Horror Survival ‘Into the Radius VR’ Headed to Early Access Next Month

Into the Radius VR is a single-player VR shooter headed to Steam Early Access next month. Created by Estonia-based indie studio CM Games, the horror survival game promises a dark mix of horror, open-world exploration, realistic weapon handling, and plenty of post-soviet landscapes to play as backdrop to what we hope shapes up to be an intriguing story.

The game is coming to Steam Early Access on November 6th, supporting Vive, Rift and Index. The studio says the game should arrive at launch with the first story mission, including lore materials, tutorial, and features such as weapon repair and consumable items.

Here’s how CM Games describes it:

Life and death intertwine inside the Radius, lurking somewhere in the middle of everything is the answer to a question you can’t quite remember. Through the flickering memories of your tarnished life as a former resident of Pechorsk and now UNSPC specialist, your only means of survival is to stalk the strange and threatening zone and complete the missions assigned to you.

In the game you battle “deadly anomalies and bizarre entities” in what once was a quiet mining town. The ping of a Geiger counter betrays the truth of the abandoned area though, now a Chernobyl-esque exclusion zone completely restricted to the public.

CM Games says Into the Radius was inspired by the seminal sci-fi novel ‘Roadside Picnic’ by Soviet sci-fi authors Arkandy and Boris Strugatsky, and is mixed with the themes of Stalker, Stephen King, and the atmosphere of adventure game MYST (1993).

There’s a few ways to get a taste of the game before jumping into Early Access next month, namely an Into the Radius-themed VRChat world and beta access, granted by joining the game’s Discord server.

VR Horror Into the Radius Hits Steam Early Access in November

It’s the season of scary videogames, whether that’s playing one you already own or investing in something new. Estonian indie developer CM Games revealed its upcoming horror title Into the Radius last month, giving away beta keys for Steam users to test the experience and offer feedback. The team will soon be ready to launch Into the Radius via Early Access, announcing a November date.

Into The Radius

The studio confirms the Early Access release will allow players access to several hours worth of content while they continue to complete the story and gameplay features ahead of its planned full release in Q1 2020.

Into the Radius has been inspired by sci-fi novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, combines Eldritch horror storytelling with VR’s unique immersive properties. A single-player survival shooter, players will find themselves in the middle of the post-apocalyptic Pechorsk Radius zone, a place where life and death intertwine.

The story is set 15 years after the Pechorsk Event took place, with players taking on the role of a UN Pechorsk Special Committee specialist, one of the few personnel still allowed anywhere near the Radius. Filled with lethal anomalies and hostile forces, gameplay offers realistic bullet physics and classic weapons like the Pistolet Makarova, Double Barrel Shotgun and the AKM Kalashnikov. There will be various ammo types to use with each weapon a well as various attachments.

Featuring a story-driven campaign mode, players will also explore via a free roam mode if they don’t want to do any missions. “The full version will have 15+ hours of playable storyline, taking you to multiple big maps with iconic locations. There will also be more content (including weapons, items, monsters and anomalies) adding more depth to the overall gameplay experience,” states the studio

Into the Radius will be available via Steam Early Access on 6th November, supporting HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Into the Radius, reporting back with the latest development updates.

Into The Radius Is A Stalker-Style Horror FPS Launching Next Month

Developer CM Games says its VR debut, Into the Radius, is inspired eldritch horror. In other words, the game looks strikingly similar to the Stalker series. That’s a good thing.

This post-apocalyptic shooter is coming to Steam Early Access on November 6. Into The Radius is set in a soviet wasteland in which players explore an open-world, fending off creepy enemies with guns. Check it out in the trailer below.

CM describes this as a survival shooter. As you explore the mysterious Pechorsk Radius you’ll need to learn navigation skills and plan for missions with the correct gear. Weapons, meanwhile, sport realistic handling and can be modified with attachments. You’ll also need to take care of them so they won’t jam.

We could see this going two ways. Much of Into The Radius looks promisingly polished, and it clearly has grand ambitions. It’s too early to tell, though, if the drab environments will lend a sense of atmosphere or make exploring this ruined world a bit of a slog.

Obviously we’re hoping for the former. In Early Access, the game will have much of its map to explore and a handful of missions. However, the developer is promising that the full release, set for Q1 2020, will have over 15 hours of playable story. Let’s see if it can live up to those promises.

As a neat little tie-in, the developer has also created a VRChat companion world for the game.

The game will be launching with support for all major PC VR headsets. Will you be picking up Into The Radius? Let us know in the comments below!

Enter Dark and Twisted VR Experience Into The Radius With Some Free Beta Keys

Known for titles such as Nitro Nation and Drag Racing, reaching in total over 400 million players to date, Creative Mobile (CM Games), a leading mobile game studio based in Tallinn, Estonia, will soon be taking its first step into virtual reality (VR) with Into The Radius.

Into The Radius

Designed as a hardcore, single-player VR videogame where you explore a strange place called ‘the Radius’ filled with dangerous anomalies, Into the Radius offers dark and atmospheric experience inspired by the Strugatsky Brothers’ Roadside Picnic, mixed with Stalker and Stephen King.

The title’s environment is a unique blend of post-apocalyptic and eldritch horror in a gloomy, surreal setting. Focused on open-world exploration, players scavenge through the desolate locations, searching for artefacts. Most of the gameplay happens in multi-kilometre sized outdoor locations with many points of interest to explore. As players try to survive they will be tested for their use of stealth, cunning, and firearms skills to uncover the mystery of the Radius.

“When the first room-scale VR came out, we were very hyped by the opportunities of the technology, but soon started to feel disappointed by the domination of arcade games or “experiences”,” said the team in a statement to VRFocus“Being hardcore PC gamers ourselves, our team felt strongly that the hardcore VR audience is vastly underserved right now. There are exciting new ways players can experience VR worlds compared to flat arcade games, we decided to focus on making a single-player, non -linear story-driven shooter in a surreal setting, thus ‘Into the Radius’ was born.”

Into The Radius

Featuring realistic firearms mechanics; from loading different ammo types into mags, guns jamming and a variety of attachments, time is also a gameplay element with a day-night cycle having consequences for the player to account for. Into the Radius is a superb blend of everything we like about hardcore VR games, mixed with a surprising amount of depth and immersiveness that will keep you exploring this strange land for hours and hours,” notes CM Games’ Aleksei Shulga.

In collaboration with VRFocus, CM Games is giving away 500 Steam keys by joining its Discord channel so you can access the beta version of Into the Radius which will include:

  • Big open map with randomly placed anomalies, artefacts and enemies
  • Realistic gun interaction system, 6 weapons + attachment system
  • Mission Hub with 4 missions + onboarding

Into the Radius is scheduled for a Q1 2020 launch, supporting HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Valve index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

The global release will include:

  • Double-digit gameplay hours with a full story mode
  • Free roam mode
  • Rich skills system
  • Replayability via generated side missions
