Design Tool Gravity Sketch Moves to Free Model Today

Gravity Sketch

Virtual reality (VR) design tool Gravity Sketch has been promoting the principle that model design is far easier starting in 3D, rather than beginning 2D, for several years now. Today, the London, UK-based company has taken another step towards aiding creative workflows by making Gravity Sketch free.

Gravity Sketch

Whether you’re on an Oculus Quest, a Valve Index or any other supported headset Gravity Sketch has now waived its usual £22.99 price so you can start designing straight away. This also means that the tool is leaving Early Access after releasing its fifth major only a few days ago.

Why is Gravity Sketch now free? “Over the past few years the tool has been adopted by a healthy number of users who have helped influence the direction of the development as well as our business model. To truly achieve our mission of accessible digital 3D creation, making the core product free is the best way forward,” said Oluwaseyi Sosanya, co-founder and CEO, Gravity Sketch, in a blog post. “Providing a free product allows us to welcome a more diverse user group.”

Going forward there will be two editions of Gravity Sketch, the ‘Core’ version which is free and contains all the normal creative tools users know and love, as well as IGES and FBX export options (FBX is for PC VR only) which were only previously available to business users. And then there’s the Business version which includes a range of tailored features, onboarding, training, support services, and access to Co-Creation features for real-time collaboration.

Gravity Sketch

If you already own Gravity Sketch then don’t worry about spending cash as you’ve not only helped support development but you get a couple of thank you goodies. You’ll now have 5GB storage on LandingPad (compared to 1GB for free users) as well as ‘Early Adopter’ status on your LandingPad account with priority access to future features and services.

As for the future of Gravity Sketch, the team is still working on its iPad app alongside more mannequin features, camera controls, and more creative reference materials. All this will be, in part, thanks to the company successfully completing a £2.9 million GBP investment round back in September 2020.

Choose Your World’s Hues In Color Space On Quest And Rift

The world might seem to be changing in ways you and your family are struggling to understand. In Color Space, though, the environment is serene and colorless, inviting you to take control one decision at a time.

First, which color do you want? Now, where to put it?

Color Space is available now on Oculus Quest and Rift for $10 and adapts the timeless appeal of coloring books to the complete sensory control of VR. Just pick a color and a place to put it. From Lighthaus Inc, the project is produced by David Sarno and engineered by Anna Krasner with pioneering VR artist Danny Bittman working as creative director and composer. Bittman’s been experimenting with a range of VR tools over the years to develop workflows that are efficient, perform well in headsets, and remain visually pleasing. You can visit some of those works in places like the Museum Of Other Realities, but in Color Space you get the chance to partner with the artist to colorize 10 alluring scenes from the available palettes.

According to Bittman, the design process for the 10 worlds included at launch started in Gravity Sketch and Tilt Brush, with refinement of the meshes completed in Gravity Sketch. The skyboxes are made in Tilt Brush and baked into 360 images. AnimVR was also used “extensively” in prototyping for the project, according to Bittman. The creators are planning to talk soon about how they made the software.

You can find Color Space now on Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift. Check out the trailer below.

Will you or your family be escaping to this world of colors anytime soon? Let us know in the comments below.

Gravity Sketch Comes To Oculus Quest With Rift Cross-Buy

Art creation software Gravity Sketch is now available on Oculus Quest.

The software supports cross-buy with Oculus Rift so if you buy Gravity Sketch for one headset you can use it with the other. Gravity Sketch sells for around $30 and joins Google’s Tilt Brush as one of the few asset creation applications available on the standalone VR system.

The description for Gravity Sketch on the Oculus Store says it includes a number of creation tools as well as the ability to import images and export objects as .OBJ files. Skilled artists like Danny Bittman are already praising the software’s arrival on Quest.

I recently visited a simulated art gallery in the Museum Of Other Realities using a PC VR headset and found a corner room produced by Bittman with Gravity Sketch. The central piece in the room allowed visitors to teleport, shrink down and walk around inside the artwork. More colorful pieces were arranged around the perimeter of the room. You could either walk up and explore these miniatures as a full size person or shrink yourself down and see the works in the distance through a colorful forest at the center of Bittman’s room. The entire room used so few triangles it might run on an Oculus Quest.

While not quite an end-to-end production relying only on VR specific tools, the use of Gravity Sketch artwork in a multiplayer space like the MOR hints at the kind of future Facebook is working toward with the headset. It is only a matter of time before an artist produces and shows their work entirely on all-in-one VR computers. With Gravity Sketch on Quest, creators are one step closer to making this possible.

New Video Showcases Gravity Sketch 1.5 Features

Earlier this week Gravity Sketch announced their latest update which brought with it a ton of new features and saw the software move up to version 1.5. Now, to help showcase the new feature and encourage more artists to use the software the team have released a video that gives a detailed look at how each of the new features works within the update all while showcasing the power of Gravity Sketch.

Gravity Sketch

Some of the new features that were added in update 1.5 including a new Taper mode, given users the ability to draw any length of stroke and always have tapered ends. The option to Draw with Normals which sees non-rounded brush strokes better match the rotation of the controller along with the freedom to now Edit Normals of strokes as well. Additionally a number of new Export Options and a depth-of-field effect were added in the update as well. These are all shown in the video below but there are also plenty of others which further improve the user experience and workflow as well.

Some of these features, which are shown in the below video, including the option to group and un-group objects, a new Bridge Curves mode for closing gaps between strokes, a volume tool, Superellipsoid, sketch material access and an orthographic viewport as well for Pro or Studio owners. On top of that improvements were made to the screenshot camera, reference images, keyboard functionality, redesigned icons and buttons for better readability, performance improvements across the whole product and plenty of bug fixes to keep users happy.

Gravity Sketch is committed to disrupting and reimagining current design workflows to enable creatives to fully express their ideas in real-time”, said Gravity Sketch CEO, Seyi Sosanya. “Putting the users at the centre of our development has allowed us to continue creating a software that is not only applicable to those from technical and digital backgrounds, but is also created in a way that it can touch creatives in all walks of life regardless of their creative prowess, and also bringing back an element of fun into the creative process. Our latest developments really encapsulate our communities’ feedback and we can’t wait to see what they can create with it.”

Gravity Sketch is available now on Steam for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. More information on the new update can be found on the store page and in the below video which demonstrates each of the features in action.

‘Gravity Sketch’ 1.5 Update Brings New Tools for 3D Design Concepting

Gravity Sketch fills an interesting role in the world of VR modeling tools. More focused on design than art, the app functions much like a 3D sketchpad for exploring ideas of form and color as part of a broader modeling workflow. An update to the Early Access app brings new and improved tools to make 3D ideation faster and easier.

Update 1.5 for Gravity Sketch, which is now available on the Oculus Store and Steam, brings a handful of new tools and improved functionality, much of which the company says has come as a result of user feedback during the app’s Early Access period. A video from the company summarizes the changes:

The video doesn’t cover everything however; the full features list of new features from the company follows:

  • Taper mode – This setting allows artists to draw any length of stroke and always have tapered ends.
  • Draw with Normals – When artists draw with a non-round brush, the shape of the stroke will do a much better job matching the rotation of the controller.
  • Edit Normals – This feature allows artists to edit the twist of strokes along their path (think square brush).
  • Depth of Field + Square Snapshot – Artists can now add a depth-of-field effect to their snapshots, and take square pictures ready for the gram!
  • Orthographic Views – Accessed from a new menu on the advanced panel, artists can now view their model from top/front/side orthographic viewports, then grab the panels off and take screenshots of them directly!
  • Export Options – Gravity Sketch now has improved export layout and settings for .obj, .fbx and .iges, which give artists more control over the export process and improve compatibility with popular design tools.
  • Sketch Materials – The replacement to color history allows artists to re-use materials much more accurately in their current sketch.
  • Super Ellipsoid – This new primitive allows artists to adjust extra parameters to create interesting shapes.
  • Filled Solid – Artists can now create new filled shapes in non-planar mode.
  • Simple Grouping – Artists can now create groups of objects, which they can then move and manipulate.
  • Connect Curves – Artists can now automatically patch two curves/splines/surfaces together.

Earlier this year, Gravity Sketch announced they’d raised $1.7 million with participation from Wacom—a leading provider of digital design hardware, best known for its high-precision graphics tablets and similar touch & stylus input technology; it’s a big name in the design space, and a strong vote of confidence for Gravity Sketch.
