Sony & nDreams to Bring Ghostbusters to Meta Quest 2

The Ghostbusters franchise has already dipped its toe in virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) gaming thanks to projects like Ghostbusters: Dimensions and Ghostbusters World. To close out the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase yesterday Mark Zuckerberg made a surprise announcement, a Ghostbusters VR videogame is coming to Meta Quest 2.

Ghostbusters VR

A collaborative effort between nDreams, Ghost Corps and Sony Pictures Virtual Reality (SPVR), Ghostbusters VR (working title) will be a four-player cooperative adventure. Rather than taking place in its traditional New York location, the VR experience will be set in San Francisco from where you’ll run a new Ghostbusters HQ.

With the iconic proton pack slung on your back you and your friends – or played solo – will be able to track, shot, and trap all manner of ghoulish spectres. All in the name of protecting the city, you’ll also have to solve a compelling and original mystery during the campaign.

“With SPVR, we’ve found the perfect teammates to help bring a boundary-pushing multiplayer game to virtual reality,” says Tomas Gillo, Chief Development Officer, nDreams in a statement. “In addition, our close collaboration with the creators of the Ghostbusters franchise at Ghost Corps, combined with our extensive experience creating rich, tactile and immersive VR will blow gamers and Ghostbusters fans away.”

Ghostbusters VR

“If you’re looking to create a big, engaging multiplayer VR game that has to be experienced to be believed, who you gonna call? nDreams,” says Jake Zim, Senior Vice President, Virtual Reality, Sony Pictures Entertainment. “Virtual reality on Quest 2 truly allows us to live out our dream of being a Ghostbuster. The world, the ghosts and the iconic tools and equipment deliver the ultimate VR adventure. And most importantly, busting ghosts with your friends is fun!”

Exclusive to Meta Quest 2 by the sound of it, nDreams hasn’t said when Ghostbusters VR might be arriving. The VR studio does have two other projects arriving a lot faster, with Fracked and Little Cities both scheduled for release next month. For continued updates on Ghostbusters VR, keep reading gmw3.

Co-op ‘Ghostbusters VR’ Game Revealed from Sony Pictures Virtual Reality and Developer nDreams

Today at the very end of the Quest Gaming Showcase, Meta announced an upcoming Ghostbusters VR game in development by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality & nDreams, built for four-player co-op.

Can’t say we saw that one coming. At the end of the Quest Gaming Showcase, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg briefly appeared to introduce the world premiere of Ghostbusters VR, an upcoming Quest 2 game built around four player co-op.

Developed by veteran VR studio nDreams and set in San Francisco, CA, Sony Pictures Virtual Reality says players can expect to “solve a deep mystery across a new chapter in the Ghostbusters universe. Track, blast, and trap ghosts in gripping encounters by wielding iconic equipment. Go it alone, or as a team with up to three friends in co-op, in an extensive and engrossing campaign. Continue the Ghostbusters’ legacy, protect the city from fiendish ghosts, and experience all the humor and frights from the beloved franchise.”

nDreams is well known in the VR space as the studio behind titles like Phantom: Covert Ops and Fracked. The studio also just raised a hefty $35 million investment to further expand its VR development and publishing operations.

“With SPVR, we’ve found the perfect teammates to help bring a boundary-pushing multiplayer game to virtual reality,” says Tomas Gillo, Chief Development Officer, nDreams. “In addition, our close collaboration with the creators of the Ghostbusters franchise at Ghost Corps, combined with our extensive experience creating rich, tactile and immersive VR will blow gamers and Ghostbusters fans away.”

Ghostbusters VR is said to be a working title for the time being, and while no specific release date has been announced, Meta said that everything shown at the Quest Gaming Showcase is expected to launch in the next 12 months, presumably including Ghostbusters VR.

Ghostbusters VR Announced With Co-Op, Single-Player Modes

Fracked and Phantom developer nDreams is working on a Ghosbusters VR game for Quest 2.

The first teaser trailer for the project closed out the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase today. The trailer wasn’t in-game but showcased a first-person perspective in which a character hunted for a ghost with friends using iconic gadgets from the series.

Ghostbusters VR Announced

In the game, you’ll be tasked with building a new Ghosbusters headquarters in San Francisco as you play through a campaign with a central mystery. nDreams has since confirmed that the game will also support cooperative play for up to four players alongside single-player options too.

Though the game has only been confirmed for Quest 2 thus far, the Ghostbusters franchise is owned by Sony Pictures and the game is published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality, so there’s a chance we could see it on PSVR or perhaps PSVR 2. nDreams has already confirmed that it’s working on PSVR 2 projects. It’s also publishing Little Cities next month and is bringing Fracked to PC VR in a few weeks, so it’s a busy time for the UK-based studio.

This won’t be the first Ghostbusters experience for VR; location-based entertainment company The Void had an experience set in the same world years ago. This will be the first game for home-based headsets, though.

No word yet on when the game will release but we’ll be keeping a close eye on it. What do you make of the reveal of Ghostbusters VR? Let us know in the comments below!

PlayStation VR Ain’t Afraid Of No Ghosts! And Ghostbusters VR is Now Hiring…

A new Ghostbusters virtual reality (VR) experience is heading onto PlayStation VR (PSVR). It will be called Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring and is expected to be released episodically, with the first part being labelled Act 1: Firehouse.

The new VR experience is heading to PSVR to allow fans to take a look around the famous Firehouse that forms the home of the Ghostbusters. Fans can explore the Ecto-1, take a peek at the basement where the Ghost Containment Unit is, and even introduce themselves to Slimer.

Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring ties in to the original Ghostbusters movie as well as the 2016 Ghostbusters film, directed by Ivan Reitman, who also directed Ghostbusters II. Reitman said of the project: “Everyone who has wanted the experience of being a Ghostbuster, firing a proton blaster, and exploring the Ghostbusters firehouse, can now experience it for themselves in their own living room,”

Joe Burg, who produced the experience for Sony Pictures Virtual Reality said, “This incredible VR experience extends the reach of the beloved Ghostbusters franchise, giving its legions of passionate fans the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of this classic movie.”

This is not the first time the Ghostbusters franchise has been in VR, however. In 2016, Madame Tussauds opened an interactive VR experience called Ghostbusters: Dimensions in partnership with THE VOID where visitors had the opportunity to shoot hosts with proton blasters just like in the movies.

Ghostbusters VR – Now Hiring, Act 1: Firehouse is due to be available from the PlayStation Store from today, 21st March 2017 at a price point of $6.99 (USD). It should be noted it requires the PlayStation Move controllers to play.

VRFocus will bring you further news on Ghostbusters VR as it comes in.

‘Ghostbusters VR’ Experience Comes to PSVR, from Makers of Acclaimed ‘The Walk’ Demo

It seems the Ghostbusters franchise isn’t done capitalizing on the video game market just yet, because the first installment of a new Ghostbusters experience is heading to PlayStationVR today. The experience (read: not game) was developed by CreateVR and Sony’s in-house VR production studio, and is entitled Ghostbusters VR – Now Hiring, Act 1: Firehouse.

In the experience you meet Mooglie, the iconic ghost from the franchise’s logo, who takes you on a tour of the Ghostbusters’ firehouse where you get to meet the mean, green and highly insatiable Slimer. Sony says you also get to paw around the Ecto-1, assemble and fire a proton pack, check out the basement where the Ghost Containment Unit lies, and according to the trailer, get to trap a big ugly ghostie. Of course, all models and scene work were patterned after the 2016 franchise reboot.

Ghostbusters VR – Now Hiring, Act 1: Firehouse will be available for download from the PlayStation Store for $6.99 starting today. PS4 system, PS VR headset, and PS Move controllers are required for use.

Project developers CreateVR are well-known for their work on The Walk demo, a VR version of the Robert Zemeckis’ 2015 film featuring a death-defying saunter across a tightrope strung between the World Trade Center buildings circa 1974. CreateVR have also recently developed a VR experience for Ouija 2: Origin of Evil (2016) for Universal Pictures International.

Sony Pictures Virtual Reality develops narrative VR content including Ghostbusters: Dimension, a mixed-reality experience currently hosted at out-of-home VR park The VOID. Sony’s in-house production studio most recently published Passengers:
Awakening, a VR adventure inside the Starship Avalon, drawing on the Academy Award-nominated production design of the 2016 film.

The VOID Opens Mixed-Reality Location in Dubai

The makers say the new park, located on the high-rent shopping area of The Beach on the Dubai Marina, is however a “limited engagement” with a presumably finite amount of slots available to the public before it closes. The park opens on March 24th, with tickets going on sale the 23rd. No definite closing date has been reported.

The Void combines a real world environment—i.e. a predetermined play space and objects within it—with corresponding virtual imagery shown via the platform’s powerful backpack-mounted PC and modified Oculus Rift headset, making it an entirely untethered, free-roaming VR experience. With additional smells wafting your way and other special effects like wind, heat, cold and vibration, The Void promises to offer a uniquely immersive ‘4D’ mixed-reality experience.

Cliff Plumer, CEO at The Void and former president of cinematic VR company Jaunt’s Santa Monica studio, said: “At THE VOID we are committed to allowing everyone, everywhere to step beyond reality, and into the most immersive entertainment experience imaginable. We are excited to partner with Meraas to bring THE VOID to Dubai, one of the most innovative leisure and entertainment destinations on the planet. The cutting-edge innovation we’ve seen in Dubai is a natural fit for the hyper-reality experience THE VOID will bring residents and visitors.”

The Dubai location was created in partnership with Meraas, a UAE-based holding company and owners of several locations including Dubai’s The Beach.

Road to VR contributor Paul McAdory stepped into The Void’s Ghostbusters: Dimension experience in New York last summer, saying that while it isn’t the most graphically intense VR experience he’s ever seen (and was remarkably short), the uncanny immersion of feeling virtual objects while he tracked and trapped supernatural enemies through a New York apartment complex brought the entire experience together. Check out his detailed hands-on here.

The Ghostbusters: Dimensions experience is said to last between 10-15 minutes including suit-up and suit-down. Dubai pricing and ticketing information hasn’t yet been released yet, but can be found on The Void’s website starting March 23rd.

The company maintains a test facility just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah—still closed to the public and by invite only.
