Live 360-Degree Video Will Be Broadcast Via Satellite At IBC 2017

360-degree video remains the most popular way for users to engage with virtual reality (VR) content. At IBC this year, the Fraunhofer Heinrick Hertz Institute will be broadcasting one of its presentations at the event live over satellite.

Fraunhofer HHI will be setting up Omnicam-360 cameras at popular places throughout Luxembourg to capture live images which will be sent via satellite to a live image feed on a UHD television screen at the SES IBC Booth. This demonstration will showcase not only the impressive image quality, captured at 10K x 2K, but also the ability of the Fraunhofer HHI’s HEVC encoder to compress such large amounts of data for satellite transmission without loss of quality.

Dr. Ralf Schäfer, Head of Division Video at Fraunhofer HHI, explains: “We intend for this demonstration to show that 360-degree video can be consumed by TV viewers even without VR glasses. We also want our camera and HEVC encoding technologies to show that 360-degree video can be broadcast to the consumer in high quality.”

“For a reliable live broadcast of video content to millions of households, using the highest level of resolution, a geostationary satellite system is virtually unbeatable,” says Thomas Wrede, Vice President of New Technology and Standards at SES Video. “We are pleased to work with Fraunhofer HHI, to try out new Direct-to-Home (DTH) applications such as 360-degree video.”

IBC 2017 will take place from 14th-19th September, 2017 at the RAI in Amsterdam. Further information can be found on the official website.

Nokia Showcase New OZO Features At IBC 2017

Finnish tech company Nokia have been making inroads to virtual reality (VR) and 360-degree video with its professional-grade Nokia OZO camera and associated software. The company will be demonstrating new new features of OZO at the IBC in Amsterdam later this month.

Nokia announced in June that OZO Live and OZO Creator would both now come with native support for Windows, allowing OZO to be a multi-platform tool for VR content creators. Broadcasters can also take advantage of a free version of OZOLive without watermarks to test some of the features available on the platform.

New features coming to OZO Live include:

  • Spatial Audio Mixing – users will be able to position audio sources within 3D space to offer more immersive soundscapes. Audio over IP is supported for the Dante and ALSA soundcards.
  • 4K-per-eye Stereo over SDI – Instead of 4K being spilt over both eyes, each eye gets its own full-resolution 4K image.
  • Multi-mode Monitoring – Node discovery allows all OZOLive devices on the same network to be identified and switched to from a single page, allowing users to utilise OZO devices like a traditional multi-camera setup.

Representatives from Nokia will be participating in sevral VR and 360-degree video topics at IBC 2017, such as Best Practices for Live 360 Broadcasting and Developing the Cinematic VR experience.

Attendees at IBC 2017 can find out more by visiting the Nokia booth in Hall 10, stand D26. Further information on IBC 2017 is available at the official website.

Sky, Ericsson and Tiledmedia Showcase VR For Live Sports

At this years’ IBC Conference and Exhibition, three members of the Virtual Reality Industry Forum, Sky, Ericsson and Tiledmedia will be demonstrating how virtual reality (VR) can be paired with live sports for a more engaging viewer experience.

Using 360 video displaying on untethered VR head mounted displays (HMDs), users will be able to experience what it is like to be a Formula 3 driver making a crucial overtake, or in the dugout when their favourite team scores a goal.

The demonstration will use streaming technology provided by Ericsson’s HEVC software encoding along with Tiledmedia’s ClearVR streaming technology for better video quality. Content will be provided by Sky, such as footage from Premier League Football and additional Formula 3 footage provided by Ericsson.

The demonstration will use custom untethered VR headsets along with tablets that will be synced to a TV screen for real-time viewing.

The demonstration will be available at the Ericsson booth in Hall 1, D61. The IBC show will take place on 14th-19th September, 2017 at the RAI in Amsterdam. Featured speakers include Saul Berman of IBM, Stephen Beres of HBO, Orly Amsalem, a Data Scientist at Cisco, Chris Buchanan of Samsung and Caroline Chan of Intel.

Adobe to Showcase VR Advancements for Creative Cloud at IBC 2016

The annual IBC conference takes place this week and Adobe has announced it’ll be showcasing its latest advancements for its Creative Cloud and Marketing Cloud. Alongside improvements for 3D, motion graphics and character animation Adobe will be expanding its virtual reality (VR) feature list.

Adobe will be unveiling additional information for its next release of Premiere Pro CC, this includes auto-aware VR that detects and applies the correct setting to stereoscopic and monoscopic media. While Adobe Primetime will allow media companies to unlock the potential of VR by building sustainable businesses and delivering premium viewing experiences through video playback support, dynamic ad insertion and content protection via Adobe’s Virtual Reality Digital Rights Management (VRDRM).

“Adobe is helping video creators of all kinds – from broadcasters and big movie studios to YouTubers and brands – create their best work,” said Bill Roberts, senior director of product management at Adobe. “As these stories take shape, ideas need to seamlessly move between tools, technologies and teams. Adobe’s multiscreen solution helps media companies connect with their audiences in a personalized way by delivering compelling experiences and adopting immersive capabilities such as 3D, VR and AR.”

The company has also been working with Goldsmiths, University of London regarding VR user interaction and technology. Adobe held a conference in July in which Dr Chris Brauer, Director of Innovation at Goldsmiths University London said: “Augmented reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, wearable technology – in many ways these technologies offer a pathway to these more meaningful experiences, and this was really interesting for us to encounter.”

The IBC 2016 conference is due to feature other VR and 360-degree tech, with SES S.A. and Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) demonstrating the transmitting of immersive content via satellite.

As further VR news from IBC 2016 is announced, VRFocus will report back accordingly.
