Arriving Today is Arizona Sunshine’s Dead Man DLC for Oculus Quest

Vertigo Games ported its zombie shooter Arizona Sunshine to Oculus Quest in December 2019 following that up with free content updates for the last few months. Today sees the first of the paid-for DLC packs arrive, offering players the Dead Man storyline.

Arizona Sunshine - Dead Man DLC

The Arizona Sunshine – Dead Man DLC narrative is a prequel where you play as Dockson, a US Army Special Forces corporal, sent into an infested US missile base in an attempt to contain the expanding zombie outbreak by using a nuclear warhead.

Set mostly within a dark missile silo the mission can be played solo or cooperatively whilst offering players new achievements to unlock and weapons to fight the zombie hordes.

Arizona Sunshine – Dead Man DLC includes:
  • An all-new campaign mission telling a prequel story to Arizona Sunshine
  • Online co-op functionality for up to two players
  • A range of difficulty degrees including the insane Apocalyptic Mode!
  • 6 new achievements spread across an infested missile base
  • 3 new weapons: A fully automatic submachine gun, a two-handed shotgun and a tactical handgun
  • 3 new masks: the military gas mask, the skull mask, and the Dead Man mask

The Dead Man DLC is available through the Oculus Store today for $2.49 USD/€2.49 EUR.

Arizona Sunshine - Dead Man DLC

Next month Vertigo Games will release The Damned DLC on Oculus Quest for $4.99/€4.99 which is set before Dead Man. For this outing, you’re tasked with reactivating the generators of a massive Arizonan hydroelectric dam. While Arizona Sunshine itself doesn’t support cross-buy between Oculus Quest and Rift, the two DLC packs do, so there’s no need to purchase them again.

Arizona Sunshine first arrived for PC VR back in 2016, remaining a popular shooter for most of that time. Vertigo Games’ next original title After the Fall was unveiled last year but it has been quite some time since new details were released, a release slated for 2020.

Undead Valley Update for Arizona Sunshine Shuffles Onto Oculus Quest Today

Ever since the Oculus Quest arrived last year virtual reality (VR) developers have been incredibly resourceful in managing to squeeze their PC videogames onto the standalone device. Vertigo Games and Jaywalkers Interactive achieved this with zombie shooter Arizona Sunshine in December, releasing a couple of content updates in the following weeks. Today marks the launch of the third and final free update, ‘Undead Valley’.

Arizona Sunshine - Undead Valley - Quest

Just like the ‘Old Mine’ update from last month, ‘Undead Valley’ expands the multiplayer Horde Mode with a fresh map. Played solo or with up to three mates, the map is set in one giant warehouse with multiple levels and environmental obstacles like exploding barrels – great for killing hordes of zombies and clearing a route.

As with any of the maps, the best course of action is to keep moving and not get cornered with ‘Undead Valley’ containing doors to unlock which can offer new routes or supplies. Finding new weapons, ammo and tactical positions is key to surviving and eventually breaking out of the warehouse.

As mentioned, ‘Undead Valley’ is the last free piece of content you’ll be getting as March and April will both contain paid-for DLC. Next month sees the arrival of the Dead Man DLC, a prequel to the core Arizona Sunshine storyline. Here you play a Special Forces soldier trying to get a nuclear missile launched in a desperate attempt to halt the spread of zombies. The  Dead Man DLC will retail for $2.49 USD/€2.49 EUR. In April The Damned DLC will arrive for $4.99/€4.99 taking the storyline back even further. This time you’re tasked with reactivating the generators of a massive Arizonan hydroelectric dam.

Remember that both DLC packs support cross-buy on the Oculus platform, so if you’ve already got the Oculus Rift versions then there’s no need to pay again (Arizona Sunshine itself doesn’t support cross-buy).

Arizona Sunshine - Oculus Quest

At the moment Vertigo Games is still keeping quiet on its next shooter, After the Fall, with no updates having been released since September when PlayStation VR support was confirmed.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Arizona Sunshine, reporting back with all the latest updates and announcements.

Oculus Quest’s First Arizona Sunshine Update Adds ‘Old Mine’ Horde Mode Map

Vertigo Games and JayWalkers Interactive brought their popular zombie shooter Arizona Sunshine to Oculus Quest just over a month ago and now the teams have just released to first content update. A free addition to the horde mode, players can now fight waves of the undead in subterranean level ‘Old Mine’.

Arizona Sunshine

Arizona Sunshine’s horde mode allows up to four players to cooperate and survive an intense arcade experience, utilising the environment as best as possible to live as long as possible. Trapped in the dark depths of the Old Dutchman Mine, this area provides one of the more terrifying levels in the videogame.

Old Mine a fairly vertical level, with plenty of stairs and platforms to take advantage of, plus a few nicely placed explosive barrels for those larger groups. As with any horde mode map, you’ll need to be continually moving so as not to get cornered whilst looking for supplies. Single- and two-handed weapons, grenades, and ammo are scattered around the mine.

Over on the Oculus Blog Vertigo Games has even listed a few survival tips for newcomers:

  1. Get to know the map. Explore as much as you can early on. Knowing where the ammo will be is a big advantage when the Freddies are coming.
  2. The Freddies are endless. Before you can clear the first wave, another wave is already incoming! So keep moving and keep collecting ammo—you will definitely need it.
  3. Build a solid loadout. A shotgun and a pistol is a good combo. Try to aim for the head to conserve ammo, and when they get too close, use your shotgun to get rid of them fast.
  4. Bring a friend—or three. You’re stronger in a party. Having someone watch your back while you reload is vital, and getting that new weapon from a difficult spot is easier with someone at your side.

Arizona Sunshine

Another free update will be released for Oculus Quest next month, in the form of ‘Undead Valley’, expanding the horde mode maps even further. While March and April will see paid DLC arrive.

The first to arrive by the end of the year is the free Two-Handed Weapons Update, adding an assortment of rifles, assault rifles and sub-machine guns to play with. The next two free updates will be for the multiplayer Horde mode, adding the Old Mine level in January and the Undead Valley level in February.

The final two will be the big DLC drops, Dead Man and The Damned. Both will be paid DLC but they will support cross-buy on the Oculus platform. so if you’ve already got the Oculus Rift version of the DLC then no need to pay again. The Dead Man DLC is a prequel to the core Arizona Sunshine storyline, where you play a Special Forces soldier trying to get a nuclear missile launched in a desperate attempt to halt the spread of zombies. The Damned DLC goes back even further, where you’re tasked with reactivating the generators of a massive Arizonan hydroelectric dam.

“We are very proud of what our team has accomplished from a technical perspective to bring Arizona Sunshine over to the Quest platform in a way that does the game and our new players on Quest justice,” says Vertigo Games Studio Director Richard Stitselaar. “We have pushed ourselves and the boundaries of VR over the past years and will continue to do so in 2020, with additional Arizona Sunshine content making its way to Oculus Quest. It will be a very exciting year for Vertigo Games with a lot to look forward to, including our all-new VR action FPS After the Fall.”

First Gameplay Footage Released of Arizona Sunshine on Oculus Quest

Oculus Quest has had some big titles arrive over the past few weeks with the likes of Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series, A Fisherman’s Tale and Espire 1: VR Operative. Next up is Arizona Sunshine by Vertigo Games and Jaywalkers Interactive which is due to arrive at the end of this week. The pair have now released the first gameplay footage highlighting what the standalone headset is capable of.

Arizona Sunshine - Oculus Quest

Arizona Sunshine for Oculus Quest has been completely rebuilt for the headset, ensuring the same frantic zombie shooting gameplay has been kept. This has meant the graphical fidelity has taken a hit – just like any PC VR title ported to the portable device – but the developers have also managed to ensure that the multiplayer has been retained.

Set in southwestern America overrun by zombies after the apocalypse, the campaign offers both single-player and co-op gameplay where players have to explore desert canyons and deep dark mines. One of the main characteristics of Arizona Sunshine is the weapon handling, with a selection of pistols, assault rifles, shotguns and more available to wipe the hordes out.

Because Arizona Sunshine has been rebuilt for Oculus Quest Vertigo Games has confirmed the videogame won’t support cross-platform gaming, so only Oculus Quest gamers can play together. Additionally, there will be no cross-buy support for Oculus Rift owners but there’s always Oculus Link.

Arizona Sunshine Dead Man DLC PlayStation VR Release Pushed Back to July

Arizona Sunshine has become incredibly popular, first launching on PC virtual reality (VR) platforms before making its way to the PlayStation VR. Fans were therefore excited to hear that there would be story DLC, though it turned out that PlayStation VR users would have to wait a while for it – and now it seems they will need to wait even longer.

The Arizona Sunshine – Dead Man DLC came out on PC-based VR platforms such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in May, with publisher Vertigo Games initially announced that the DLC would be coming to PlayStation VR in June.

That date has now been pushed back to July 2018, and a more precise date has not been confirmed. The reason for the delay was indicated to be some sort of technical limitation or issue, with Vertigo Games and Jaywalkers Interactive saying: “We’d like to apologize to those disappointed by the launch being pushed out of June. We can’t wait for you to play the prequel mission, but bringing it to PS VR – at the desired quality – is taking a little longer than foreseen due to a technical challenge now solved.”

Arizona Sunshine – Dead Man DLC acts as a prequel to the story of Arizona Sunshine. Set on a Us missile base in the early stages of the zombie apocalypse, the player takes the role of a US Army Special Forces corporal, who is trying to contain the zombie outbreak with nuclear weaponry even as his bases comes under attack from the walking dead.

The DLC will feature online co-op for up to two players and a range of difficulty settings, including an Apocalyptic Mode for the truly hard-core players. There are also some new trophies and achievements to grab.
