipher and the enemy Aurora. Her abilities involved a bigger, much longer range sustained lightning blast, an electric orb, and a thunder cloud.

My favorite combo was to hit them with an orb, which stunned them in place, and then follow that up with a storm cloud above their head for some hefty damage over time. My Taurus teammate could also slam the ground to create a rock wall and trap enemies, which also combined well with the storm cloud.

Aurora’s ultiamte sent her flying up into the sky, where I could flip the controller over up at my shoulder (raising it like Zeus would a bolt of lighting) and pull the trigger to shoot bolts down rapidly. These did a ton of damage and if I timed it well I could easily wipe the other team with a single ultimate.

Combining hero powers and understanding the lanes of approach on maps will be a huge part of Megalith’s meta game strategy. Minions aren’t much to worry about in small numbers, but in large groups they can absolutely wreak havoc quickly.

I’m eager to try out all of the different heroes in Megalith since they’re all so different. Keeping game sizes small (just 2v2) should help make sure finding a match isn’t too hard, but the game will also need good AI and a decent amount of single player or co-op content to really be successful.

Following Microsoft’s more traditional (and VR-free) E3 presentation, Sony’s event got off to an unusual start, switching venues and generally avoiding the ‘on stage’ style of delivery. But perhaps more surprising was the distinct lack of PSVR information within the main showcase. Aside from Trover Saves the Universe and a brief montage, the focus was entirely on non-VR, blockbuster titles. In this article we consider the significance of this decision.
