Gamescom 2019 Interview: Lifting the lid on Kamile VR

There was myriad of virtual reality (VR) developers from across the globe at Gamescom 2019 last month, covering a whole swath of gaming genres. While some were well versed in dealing with the crowds for others it was their debut event. The latter was the case for Lithuanian developer Gluk Media and its sci-fi title Kamile VR. Currently awaiting a release on Steam,  creator Bartosh Polonski was on hand to detail what to expect from the videogame.

Kamile VR

Only revealed a couple of weeks prior to Gamescom 2019, Kamile VR is an episodic title in a similar vein to experiences like Vader Immortal: A Star Wars Story, where there are interactive elements but the overall design is centred around a strong narrative the studio wishes to tell.

Kamile VR takes place in a futuristic 2084, a dystopian world where the job market is dominated by AI. Because of this, to make a living most people lend their brainpower for Neural Mining processes which helps further empower the AI capabilities. You play as Kamile, wife of a genius scientist looking to develop a new generation of AI. When a work-related incident turns to tragedy you’re forced to fight and flight in order to protect both son and your husband’s secrets.

In the first episode, you’re able to perform basic actions to uncover the story and explore the area with the experience taking anywhere from 15 – 30 minutes depending on how thorough you are. The gameplay is kept comfortable by employing a fixed point-to-point teleportation system – similar to ARKTIKA.1 or Wilson’s Heart – although that does limit exploration.

Currently, the first episode of Kamile VR is scheduled for a Steam Early Access launch in October, supporting headsets including Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR.

Episodic Sci-fi Adventure Kamile VR to Debut at Gamescom 2019

In a couple of weeks, Europe’s biggest gaming event takes place in Cologne, Germany, Gamescom 2019. From the looks of things, there’s going to be quite the virtual reality (VR) presence. Gluk Media, a Lithuanian developer of immersive content has just confirmed it’ll be attending, showcasing its latest title Kamile VR.

Kamile VR

Set in an AI-powered city, Kamile VR will be an episodic experience comprising five instalments, with the first being shown at Gamescom. The story is set in a dystopian 2084 where jobs have been taken over by AI. This doesn’t mean a life of luxury for the population, in fact, quite the opposite. Humanity now faces the reality of constant work and slavery for digital economics, lending brainpower for Neural Mining processes and further empowering AI capabilities.

You take the role of Kamile, the wife of an AI scientist working on next-generation technology. “When work-related tragic incident turns into family drama, Kamile is forced to fight and flight in order to protect her son and his secrets,” explains the story synopsis.

Kamile VR is heavily focused towards a storytelling style experience with gameplay elements, which sounds very similar to titles such as Vader Immortal: A Star Wars StoryGluk Media explains: “Kamile VR will feature various gameplay elements. Unique VR setting will provide augmented reality-driven user’s interface to navigate and familiarize yourself with the world, while different chapters of the story will feature hacking, shooting and brain invasion sequences [sic].”

Kamile VR

After its Gamescom 2019 debut, Kamile VR episode one is scheduled to launch in October, supporting headsets including Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. It’ll feature an original score written by film composers Paulius Kilbauskas and Vygintas Kisevičius.

Kamile Is An Interactive VR Sci-Fi Drama About Working Too Hard

If you’re looking for more story-driven VR experiences, you might want to check out Kamile.

This new VR drama is being developed by Lithuanian team, Gluk Media. Set you in 2048, you take on the role of Kamile, a woman married to a leading scientist working in AI. After a tragic accident, you’re flung into a fight to save Kamile’s son, who hides an AI prototype in his brain. Gluk says the piece will explore the “constant work and slavery for digital economics.”

The first trailer is above. It looks a little rough around the edges, but the core pitch is strong enough to keep us intrigued. The game’s futuristic take on an urban metropolis definitely reminds us of Blade Runner, as does the story’s corporate undertones.

Rather than a ‘game’ as such, it looks closer to something like Star Wars: Vader Immortal. This form of VR storytelling is an increasingly promising area for the industry.

Interestingly, it’s Gluk’s first take on narrative-driven VR. In the past, the company has worked on 360 degree videos and virtual recreations of historical sites. The company has also done work in AR and created projects using biometric technology and 3D projection mapping. Some of those even use our old friend the Kinect.

Gluk plans for Kamile to be a series with five episodes. Chapter 1 is due to release in October on all major PC VR headsets and PSVR. Gluk will also be showing the game off at Gamescom later this week. We’re looking forward to checking it out.
