HTC Bundles Vive Wireless Adapter With Cosmos Elite In UK Ahead Of Vive Flow Reveal

A pretty attractive new HTC deal bundles the Vive Wireless Adapter in the Cosmos Elite headset in the UK just ahead of the company’s Vive Flow announcement.

The deal, live from today on the Vive website until October 14, applies to the full Cosmos Elite package only, and not the headset-only option. We also don’t see the deal listed in the US yet but will update this article if that happens. The overall package gets you the headset, two Vive wands and 2 SteamVR base stations as well as the Wireless Adapter for £899. Usually the adapter is a hefty £359 itself, so you’re saving quite a lot there even if the headset itself is pretty expensive.

The Elite version of the Cosmos swaps out the base version’s inside-out tracking for the more reliable Lighthouse system from Valve. It’s essentially an upgraded version of the original Vive, though it’s also a step behind the recently-released (and even more expensive) Vive Pro 2 on the specs front.

Still, if you’ve been looking for a wireless PC VR setup and don’t want Facebook’s Oculus Quest — which has a built-in PC VR streaming option — then this could be a good choice. We reviewed the setup back in 2018 with a Vive Pro, which we thought offered a great but expensive experience. The Elite version of the Cosmos, meanwhile, was a solid upgrade, if not enough to make a real dent in the PC market.

It’s possible HTC is trying to sell off adapters and Cosmos units before its announcement later this month. The company’s teased an event for October 14 — the same day this deal ends — and we uncovered trademark filings for something called Vive Flow. Could Flow perhaps represent a new wireless solution? Or does HTC have other plans?

Play Through the Beautiful Quixote Valley in Walkabout Mini Golf Today

Walkabout Mini Golf

Walkabout Mini Golf has become one of the highest-rated titles on the Oculus Quest store and the videogames’ recent release on Steam is doing just as well. Today, developer Might Coconut has announced the launch of Walkabout Mini Golf’s eighth course, a mixture of rocky terrain and lush green pastures, Quixote Valley.

Walkabout Mini Golf

The landscape and towering windmills also give a hint at what to expect from the course, some blustery conditions where the wind will alter the ball’s trajectory in some areas. That new wind mechanic should greatly increase the complexity of the course and give veteran players a proper challenge. Just like all the other courses, Quixote Valley will feature a full 18-holes to complete as well as a new custom club and, of course, many lost balls to try and find.

Quixote Valley joins the likes of Bogey’s Bonanza, the previous course addition which was released in June. This has a Frontier aesthetic with skulls on the course and dramatic sunset lighting.

If you’ve not played Walkabout Mini Golf just yet it’s currently available for Oculus Quest and Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. With solo and multiplayer modes, you’re able to create a quick online match or create a private room for you and four mates for a bit of friendly competition. After you’ve putted your way through all the standard courses you can ramp up the difficulty by activating Night Mode.

Walkabout Mini Golf

When you’re not playing golf you can always hunt down those hidden lost balls or literally fly around the courses, great for admiring the view or for learning their hidden secrets.

Blaston’s New Seasonal Update Adds Some Wild West Flair, Plus a Free Weekend on Steam

Blaston

It has been a whole year since Resolution Games released duelling shooter Blaston, pitting players against one another in slow-mo shootouts. To celebrate the anniversary, the studio has released a new update, is giving away some in-game coinage and even opening up the videogame for a free weekend of mayhem over on Steam.

Blaston

First up is the new “Quick Draw” seasonal game mode that launches today and runs through until later this year. With a Wild West theme, the free update takes players out of the ranked arena and into the dusty terrain of Greatstone Valley for an old-fashioned showdown. As you might expect, this mode is all about being quick on the trigger as you’re only equipped with the new Deadringer gun.

As part of the update, you’ll also have the chance to participate in in-game event challenges that take place on weekends starting 8th October.

And there’s more! Resolution Games is giving away a “Fistful of Blasts”, a one-time free $5 USD worth of blasts to spend on cosmetics like avatar and weapon skins. All you need to do is log in between, 30th September at 10 am PST to 6th October at 10 am PST. That time frame also offers new players the chance to purchase Blaston for 30% off the regular $9.99 price as part of Steam’s weekend deal.

Blaston

If you are new to Blaston you’ll also want to make use of the free Steam weekend where you can play Blaston until 4th October without paying a penny.

“This update to Blaston is a great testament to how far the game has evolved since it launched,” explained Tommy Palm, CEO and co-founder of Resolution Games. “The initial idea for Blaston was a western-style shootout, so being able to include a nod to that in the game while also appealing to a new and broader audience is really fun.”

VRFocus said in its review: “Blaston is another one of the great examples that can only be made in VR and a perfect fit for Oculus Quest. The fast and furious gameplay is instantaneous, grab a gun and shoot it, with the real enjoyment coming from dodging all over the place.”

HTC is Holding a Vive Product Event Just Ahead of Facebook Connect

HTC is gearing up to hold what seems to be a new product unveiling on October 14th, or just ahead of Facebook Connect on the 28th of that month. The company says we’ll be hearing about some “big news in a small package.”

HTC announced the event on Twitter, saying it will take place on October 14th at 11 AM ET (local time here) in the company’s online event space, which is hosted by social VR platform Engage.

There’s still little indication what it might be, although we have some ideas. In February 2020, the company showed off a concept XR headset called Vive Proton, which was touted as a small form-factor device in the making, albeit in its early stages.

Presented in two flavors—a standalone model and a tethered model—it was suggested at the time that Vive Proton achieved its small form-factor via ‘pancake’-style optics, or the type we saw in the compact Pico VR Glasses prototype at CES 2020 right before in-person events were cancelled. Maybe a more refined version of the goggles fits into that thermos-looking thing as a protective charging case?

The company’s RSVP form for the event and tweet above also features a graphic with what appears to be the outside faceplate of Proton, although that may just be wishful thinking.

The graphic’s headline ‘Go with the Flow’ may hold a more concrete clue, as a new HTC trademark for a product called ‘VIVE FLOW’ was filed on August 26th, 2021, which refers to a “[h]ead mounted display for computer simulated reality, namely virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality.”

In any case, it’s a pretty safe bet that whatever HTC unveils it will be squarely targeted at prosumers and businesses, although we’re always happy to be wrong. There’s really only one way to find out though, and that’s to tune in on October 14th and see what HTC has in store.

First Teasing Trailer for The Living Remain Emerges

The Living Remain

For those that just love shooting zombies in the face, there’s going to be another title you may want to add to that undead library of yours, The Living Remain. The work of indie team Five Finger Studios, The Living Remain is going to be a classic survival adventure filled with guns, gore and plenty of corpses by the looks of things.

The Living Remain

In The Living Remain “You are playing as Grant Montgomery, a former military soldier who has been separated from his family,” explains the synopsis. “Now he is searching for them in a post-apocalyptic world where pockets of remaining humans are surviving within protected compounds, while the undead roam freely.” You won’t be completely running around solo, as you find an ally in a group of survivors called Alex. She’ll help you navigate this new hostile world by staying in communication with you over the radio.

Everything else you have to do on your own as this is a single-player adventure. All the core ingredients are there, plenty of weapons from one-handed pistols to two-handed assault rifles and shotguns. Or you can go for the more personal approach with some tactical knife placement. All are designed to function and look as realistic as possible.

When it comes to realism in The Living Remain you’ll find that environments are fully interactive, so you can smash your way through glass barehanded or climb objects and buildings for an advantage when the horde comes stumbling in. There will also be puzzles to solve and crafting mechanics so you can scavenge items to craft ammo and upgrade your arsenal.

The Living Remain

“Our vision with The Living Remain was to create a VR game that incorporated ideas from some of our favourite genres of movies and videogames while creating an experience that we would want,” said Stephen and Pamela Marshall, co-founders of Five Finger Studios in a statement. “This meant taking on a project that felt much bigger than us, but that only motivated us to keep going. It meant so much to be able to create something from the ground up, and offer players a fun and immersive experience.”

Five Finger Studios has yet to confirm when The Living Remain will be released, just that it’ll support Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Valve Index headsets. Take a look at the first trailer below and for further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

VR MMORPG Zenith: The Last City Completes $10m Funding Round

Zenith

Indie virtual reality (VR) studio Ramen VR began work on its MMORPG Zenith: The Last City back in 2019, launching a successful Kickstarter that same year to help fund the project. Resources shouldn’t be much of an issue now because the studio has announced the successful completion of a $10 million Series A investment round.

Zenith

The round was led by Makers Fund, Anthos Capital and Dune Ventures, with Ramen VR founders Andy Tsen and Lauren Frazier using the funds to expand the development team. This is in addition to the funding partnership they have in place with Oculus.

“With Ramen VR, our goal is to create a digital reality that is as significant and memorable as the physical one, expanding on what makes a captivating and immersive social game. Zenith is the first step in that direction,” said Andy Tsen, CEO and co-founder, Ramen VR in a statement. “Lauren and I set out to design a world that married the positive social features of MMOs with the power of VR, and with the rising popularity of VR hardware and growing interest in the metaverse, we’re seeing so many ways for our players to make meaningful connections in Zenith. We’ve already had incredibly positive feedback from our community about the social interactions in our game and the promise of the future. Our partners at Makers Fund, Anthos, and Dune have been so supportive of our vision, and we are thrilled to have them aboard our journey.”

Zenith: The Last City has gained a lot of interest from the VR community over the past couple of years thanks to the pure scope of the project. A fully cross-platform VR MMO that will support all major platforms including Oculus Quest, PlayStation VR, and PC VR devices, the videogame offers an open world for players to explore with gameplay focused on multiplayer collaboration.

Zenith

To date, Ramen VR has completed two closed alphas that saw thousands of players participate, with the studio claiming that most users spent: “an average of two hours per day with some players spending as much as 40 hours a week.” Inspired by anime, JRPG classics, World of Warcraft, and Ultima Online, Zenith: The Last City could offer some of the most expansive gaming seen in VR, a massively rich fantasy universe where players craft their own path by selecting various character classes depending on whether they prefer wielding magic or diving into melee combat.

While the last Alpha was completed in early August the studio has yet to confirm when the beta testing is likely to start. With the new investment to bring more people on board, there might not be too long to wait.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Zenith: The Last City, reporting back with further updates.

HTC Vive Is Teasing ‘Big News In A Small Package’ Next Month

HTC Vive is back at it with the announcement teases. The company is now hinting at a reveal next month in predictably cryptic ways.

The announcement takes place inside the Engage platform at 8am PT on October 14 and anyone can attend on VR platforms or flatscreen devices. HTC accompanied the news with an image (below) of… well we can’t quite tell what. It looks like a flask or Bluetooth speaker. Some have speculated it could be a case for some kind of foldable headset. There’s a little more to the story, though.

New HTC Vive Teases

The sign-up page includes the message ‘Go with the Flow’. We’d take bets that the reveal is for something called ‘Vive Flow’, then. Vive China President Alvin Wang Graylin also teased the event will have “big news in a small package“.

HTC Vive Go-with-the-Flow

Now, fair warning, this next one is a big bit of speculation on our part. Taking a look at the event key art, there are two shapes at the bottom that do look just a little like lenses, or perhaps even the front of the Project Proton concepts HTC revealed at the beginning of last year.

HTC Proton

Proton was designed to be a lightweight headset powered either by a phone or onboard compute. Could that fit the message of something big in a small package? Or perhaps the company has something on the AR side to show?

But that’s just speculation. Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves just yet. HTC has already launched two VR headsets this year – the upgraded Vive Pro 2 for PC and the enterprise-focused Vive Focus 3 standalone headset. Though Pro 2 can be picked up by anyone, it’s still an expensive high-end device. Whatever the company announces next month — two weeks before the Facebook Connect conference — it’s likely to follow that high-end trend.

We’ll of course bring you the latest on the Vive announcement as soon as we can.

Ultrawings 2 Prepares for Takeoff in 2022

Ultrawings 2

Bit Planet Games has been teasing details of its aerial title Ultrawings 2 for a little while now. A few days ago the studio ended all of that hinting with an official announcement, Ultrawings 2 will be coming to Oculus Quest and PC VR headsets in early 2022.

Ultrawings 2

The original Ultrawings was a particular favourite amongst early VR fans with its mixture of simulator and arcade flying mechanics. After nearly four years in development, Ultrawings 2 is taking that gameplay up a notch with Bit Planet Games saying it’ll be “3X the gameplay of the original” with a bunch of new mission types as you progress through the open-world adventure.

Providing realistic physics and mechanics for each of the five aircraft – which includes a helicopter – you’ll be able to use your virtual hands to grab the cockpit controls or use HOTAS and gamepad controllers if they’re more to your liking. As mentioned, Ultrawings 2 is a mixture of sim and arcade flying with the studio noting: “Although the aircraft’s flight model is based off of its RL counterpart, liberties have been taken to make them uniquely fun to fly.”

Ultrawings 2 will be all about giving pilots stuff to do with hundreds of missions that should keep you in the air for 40-60 claims Bit Planet Games. These will include popping balloons with a dart pistol, stunt plane aerobatics, air-to-air combat shooting down drones in the fighter plane, and trying to land the rocket-powered glider. All of this will take place across day, night, dusk, and rainy conditions to alter the challenges.

Ultrawings 2

Combat Missions will be introduced in Ultrawings 2 in which you’ll encounter dogfighting scenarios, having to intercept bombers and sinking enemy shipping convoys using a one-handed grenade pistol.

Even with the release still months away the studio has already said it has big plans post-launch: “Ultrawings 2 is designed and built for expansion. Expect new aircraft, new gameplay (air races anyone?) and new islands.”

Bit Planet Games is currently aiming to release Ultrawings 2 for Oculus Quest, Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets in February 2022, with other platforms to be revealed at a later date. Take a look at the new trailer below, and for further updates keep reading VRFocus.

Get Your Rally on This Month in Rec Room

Rec Rally

Social app Rec Room is holding its annual Rec Con event this weekend, three days of panels, concerts, special events and announcements. As part of today’s roster, Rec Room has just unveiled a brand new game that is playable on supported devices later this week, Rec Rally.

Rec Rally

Part of a new feature where Rec Room adds driveable cars to the social world, Rec Rally has been built in-house by the Rec Room team. Introducing a brand new off-road environment, up to six players can race around the track and compete for first place, utilising boosts, jumps and powerslides to their advantage.

As mentioned, this feature allows all player to participate, whether they’re on iOS or Android devices, in full virtual reality (VR) on an Oculus Quest 2, PC VR headset or PlayStation VR, or on a TV screen playing on the latest PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Really though, Rec Rally is more of a showcase for the vehicle feature. This is the first time players can have a fully realized vehicle experience in Rec Room, with all the creator options users know and love. With the Rally buggies, they’ll be able to create their own driving experiences for their rooms inviting friends to come and test a new track.

Rec Rally

The buggies support multiple passengers and dual-wielding objects while driving, so whether you’re in the buggy by yourself or with a passenger, combat racing is all part of the fun. The buggies can be found in the ‘Beta Features’ section of the maker pen.

This continues a recent bevvy of updates for the social app, seeing Android support introduced in August and Rec Room host its own Reclympics. All aided by recent investment rounds that have brought Rec Room’s total funding to date to $149 million USD.

Rec Room’s Rec Rally update will be released this Wednesday, 29th September at 10 am PT (6 pm BST) for free. See the new feature in action below and for further updates on the latest Rec Room news, keep reading VRFocus.

Competition: Win Wolf Attack on Steam

Wolf Attack

Earlier this month indie team TomatoVR released its fifth virtual reality (VR), Wolf Attack, a wave shooter inspired by the Three Little Pigs nursery rhyme. Supporting PC VR headsets, this weekend VRFocus has got a bunch of Wolf Attack codes for our readers to win.

Wolf Attack

In Wolf Attack you play one of those three little pigs, trying to protect your home from those damn beasts. Featuring solo and multiplayer modes, in single-player it’s just you trying to protect the village using either shotguns or a bow and arrow. There are four waves to complete and you can heal yourself if needed, pretty simple stuff.

The multiplayer component is going to provide greater longevity by offering online PvP. You’re not directly fighting each other, instead, after choosing from one of six characters you’re both placed in fixed positions on the battlefield. Kill the most enemies to come out victorious.

Wolf Attack

So onto the competition. VRFocus has Steam codes for Wolf Attack to giveaway. There are multiple ways to enter the giveaway with the standard prize draw entry rules applying: Follow us (or already be following us) on Twitter (@VRFocus) or alternatively, visit our Facebook page or YouTube channel to get an entry for each. The competition will be open until 11.59 pm BST on Thursday, 27th September 2021. The draw will be made shortly thereafter. Best of luck.
