‘Dreams’ PSVR Expansion Now in Final Development Stage, Suggesting Nearby Launch

Dreams (2020) launched out of Early Access on PS4 earlier this year, and while PSVR users have been patiently awaiting any news of the promised VR support, Media Molecule has stayed fairly mum on the subject. Now the studio’s creative director & co-founder Mark Healey says Dreams is currently undergoing its final stages before release.

Healey says in a recent tweet that the long-awaited PSVR support for Dreams is done “feature/content wise,” and is currently in the bug-fixing, quality assurance, and localization phases.

Although Healey can’t give up a launch date just yet, it’s an encouraging sign that PSVR support may be right around the corner.

Furthermore, Healey showed off an example of some content coming to the VR expansion, something he says is only one of the example content pieces that are designed to be dissected, remixed and used to create new things.

Although we aren’t sure when it’s set to launch, if the studio’s public Dreams trello board is anything to go by the VR expansion will come at some point after the 2.11 update, which is said to include a new ‘Welcome Garden Gameplay Pack’.

Launched into Early Access on PS4 late last year and later officially released in February 2020, Dreams is a content creation suite that not only lets you build your own games and experiences, but also freely share and play creations from others.

It’s been a long time coming for PSVR users, who’ve been promised a powerful VR creation tool and sharing platform, something that aims to provide a measure of openness to the comparatively locked-down PS4 console.

Media Molecule Says Dreams PSVR Support Now In QA/Bug Fixing Phase

Creative Director and Co-Founder of Media Molecule, Mark Healey, stated on Twitter that Dreams’s PSVR support is now in the bug fixing, localization and quality assurance phase of development, indicating that it’s quite close to release.

Healey posted a video of a new piece of content coming in the ‘VR update’ that shows a dynamically pulsating bed of lava, which will work with VR and non-VR content. A user replied to the tweet asking when we could expect VR support, and Healey had this to say:

Fingers crossed, not too long, I can’t say date, that will jinx it and I’ll get slapped, but we are done feature/content wise, in bug fixing/QA/Localisation etc now

We’ve heard a lot already about how Dreams’ PSVR support is forthcoming, but this new comment seems even more promising. With feature and content development finished, it’s now just down to polishing things off. This is still a lot of work, and doesn’t mean we’ll see the game in the immediate future, but it’s still a good sign that the VR update has moved into the final phase of development before release.

We believe that Dreams is the most important PSVR game on the horizon, so we’re very eager for the update to drop. If you want read more about what makes Dreams so special and how it actually works, check out Jamie’s breakdown from earlier this year.

PSVR 2 Controllers, Dreams VR Support & Win Ghost Giant on Quest! – VRecap

What’s cooking in the delicious stew that is the VR industry? Find out with this week’s VRecap!

It’s been a busy week, probably a little too busy for February. Can we ask that literally nothing happens next week to balance it out?

Anyway, our first story this week concerns a new patent from Sony. This time it’s for what looks like VR motion controllers with sensors for finger tracking. It looks very similar to what’s already been in other other VR controllers, so we’re hoping this might be a feature for PSVR 2. Not that we know PSVR 2 is happening, of course, because Sony seems determined to just not announce anything about its products anymore. WHERE IS THE PS5 SONY?!

Ahem, moving on. We’re also talking Dreams and developer Media Molecule assuring us the VR support isn’t far out. We’ll be using it to make a reality in which Sony announces the PS5.

Finally on the news front there’s a raft of HTC announcements including new Cosmos faceplates and even a new concept headset. Will any of these reveals help the company claim the top spot in the VR market? We’ll be keeping a close eye on them to find out.

Over to releases, where two anticipated Oculus Quest ports are in the spotlight. In fact we’re giving one of them, Ghost Giant, away right here in this post! This remains one of our favorite VR games, so make sure not to miss it. And, to wrap up, we’re going over your comments as per usual.

Media Molecule Reiterates Dreams PSVR Support ‘Soon’, Multiplayer Coming After

Last week, the long wait for the highly-anticipated PS4 release Dreams finally came to an end. After seven years of development, Dreams finally released on PS4 — however, we’re also still waiting on PSVR support. Just last week, the developers stated that PSVR support is “nearly done“. Now that’s been reiterated by Co-founder Mark Healey, along with some new details on upcoming online multiplayer modes.

Speaking to Video Games Chronicle, Healey responded to a question about whether players can expect Dreams to be supported for a similar length of time as it took to develop, which Healey confirmed would be the case “as long as [the game] gets some traction.” He then expanded further, stating that they consider the game to be more of its own platform than one individual game. “Releasing it is just one stop along the road really. We want to carry on supporting it. We’re currently working on VR, so we’re going to do a VR update with VR content.”

When pushed for details on an exact release window for PSVR support, Healey said, “Just as soon as possible. I’ll probably get in trouble if I try and say a date, but literally as soon as possible.”

Healey also stated that VR support is one of the most in-demand features that they’re working on at the moment, with the other being online multiplayer and the ability to make online multiplayer games. He stated that multiplayer support is “probably the next thing after [VR support] … we’ve got a community now and we’re trying to respond to them as much as possible, so sometimes they might have a bigger demand but [the biggest demands from the community] are currently VR and multiplayer online.”

He also confirmed that Media Molecule plans to release both free and premium DLC, but the addition of VR support is “just going to be an update.” However, content with a lengthier development process or content based on an another property, such as a LittleBigPlanet pack, will be paid DLC.

The interview goes quite in-depth into many other non-VR aspects of Dreams and its development — you can read it in full over at Video Games Chronicle.

PlayStation 4’s Dreams Arrives February 2020

Today saw Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) broadcast its fourth and final State of Play for 2019 and it was a little light on virtual reality (VR) content. One of the notable announcements came from Media Molecule and its highly anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive Dreams, with an official launch date now confirmed.

Dreams - Keyart (E3 2018)

Dreams entered an Early Access phase earlier this year, in an effort to grow not only the community but also showcasing the potential of the creative videogame. With the launch now only a couple of months away the team has also revealed a few new additions.

“We have also been working on a whole host of new things to inspire players at launch, including a totally new introduction to the game, a new season of tutorials, tool improvements, new game content and a feature-length game, titled Art’s Dream,” said Media Molecules’ Communications Manager, Abbie Heppe on the PlayStation Blog. “Art’s Dream was made by us to show the endless possibilities in Dreams; it crosses genres, features some amazing characters, and shows our love of music in a big way.”

When it comes to VR support Heppe revealed on Twitter that Dreams won’t support PlayStation VR at launch but work is still ongoing so it will definitely still happen at some point.

Dreams-PS4

While the core experience in Dreams is its creative mode allowing players to build and share their own videogame ideas, the title will also feature a story mode using the same tools available to the rest of the community.

Media Molecule will be launching Dreams on Valentines Day, 14th February 2020, for $39.99. If you’ve been part of the Early Access phase then you’ll be upgraded to the full version of Dreams via a downloadable update at no additional cost. When further details regarding VR compatibility is made available then VRFocus will let you know.

Dreams PSVR Support Won’t Happen At Full Launch

The long wait for Dreams PSVR support just got a bit longer.

Developer Media Molecule today confirmed that its anticipated PS4 creation suite won’t support Sony’s VR headset when the full game finally comes around. Communications Manager Abbie Heppe confirmed as much to Road to VR over on Twitter. This followed yesterday’s news that Dreams will soon be ending sale of its Early Access version.

In the tweet, Heppe assured that the team was planning to support PSVR ‘ASAP’.

We’ve been following Dreams with great intrigue for some time now. The game was announced years ago, with PSVR support confirmed at multiple points throughout development. The flat-screen version of the title allows you to make your own games and share them online. As we’ve seen over the course of Early Access, launched earlier this year, creators can make some stunning experiences.

We do know that the PSVR support will allow people to play games specifically made for the headset. Based on what we’ve played of the traditional version, this has a heck of a lot of potential.

At this point, though, we have to wonder if Dreams will get support for the original PSVR or if Media Molecule might be holding off until the release of the unannounced PSVR 2 on the PS5 console. PS5 is out next year and supports backwards compatibility. One would assume that the console’s increased power would certainly help Media Molecule implement solid VR support into the title.

For now we don’t have a release date for the full version of Dreams but, again, we wonder if it might be closer to the release of PS5. Are you excited to jump in and start making your own VR games with Dreams PSVR support? Let us know in the comments below!

Media Molecule: ‘Dreams’ PSVR Support Coming ‘as soon as possible’

Dreams, Media Molecule’s creation-focused game, launched out of Early Access lat week, but without the hotly-awaited addition of PSVR support. Although the studio has spoken very little about its plans to support PSVR in the preceding months, a Video Games Chronicle interview with studio co-founder Mark Healey reveals VR support for Dreams is coming down the bend—notably before multiplayer online support arrives.

Update (February 18th, 2020): Speaking to Video Games Chronicle, Mark Healey said the studio is “currently working on VR, so we’re going to do a VR update with VR content.”

Although there’s no official launch date yet for the dedicated update, Healey says it will arrive “[j]ust as soon as possible. I’ll probably get in trouble if I try and say a date, but literally as soon as possible.”

Critically, multiplayer support for Dreams—or rather the ability to create multiplayer online games and experiences—is slated to arrive after the PSVR update.

Update (February 11th, 2020): In response to UploadsVR’s Jamie Feltham, Media Molecule developer Martin Taylor says in a tweet that the team is “still working on it,” referring to the game’s long-awaited PSVR support.

There’s still no firm launch date for PSVR support, although we’re hoping it won’t be too far behind. Users who didn’t order the game whilst in Early Access will be able to grab the full game on February 14th.

Original Article (December 6th, 2019): Although somewhat confusing, Media Molecule announced that the last day you can purchase the Early Access version of Dreams will be December 8th, which is currently priced at $30.

There’s no official release date yet of the full version (see update), which we imagine would come with a slight price hike. It’s unclear what updates are planned in the interim, although the studio says that EA players will still be able to play Dreams after the 8th and will upgrade to the full version when it launches for no extra cost.

Media Molecule Communications Manager Abbie Heppe confirmed with Road to VR that Dreams definitely won’t support PSVR at launch, although it is still planned.

Launched into Early Access on PS4 back in April, we were a bit dismayed that the studio didn’t include its long-promised VR support to the list of features, however Dreams was admittedly in an early, and unfinished state.

Heppe says in a PS blog post that on the road to releasing the full version the studio will be adding a non-motion control scheme for the game, helping new players learn to create, more tutorials and how-to content for players, improving existing features like Community Jams, the Homespace and Imp Quests and adding more content, including their “first piece of Mm story-telling in Dreams.”

Dreams Early Access Won’t Include PlayStation VR Support

When it comes to anticipation and hype, one of the biggest videogames coming to PlayStation 4 that everyone seems excited for is Media Molecules Dreams. The title has been in development for almost six years and now it’s looking like a launch is finally nearing, with the studio the launch of Early Access for next month. However, PlayStation VR fans looking to take their Dreams into virtual reality (VR) will still have to wait.

Dreams-PS4

Media Molecule will be holding the limited Early Access from 16th April 2019, designed more for creators to test the software ahead of launch. Studio Director Siobhan Reddy has confirmed on PlayStation Blog that the core component of Dreams, the creation suite is now ready: “It won’t feature everything that the full release will have (our story mode being a big piece of that) but you’ll get our full tool set for creating, our interactive tutorials and arcade games, templates and additional content created by Media Molecule and access to what you, the CoMmunity, made during our Dreams Creator Beta.”

As for the VR side of things that is still coming, just not quite yet. “Dreams VR is not included in the initial Early Access offering,” Reddy comments. “It’s still planned for Dreams and we’re super excited for it. We’ll be sure to share more details about it as soon as we’re ready.”

For those that want to take part in Dreams Early Access it will only be available in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and all European territories initially. There’s no pre-ordering it, you’ll just have to pay £24.99 GBP/€29.99 EUR/$29.99 USD/ $39.99 CAD on 16th April. While Early Access is limited the studio does state it’ll be a big limit, although leaving it late to purchase isn’t advisable.

Dreams-PS4

Media Molecule’s previous titles include Little Big Planet and Tearaway with Dreams is looking to be its biggest videogame yet. As mentioned it will feature a single-player story mode for those players who just want an awesome looking videogame to enjoy, but the main draw will always be the creator mode – which Media Molecule uses to make the campaign.

There’s still no confirmation regarding when the fully finished version will be released when that happens VRFocus will let you know.
