Beat Saber Gets Another Free Track League of Legends’ ‘POP/STARS’
Beat Games recently tweeted that it had some Christmas surprises in store for Beat Saber players. Last week saw the first of these arrive in the form of an exclusive release called One Hope by American electronic duo Knower. Today, the next Beat Saber Christmas surprise has arrived, viral hit POP/STARS, from the League of Legends universe.
POP/STARS made its debut via a surprise augmented reality (AR) performance at the League of Legends 2018 World Final Opening Ceremony on 3rd November. The track hit #1 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart and has accumulated over 100 million views on YouTube.
The band is named after the K/DA skins which are available in League of Legends for champions Ahri, Akali, Evelynn, and Kai’Sa, and features the vocal talents of Madison Beer, (G)I-DLE, and Jaira Burns,
“We’ve been blown away by the reaction to ‘POP/STARS’ and the variety of amazing adaptations that content creators from both the League community and beyond have brought to life,” said Tom Ebsworth, EU Marketing Director for Riot Games in a statement. “As huge Beat Saber fans ourselves, both of the game and Beat Games who share our passion for gaming and music, it was a no-brainer that this crossover needed to exist. We’re excited to give fans of the song a new way to experience it and to hear what they think!”
“The moment we listened to ‘POP/STARS’ we knew for sure this is going to be a hit in Beat Saber,” said Jaroslav Beck, Beat Games CEO. “The track is so pulsing and the video is just epic – it matches our game perfectly. We are so excited that with Beat Saber, players finally get a chance to experience ‘POP/STARS’ on a whole new level and literally feel every beat.”
POP/STARS will be available today on Beat Saber, playable HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. For further Beat Saber updates, keep reading VRFocus.
K/DA’s POP/STARS From League Of Legends Hits Beat Saber For Free
If you’re anything like me then you probably that the single free new song DLC that released last week in Beat Saber was the extent of their teased “Christmas Gifts” but you’d be wrong. As it turns out, today Beat Saber (on all platforms including Rift, Vive, Windows VR, and PSVR) is getting another free song and this time it’s the viral hit track POP/STARS from League of Legends studio Riot Games, performed by a collaboration between Madison Beer, (G)I-DLE, and Jaira Burns known in the League of Legends universe now as K/DA.
When the song first released eaerly last month it took the internet by storm. In under two months it’s already amassed over 122M views on YouTube and probably several million more across Spotify and other platforms. It’s undeniably catchy and fits the game’s signature electronic soundtrack style perfectly.
“We’ve been blown away by the reaction to ‘POP/STARS’ and the variety of amazing adaptations that content creators from both the League community and beyond have brought to life,” said Tom Ebsworth, EU Marketing Director for Riot Games in a prepared statement. “As huge Beat Saber fans ourselves, both of the game and Beat Games who share our passion for gaming and music, it was a no-brainer that this crossover needed to exist. We’re excited to give fans of the song a new way to experience it and to hear what they think!”
Interestingly, fans actually beat the official Beat Games team to the punch. There was already a modded track available for download on Beat Saver, a website for custom song uploads, that you could play inside the game. It’s been downloaded over 8,000 times already. When I asked a PR representative from Riot Games about that existing custom beat map, she said the official version had been in development since before the song even released. The official version releasing today will likely be more polished plus it will include a version for the new Expert+ difficulty setting.
“We started working with Beat Games while POP/STARS was still in production,” said the Riot Games representative. “When the two teams got together to listen to a preliminary version of POP/STARS, we immediately recognized the affinity between the song and Beat Saber. After the Worlds final performance, we were pleased to see that fans of K/DA and Beat Saber were thinking the same.”

League of Legends Championship Opens with AR K-Pop Concert
League of Legends remains incredibly popular both for players and for those who are fans of e-sports. As such, the League of Legends Annual World Championships draws a huge crowd, which this year celebrated its opening ceremony with a special K-Pop performance enhanced with augmented reality (AR).
The K-Pop performance was created specifically to promote the four new K/DA skins, which were recently introduced into League of Legends. To celebrate the launch, developer Riot Games teamed up with K-Pop group (G)I-DLE as well as American artists Madison Beer and Jaira Burns.
Riot Games decided to create a fictional K-Pop group called K/DA, which features hero characters Ahri, Akali, Evelynn and Kai’Sa as members. For the opening ceremony, Riot Games decided to bring fiction and reality together by having its fictional band perform alongside a real one.
The song Pop/Stars by (G)I-DLE was performed on stage, accompanied by the four K/DA skins through the power of AR. The AR skins emerge from the air and then glide across the stage, dancing and strutting to the tune of the song as the audience cheers in appreciation.
As well as the on-stage performance, there is also an accompanying animated music video for Pop/Stars which features all four of the K/DA skins. The music performance was designed to kick off the World Championships, taking place in Incheon, South Korea, in style.
The K/DA skins have been released in the League Store. One particular skin, the K/DA Kai’Sa Prestige Edition skin also comes with a unique loading screen, splash art and VFX, but is only available until 19th November, 2018. The Pop/Stars song cal also be purchased from Google Play and iTunes, among others, priced at $1.29 (USD).
This is not the first time that Riot Games has used AR for its big live events, as the 2017 World championships saw an AR dragon zooming around the Beijing National Stadium.
