Competition: Win Copies of Scraper: First Strike & Scraper: Gauntlet

Last week virtual reality (VR) developer Labrodex Studios released its second title, a wave shooter called Scraper: GauntletOffering lots of action and customisation options the videogame continues the series originally started with 2018s Scraper: First Strike. VRFocus has teamed up with the studio to offer several of our lucky readers the chance to win both videogames in one awesome bundle.

Scraper: First Strike PSVR

In both titles you play a member of the Human Resistance Force (HRF), fighting a deadly war against the Humech’s, robot’s controlled by a powerful AI that doesn’t like humanity. While they are both first-person shooters (FPS) their gameplay is decidedly different. In Scraper: First Strike you pilot a Modified Hover Pod, a mobile weapons platform bristling with guns.

Inside this armoured weapons platform, you’re given free rein to explore the levels and hunt down enemies. With an 8 hour+ single-player campaign, Scraper: First Strike offers role-playing game (RPG) style elements, where you have to locate Blueprints to build new weapons, while the parts needed can be scavenged from robots and crates which can also be used to upgrade health and energy systems on the hover pod.

Scraper: Gauntlet, on the other hand, does away with all the exploration and concentrates on the action. The gameplay centres on a secret weapon codenamed TWS (Tri – Weapon System). Offering plenty of customisation options not only to its features but also the stats, Scraper: Gauntlet is all about finding your preferred loadout and shooting waves of robots. VRFocus gave the title a four-star review, saying: “If you’re after a VR title that’s big on adventure and elaborate quests then videogames like StormlandBorderlands 2 VRThe Mage’s Tale, Asgard’s Wrath and others offer that sort of experience. However, when you can’t be bothered with all that fuss and want a pickup and play shooter Scraper: Gauntlet is a solid option with polished visuals and gameplay mechanics.”

Review: Scraper: Gauntlet

Shooting galleries at funfairs were one of the best reasons to go no matter what the weather was like. Pitting those aiming skills against stationary objects just waiting to be knocked over, hopefully winning a prize in the process. Nowadays those types of amusements are in decline because videogames – virtual reality (VR) in particular – can offer so much more entertainment. The closest example to those classic games are wave shooters, where you don’t need to worry about movement, it’s all about survival and accuracy. The latest example of this is Scraper: Gauntlet by Labrodex Studios.

Scraper GauntletHaving previously released Scraper: First Strike back in 2018, a free-roaming first-person shooter (FPS) with role-playing game (RPG) elements, the studio wanted to continue that universe but offer a far more arcade-style experience. So there’s no running around, looking for supplies and crafting items, you’re now armed to the teeth with enemies to slaughter.

The premise behind the Scraper storyline is that in the future humanity is fighting for survival against an AI and hordes of robots at its command. In this title, you’re sent to a secret underground facility to retrieve plans to a secret weapon codenamed TWS (Tri-Weapon System). It’s essentially a gauntlet worn over your lower arm bristling with an assortment of firepower. Upon arrival, however, the blueprints are found to be corrupted with the only way to restore them is to step into a computer simulation and fight through waves of enemies. Sounds completely plausible…

As the name suggests the TWS houses three core armaments which can be upgraded and modified (more on this later) as you progress. You start by actually building the thing, which might be a minor task yet offers a nice touch to the proceedings, getting you acquainted with the weapon. There are other little additions which show Labrodex’s attention to detail, from the way modifiers work to the enemy roster in the AI Lab.

Scraper GauntletSo the core features are the mini-gun style Interrogator, a bouncing grenade called the Trajector and a charged energy beam dubbed Pulsar. These cover all your basic attacking needs in one, the Interrogator for peppering an area and taking down close to medium range enemies. The Pulsar is great for long-range situations and the Trajector is perfectly suited to those robots which like to hide behind cover – and they do. All their stats can be heavily upgraded but you don’t need to stop there as they can be swapped out the further you progress.

And why stop there. In addition to those three are the chest-mounted kinetic knife which stuns the robots, a shield on each gauntlet to stop any incoming fire. And a personal favourite, the Fluctuator. Essentially mimicking force grab from Star Wars you can pick them up, throw them across the room, smash them into a wall or shoot them to regain health. While it’s fun to experiment with all of these you’ll soon find a few favourites and stick with them because more awaits.

Options, options and more options. The problem with wave shooters is they can become very repetitious over time, with developers using the tried and tested method of ridiculously upping the difficulty to slow progression and extend the experience. This can turn what was an exciting videogame into a chore, with only the diehard completionists reaching the end. Scraper: Gauntlet has seemingly noted this, offering what VRFocus thinks is one of the best option selections of any shooter of this type.

Scraper GauntletThese can be split into three groups, Stats, Mods and Mutators. The Stats offer your main upgrade paths such as fire rate, blast radius, shield regen and upping your health. The Mods, on the other hand, swap out your core guns for variants. Change the mini-gun to a shotgun, give the Pulsar a hair-trigger or dispense with the bouncing grenade and select the super useful and destructive Vortex Bombs (mini black holes). Lastly, the Mutators help to mix up the gameplay options in each level, enemies are more accurate, have better shields, spawn as elites straight away, you get the gist.

At the main console you’re given three mission options. Each one will offer a set number of waves, a specific Mutator and a single upgrade point for a weapon, shield or core. Once the mission is complete these options will randomly change. Additionally, depending on the number of waves after a couple you’ll be given a choice of two Mutators to change up the gameplay.

That’s what’s enjoyable about Scraper: Gauntlet the variety. Yes, you are standing in one spot the entire time watching as more robots spawn in to attack like a conveyor belt but if that’s all the gameplay was it wouldn’t be worth a second look. Thankfully, as mentioned the robots aren’t as thick as pig poop and do get into cover. Depending on the level they even move cover to get in closer, it’s great to see action then reaction. Some do charge straight in spinning laser staffs of death while others snipe from afar. You’re even treated to boss fights which help bring a sense of grandeur to the end of each segment.

If you’re after a VR title that’s big on adventure and elaborate quests then videogames like Stormland, Borderlands 2 VR, The Mage’s Tale, Asgard’s Wrath and others offer that sort of experience. However, when you can’t be bothered with all that fuss and want a pickup and play shooter Scraper: Gauntlet is a solid option with polished visuals and gameplay mechanics. Plus, it’s not stupidly priced.

New Trailer, Screenshots & More Lift the lid on Scraper: Gauntlet

Virtual reality (VR) developer Labrodex Studios has been ramping up the release of information for its next shooter Scraper: Gauntlet, having unveiled a mixed reality (MR) trailer as well as conducting a beta last month. The launch is scheduled to take place in a few days giving the studio enough time to drop a new video and gameplay details.

Scraper Gauntlet

Scraper: Gauntlet’s storyline takes place within Labrodex’s Scraper universe from the first videogame:

“The megacities of the world are under siege by Humech forces, which are being led by LCF – R or Cifer as he calls himself. In an effort to turn the tide of battle, Dr. Janaki Bhandari, a leading AI scientist for ICARUS laboratories, has devised a plan to recover a highly classified weapon blueprint from her secret lab in Refugio, TX. The weapon, codenamed TWS (Tri – Weapon System) is a pair of advanced military gauntlets that house the latest in 3D printable munitions tech. Each gauntlet contains three base weapons that are highly customizable and were specifically designed and tested to counter core Humech abilities.”

You take the role of a Human Resistance Force (HRF) operative tasked with locating and retrieving a new weapon to help defeat the deadly Humech forces.

A big part of the Scraper: Gauntlet gameplay revolves around customisation, unlocking new weapon modifiers and mutators for your stats. The studio has revealed that over 30 mutators will be available to alter a range of variables, 17 are for the gauntlets themselves, improving shield durability or rate of fire. Then there are 15 player stats to select from, enhancing vitals like health.

Scraper Gauntlet

Finally, the three base weapons; Interrogator (a mini, mini-gun), Trajector (a bouncing grenade) and Pulsar (a charged energy beam) have 9 unlockable variants. Offering 12 weapon types you can turn the machine gun into an auto – shotgun, or the grenade launcher into a black hole gun.

Labrodex Studios states the single-player campaign should last around 8 hours with 18 post-game missions unlocking for an additional challenge. Scraper: Gauntlet  is scheduled to launch on 20th Feb supporting Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive, Vive Cosmos, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. It’ll be discounted from $14.99 USD to $9.99 for a limited time. For further updates keep reading VRFocus.

Step Inside the Game as Scraper: Gauntlet Mixed Reality Trailer Released

Labrodex Studios originally planned to release its wave shooter Scraper: Gauntlet in December 2019 but held off to further polish the experience. The new release date is only a couple of weeks away so in preparation the team have unveiled the first-ever mixed reality (MR) video playing the title as well as the current beta updates.

Scraper: GauntletLast month the studio put out a call for beta testers and by the looks of it got a decent response. The beta was upgraded this week with a bunch of new features, graphical upgrades and performance tweaks.

The big addition was the integration of MR recording software LIV, allowing the studio to record the below video. Not only does the video showcase Scraper: Gauntlet in action but it also helps to demonstrate the videogame on Oculus Quest via Oculus Link. Thanks to the beta the title has been tested on Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive, Vive Cosmos, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

“The beta program has been a big hit and has provided fantastic feedback for the development team,” states CEO Jim R. Ivon in an email to VRFocus. VR beta testers are amazing and have been awesome to work with.  We’re approaching 200 people that signed up and have had a couple hundred logged feedback requests.  This has resulted in weekly patches to address issues and changes the beta community has provided us. Players are starting to reach post-game with one nearing max rank based on 20 or so hours of play.”

Scraper: Gauntlet

As the launch nears the team is putting the final touches to the environment – as you can see from the new screenshots. Other tweaks include more functionality for the Fluctuator weapon offering unique behaviours to enemy weapons when grabbed, an improved Haptic knife and more graphical settings to suit a wide range of hardware configurations.

Labrodex Studios isn’t stopping there already outlining plans for future content. Top of the list will be new maps, mods, mutators and maybe a boss. Also being looked into is the possibility of how multiplayer or a co-op mode may fit in.

Scraper: Gauntlet

VRFocus previewed Scraper: Gauntlet earlier this week, saying: “Variety is the spice of life and Labrodex Studios is definitely trying to make sure Scraper: Gauntlet has that to ensure broad appeal. This early version feels like development is coming along nicely.”

In Scraper: Gauntlet you take the role of a Human Resistance Force (HRF) operative tasked with locating and retrieving a new weapon to help defeat the deadly Humech forces. This weapon is an arm-mounted gauntlet with various offensive and defensive capabilities. To collect the blueprints you need to complete various tactical simulations using the weapon, upgrading and modifying it as needed.

Preview: Scraper: Gauntlet – Dynamic Shooting Range Action

Labrodex Studios is a developer which enjoys experimenting with both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology – especially when it comes to dogs. Last year the studio released its first VR experience in the form of Scraper: First Strike, a first-person shooter (FPS) that’s a little underrated. Rather than make a sequel the studio has gone off on a little tangent and created Scraper: Gauntlet, another FPS set in the same universe offering a different gameplay experience.

Scraper: Gauntlet

From first impressions Scraper: Gauntlet is looking to emulate the fast and frantic fixed wave shooters that dominated the VR scene in the early years. You’re equipped with a couple of heavily modifiable gauntlets on each arm, offering both offensive and defensive capabilities, all of which can be upgraded depending on the choices you make.

Scraper: Gauntlet is essentially a VR training simulation, with the storyline centred around humanity fighting a war against deadly robots. As an operative of the Human Resistance Force (HRF), it’s your job to defeat the Humech forces and to do so you’re sent into a lab to retrieve a deadly new weapon. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as just grabbing it having to unlock the schematics by playing through a succession of levels.

Inside the main lab which functions as the central hub you can wander around via teleporting but for the actual levels themselves, you’re fixed to one location. This has its pros and cons depending on who plays the title. Because there’s no need to worry about moving the team has ensured the gameplay should be comfortable for all players. Labrodex Studios seems very well aware that a bog-standard wave shooter might not be an exciting prospect in the VR era of videogames like Stormland so while Scraper: Gauntlet doesn’t employ movement it tries several other tricks to facilitate dynamic gameplay.

Scraper: GauntletFirst up are the level options. You’re not simply thrown into wave after wave of enemies, missions and their subsequent levels do offer choice. You can select one of three each time you’re in the lab, offering a mixture of waves, anywhere from 2 to 6 that VRFocus noticed. In addition to waves, each mission has specific variables such as the enemies encountered, buffs to health/damage and more. Far more essential, missions will gift one upgrade towards improving the weapons, shields or core attributes if completed. Succeed or fail, the mission options will differ each time you play.

Then there’s the gauntlet itself, a mini powerhouse of a weapon system. Located on both arms for dual-wielding, there are three guns to select; the Interrogator (a mini, mini-gun), the Trajector (a bouncing grenade) and the Pulsar (a charged energy beam). Plus there are the two shields and a very handy anti-gravity fluctuator which is basically force grab, picking up enemies to then fling them about like ragdolls.

The assortment covers every eventuality within each level, whether a robot is charging straight at you or sneakily using some cover to hide behind. One failing of a lot of wave shooters is the lack of enemy intelligence, standing there like the Terminator barely doing anything apart from shooting. Scraper: Gauntlet doesn’t seem to suffer this same fate. The basic soldier robots run straight for cover and will use it to get closer, at points even laying on the ground to take shots. Others have their own shields to move and fire mortars. Naturally, one type does exist which full-on charges but that’s kind of expected considering the electrified pole in its hands.

Scraper: GauntletLevels tend to consist of around 5-6 enemies and once a wave is complete a couple of options then appear for the following section, altering the difficultly for a fresh challenge.

A stationary wave shooter always feels a little more of a hard sell in today’s market, as VR fans want more and more from each experience. Variety is the spice of life and Labrodex Studios is definitely trying to make sure Scraper: Gauntlet has that to ensure broad appeal. This early version feels like development is coming along nicely, although VRFocus would love to see some sort of co-op implementation to enjoy with a mate.

Sci-Fi Shooter Scraper: Gauntlet Will be a Pre-Christmas Release

There are plenty of virtual reality (VR) titles coming out over the next month to keep gamers entertained over the festive period. One of those will be Labrodex Studios’ latest Scraper: Gauntlet, with the studio more of the storyline behind this single-player videogame as well as when it’s arriving.

Scraper: Gauntlet

Scraper: Gauntlet is a first-person shooter (FPS) with wave shooter gameplay focused around heavy weapon modification and customisation. Several weeks ago the studio released new artwork detailing the hub where all players start their journey.

Highlighting the story behind this adventure, Labrodex Studios explain:

“Scraper: Gauntlet takes place concurrently with Scraper: First Strike, which occurs after the events of the tie-in novel, Scraper: The Rise of Cifer. As Casey Maxwell, the protagonist of First Strike, is trying to free New Austin from the evil Cifer’s clutches; Dr. Bhandari, the AI scientist responsible for Cifer’s creation, is trying to salvage any useful weaponry she can without tipping any robots off to the current operative’s location. She created the Gauntlet, also known as the Tri-Weapon System (T.W.S.) and the main item in the game, in case of a seemingly impossible robot rebellion. After the very real robot uprising, Dr. Bhandari was left feeling incredibly guilty about Cifer’s inexplicable attitude change and its effects on all of humanity. She hopes that in creating and dispersing the Gauntlet to those who need it among the surviving humans, that she redeems herself somewhat from her horrible mistake.”

Scraper: Gauntlet

“With Scraper: Gauntlet, we wanted the story to exist in the same universe, but with new interactions from characters and with more of a focus on weapon capabilities,” Project Manager Andrew Hurley explains in a statement. “You might remember Dr. Bhandari from Scraper: First Strike, but she only shows up at the end of the game for a few minutes. We wanted to expand on her role and give her an important connection to the story of this game that explains why she wasn’t too present in the first game.”

Labrodex Studios will be releasing Scraper: Gauntlet for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets on 20th December. No price details are available at the moment. The studio also plans on releasing further details on the combat and weapon modification ahead of launch. As those details are released, VRFocus will keep you updated.

New Artwork Released for Sci-fi Shooter Scraper: Gauntlet

Virtual reality (VR) developer Labrodex Studios is currently in the process of working on the second title in its Scraper series,  Scraper: Gauntlet, a first-person shooter (FPS). While work is underway to release the title by the end of 2019, the studio has given VRFocus an exclusive look at the artwork and design process.

Scraper: Gauntlet

Scraper: Gauntlet is a wave shooter which aims to mix up gameplay in a number of ways, one of the core attributes begin the weapons system. This isn’t your everyday selection of guns found mounted on your hip or back. Instead, players are supplied with gauntlet’s – hence the title – mechanical projectile throwers strapped directly to their wrists.

These glowing instruments of death are highly customisable, offering all manner of loadouts to deal with the various enemies and environments players will encounter, from machines guns to rocket launchers there will be something to suit everyone’s tastes. And to make sure the experience is comfortable for all players, each area will have fixed spawn points, so there’s no need to worry about locomotion issues.

Labrodex Studios has now detailed one of these locations, a futuristic lab created by Lawrence Nelson – a designer who has worked with companies like Lucas Arts. This lab is the first space players will come across in Scraper: Gauntlet because it’s the hub before entering the campaign itself.

The images below showcase the lab from various inside and outer angles highlighting the attention to detail which has gone into the design. From early hand-drawn concept sketches to the fully rendered environment.

Do they look good, want to learn more about Scraper: Gauntlet? Currently, in development for Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets, Labrodex Studios will be going into greater detail regarding the FPS in the coming weeks, especially as the team plan on releasing the videogame before the end of the year.

VRFocus will be covering Scraper: Gauntlet’s development as it’ll be taking place in the same universe as Scraper: First Strikea tidy little shooter. When VRFocus has more info we’ll let you know as soon as possible.

Wave Shooter Scraper: Gauntlet to Expand Labrodex Studios’ Sci-fi Universe

In September virtual reality (VR) developer Labrodex Studios revealed plans to expand its Enterprise AR & VR Solutions Division. While it would be taking on more corporate work to increase revenue the company also confirmed work on a new title in its Scraper universe, a spin-off called Scraper: Gauntlet. Today, new details have been shared alongside a teaser trailer.

Scraper: Gauntlet

Unlike Scraper: First Strike which was a cyberpunk first-person shooter (FPS) where you piloted a Modified Hover Pod (MHP) around levels, clearing out robot enemies and upgrading your pod, Scraper: Gauntlet is a far more fast-paced wave shooter with highly modifiable guns.

The main change in Scraper: Gauntlet is that you’re stationary, with no running around to worry about all the focus is on shooting, completing a variety of missions including boss battles to unlock new customisations which are skill tree-based.

“Gauntlet takes place in the Scraper universe but has a very different style of play.  You can design your weapon loadout, choose your mods, designate skills and blast away enemy robots as you progress through the game. Gauntlet offers plenty of customization through talent trees, earning mods, completing missions and fighting bosses,” said Jim Ivon, CEO and Executive Producer, in a statement

Scraper: Gauntlet

As you can see from the gameplay trailer below, the wrist-mounted guns have a wide variety of mods to choose from, suiting different playstyles and scenarios. From bouncing grenades of walls, machine guns to pepper an area, classic rocket launchers and defensive shields, there will be lots to play with. “We’re especially excited for people to try out the Fluctuator, which lets the player grab enemies and objects and throw them around the environment,” adds Ivon.

Scraper: Gauntlet is currently in development for Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets, with a PlayStation VR version also a possibility. A Q4 2019 release window has previously been mentioned, although Labrodex Studios has yet to settle on a date.

Scraper: First Strike launched last year across multiple headsets and was updated recently adding Valve Index controller support. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Labrodex Studios, reporting back with the latest updates.

Labrodex Studios Announces Scraper: Gauntlet For PC VR

Labrodex Studios, the team behind Scraper: First Strike, has announced a new game for PC VR set within the Scraper universe, titled Scraper: Gauntlet.

The game is an RPG wave shooter that will bring a “unique perspective to the Scraper universe with a fresh twist to core gameplay and mechanics” from the last Scraper game, according to a post from Labrodex on Reddit. The studio announced the title alongside a teaser trailer that shows some basic gameplay.

Aesthetically, the assets in the footage look quite good. The trailer also shows the game’s main weapon: the Tri-Weapon System (TWS). The TWS features a variety of modifiable weapons, including mini-guns, grenades, beam rifle and a gravity fluctuator. The studio claims you’ll be able to choose your weapons to best fit your playstyle and modify your weapon as you progress through the game. You’ll also encounter some familiar enemies and environments, if you’re a fan of Scraper: First Strike.

We weren’t huge fans of the first game in the Scraper series, which over-promised and under-delivered. However, hopefully Labrodex addresses some of the issues we had with the first game before they release Scraper: Gauntlet.

Currently, the game is only scheduled for an unknown release date on PC VR. Scraper: First Strike was also available on PSVR. In the meantime, you can check out the studio’s other recent release, Humans 101, which is available on Steam as an Early Access title for PC VR.
