VR And Movie Watching – Future Or Present Of Home Entertainment?

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years, you are probably well aware of the advancements in Virtual Reality (VR) – especially if you;ve been keeping track of things here on VRFocus. VR has definitely changed the way we view and interact with different technologies. It has now made its way to pretty much revolutionize the way we watch movies. While the technology continues to advance and become more mainstream, VR is definitely the present and the future of home entertainment.

A Replacement for Television?

Who doesn’t dream of having an IMAX theater at home? You know, the massive screen with in-depth clarity and sharpness which gives you the feeling as if the movie was being made in front of you. VR sort of gives you the IMAX experience at home, providing you with a gigantic screen in front of you, without there actually being a screen. When viewing a movie with a VR headset, the image basically takes the space of your complete view. This means you see nothing but the movie, giving you the ultimate viewing experience.

As the technology advances and as more movies are produced for optimal VR experience, we can certainly expect VR to take over home entertainment and possibly replace televisions.

The true “reality” feeling

Home entertainment enthusiasts tend to spend thousands of dollars on television or projection that provide exceptional picture quality. Spending a lot of money, just so they can feel like they are there. VR takes this “feeling of being there” to another level. It allows you to navigate on the screen, looking left, right, up, and down with the screen moving and showcasing exactly what you want to see. This capability will definitely revolutionize the way movies are watched with the element of interaction being added to it. VR based games have already taken advantage of this and while big production movies have not, in the near future we can certainly see them doing it.

Limited to no distractions

We all have been there, being completely engrossed in a movie when, all of a sudden, a notification appears of a message on your phone or a call that takes your attention away.

VR allows you to keep little distractions away. Since you wear a headset, your view to the outside world is completely blocked off and you concentrate on the movie. The headphones also block off any external noise so you won’t be distracted much whether it is your phone ringing or someone walking in front of you. You can sit back and enjoy the movie with no distractions.

Movies on the go

VR also presents a wonderful way for people that are generally on the move to catch up on movies. Since movies, in general, are digital, you can easily access them on your mobile phone by either downloading them or streaming them. There are numerous VR headsets that work well with mobile phones, they may not be the best as far as resolution goes but certainly better quality and viewing experience than just watching a movie on your mobile. VR being portable makes it easy for you to access the content anywhere.

So, where can you get VR content?

While the online libraries for VR content aren’t as extensive as we would have liked, we need to remember that VR is still developing. Both Hulu and Netflix have shows and movies that are compatible with VR so if you have a headset already or are planning to get one for your home, then you should definitely give them a try. On the Netflix VR app alone you can get a variety of TV shows and films to suit all ages and interests. Everything from the action of Black Hawk Down and the suspense of Jaws, to classic comedy films such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or family films such as Zootopia (or Zootropolis) and The Jungle Book. In the coming years, the digital library for VR content should continue to grow and match that of DVDs and Blu-ray.

Gift VR this Christmas

All of which just leaves the headset itself. With Christmas approaching, we’re now at the point where VR systems are most definately a wishlist possibility and they make a wonderful gift. If you are considering to get the perfect system then you should certainly give the Oculus Rift a try – and why not, if you’re a home entertainment enthusiast, go the extra mile for the experience as the need to spend excess money on buying different devices for the perfect home entertainment system is no longer required. You don’t need to buy a projector, sound system, a screen and so on to have the ultimate movie experience.  All you will need is a VR headset, a decent pair of headphones, and a comfortable recliner to get the optimal viewing and listening experience when watching your favorite movie at home. With Social VR also developing, you will be able to watch your favorite movies and shows with friends on VR headsets without being in the same room, which will only make the overall VR experience much better.

Glo Inc Secures Funding and IMAX Partnership for VR System

Virtual reality (VR) technology company Glo Inc has concluded a round of funding to secure $3 million (USD) in investment from companies and venture capitalists such as Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fun, CRCM Ventures, Presence Capital and Mindworks Ventures as well as securing a new partnership with IMAX corporation.

The new injection of funds will be used by the company to further develop its library of available content, as well as expand its reach into new territories by deploying its VR system, Glostation in new locations by expanding its licensing and franchising, such as the recently completed deal with IMAX.

IMAX have previously offered Glo Inc’s ‘hyper reality escape room’ at once of its facilities, and soon Glo Inc’s VR experience Deadwood Mansion will be offered at some IMAX VR centres. The experience puts a group of players inside a mansion where a doctor is engaged in dangerous and illegal experiments, resulting in twisted zombie-like creatures.

“GloStation is a highly interactive, social and thrilling virtual reality experience – making it a perfect fit for IMAX’s location-based VR centres,” said Rob Lister, Chief Business Development Officer, IMAX Corp. “Customer feedback on the Deadwood Mansion VR experience at our centre in Los Angeles has been fantastic, and we look forward to working with Glo Inc. to bring GloStation to other IMAX VR Centres around the world.”

“We opened our showroom in Hong Kong late June, and for the next 100 days, we were 100% sold out each single day. Weekend tickets are now booking months in advance into 2018. Now, with this new investment, we will be able to scale our proprietary free-roaming VR system GloStation to cities globally. We’re delighted to be working with IMAX to introduce our experience to their world-class VR centres.” said Steve Zhao, CEO of Glo Inc.

“GloStation provides a unique immersive VR experience that combines the latest VR technologies with highly social elements. Steve is a successful serial entrepreneur with roots in Hong Kong, and we believe Glo will be a leader in the next generation of Hong Kong startups.” commented Cindy Chow, Executive Director of Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund.

Further news on new partnerships in the world of VR and immersive content will be here on VRFocus.

Glo Announces $3M Funding For VR Arcades And IMAX Partnership

Glo Announces $3M Funding For VR Arcades And IMAX Partnership

Glo Inc. announced today that they’ve secured $3M in seed funding from Alibaba, CRCM Ventures, Presence Capital, Mindworks, and unnamed angel investors. The funding will be used to accelerate development of  its proprietary VR system, Glostation, which is also now being licensed by IMAX for its VR entertainment centers.

The VR industry has multiple verticals. On the one hand you’ve got the consumer technology angle with devices such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PSVR that feature lots of games and entertainment apps. There’s also the enterprise angle for educational uses, hospitals, and other businesses. Then going beyond all of that are the location-based entertainment centers, VR arcades, and other venue-based implementations of the technology.

Glo Inc. is a company with their hands in a few different pots. For example, we reviewed one of their debut VR games last year, Unearthed Inc., but now this is VR on a much larger scale.

The first IMAX VR experience to use the Glostation technology will be the zombie-themed game Deadwood Mansion, which is slated to hit the Los Angeles IMAX Center first, followed by New York and other locations afterwards.

“GloStation is a highly interactive, social and thrilling virtual reality experience – making it a perfect fit for IMAX’s location-based VR centres,” said Rob Lister, Chief Business Development Officer at IMAX Corp. in a prepared statement “Customer feedback on the Deadwood Mansion VR experience at our centre in Los Angeles has been fantastic, and we look forward to working with Glo Inc. to bring GloStation to other IMAX VR Centres around the world.”

Glostation-powered VR arcades will join the ranks of other location-based venues, such as The Void, as premiere destinations for “wharehouse-scale” VR gaming.

“We opened our showroom in Hong Kong late June, and for the next 100 days, we were 100% sold out each single day,” said Steve Zhao, CEO of Glo Inc. in a prepared statement. “Weekend tickets are now booking months in advance into 2018. Now, with this new investment, we will be able to scale our proprietary free-roaming VR system GloStation to cities globally. We’re delighted to be working with IMAX to introduce our experience to their world-class VR centres.”

Check out the First Trailer for IMAX VR’s Exclusive Justice League Experience

At the beginning of the year IMAX opened its first virtual reality (VR) experience centre in Los Angeles, California. Over the course of 2017 more centres have been opened in North America and across the world. While some of the content on offer can be found on home VR headsets IMAX also ensured it had some exclusive experiences, one of which is Justice League VR and naturally there’s a new trailer to showcase some of the features.

The cinematic VR experience allows guests to step into the shoes and master the powers of five iconic DC super heroes: Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg. Each hero has their own particular mission to complete, so as Batman you must outrace your enemies, fight Parademons as Wonder Woman, face a creature from the deep as Aquaman, stop a ticking bomb as The Flash, or take out enemy drones as Cyborg.

IMAX VR’s Justice League VR isn’t a permanent exclusive however. As VRFocus reported a couple of months ago those who can’t make it to one of the experience centres will be able to play Justice League Virtual Reality: The Complete Experience in December. The content was slated to appear on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream and PlayStation VR (although these are subject to change), with additional modes and expanded missions, as well as full roomscale tracking for those headsets that support the feature.

The most recent centre to open was in Manchester, UK, at the intu Trafford Centre in collaboration with Odeon Cinemas. There are ten pods setup, each with HTC Vive headsets, 360-degree sound and roomscale tracking. Each experience will  range between 8 to 15 minutes in length and alongside Justice League VR guests will also be able to try Star Trek: Bridge Crew Rescue at PersephRaw Data, Eagle Flight, Archangel and many more.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of IMAX VR, reporting back with the latest updates.

Aegis den weitestgehend unbekannten Sektor The Trench.

Justice League VR: Join the League – Gillette Edition zeigt, was man vom VR-Spiel zukünftig erwarten kann.

Cinera: Hochauflösende Kinobrille soll IMAX-Erlebnis ins Heim bringen
