MechWarrior 5 VR Mod Now Available In Beta

A few weeks back we reported on the reveal of a MechWarrior 5 VR mod that promised to let you experience mech combat inside a headset.

Now you can try it for yourself.

Creator KITT just uploaded the mod, called VRWarrior, to Nexus Mods, enabling support for both SteamVR and Oculus headsets. You will, of course, need to own the actual game to get it up and running, but there are extensive instructions for those that own it on Steam, the Epic Games Store, or the Windows Store. Check out a trailer from ragesaq below.

There are a few things to note. Firstly, the mod is still in beta and is missing some of the teased features, like letting you explore the hangar and other areas in VR. You also need to play with an existing control setup, as you can’t use VR motion controllers.

Elsewhere in the VR mod scene, we’re also patiently awaiting the arrival of a Resident Evil 2 and 3 VR mod that brings both games into first-person. While the install base for VR headsets remains fairly low compared to traditional consoles, mods like these are some of the only ways to experience big-budget games in VR.

MechWarrior5 VR mod

The virtual reality (VR) modding community has done well over the years to bring popular videogames into VR even though they weren’t made for the technology. This year has seen the likes of Doom3Quest arrive, with this weekend adding another to the list, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.

Built by a modder called KITT, the MechWarrior 5 VRWARRIOR mod is now available through Nexus Mods, compatible with the Steam, Epic Games Store and Windows/Xbox Store versions of the title. Using a PC VR headset players can now properly step inside the hulking great battle mechs, stomping around environments doling plenty of destruction.

There are some caveats to the VRWARRIOR mod as it only supports in-mech combat sections, not the outside sections like the Hanger or the MechLab for example. This isn’t bad considering the mod is free, plus the whole point of enjoying mech combat in VR is being sat inside a cockpit illuminated with all sorts of buttons and dials. Check out the gameplay video below by YouTuber Ragesaq to see the VR mod in action.

That’s not to say aspects like the 2D menus aren’t being looked at in the future. “The feasibility of getting every single 2d menu/option/aspect created into a VR user interface is still being determined,” an FAQ notes. It’s worth pointing out though, you’ll also have to use a mouse/keyboard/joystick/gamepad setup as the mod doesn’t support motion controllers.

As all the work is provided free, you can support creators like KITT through their Patreon accounts, helping keep the community thriving.

MechWarrior 5 arrived back in May 2021, developed by Piranha Games Inc. Offering a single-player campaign and online co-op features the title has been well received by players and critics alike. As VR enthusiasts continue to develop mods like this, VRFocus will keep you updated.

MechWarrior 5 VR Mod Nearing Release

A MechWarrior 5 VR mod is nearing release.

Developer KITT has been leading the work on the mod, which brings the full experience into headsets. Work is based off of code developer Piranha Games itself released for modders (including adding in base Unreal Engine 4 VR code upon request). Check out some early gameplay from streamer ragesaqvr here.

MechWarrior actually has an interesting history with VR. In 2016 its developer said the game was designed to support VR but, a few years later, the studio confirmed it didn’t have any plans for native integration. The full game launched in May of this year without any VR support to speak of.

The game sees players jump into giant war machines and stomp their way through levels either in single-player or with friends in up to four-player co-op. Mech games have always been a good fit for VR, with the cockpit view working perfectly to keep players immersed in the experience. This mod in particular is implementing a new take on zooming to keep shots both accurate and immersive, and lets you explore your base on-foot between missions, too.

For now the mod is in beta, but you can expect to hear more about a full release in the near future. Will you be checking out the MechWarrior 5 VR mod? Let us know in the comments below!

Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries Developer ‘Interested’ In VR, But ‘No Plans’ Right Now

Good mech games and VR go together like racing sims and wheel accessories — it just makes sense. But don’t hold your breath for VR support in MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, at least not yet.

Over three years ago back in 2016, MechWarrior 5 developer Piranha Games showed interest in VR support for its combat-focused mech simulator. Back then, the President of the company stated that it was “designed” to support VR and they actually held a single demo for the game’s VR support at and industry event leading up to release. A programmer even stated that “native VR support” was one of the reasons they picked Unreal Engine for the game. But now that release has come and gone on the Epic Games Store, there is no peep of VR support at all.

We reached out to the developer for comment on the topic and received the following statement from a spokesperson on behalf of Piranha Games:

“Officially, Piranha is still interested in VR as a platform, but no plans to consider implementation until next year.”

So that’s not a “No,” but it’s also not a “Yes!” either. My reading of this means that they’d love to get it working well without sacrificing resources for the core game, but it’s not a priority and if it does happen it won’t be for a while. That’s just my assumption on things, though.

Currently the top of the pile in terms of VR-focused design for a mech combat game is Vox Machinae, which has an elaborately intricate cockpit rife with interactions using tracked motion controllers. But even simple head-tracking support to play with gamepad, keyboard and mouse, or a flight stick-style setup would be better than nothing for VR and mech fans.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries released this week and is receiving mostly positive reviews across the board, sitting at a 75 average on Metacritic after 16 officially syndicated reviews, including an 81/100 from IGN.
