GT Sport Discounted to £10.85/$13.99

Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo is one of the most popular racing videogame franchises of all time, and the PlayStation 4 edition of the series, GT Sport, proved to be no different. Now however, 19 months after its debut, the videogame is available to purchase for some fantastically reduced prices, including one retailer offering more than a 75 percent discount on the suggested retail price (SRP).

Often considered the definitive motor racing experience, Gran Turismo is back on PlayStation 4, offering players instant access to the fastest, most desirable driving machines on the planet. More than 174 of the best cars in the world are available in GT Sport, from Vision Gran Turismo concept vehicles and exclusive prototypes to the best in real world motoring. All cars have been built from the ground up to deliver the most realistic handling cars ever available in a Gran Turismo videogame, and every vehicle has been digitally recreated in exhaustive detail, from the internal structure of the headlights to the stitching of the seats.

Building on the popularity of the numerous racetracks featured in previous Gran Turismo titles, including the Nürburgring Nordschleife (North Loop), a number of tracks featured in GT Sport appear in the series for the first time. These include the “Tokyo Expressway” and the half-mile oval dubbed the “Northern Isle Speedway.” A total of 17 locations with over 40 courses feature in GT Sport, taking drivers everywhere from the Japanese metropolis to the Mexican-American border.

Of course, the most important aspect of GT Sport for readers of VRFocus is the PlayStation VR compatibility, originally revealed way back in 2015. The VR Tour Mode pits players head-to-head in online races, and the post-launch addition of VR Time Trials offers an enjoyable – if less than comprehensive – VR bonus to the core GT Sport videogame.

GT Sport is currently available in physical retail packaging for £10.85 GBP / $13.99 USD via Play Asia, while Amazon is also offering the title at a discounted price of £19.37. For comparison sake, UK retailer GAME is currently listing the title at £44.99.

The PlayStation VR software catalogue is rapidly increasing with both indie releases and AAA blockbusters such as GT Sport, with some new titles expected to be announced at next month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Los Angeles. VRFocus will of course keep you updated with all the latest details.

‘Gran Turismo Sport’ Update Brings Time Trials to ‘PSVR Mode’

Gran Turismo Sport (2017), the VR-compatible PS4 racing sim, just got an update that lets PSVR owners take a crack at two race circuits in time trial mode.

GT Sport isn’t exactly a fully fledged PSVR title as such, since you can’t play the full game in VR. You’re instead relegated to a much less extensive “VR Arcade” mode that features all racetracks but only a single AI opponent with a non-adjustable (and frankly laughable) difficulty.

Small recompense: you’ll now be able speed around both Nurburgring and Suzuka race circuits in time trial mode, which at very least adds a touch more replayablity to the title which has basically languished for PSVR owners since launch – outside the odd update that added more cars and tracks to the list, that is.

And no, the game still doesn’t feature multiplayer, and it’s possible it never will, according to a GameWatch interview (Japanese) with game designer Kazunori Yamauchi.

“Although I do not have plans for multiplayer at the moment, I am planning to make time trials possible in VR mode with future updates,” said Yamauchi.

Guild of Music Supervisors Nominate GT Sport for Award

The Guild of Music Supervisors have announced their list of nominees for their eighth annual GMS awards. The awards show will present 14 awards to nominees from the motion picture, television, trailers, promos, advertising and videogame industries; and Gran Turismo Sport, the PlayStation VR favourite, is up for an award of its own.

There’s a bunch of videogames nominated at the Guild of Music Supervisors Awards this year, which takes place at The Theatre, Ace Hotel, Los Angeles on February 8th. Other videogames nominated include Call of Duty: WWII, Life is Strange: Before The Storm, Madden NFL 18, and FIFA 18.

GT Sport now often gets bundles with PlayStation VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) since the title makes such great use of virtual reality (VR). Following a price drop on the PlayStation VR HMDs, the game and the HMD units sold quite well near the end of last year.

“From music-intensive tent-pole sequels like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ and ‘Pitch Perfect 3,’ to technically complicated musicals and animated films like ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘Coco,’ to elegantly-navigated character dramas like ‘Ladybird,’ ‘The Florida Project’ and ‘Call Me By Your Name,’ the film committee has highlighted the best music supervision in film this past year,” said Thomas Golubić, President of the Guild of Music Supervisors. “We are incredibly proud of the stellar work of our fellow music supervisors in this extraordinarily rich year in music in media. Our February 8th awards will be a festive celebration of their laudable work.”

This is the third year in a row that the Guild of Music Supervisors Awards have been held at The Theatre, Los Angeles. Anyone attending the awards will be treated to more than just the show, as there will also be live music performed by GMS Spotlight Artist Yungblud, a recording artist from North England.

The Guild of Music Supervisors also look at music in emerging media, so we can only hope that VR content will be considered more often in the future as it becomes a bigger media force.

We’ll let you know if Gran Turismo Spot win an award at the GMS Awards this year, so for all of the latest information, make sure to keep your eyes on VRFocus.

E3 2017 ‘Day 3’ Roundup: We Play ‘Moss’ & ‘The Impatient’, Archangel & Sparc Dated, Kopin 2k VR Headset Hands On

Here’s our roundup of news from E3 day 3. We go hands on with newly announced PSVR titles Moss and The Impatient. Archangel and Sparc for PSVR get a release dates, more details of Gran Turismo Sport‘s VR support are revealed and we go hands on with Kopin’s 2k per eye, super lightweight microdisplay VR headset.

No Heroes Allowed! VR gets Western release:

While it missed the main ‘PlayStation VR Game’ segment of Sony’s keynote, another PSVR title was announced at E3 this week – the quirky Japanese real-time strategy game with the unusual title V! What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord? R will see a Western release, named No Heroes Allowed! VR. The game is due to launch this Fall, although there is no firm date at this time.

Mech Shooter Archangel coming first to PSVR:

Skydance Interactive’s first original VR title Archangel, which is being developed for all major VR platforms, will launch first on PSVR. The high-intensity mech shooter arrives in July, with an exclusive two-week window on PlayStation VR before coming to Vive and Rift.

Hands-on with PSVR game Moss:

One of the 5 brand new VR games shown during Sony’s E3 keynote, Moss was perhaps the most striking. We’ve now had some hands-on time with Polyarc Games’ adorable platformer. The 15 minute demo covered 5 puzzle-laden areas and some combat, and our first impressions are very positive.

Sparc receives timed exclusivity on PSVR:

The VR sports game from CCP Games, famous for developing Eve Online, and VR spinoffs Eve: Valkyrie and Gunjack was expected to launch on Vive, Rift and PSVR this year. However, Sparc is now confirmed to be launching exclusively on PSVR ‘first’ in Q3 2017.

Hands-on with PSVR game The Inpatient:

We tried a short demo of newly-announced VR title The Inpatient, one of two new PSVR games from Supermassive Games. The psychological horror game is set in the Blackwood Sanatorium featured in Until Dawn (2015), with the demo showcasing some ‘intensely human-like character animations and excellent voice acting’.

Gran Turismo Sport shown on PSVR with significant limitations:

Sony’s flagship racing simulator was given a shiny new trailer for E3 this week, along with a newly-adjusted release window of Fall 2017. While not the first time Polyphony Digital’s upcoming racing sim has been shown running on PSVR, the game’s VR mode has been confirmed to be limited to 1v1 offline racing.

Kopin shows high resolution, lightweight VR headset prototypes:

And in non-PSVR news… microdisplay and optics manufacturer Kopin is at E3 touting a new prototype headset featuring ‘Lightning’, a 1-inch display with 2,048 x 2,048 per-eye resolution and running at 120Hz. A great benefit of using microdisplays is the resultant headset form factor, which is far more compact and lighter than any current consumer design. It remains to be seen whether this size of display can combine effectively with lenses to achieve a large, immersive FOV for VR.

Driving Willow Springs International Raceway In ‘GT Sport’ For PlayStation VR

Driving Willow Springs International Raceway In ‘GT Sport’ For PlayStation VR

At the PlayStation Experience conference in Anaheim Sony showed GT Sport running on PlayStation VR with a full racing simulator setup.

I took several laps around Willow Springs International Raceway, which pretty much blew my mind in the best possible way because the track is actually only 30 minutes from my house. I’ve driven by the raceway for 15 years, wondering what it’s like to actually drive on that track.

Now I know.

Sony tells me developers spent around a week at Willow Springs capturing the track’s every detail. I believe it. I get an incredible sense of presence looking at the rocky hillsides and green signs that look exactly like what I’ve seen studying the track from afar.

Developers spent a week at Willow Springs International Raceway capturing information about the track. Photo courtesy Sony.

It appears to be just after dawn as the sun is creeping up over the Mojave desert. The windows inside the car are surprisingly small, forcing me to move my head around inside the cabin so I can catch features outside in the morning light, to literally keep myself on track. I can see every little detail as the yellow light casts on my steering wheel and dashboard. I press the pedal to the floor and accelerate toward the hillside. As I grip the wheel tightly and turn a corner, the dashboard goes completely black and I’m unable to see anything inside through the shadows.

The racing simulator features a subwoofer below my seat that is unfortunately not active for my demo, but I feel a lot of haptic feedback through the steering wheel as I tear around corners. The PlayStation 4 is stored where the hood of the car would be in the simulator, and the PlayStation Camera is mounted at the front of the unit for position tracking the headset. At one point I lose control of the vehicle and flip the car before finding myself righted again automatically, and ready to make my way back onto the course. I feel no discomfort during the crash.

My race is just a time trial by myself, reinforcing just how unfortunate it is that only a portion of GT Sport will be offered in VR. I wish we could get the whole game in VR and race against others, but it is unknown if we’ll be able to do that. Then again, I’ve dropped plenty of time into trying to cut seconds off my lap and get a license in Gran Turismo over the years. I could see myself sinking plenty of time into a course like Willow Springs all by myself. Driving around a course I know from the real world in a full racing simulator was easily one of the coolest and most satisfying things I’ve done in VR so far, and I can’t wait to return and memorize every inch of that track when it arrives in 2017.
