SEGA Increases Investment in Location-Based VR

SEGA Entertainment and virtual reality (VR) solutions provider StarVR today announced its collaboration to bring StarVR arcade experiences to existing SEGA Game Center locations throughout Japan. StarVR will work with SEGA Entertainment to roll out its VR arcade experiences across the country, at three SEGA arcade locations by March 2018 and at more than ten locations by the end of the year.

John Wick: The Impossible Task

The two companies today unveiled the first StarVR-powered VR arcade installation in the flagship SEGA Game Center Shinjuku Kabukicho branch located in Tokyo, and will welcome consumers starting on 22nd December 2017. Tickets for the experiences will be priced at 1,200 Japanese yen. At launch, Japanese consumers will be able to experience John Wick Chronicles and The Mummy Prodigium Strike developed by Starbreeze Studios, while more titles will be introduced gradually.

“Continuing our commitment to providing the best arcade experiences in Japan, we’re now bringing world-class VR to SEGA Game Centers with StarVR,” said Tadashi Kawaguchi, Senior Vice President of SEGA Entertainment. “With StarVR’s industry-leading visuals, immersive haptics and premium content, we’re stepping up the game and redefining the arcade experience.”

“We’re especially excited to bring StarVR arcade experiences to Japan, as it has the world’s most sophisticated arcade industry and culture,” said Jerry Kao, Vice Chairman of StarVR Corporation. “Collaborating with SEGA Entertainment, the leader in the local market, we’re confident that we can make truly immersive and premium VR experiences widely available to Japanese consumers soon.”

With nearly 200 branches nationwide, SEGA Game Center is one of the leading arcade chains in Japan. Managed and operated by SEGA Entertainment, the arcades currently provide a range of entertainment choices including Prize Games where customers can win a range of unique items; rhythm action experiences; the latest game consoles; “Purikura” which are photo sticker booths where in some stores costumes can be rented; and Medal Games where friends challenge each other to win as many tokens possible.

The StarVR HMD is a VR head-mounted display (HMD) built from the ground-up for enterprise and professional entertainment use. The HMD features a 5K resolution and 210-degree field of view, with the potential to offer experiences above and beyond home environment setups.

Purchased by Starbeeze Studios back in 2015, StarVR has since received significant investment from Acer. The StarVR HMD is targeting location-based VR specifically, and so is the perfect partner for SEGA Entertainment’s planned expansion. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest moves on the VR scene from SEGA Entertainment, as well as any new StarVR installations.

Review: John Wick Chronicles

Most gamers of any age will likely know that videogame movie tie-ins are ropy at best. Whether it’s a film created from a game or the other way around, there’s been a constant struggle to get the two entertainment worlds to successfully coalesce. The world of virtual reality (VR) is no different with this month seeing the release of John Wick Chronicles, coinciding with Keanu Reeves’ John Wick: Chapter 2 in cinemas. So has this been a successful partnership, well yes and no.

Created by Starbreeze Studios in collaboration with several other developers, John Wick Chronicles is what you’d expect, a gun filled, bullet flying, extravaganza of carnage and action. The infamous Continental hotel serves as the hub for the title, with the lobby and concierge accurately reproduced for that air of authenticity. It’s this attention to detail that can be seen across the entire production, whether its the graphics, gameplay or gun mechanics, John Wick Chronicles has been built to AAA standards.

You’ll be able to start off nice and easy, heading to the training room to get acquainted with shooting unlimited rounds of ammo at targets. This is all standard fare with duel wielding pistols, SMG’s, a shotgun and a sniper rifle with which to hone those aiming skills. After which you’ll want to get straight into the action and begin the first level, pitting you against waves of enemies armed to the teeth with guns, grenades and anything else they can throw at you.

It’s here where all that polish starts to come a little unstuck. That’s because John Wick Chronicles is a wave shooter, nothing wrong with that per se, but with such a high profile title using a gameplay mechanic so widely used in VR its certainly feels somewhat lacklustre that you’re essentially nailed to the spot. Using the HTC Vive’s room scale system does allow for duck and cover mechanics which certainly aid immersion, although this can be somewhat hampered depending on real world floor space.

Each level does its best to switch up the gameplay by having enemies appear all the way around you, at different levels and distances, requiring inventive use of the resources that are available. Do you stick to just pistols and try to take out long range enemies with a very good shot or switch to the sniper and then back again which can cost valuable time and life. This can involve some hectic fraught decisions during the intense gun battles but opponents generally come from one area at a time, so you’re not having to consciously keep track of every area. This is made even easier with the concierge continuously saying ‘check left’, ‘check right’, and so on. While helpful it can get annoying.

But the biggest issue with John Wick Chronicles is that of content. Aside from the training area there are only three levels available, which most players will probably get through in under an hour if they have a good run through – the second level is certainly tricky – making it feel somewhere between a tech demo and a fully fledged experience.

If John Wick Chronicles had been released in the middle of 2016 it could’ve been a showpiece for VR, expertly produced with taught gameplay and beautiful design. Coming out now though its almost having to play catch up, without offering anything new. With the likes of Raw Data on the market – which allows for movement and multiplayer options – for HTC Vive, the experience seems somewhat lacking. You’ll play it and enjoy it the once but that’ll be it, only starting it up again to showcase VR to your mates.

Get Eyes-On with John Wick Chronicles: An Eye for an Eye in New Screenshots

Starbreeze Studios’ John Wick Chronicles has become one of the most highly anticipated virtual reality (VR) videogames amongst early adopters since its announcement. An action-orientated motion-picture that seems perfect for adaptation to VR, John Wick Chronicles will debut next week with John Wick Chronicles: An Eye for an Eye, coming exclusively to HTC Vive.

In a selection of brand new screenshots taken from the videogame, you can see just how much John Wick Chronicles: An Eye for an Eye deviates from the early demonstration versions witnessed by VRFocus. In a hands-on preview of John Wick Chronicles: The Impossible Task, VRFocus discussed the high visual standard achieved and the slower pace of gameplay. John Wick Chronicles: An Eye for an Eye however, appears to be a more gunplay heavy experience.

Whether or not John Wick Chronicles: An Eye for an Eye and John Wick Chronicles: The Impossible Task will see release as two separate entities remains to be seen, however with a release date of 9th February 2017 for the former, it won’t be long until VR gamers get to find out whether the videogame editions of John Wick can live-up to the hype.

John Wick Chronicles: An Eye for an Eye will launch on HTC Vive next week, and VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on the John Wick Chronicles VR experiences.

John Wick Chronicles Dated for Release on HTC Vive

Way back in August 2015 Starbreeze Studios and Lionsgate announced a virtual reality (VR) version of Keanu Reeves film John Wick. Called John Wick Chronicles: An Eye for an Eye, the experience has made an appearance at several events over the past year, and today the developers have announced a launch date for the first-person shooter.

Supporting HTC Vive, John Wick Chronicles: An Eye for an Eye has now been scheduled for 9th February, for release via Steam. Created in collaboration with Grab Games, Big Red Button and GameCo, the experience puts players into the shoes of titular character John Wick, tasking them with assassinating targets in the Continental Hotel with an arsenal of weapons, from handguns and grenades to sniper rifles and SMGs.

The VR release is set to coincide with the film launch of John Wick: Chapter 2, which has also been scheduled for February, although the two will offer separate storylines.

VRFocus got to preview the video game a while back, stating that: “The visual quality of John Wick: The VR Experience is remarkable. A significant step above that which VR enthusiasts have become used to, John Wick: The VR Experience is easily on par with the high end output of traditional 2D monitor videogames.”

John Wick Chronicles: An Eye for an Eye is available for pre-order on Steam for $19.99 USD/ £14.99 GBP. Pre-ordering the videogame will also net users a free copy of PAYDAY 2 as well as a John Wick weapon pack in Payday. US residents also have the option to pre-order a deluxe edition that includes the original John Wick movie at $9.99.
