Something for the Weekend: Bundles And Deals In The Steam Store

Some days are really sent to test you. Nothing goes right, and instead everything goes very wrong indeed. It’s raining out, or cold, or both. Something expensive breaks. Someone reliable is not. You’ve no time for any of the things you need to do. Your post is nothing but bills and your next-door neighbour is still playing that same song over and over they started playing several hours back. What’s the worst is when these days happen to be on the weekend, supposedly days of rest.

Sometimes you just need to take a load off, and get away from it all. In this way virtual reality (VR) is especially valuable. After all, if the world’s full of nonsense why not go to a new one? Thankfully there’s always a deal here on the various stores where you can pick up a videogame on the cheap and work out some of the stress from a testing world.

Today’s selection of titles picked by VRFocus come from Steam, so check out the below and maybe save some cash on something good.

CROTEAM VR Bundle

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

Remember what I said about combating stress above? Here’s a bumper pack of titles to cause havoc in.

Earlier in the week we told you about the release of Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE. Croteam have been busy throughout 2016 and 2017 converting some of their most iconic titles – the Serious Sam series – into VR compatible adventures for both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. As well as that release Croteam also released a special bundle of all their VR related titles onto Steam.
It’s a five pack consisting of Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope, Serious Sam VR: The First EncounterSerious Sam VR: The Second Encounter, the aforementioned Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE and also The Talos Principle.

The CROTEAM VR Bundle works out to be 51 percent off of purchasing the games separately; meaning you can pick up all five titles for £73.90 GBP rather than £150.95.

Racket Nx screenshotRacket: Nx

Racket: Nx is an out and out sports title, compare it to any game which involves a racket of some sort (badminton, tennis, table tennis, etc), just with a bit of sci-fi flare. Players are located in the centre of a dome, on a slightly raised platform. This dome is made up of hexagonal panels which illuminate with different options depending on the game mode or difficulty.” – Read Peter Graham’s preview for VRFocus.

Karnage Chronicles is a first-person experience that performs in a similar fashion to the extremely well received Vanishing Realms: Rite of Steel. Preview: Legendary Hunter VR – Duck Hunt for the 21st Century

If your old enough you may have owned an original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) back in the 80’s – or possibly managed to get hold of a Classic Mini NES recently – which had some iconic videogames. One of which was Duck Hunt, a basic lightgun title where you had to shoot ducks. Brilliantly addictive for the time, developer LastnOni has taken that simple premise and given it an upgrade for the 21st century, virtual reality (VR) style, with Legendary Hunter VR. Re-imagining that classic experience is all well and good, but with VR’s penchant for shooting titles, what can it offer that other shooters can’t?

Well Legendary Hunter VR falls into the bracket of wave shooter without a doubt, with a succession of targets flying about for you to shoot at. It’s also stationary, so there’s no need to worry about teleportation or first-person shooter (FPS) mechanics, you’re stuck on the spot and that’s it. Just as basic is the weaponry to take down these pesky waterfowl. You’re supplied with five boxes, four of which have ammo clips in and the fifth has a pair of pistols. If choose to go for the dual wield option then you won’t be able to reload unless you let go of one gun, so it was actually easier to just use the one and hold spare ammo in the other hand.

As soon as Legendary Hunter VR begins you can tell it has a high quality production feel to it. From the pistols to the surrounding environment everything looks and feels very well put together. Having to manually reload the guns, dropping out the empty clip before inserting a new one with a satisfying ‘click’, works perfectly. There’s no fumbling around trying to line it up while the ducks quack in laughter as they fly away.

LastnOni seems keenly aware that in this modern age just having a few ducks to shoot wouldn’t cut it, so there are several other animals to watch out for. Crows fly in that’ll disturb bee hives (not a good thing), alligators will slowly appear out of the water, and if you’ve got a keen enough eye – and are quick enough – there’s a rabbit or two to spot for some big points.

The studio hasn’t stopped there either. The videogame begins in the daytime with a timer next to the ammo. Once that reaches zero, nighttime begins and there’s a whole lot more to worry about, namely its dark, you don’t have a torch, and that’s when the wolves come out. Suddenly shooting a few ducks becomes a lot more terrifying, especially when you hear that first growl and all you can see are some faintly glowing eyes in the darkness.

There’s only one area at present, which cycles though day and night for as long as you can survive. LastnOni has showcased some good ideas that certainly make Legendary Hunter VR an interesting prospect. At present it has the aura of a nicely tuned tech demo that’s good for VR beginners. To really tempt VR enthusiasts into purchasing another FPS it will need to do a lot more, so hopefully over the course of its Steam Early Access release it’ll be expanded upon to offer a sizable experience.

Legendary Hunter VR Shoots Onto Steam Early Access Next Month

Just in case you needed one more reason to strap on your head-mounted display (HMD), developer LastnOni is launching the Duck Hunt-inspired Legendary Hunter VR on Steam next month. Luckily, players who simply can’t wait can download and play a free demo right now.

Legendary Hunter VR is the LastnOni’s love letter to NES classic Duck Hunt. In Legendary Hunter VR you hunt down ducks and other animals in a rainforest environment located on a desert island – in virtual reality (VR), of course. During the day, the player will only have to worry about hunting ducks and shooting vicious crows, but when night falls wolves and crocodiles get involved.

The player will be subject to the environments as dynamic weather rolls in, and you ration your ammunition in order to stay prepared when the more vicious creatures that inhabit the desert island decide to show themselves. The aim of the game is to essentially, survive, and survive as long as possible, as you’re accosted by not only the elements but the creatures that inhabit the forest, too.

The game will be compatible with the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift HMDs, and will launch on Steam in Early Access next month, though there’s a demo available right now on the videogame’s Steam store page.

The prospect of surviving for several nights in the wilderness sounds promising – when we get to play Legendary Hunter VR, you’ll be able to read all about it on VRFocus.
