Pre-orders Open for the $15K Insta360 Titan VR Cinema Camera

As the biggest consumer tech event in the world, CES 2019 covers just about every gadget and gizmo imaginable, which of course means plenty of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and 360-degree tech. Showcasing its latest product is Insta360. Better known for its consumer-grade 360-degree cameras, the company has been making inroads into the professional market, with its latest device, the Insta360 Titan its most premium model.

Insta360 Titan

Today sees Insta360 open reservations for the new camera, which boasts eight lenses, and eight Micro Four Thirds (MFT) sensors to help maximize image quality, dynamic range, low-light performance and colour depth. This allows the Insta360 Titan to shoot 11K at 30 FPS, 10K 3D at 30 FPS, 8K at 60 FPS and 5.3K 360 video at 120 FPS, plus additional monoscopic formats.

The Insta360 Titan supports shooting in 10-bit colour, features FlowState Stabilization technology, allowing for gimbal-like 9-axis stabilization, and Insta360’s Farsight live monitoring system, consisting of a transmitter and a receiver that can be attached to a smartphone or tablet. Farsight allows users to easily preview and control their shoots remotely.

On top of all this is Crystal View, Insta360’s proprietary playback tech. As playback systems are now supporting 4K, higher resolutions are even rarer. “It renders in real time exactly the part of a video a viewer is watching – with no computing power wasted on displaying what’s behind their head — so that even mainstream smartphones can play back full-quality Titan content,” explains Insta360 in a press statement.

Insta360 Titan

Further details, as well as the option to reserve the Insta360 Titan, are available through the official website. Being the pro 360 camera that it is, the Insta360 Titan comes with an equally titanic price, $14,999 USD. You can place a refundable deposit now, ahead of the camera shipping in April.

The Insta360 Titan is the next step up from the Insta360 Pro 2 which arrived in the summer. Priced at $4999.95, it is capable of 8K per-eye 3D 360 video, thanks to its six lenses, 8K monoscopic at 60fps, 6K at 60fps or 4K 3D at 120fps.

VRFocus will be at CES 2019 all week to bring you the latest news from the event.

Insta360 Opens Reservations for Professional 11K VR Camera ‘Titan’

Insta360, the manufacturers behind consumer & professional VR cameras, today opened reservations for the Titan, a professional-level 11K VR camera for 360 video and photos.

The Titan includes a number of shooting modes including 11K monoscopic at 30 fps, 10K stereoscopic at 30 fps, and 11K 360 photos in both stereoscopic and monoscopic modes. Additional shooting modes include 8K at 60 fps and 5.3K at 120 fps.

The Titan is priced at $15,000; the company says reservations for the Titan come with a fully refundable deposit.

Professional creators can reserve their Titan starting today on the company’s website. The first batch of cameras are expected to start shipping in April following a pilot program with select filmmaker partners.

The Titan uses an array of eight Micro Four Thirds (MFT) sensors, something the company bills as “the largest sensors available in any standalone VR camera.” The sensors are said to maximize image quality, dynamic range, low-light performance and color depth.

The Titan supports shooting in 10 bit color and high dynamic range to let creators capture natural lighting and low-light scenes for VR playback.

The professional-grade 360 rig also uses something Insta360 calls ‘FlowState Stabilization’, claiming “gimbal-like 9-axis stabilization with no accessories or added effort from the user.” Users can also view live previews by attaching a bespoke receiver to a phone or tablet.

Because decoding an 11K video file is such a tall order to fill, the company has also created a playback tech called ‘CrystalView’ which renders in real time “exactly the part of a video a viewer is watching – with no computing power wasted on displaying what’s behind their head — so that even mainstream smartphones can play back full-quality Titan content,” the company writes in a press statement.

While its 360 camera contemporaries Nokia OZO and Jaunt ONE have since fallen to the wayside, The Titan represents the company’s third professional 360 camera following the Insta360 Pro & Pro 2 which released in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Hollywood Director Partners with Insta360 To Democratise Content Creation

Though 360-degree video is becoming increasingly popular as a way to become involved with virtual reality (VR) content creation, for many the cost of equipment and accompanying software still keeps it out of reach. Renowned Hollywood director Roland Emmerich is seeking to address this by partnering with Insta360 to create a social platform that will democratise 360-degree content creation.

Roland Emmerich is known for his work as a director of Hollywood blockbusters such as Independence Day, Stargate and Godzilla. The director is working with Insta360 to invite content creators to join a special Beta program for a newly launched 360-degree social platform.

Emmerich, along with his partner Marco Weber have announced a strategic partnership between their company, Vrenetic and its social platform for 360-degree content Vresh and 360-degree camera makers Insta360.

The two companies are attempting to expand the availability of 360-degree cameras to allow a broader range of content creators to become involve with the medium.

Insta360 cameras will be co-marketed with Vresh, which is described as a social media app for a community of 360-degree content creators, influencers, world travellers and visual storytellers. The app is currently in Beta and is accepting applications from content creators and early adopters.

Vresh can be used to broadcast 360-degree video in 4K quality to others, or save a 360-degree video for later viewing on-demand or even conduct a private 360-degree video call. All this is said to be possible without any specific technical experience.

“Video revolutionized the Internet and 360-degree content is posed to be the next big category in video,” said Milton Fang, SVP of Marketing & Strategy at Vrenetic. “The entire Vresh team is extremely excited and proud to be developing the next Instagram for sharing experiences in fully immersive 360-degree video.”

Vresh is planned to be available worldwide in Q1 of 2019. For further coverage Vresh and other upcoming VR and 360-degree project, keep checking back with VRFocus.

Insta360 Updates Their Pro Camera To Be More Pro-Friendly

Insta360 Updates Their Pro Camera To Be More Pro-Friendly

Insta360 has seemingly been on a non-stop clip when it comes to introducing new products. I remember when they showed me their Insta360 Pro camera and let me use it for a couple weeks. I was so impressed with the overall image quality, but it had a lot of things that needed improving, especially at a $3,500 price point.

The Insta360 Pro was not a consumer camera, but it also wasn’t quite a professional camera either. That’s why it fell into more of a prosumer category. But with the introduction of this new Insta360 Pro 2, we’re starting to see Insta360 get more serious about the target market.

The new Insta360 Pro 2 can now do 8K 3D video at 30 FPS, which was previously limited to 6K 3D in the original Insta360 Pro. The new camera can also do 8K monoscopic  at 60 FPS, 6K 3D at 60 FPS and even 4K 3D at 120 FPS. The Insta360 Pro 2 also features in-camera HDR to help reduce the number of highlights because of variance between light sources and camera sensors. The Insta360 Pro 2 also adopts Insta360’s FlowState stabilization technology, which first made its introduction of the Insta360 ONE and is some of the best stabilization I’ve ever seen to date. This helped to solve one of the biggest problems with recording video in 360, camera shake is immersion breaking and causes VR sickness and you can’t have it. That’s why Insta360 basically had to implement this future moving forward. The 12K super high-res still capability remains the same.

One of the biggest problems that I encountered with the original Insta360 Pro was trying to capture shots without having myself be in the shots. This was incredibly difficult with the original Pro because it had a limited range of about 20-30 feet before you lost signal. To remedy this issue, Insta360 is implementing a new antenna technology called FarSight that gives the Insta360 Pro 2 a range of about 300 meters, according to Insta360’s own specs. However, I only witnessed it working at 100 meters, which is still a great improvement over the previous generation. Insta360’s Wi-Fi technology operates at 5.18 GHz which should hopefully interfere less with other 5 GHz signals, and Insta360 claims a ground to air distance of up to 1KM (when used on a drone). FarSight comes standard in the first shipping models of the Insta360 Pro 2, but will eventually be optional in the coming months with a price reduction of $500 if you opt not to get FarSight.

Insta360 also improved the workflow for their cameras with the Insta360 Pro 2, with their integrated Premiere Pro workflow that allows for the use of proxy files to speed up the editing process without having to stitch until the final edits are complete. This is an extension of all the capabilities that the Insta360 Pro already has in Premiere Pro, an application that Insta360 only had support for after the launch of the initial Pro camera. With more Premiere Pro features, the Insta360 is becoming more of a professionally-focused camera than ever before.

Insta360 has also changed the physical workflow of the Insta360 Pro 2, with six (6) microSD card slots and one SD card slot for a total of 7 memory cards. Each MicroSD card will record footage from each camera sensor while the SD card will capture stabilization and low-resolution proxy files for quick Adobe Premiere Pro editing. This is different from the past, where a single high-speed SD card was necessary and would capture each camera sensor into its own folder within the single SD card directory. While I’m not sure that this workflow will be optimal for people traveling with a professional 360 camera, I understand where this thought process is coming from and hopefully Insta360 has an easy way of getting the footage off the camera.

Insta360 is also introducing a video codec called CrystalView. This codec is able to play back high resolution 8K video files on devices like the Oculus Go and Gear VR at full quality without having to down-sample to 4K and lose image quality. Insta360’s own video player, Insta360 Moment, will dynamically render these files to show the full 8K video fidelity based on where the user is looking. I believe this feature will eventually become standard in nearly all video players in the future, especially as eye-tracking becomes more popular. I still strongly believe that 8K is the best video format for viewing 360 videos and that Insta360’s Pro 2 has some of the best footage I’ve ever seen. That includes this new ClearView technology which I saw for myself recently in a Samsung GearVR, and once again set the standard for high-quality video footage for me.

Because the Insta360 Pro is capable of simultaneous local recording and live streaming, it comes as little surprise that Insta360 made an upgrade in this area as well. The Insta360 Pro 2 is now capable of live streaming 4K footage in both stereoscopic 3D and monoscopic formats while also saving 8K source files on the microSD local storage. Previously, it was impossible to do 4K 3D and record 8K local files, but with this new version of the Insta360 Pro, professional users can and they can do it with GPS data included. The new Insta360 Pro 2 has a built-in GPS antenna on the top of the camera that makes Google Maps Street View contributions extremely easy. Not to mention other professional applications where GPS data is valuable for a user to have when capturing their shots.

The new Insta360 Pro 2 weighs in at 3.42 pounds, including battery and antennae which still makes it very friendly for hand-held shoots or shoots with a drone. All these capabilities and convenience come with a price, though. The new Insta360 Pro comes in at a nearly 50% more expensive price of $4,999, which includes the FarSight wireless technology. This price hike is unlikely to make a significant difference to some potential customers, but it is out of reach for prosumers that aren’t using these cameras for their jobs. I would be interested to see if Insta360 will consider an upgrade program to get more of their professional users using the new Insta360 Pro 2 instead of the older less-capable model.

The company says that the new Insta360 Pro 2 will start shipping September and can be acquired through the company’s site or B&H Photo Video as well as select retailers worldwide.

Insta360 Tease New 360 Camera For Later This Month

360 degree video’s role within immersive technology continues to be one that actively splits the community. To some it is, though at the lower end of the spectrum, a great and simple way to introduce people into what being in virtual reality (VR) can be like and a great tool for advertisers and creatives alike.  To some it drives them mad that it is even considered in the same sentence as “true VR” and that the lack of interaction means that it is not truly immersive. Wherever you stand on that debate, however, it seems like 360 degree video is definitely here to stay.

Insta360 ONE selfie-2So, it’s not surprising that beyond our thrice weekly Life In 360° series we hear so much news relating to 360 degree technology and projects. One company we’ve been helping you keep tabs on for a good couple of years now is Chinese firm Insta360, which makes 360 degree cameras. Insta360 launched its first one back in 2016 – the Insta360 Nano – which was a clip-on camera for the iPhone 6 series of devices. Since that time the company has launched more iterations of the 360 degree camera and picked up numerous awards.

So far this year the firm has worked on developing the quality of the video it is producing and recently announced a ‘choose your own adventure’ competition – but it also appears that we’ll have some new hardware to look forward to later this year as well if a new teaser image released by the company is anything to go by.

Insta360 is naturally being coy about what the announcement entails, however it is worth noting that its announcement comes just shy of a week from a year to the day that they launched their last 360 degree camera, the 4K Insta360 ONE.  The wording would suggest the project might well be called the ‘Insta360 Move’, but that – and the stats of the camera – are things we will have to wait to find out. VRFocus will, of course, bring you details as soon as we get them.
