Megalith – Disruptive Games

Welcome back to a busy VRecap! Missed the VR headlines over the past 7 days? You’ve come to the right place…
This week we’re talking Facebook updates, ad the company held another earnings call. Mark Zuckerberg himself delivered some encouraging news about sales of the Oculus Quest, which has been routinely out of stock for the past few months. Stock is becoming more widely available though, so keep an eye out.
Elsewhere we dive into a next Beat Saber extension that adds an AI track maker to the game. It uses YouTube songs to convert music into maps, so you can finally try some of your favorites inside VR’s biggest game. It doesn’t work especially well with absolutely every song, though, so choose carefully.
Finally we have some smaller game updates. There’s news on both Echo VR on Quest and Lone Echo II on Rift. Also Cloudhead Games popped up to provide an update on Pistol Whip VR.
Over in releases, Cortopia’s Down The Rabbit Hole finally hits PSVR and Rift and Quest owners can try their hand at VR pottery. For this week’s community comments, we’re looking at ???.
Finally there’s our competition. This week you have a chance to win the SteamVR version of hero shooter, Megalith! Enter in our Gleam competition embeded on this page.
Update: Disruptive Games recently announced on Twitter that Megalith will release on Steam for PC VR headsets next week on May 8th.
Original: After an initial open beta and then somewhat rocky launch on the PSVR platform, the VR MOBA and shooter hybrid Megalith is coming to PC VR via Steam.
After an open beta on PSVR later that year, the game launched exclusively for the same platform in early 2019. However, early players had some complaints about empty lobbies. This resulted in developers Disruptive Games launching a free trial that had the same features as the full game, but was restricted to only a few Titans, with the rest being locked behind the paywall of the full game. This was an attempt to get players into the game and try it out for free, while also potentially solving the empty lobby problem.
Now, a year and a bit later, Megalith is expanding onto Steam and PC VR headsets. The Steam version is ‘coming soon’ with no set release, but the Steam listing is already up. Currently, the page only lists HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows MR headsets as supported, with no mention of Valve Index support for now.
There’s no details on whether the PC VR version will follow the PSVR free trial model or whether it will simply be a full paid experience only. Likewise, there’s no word on potential crossplay with PSVR, which would definitely help with lobbies and maintaining a healthy player base.
Will you be checking out Megalith now that it’s on PC VR? Let us know in the comments.
Editor’s Note: This article originally published on March 5th, but has been updated with new information regarding the game’s upcoming release date.
Disruptive Games’ multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title Megalith has been available for PlayStation VR for just over a year now, allowing players to step into the shoes of titans to fight it out. It has now been revealed that Megalith will soon be coming to a new platform, Oculus Rift.
The studio revealed the news on Twitter, saying: “Megalith fans! Exciting news is upon us as we expand the battlefield to Steam. We are excited to bring this experience to a new platform with new fans and players! More info coming soon.”
While VRFocus would normally expect a Steam release to include several headsets such as Valve Index, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality currently only the Oculus Rift is listed. It’s great to hear that Megalith is being made available for more platforms but the big question is whether it’ll support cross-play between PC VR and PlayStation VR, a feature that would be vital for community growth.
Megalith is all about teamwork, where players are paired up to fight other teams of titans. There are five starting titans to choose from (Tundra, Cipher, Taur, Aurora, and Hunter), each having their own unique powers and abilities for particular strategic advantages. Powerful by themselves, these abilities become even more effective when combined with your teammates.
Battles must be carefully managed as you need to attack your enemy’s defences whilst protecting your own. And there’s no point being a titan if you don’t have minions to command. To help lead your forces into enemy territory you’ll need to destroy enemy walls and towers so they can then attack the base, with a few specialised siege minions aiding the assault.
When Disruptive Games reveals further details on the PC version of Megalith, VRFocus will let you know.
Megalith (2018), the first-person PSVR battle arena from Disruptive Games, now boasts a free demo that gives you a good chance to try out all of the game’s Titans before plonking down the cash for the full game.
In Megalith you play as a powerful Titan protecting your team’s base. Each Titan has their own special abilities and preferred range, making for an interesting study in balance. It’s not just head-to-head combat though; like in typical MOBAs Megalith has little minions that stream from each base which try to push ever forward by destroying defensive towers and walls along the way to victory.
Like in the game’s open beta, users looking to try Megalith for free will be given the choice of two Titans each week out of the possible five: Aurora, Cipher, Hunter, Taur, and Tundra.
The full game of course gives you free reign to pick whatever Titan you want, although a big benefit to the free trial is the ability to earn spendable gems to unlock skins, that along with all progress, comes with you when you buy the full game.
You’ll find the free trial on the game’s store page under ‘Free Demo’. Megalith has so far been very well received on the PlayStation Store, getting a solid [4.5/5] user rating.
Last week during the start of the year chaos that is CES 2019, Disruptive Games launched its PlayStation VR multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title Megalith. While the feedback has been positive, the studio is looking to improve certain aspects for players, revealing work on a trial version as well as additional updates.
As a lot of developers soon discover when dealing with online multiplayer videogames for virtual reality (VR), keep ing experience populated can be a struggle. Which is why Disruptive Games is working on a trial version to encourage more players over, it’ll be completely free and allow them to play with those who have bought the full version. They’ll also be able to earn in-game currency and unlock skins that will carry over to the full videogame if they chose to purchase it.
There is, of course, one small caveat to the free trial. Players will be restricted to a hero rotation system and won’t have full access to the Titans unless they purchase the title.
And for players who’ve already purchased Megalith, the studio is working on improving expansion Titan unlocks. Currently, Titans can only be purchased through the store but in a future update, they’ll become purchasable via earned in-game currency. Meaning players will have the choice of grinding towards a free Titan unlock or spending some cash to do it instantly.
Detailing all these changes in a Reddit posting, Disruptive Games went on to say: “We believe these upcoming changes will help reward players for their time investment as well open the gates for new players to experience Megalith. The ability to earn Thorn and Shade via earned currency will be released soon after the trial is deployed. We will share more information as we approach the release of these features.”
At the moment Disruptive Games has yet to give a concrete date regarding when the trial version will be released.
In Megalith, players can choose from a selection of Titans to take into battle in teams of two, with the purpose being to destroy opponents using a range of special abilities. However, the videogame isn’t just about Titans fighting each other. Teams need to help their minions attack opponents defences, destroying walls and towers to aid their forces as much as possible. When more information has been released, VRFocus will let you know.
Last week saw the launch of Megalith on PSVR. The first-person shooter (FPS) looks like a polished stab at the VR multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). That said we’ve already seen some concerns expressed about empty lobbies and DLC. Developer Disruptive Games is looking to fix that.
Taking to Reddit, the studio announced that Megalith will soon get two new features. The first is a free trial for the game. It will allow anyone to jump into the experience and start playing with full game owners. The only difference is that demo players won’t have access to all of the game’s playable characters, named Titans. They’ll need to purchase the game to unlock everyone. Still, this could be a good way to fill up lobbies and get people into matches faster.
An exact date for the demo hasn’t been announced.
Next up is DLC. Megalith launched with one piece of DLC already. It offered a new Titan, but you had to pay for it. In the future, though, Disruptive Games will be adding an update that allows players to spend in-game currency on new characters. You’ll still be able to buy them outright to avoid the grind but more determined players can put the work in to get them at no extra cost.
“We believe these upcoming changes will help reward players for their time investment as well open the gates for new players to experience Megalith,” the developer wrote. “The ability to earn Thorn and Shade [DLC characters] via earned currency will be released soon after the trial is deployed.”
Do these changes get you excited about the future of Megalith?
Welcome to the first round-up of new releases for the year (don’t judge me, there wasn’t anything released last week).
To be fair it’s not that big of a list this week, either. CES has been going on and some developers have got to tackle the January blues before we move onto bigger and better things. There are a handful of releases to look out for, though.
Still stuck in 2018? Our last list of releases can be found here. More of a futurist? Here’s our roundup of the biggest VR games coming this month.
Megalith, from Disruptive Games
Price: $29.99 (PSVR)
An Overwatch-like hero shooter in which you pick a ‘Titan’ and take to the battlefield. You have a team base to defend and an enemy base to destroy. Megalith is vibrant and inventive, though it remains to be seen if it will build up the kind of community needed to sustain itself.
Spuds Unearthed, from Gamedust
Price: $19.99 (Rift, Vive)
Well here’s something we can truly say we haven’t seen before. Spuds Unearthed has you creating and customizing an army of sentient potatoes which you’ll then pit against enemies in all-out war. It looks like that’s an exhaustive amount of customization options here, which could be the real joy of the game. This is an Early Access release for now.
Dede Korkut Chronicles, from Bond Digital
Price: $3.99 (Go)
This caught our eye. It’s a relatively polished-looking fantasy action game that pits you against werewolves and other nasties. If you’re a Go gamer than keep an eye out for it.
Every month we aim to round up each and every VR game release for you in one single place — this is January’s list. Don’t worry — we’ll continue highlighting the best ones at the end of each week too.
