Matterport Enters Virtual Tour Production Partnership With Insta360

Virtual reality (VR) isn’t just about transporting you to fantastical, otherworldly locations dreamed up by creators, it just as easily has the power to take you wherever you want in the world. It was this ability that Matterport seized upon to create its VR tours for applications such as property. Today, Matterport has announced a new partnership with camera company Insta360 to make virtual tour creation even easier.

Insta360 One X

Using the new Insta360 ONE X camera – which was announced later last year – tour creators can capture property and then use Matterport’s AI-powered software to create an interactive 3D floor plan and walkthrough, complete with depth and square footage data.

“Today marks a huge step forward for 360 capture in real estate,” said Michael Shabun, Insta360’s Director of Marketing, North America in a statement. “Virtual tours used to be expensive, time-consuming and complex. Using the ONE X, anyone can create one with a few taps.”

A lot of Insta360’s cameras have been focused on the consumer market, apart from its very high-end professional device, the Insta360 Titan. The company is now trying to expand its focus to include more enterprise use cases such as Matterport’s. Additionally, Insta360 also announced upcoming integrations with a range of other popular virtual tour platforms, including iStaging, immoviewer, Cupix, VPiX and Kuula.

Insta360 ONE X Frontview

Insta360’s integration with Matterport is currently going through a beta phase, with a public release planned for March. If you already own an Insta360 ONE X you can request access to the beta today at matterport.com/register. In addition to the public launch, in March Matterport will introduce a new $9.99 USD-per-month subscription tier for their virtual tour software, designed to introduce ONE X users new to the platform.

The Insta360 ONE X is available for purchase priced at $399.95. The 5.7K resolution camera records in 30 FPS along with 50 FPS in 4K and 100 FPS for 3K video, has built-in stabilisation features and a slow-mo mode for those dramatic action sequences. The device also features an 18MP photo mode to capture images.

As Insta360 and Matterport continue their collaboration to make virtual tours easier and quicker to make, VRFocus will keep you updated on their progress.

Fire Investigators Are Now Using VR Photogrammetry Tech to Assess Damage to Homes

A house fire is a sickening reality, but when it’s finally time to clean up and tally losses, that’s where fire investigators come in. Now, forensic investigation firm Donan and 3D scanning company Matterport are partnering to bring fire investigators the tools to make highly detailed photogrammetry scans so they can review the situation from afar through a VR headset, desktop client, or mobile app.

Donan is bringing every fire investigator across the country a Matterport camera, and every Donan fire client the ability to view the resultant interactive 3D models. Matterport’s photogrammetry system is automated, allowing for the creation of virtual 3D models, accurate measurements, high-resolution 4K 2D photography, and floor plans.

According to a press statement, the scans will be included in their official documentation process for all structural fire losses, including tools for soot and smoke claims. Insurance adjusters can also use the scans to assess damages, and more easily write estimates for quicker claim settlement.

Notably, in the event of suspected wrongdoing, the scans can even be used in court to put the jury at the scene of the fire with the help of a VR headset, enhancing the available evidence in an arson case.

Since its founding in 2010, Matterport’s tech has mostly found a home in the real estate industry, providing their Pro2 3D camera series to real estate agents around the world so they can more accurately capture and show off properties to potential clients. In 2016, the company embarked on a mission to make the “world’s largest library of VR places” in their online gallery of publicly available 3D scans.

Check out an example scan on Donan’s website to see a fully interactive walk-through.

VR Scanning Company Matterport Gets New Investment

With usage of virtual reality (VR) in areas such as architecture and real estate undergoing growth, demand for services such as those provided by Matterport is high. In order to continue to meet this demand, Matterport has secured new investment from State Auto Labs.

Matterport has created a platform for creating accurate 3D models of real-world spaces, which can be viewed in VR for a variety of applications, including design, architecture and real estate. The new investment from State Auto Labs will enable Matterport to expand into the Insurance area.

A number of industries now utilise the technology created by Matterport. The company is now in a position to expand its reach into the insurance sector. A number of property owners and insurance professionals re turning to 3D immersive media to document and asses the condition of assets.

The advantage of Matterport’s system is that is can create an accurate model of a 3D real-world space that can provide a more complete, detailed and comprehensive level of documentation that would be possible using 2D photographs or drawings.

“We’re thrilled to partner with State Auto Labs to expand the reach of our industry-leading 3D reality capture platform within the insurance industry,” said Bill Brown, Matterport CEO. “State Auto is clearly at the forefront of bringing increased efficiency and transparency to the insurance industry, and we are proud to be aligned with this mission. In a relatively short amount of time, Matterport has positioned itself as an invaluable solution for insurance professionals and property owners by providing a more transparent, dimensionally precise means of documenting residential and commercial properties. Our technology can significantly aid in protecting a person’s most valuable assets, and this strategic investment will enable us to accelerate our growth in this important sector.”

“Matterport has the opportunity to revolutionize how property risks are underwritten and claims are handled in the insurance industry,” said Kim Garland, Senior Vice President, Commercial Lines & Managing Director of State Auto Labs. “We are delighted to work with Matterport as they extend their revolutionary technology to the insurance vertical, and are honored that they are the first investment of the State Auto Labs Fund.”

Matterport Opens Early Access to 3D Showcase SDK for Select Developers

3D media technology company Matterport, best known for its camera platform of the same name, has recently announced  that it is offering early access for select developers for its new 3D Showcase SDK, allows companies to create new applications using Matterport’s software.

Matterport 3D-showcase

Using the 3D Showcase SDK, developers will be able to create publicly available websites and apps, customising the user experience to their own specific needs.

“Developers have been eager to build on top of our platform for years, so we are excited to enable them to create new and exciting solutions for their respective industries,” said Damien Leostic, VP of Product at Matterport in a statement. “What sets Matterport apart is that we generate fully immersive True3DTM walkthroughs versus others who create 360 panoramic tours which sometimes, mistakenly, get referred to as 3D. True3DTM is distinguished by the 3D depth data that creates truly immersive experiences and enables developers countless possibilities to build on top of this experience.”

Aimed more towards the real estate, travel and hospitality, insurance, retail, architecture, engineering and construction industries, the software has already been tested by Multivista, a specialist in visual construction documentation. Multivista created Site-Walk 360°, allowing Matterport’s 3D models to be embedded into the Multivista platform, thus enabling Multivista customers to virtually walk through construction sites from anywhere in the world.

Matterport’s Immersive 3D VR Platform Gets Faster Space Capture and Google Street View Features

Matterport customers are about to get a few more features to enhance the speed and accuracy at which they can use the software. Matterport’s thousands of customers should find a few more business opportunities opening up soon, with faster space capture thanks to new camera firmware, and introduction of Google Street View publishing.

Both initiatives are currently in beta, but are expected to help customers in the restaurant, retail, travel, hospitality, real estate, architecture, construction and engineering industries.

We’ve recently seen Matterport help with Virtual Housing Spaces. The busy company have also been expanding their platform globally.

With the Google Street View publishing beta, Matterport users will easily be able to convert their Matterport 3D Space into an experience that can be exported and show up on Google Maps, Google Earth and Street View as panoramic photo tours, giving potential customers browsing the local area much more insight into the businesses in that area.

Matterport CEO Bill Brown believes this Google Street View publishing beta will enhance the value of Matterport to its existing customers, and simplify the publishing process; “Google Street View publishing and faster space capture are two of the many initiatives that greatly increase the value of Matterport for camera operators, as well as businesses that want to use Google to drive people to their websites. Matterport is the solution of choice for all types of businesses because our automation makes it easy for anyone to quickly capture a space and get a high-quality 3D environment. Now this content can be experienced as a Matterport immersive 3D environment on a business’ website and can also be used to published as a Google Street View experience on Google Maps, Google Earth, or mobile Street View.”

The software essentially automates and eases the process of creating and publishing panoramic photo galleries, all of which can be done with the Matterport camera and software. No additional hardware or software required – a relief for anyone who has previously had to use several cameras and additional editing to achieve a similar effect in the past.

And even the base process of creating a Matterport 3D Space will be easier than ever before, thanks to new firmware which speeds up the camera rotation, enabling the camera to scan 3D spaces in a fraction of the time it did previously.

The firmware update is of course free, and will work for all Pro2 and Pro Matterport cameras. The quality of images will remain unchanged. You can see the new firmware in action at the link below.

Matterport Team with roOomy To Develop Virtual Housing Spaces

Since virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) rose to prominence, there has been a steady rise in consumer demand for the technology for applications such as virtual representations of products, something that Matterport has been engaged in for real estate purposes. ~The company is now taking this idea a step further with help from 3D modelling company roOomy.

Matterport are working with roOomy to integrate Matterport’s existing immersive 3D platform with roOomy’s virtual staging technology to allow Matterport customers to virtually furnish spaces such as apartments or houses, to allow them to better visualise how the space will look as a home.

This system has benefits for property managers and real estate agents as well, allowing them to virtually stage an apartment or home and tailor it to each customer instead of using show homes, which can be costly, and removes a valuable space from the market for an extended period.

In addition, retailers such as Wayfair, Amazon or Houzz are featured on the roOomy platform and can offer items featured to buy or rent if customers decide they like how they look when viewed in the virtual space.

“Our mission at roOomy is to break down the visualization barriers that often accompany the home buying or renting process, while also making it easier and more enjoyable to shop for your new space when it’s time to move,” said Pieter Aarts, co-founder and CEO of roOomy. “We are the market leaders in virtual staging. This new collaboration with Matterport eliminates the many hurdles and extra steps that often come with physical staging and allows buyers and renters to see and feel an optimized rendition of the listing from anywhere.”

“Matterport is digitizing the world’s spaces, moving toward a day when any space can be shared or modified online via Web, mobile, VR, or AR. Our collaboration with roOomy is exciting as it demonstrates the extensibility of the Matterport platform. Enabling roOomy to build a virtual staging app using our platform will transform how real spaces are experienced, allowing users to easily personalize a space and visualize any changes made to it,” said Bill Brown, Matterport CEO. “We anticipate the utility and lifespan of a Matterport 3D Space to grow with valuable applications such as this.”

To see the Matterport and roOomy system in action, there are two interactive 360-degree tours available through the Matterport website. VRFocus will bring you further news on developments within the VR industry as they become available.
