Niantic Labs Announces Ingress Prime Now Available

Niantic Labs are best known for creating the incredibly popular augmented reality (AR) title Pokemon Go, but before that, Niantic Labs worked on another mobile title called Ingress, which attracted a global audience. Niantic have now announced that Ingress is getting an overhaul.

Now Niantic Labs have analysed the data gathered from working on both Ingress and Pokemon Go as well as listening to feedback from users regarding gameplay design and features. The result of this has been an overhaul of Ingress, titled Ingress Prime.

Ingress first launched in 2012, and ultimately racked up over 20 million downloads worldwide, being available in over 200 countries. The technology pioneered by Niantic in Ingress was then used as the foundation for Pokemon Go.

The company says it has spent six years working on improving Ingress, and are keen to share with both existing and new players to new innovations introduced in Ingress Prime, which are said to build on the multiplayer gameplay, narrative integration and real-world experiences of the original geared towards veteran and new players.

Several quality-of-life improvements have been added to Ingress Prime, such as quick-swipe menus, inventory management, the ability to link a Facebook account as well as new security features. There is also a new training function that will serve as an introduction for new players.

In Ingress, players take on the role of ‘Agents’ of either The Enlightened or The Resistance, who each have their own mission and philosophy. Agents need to learn how to control Portals, areas which are hidden as areas of interest in the real world, in order to extract a powerful resource called Exotic Matter (XM).

Agents can work alongside faction-specific AR programs, which shape the story of Ingress. The outcome of certain key events can be influences by Agents in real-world events, known as Anomalies.

Ingress Prime is available now in Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Further information on the app can be found on the Niantic Labs blog.

[Update]:

Niantic und Netflix – Anime-Film Ingress: The Animation

Niantic Labs Reveal Codename: Neon, A Crossplatform Multiplayer AR Gaming Prototype

Developer of the hugely popular Pokémon GO, Niantic Labs, has taken to Twitter to showcase a new prototype that the company have been working dubbed Codename: Neon. The title, showcase in a short video posted on the new Niantic Engineering Twitter account, is a multiplayer augmented reality (AR) gaming experience that allows for intense neon filled battles.

Codename: Neon

Codename: Neon leverages cross-platform AR technology that has been built using low-latency AR networking techniques to allow for eight players to run a shared session. This session then allows for multiplayer, first-person shooter battles to be played in which allow for each user to fire neon orbs at each other, earning points and competing for the highest score in real-time.

The prototype facilitates high performance shared AR experiences along with cross-platform technology. The gameplay session seen in the below video was recorded on both Apple iPhone 8’s and Google Pixel 2 smart phones, running in conjunction to each other in the same session. This functionality brings a new level of possibilities to the world of crossplatform AR gaming and is a milestone for both the company and the technology.

Codename: Neon

Writing on their blog post about their new Niantic Real World Platform, Niantic Labs mention that one of the biggest challenges to overcome in creating multiplayer, visually compelling expertness was latency. Without the correct timing their is no way to build an experience that can be enjoyed by all those taking part to the same degree. To address this, Niantic Labs have developed a proprietary, low-latency AR networking solution that enables unified, cross-platform play with a singe code base, ensuring development is fast and easy.

The develop note that the Niantic Real World Platform could be used for a wide range of different application, they are focusing their efforts on building gaming experiences to showcase its power for now.

Codename: Neon comes hot off the heels that Niantic Labs had acquired Matrix Mill to advance their AR platform. With the success of their first title Ingress and now the ever growing Pokémon GO, it is no surprise that Niantic Labs are using their position to develop new and exciting AR opportunities and build a powerful platform as a foundation for future titles.

‘Pokémon Go’ Studio Niantic Completes $200M Funding Round

Niantic, the developer behind Pokémon Go and the upcoming Harry Potter AR gameannounced they’ve taken on $200 million in their Series B investment round.

As reported by Tech Crunch, the Series B investment round was lead by Spark Capital in participation with Founders Fund, Meritech, Javelin Venture Capital, You & Mr. Jones and Chinese Internet technology company NetEase, Inc.

Born out of a startup founded within Google, Niantic is best known for their GPS-based mobile games Ingress and Pokémon Go, the later being an important IP for the company that helped land them their initial $30 million Series A led by Alsop Loui Partners, Google, Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, Cyan and Scott Banister and others.

What 'Pokémon Go' Could Be Like if it Was Really Augmented Reality

Pokémon Go is branded heavily as an augmented reality game, but due to the lack of room-mapping, it doesn’t offer some of the hallmark features of what you might call a ‘true’ AR game, namely the basic ability to position 3D objects or characters at fixed points in the world and view them from any angle. While this may be true in the short term, genuine smartphone AR support is on the horizon thanks to both Apple’s ARkit and Google’s ARCore, software developer kits that allow developers to create the sort of ‘true’ AR experiences for flagship iOS and Android devices.

It’s still uncertain if the company’s upcoming Harry Potter game will essentially be a reskinned version of Pokémon Go, offering it’s faux-AR passthrough mode or truly delve into AR proper. We’ll be following along as it launches sometime in 2018.

Niantic Return To Augmented Reality With Harry Potter AR Title

Niantic Labs have had phenomenal success with Pokemon Go. Regardless of the assorted problems users have experienced with the title, it was still one of the first to demonstrate some of the potential of augmented reality (AR). Niantic Labs are now taking things a step further and are building a new AR title called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

Harry Potter, like Pokemon, remains incredibly popular, with the recent stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child selling out shows, Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter likewise raking in the cash. With that in mind, it surely was only a matter of time before someone devised a way to let mobile phone users throw spells at each other with the power of AR.

Though there are currently few details as to how the gameplay will operate, what is known so far suggests that the title will owe much to another of Niantic’s previous works, Ingress. Ingress is a location-based mobile title that let users travel to various locations, tapping into various sources of power, defending various locations and discovering new things about the environment around them.

One the face of it, this would seem like a good fit for the Harry Potter universe. Pokemon Go and Ingress both divide players into coloured teams, which seems like a neat fit for the Hogwarts houses. Locations such as Kings Cross Station are bound to contain some interesting power-ups, and ‘unplottable’ hidden wizarding locations can be scattered across the world for users to discover.

According to TechCrunch, The title is expected to be released sometime in 2018, co-developed by Warner Bros. Interactive. Harry Potter fans will no doubt be hoping for a wand accessory similar to the Pokemon Go tracker.

VRFocus will bring you further information on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite as it becomes available.
