Baobab’s Original VR Film Invasion! Hits Quest With Hand-Tracking

VR filmmaker Baobab Studios is bringing its original short to Oculus Quest in Invasion! Anniversary Edition.

Invasion! originally launched on the Gear VR and Oculus Rift back in 2016 as one of the studio’s first projects. Directed by Eric Darnell of Madagascar fame, the piece follows a cutesy bunny that becomes the first to encounter two bumbling aliens that make a rude entrance on Earth. It’s a little like a Looney Tunes short in VR and stars Ethan Hawke. It even ended up winning an Emmy in 2017.

Don’t have a Quest? You can watch the entire piece below on YouTube, though take note you won’t be getting crucial features like 6DOF tracking or 3D imagery.

This being an Anniversary Edition, there’s a little more content to be found here, including hand-tracking support so you need never pick up a controller. According to the trailer on the store page, the piece should be live on Quest later today, though it’s unclear if the bonus content could make its way to existing versions of the apps.

These days Baobab is making slightly more ambitious VR films, having introduced elements of interactivity to its past two pieces, Bonfire and Baba Yaga. It’s also worked with stars like Glenn Close, Daisy Ridley and John Legend. Currently, we’re awaiting the full launch of Baba Yaga, which we thought was sweet but safe territory for the team after watching it at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year.

Samsung Rolls Out Star Wars AR Experience For Galaxy Phones

The galaxy from far, far away is getting a little bit closer this holiday season by way of Samsung right alongside the release of the latest Star Wars film, Rise of Skywalker.

This week an augmented reality (AR) experience called Invasion with Galaxy developed by R/GA (in collaboration with Pl.ai, Disney, ILM, Edelman, Starcom, VerifiedWorks, Publicis Sapient, Merkle, and HelloWorld) rolled out to many Samsung Galaxy smartphones around major cities such as Los Angelse, New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, and more. The AR experience is exclusive to the ‘Members’ app on Galaxy smartphones. It’ll roll out nationally across all US states and Puerto Rico starting on December 23 until January 2.

If the app is updated on your phone and you’re in a compatible area, you just scan the environment for a few seconds then point your device up at the sky. Depending on which day it is, one of the iconic ships from Star Wars will appear.

As you can see in the footage below, the ships are very high-quality models and will zoom through the air, complete with sound effects, as if they’re really there in the city. It’s sort of like a more involved version of the Playground stickers introduced on the Google Pixel camera app. Most of those are relatively stationary with a bit of movement but they don’t actually move through your environment like a ship flying through the air does.

“We wanted to celebrate our Galaxy owners this holiday season and bring them an experience that capitalizes on this cultural moment by taking their favorite starships from the film and bringing them to skies, where they belong,” Rodrigo Burdman, R/GA creative director, said in a prepared statement.

If you get the chance to try it out let us know what you think down in the comments below!

The Hottest Apps For Gear VR So Far

Since its arrival, the Samsung Gear VR has been a beacon of hope. Hope for millions that they will be able to get their hands on wallet friendly virtual reality experiences. Up until Gear VR, the phrase ‘affordable VR’ was reserved for things like Google cardboard, so it’s hardly surprising that their is a lot pinned on the success of Gear VR Apps and the, hopefully, affordable VR revolution that it heralded.

An increased field of view and smooth as butter design makes the latest offering even better value for money. If you have managed to pick one up, or you are about to, you are doubtless eager to see what it can do when put through its paces. What better way to take it for a spin than with some free apps?

Samsung BeFearless – Heights

A ‘BeFearless’ campaign launched by Samsung was headlined by the challenge set in Heights. VR technology is used more and more in the tackling of phobias, and Samsung in all their wisdom decided to bring much of that tech into the home, and Gear VR users have been grateful ever since! Using scientific data as its basis, Heights teaches users to face and hopefully overcome their fear of heights.

Every level, presented in glorious 360° video, sees a small increase in the uncomfortable stakes, gradually easing you up the mountain, so to speak.

Sonar

A lot of the time, a successfully immersive experience relies on the quality of the visuals; nothing rips you out of an experience faster than corrupted graphics, edge clipping or just plain old poor visuals. Luckily, Sonar is borderline beautiful to look at.

Dropping you into the cockpit of a hi-tech (is there any other kind?) spaceship, Sonor is a space flight simulation like no other. No spoilers here, but get ready to need a hug at the end. The app received an update earlier this year to bring it to the Google Daydream.

SONAR screenshot

The Expanse VR

If you are a fan of sci-fi – and who isn’t’? – then you are going to love this offering from NBC Universal Media. The Expanse VR takes the user on a journey into deep space, in a future where mankind has colonized the galaxy and make deep space its new home. A narrator takes you through the experience (think Harrison Ford in Blade Runner, except much more engaging) as you take in the sights of some seriously impressive space stations that now inhabit the milky way.

CoLab – Trial Rooms

This offering presents the player with a labyrinth simulation and is perfect if you are new to virtual reality technology as it takes you through the usage of Gear VR and its abilities. This is less a tutorial however and more of an intensive exercise in critical thinking and VR world navigation.

Players are guided through the labyrinth by a distant and disembodied voice, but don’t expect that to make things easier. Definitely worth picking up, you can take a look at Trial Rooms on YouTube.

CoLab screenshot 1Invasion!

There are few things, either virtual or actual, in this world that are cuter than wide eyed bunny rabbits. Jumping into this VR experience is like chewing sugar cubes while a unicorn licks your toes. While not interactive, you will not be able to prevent yourself falling in love with this short, 360° animated film. Join the cutest, fuzziest little rabbit in the universe has it faces up to alien ‘invaders’.

Invasion actually won an Emmy for its efforts, and it really isn’t hard to see why. You can see Invasion on YouTube and there is also a free video on the Xbox One store.

Rilix Coaster

Strong stomachs are a must for Rilix Coaster, as it has the ability to make even the sturdiest of people motion sick. Isn’t that a bad thing, though? No, you amateur! Half the fun of VR experiences like this is being taken out of your comfort zone and having your senses messed with.

In the case of Riix Coaster, you will find yourself reaching out to grab something for balance – and not in a disoriented way, in a beautifully realistic way to support yourself as the coaster throws you around. The very fact that Rilix manages to do this despite the low graphics is a huge testament to the overall quality of the simulation. Highly recommended and you can get a preview of Rilix Coaster on YouTube – don’t let the slow start fool you!

Rilix Coaster screenshotHigh quality VR experiences have never been as affordable as the Samsung Gear VR but let’s hope that it sets a trend, and not just for this type of headset experience either. VR technology has been around a good while now, with a bit of luck it will increase in popularity and enough to the point where manufactures are able to adjust price points on high-end devices too.

VR Short Film ‘Asteroids!’ from Baobab Studios Now Available

Interactive VR short film Asteroids!, the follow-up to Emmy award-winning VR short Invasion! (2016) is now available for Gear VR, Daydream, and Windows MR headsets. From the director of the Madagascar franchise, the full 11-minute cut continues the journey of aliens Mac and Cheez (and robot sidekick Peas) on their deep space mission.

Baobab Studios announced Asteroids! at Oculus Connect 3 in 2016, and has since made an interactive preview of the animation available on Gear VR and Daydream platforms. A 360 video ‘sneak peek’ has also been available in various forms, including the iOS and Android Baobab app.

Today, the full version of Asteroids! is available for free across several platforms. The best experience can be found on Gear VR, Daydream, and Windows Mixed Reality devices, where the animation is rendered in real-time 3D. Sadly, unlike their first short, Asteroids! is not currently available on PSVR, HTC Vive, or Oculus Rift, despite its considerably more interactive design.

Invasion! was the team’s first foray into VR animation, and was a polished experience, but ended all too quickly. It was later slightly extended with an intro narrated by Ethan Hawke, but this felt like an afterthought, and didn’t offer the viewer what was really needed—more time with the characters. Asteroids! is a major improvement, being longer, with more complex animation and now interactivity.

“Different storytelling mediums all have a common goal—to tell great stories through characters that audiences connect with, care about, and maybe even come to love,” Baobab writes on their official site. “The great challenge and great potential for VR storytelling is not simply to achieve this goal, but also, to do it in a way that actually lets the viewer become a part of the story. With Asteroids!, this is a step towards achieving this goal.”

Follow these links to download the Gear VR, Daydream, and Windows Mixed Reality real-time versions. The non-interactive 360 video version of the full short can be viewed via YouTube 360 and Facebook 360, or via the Baobab app for iOS and Android (which also supports the Cardboard VR viewer), but for the reasons above, it is strongly recommended to experience one of the real-time versions first.

Baobab Studios is one of the largest independent VR film studios, having raised a total of $31 million in funding to date, most notably a $25 million Series B funding round in 2016 which also welcomed Larry Cutler (ex Dreamworks and Pixar) as CTO. Their current project, Rainbow Crow, an adaptation of a Lenape Native American tale, is their most ambitious, presented in several chapters, and features musician John Legend.

E3 2017: Invasion! Originally Killed Off Its Fluffy Protagonist

E3 2017: Invasion! Originally Killed Off Its Fluffy Protagonist

Baobab Studios’ Invasion! is one of VR’s cutesiest and more pleasant experiences, but that wasn’t always the case. Originally, the short film killed off its fluffy bunny protagonist.

Baobab CEO Maureen Fan revealed this interesting little factoid when speaking in a PlayStation VR (PSVR) panel on Sony’s E3 livestream yesterday. Talking about keeping audiences comfortable in VR, Fan explained that a mother had had an interesting reaction to the piece at its first showing at an event years ago.

You can watch Fan talk about it around the 5:47:30 mark.

“Our first version we killed off the bunny,” Fan said, “because we didn’t have enough time to animate it, so we just came up with this solution like “Oh it’ll be so funny with the dark humor”.”

In Invasion! audiences find themselves on a frozen lake. A bunny approaches the audience shortly before you’re visited by aliens from outer space. Though at first threatening, they turn out to be a little too clumsy for their own good.

When the mother took the headset off, she told Baobab she’d loved the experience, but she would never show her daughter because VR’s isolation makes it too traumatic. There wouldn’t be anyone to comfort her during the darker events in the story, and that made the mother cautious.

“The good thing is in the final version we don’t kill off the bunny but it shows how important it is to be careful,” Fan concluded.

Currently Baobab is working on two new experiences. Asteroids! continues the story of Invasion!, following the two aliens that visited Earth in that piece. The second piece is Rainbow Crow, which features narration from John Legend. It’s a little different from the team’s past work, but we’re fairly sure nothing’s going to die.

Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier Pushes Forward In 2017

Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier Pushes Forward In 2017

The Sundance Film Festival is this weekend and next in Utah, giving new mixed reality projects a moment in the spotlight.

New VR productions at the festival show an enormous leap in quality from its first real appearance there in 2012. That’s when Sundance became the pioneering event to host Nonny de la Peña from USC showing her VR project Hunger In Los Angeles. She was accompanied at the event by none other than Palmer Luckey, who worked at USC before formally founding Oculus.

Now VR projects are spread across multiple venues at Sundance on different consumer headsets, with a wide range of content competing for eyeballs, and ultimately dollars, with varying artistic and technical approaches attempting to push the new medium forward.

I spoke by phone with Shari Frilot, Director and Curator of the New Frontier portion of the festival about what’s different compared to previous years. Among the experiences she explained the festival this year might enable, is the ability for people at two different venues to meet one another for the first time in a shared virtual experience — then to follow up and meet in real life.

“This is technology that affects storytelling in a really profound way,” Frilot said. “It is one thing to meet people in real life…it is also something to meet someone in text, but is is a…another thing to meet someone in VR.”

Life of Us from Chris Milk is a shared VR journey that “tells the complete story of the evolution of life on Earth.” It is one of several premieres from groundbreaking VR creators at the event. Another is Miyubi, a 40-minute endearing comedy project from Felix & Paul, the talented studio behind a variety of VR work including those showcasing Cirque Du Soleil performances. Miyubi lets you look into the life of a family from the 1980s from the perspective of a Japanese toy robot. There have been some previous attempts at lengthier VR projects before, Frilot said, but “they’ve all failed miserably.”

“Except for this one,” she said. “They’ve managed to create something that has….breadth and emotional gravity that maintains your interest for 40 minutes…it’s an important effort.”

The New Frontier portion of the festival includes 20 VR experiences and 11 installations across three venues. Tear-jerking project Dear Angelica from Oculus Story Studio had its premiere there, and ASTEROIDS! from Baobab is being shown too, which continues the story of the aliens we saw in the startup’s initial project INVASION!. Meta is showing Journey to the Center of the Natural Machine on its Meta 2 mixed reality glasses and the Synesthesia Suit which lets you feel the game is there too. Acting and motion capture app Mindshow is there at the event as well showcasing its intuitive method of creating animated projects in VR. That’s just a sampling of some of the VR projects available at Sundance this year. Much of the content being shown and talked about there is likely to make it to headsets in the next few years, though some projects might fail to resonate and disappear from the public eye.

“The one thing I can say is nobody knows” what will catch on, Frilot said. “You just have to sit and watch it unfold.”

Viveport’s Sundance Hub ‘VR on the Mountain’ to Feature World Premiere of My Brother’s Keeper by PBS Digital

The annual Sundance Film Festival opens in a few days and over the past few weeks VRFocus has reported on several virtual reality (VR) and 360-degree experiences debuting at the event. For those in attendance there’s going to be plenty of immersive content to explore, HTC Vive and Viveport are taking a lineup of apps as part of VR hub VR on the Mountain, which will be premiering PBS Digital’s My Brother’s Keeper.

A story-driven VR reenactment of the Battle of Antietam, My Brother’s Keeper is a companion piece to PBS’ Civil War series Mercy Street, set to debut a second series later this month. To create the experience PBS Digital partnered with StoryTech Immersive, Perception Squared and the Technicolor Experience Center, using a new action camera rig built by the filmmakers.  My Brother’s Keeper is written and directed by Connor Hair and Alex Meader.

mindshow_blog-730x411

One app being showcased at the hub will be Mindshow, an app enables users to improvise short animated vignettes in VR and share them with friends. “Mindshow lets you make VR cartoons with your body and voice,” describes the developer. Featuring a variety of playsets – from a distant planet to a comedy club stage – people can act out scenes using their bodies, then share content either as a VR scene visible through HTC Vive, or exported as 2D videos for online social channels.

In December VRFocus reported on the announcement that Baobab Studios’ sequel to popular VR animation INVASION!, ASTEROIDS! would be debuting at the festival. In fact ASTEROIDS! will be showcased at VR on the Mountain this Saturday 21st January, continuing the adventures of bumbling duo Mac and Cheez and their robot-dog, Peas.

Other titles exhibiting include: Deluxe VR and TIME-LIFE VR’s Remembering Pearl HarborThe Price of Freedom from Construct Studios, Google Tilt Brush and Pearl from Google Spotlight Stories.

Baobab’s ‘Invasion’ Has Reportedly Been Downloaded ‘Well Over 1 Million’ Times

Baobab’s ‘Invasion’ Has Reportedly Been Downloaded ‘Well Over 1 Million’ Times

Baobab’s adorable virtual reality animated short Invasion has reportedly been downloaded over 1 million times according to co-founder Maureen Fan. Fan was most recently the vice president of games at Zynga before starting Baobab with Madagascar and Antz director Eric Darnell. UploadVR had the chance to speak with Fan on the show floor of CES 2017 where she hinted at the success of Baobab’s first production, Invasion.

According to Fan, “I contractually can’t speak to exact download numbers. That’s part of our deal with Oculus,” but when UploadVR asked if she could tell us if the number is above or below 1 million Fan did admit that Invasion’s download numbers are “well over 1 million.”

Invasion is available for free on just about every VR platform available to date including Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Google DayDream, PlayStation VR and HTC Vive. This type of cross-platform distribution would hopefully lead to the type of numbers Fan is describing and points to a reassuringly healthy VR ecosystem. To put it simply: if a free app featuring a cute little bunny isn’t able to reach millions of downloads, then the immersive industry would be in a lot of trouble.

Invasion is an engaging, albeit brief story that follows you, a rabbit and two wayfaring aliens named Mac and Cheese. The aliens arrival on earth is is interrupted by you and your fuzzy companion and the would be invaders are sent packing. The experience also features the narration of Ethan Hawke.

Babobab’s next film, which will was being previewed at CES is titled “Asteroids” and will follow the continuing exploits of Mac and Cheese as they make their way across the galaxy. This next installment will feature the voice talents of Elizabeth Banks and will premiere in just a few weeks at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
