‘Ghostbusters VR’ Co-op Game Coming to Quest 2 & PSVR 2 Next Month, New Gameplay Trailer Here

During PlayStation’s State of Play event developer nDreams announced that the long-awaited ghostbusting VR game, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, is set to launch October 26th.

Update (September 15th, 2023): nDreams and publisher Sony Virtual Reality announced Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord finally has a street date: October 26th, 2023.

The game is priced at $55. Pre-ordering on Quest or PSVR 2 gets you the ‘FULL CONTAINMENT EDITION’, which features the full game plus six months of upcoming DLC and bonus content, the studio says. The original article follows below:

Original Article (June 1st, 2023): nDreams, also known for Fracked (2021)Phantom: Covert Ops (2020), and upcoming PSVR 2 exclusive Synapse, also released a new trailer featuring a few snippets of gameplay, showing off some of the game’s four-player co-op in action.

In it, we see some a bunch of the franchise’s iconic stuff, such as proton packs, ghost traps, P.K.E. meters, and even the Ecto-1.

If you’re just hearing about Ghostbusters’ first at-home VR title, here’s how the studio describes it:

Strap on your proton pack and step into the world of Ghostbusters in immersive virtual reality. Run your Ghostbusters HQ in a new city, San Francisco, and unravel a rich mystery in a new chapter for the Ghostbusters universe. Wield iconic equipment as you track, blast, and trap ghosts in gripping encounters across an extensive and engrossing campaign. Go it alone, or as a team with up to three friends in co-op to defeat a ghastly new threat – the Ghost Lord. Continue the Ghostbusters’ legacy, protect the city from fiendish ghosts, and experience all the humor and frights from the beloved franchise.

Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord is set to launch on Quest 2 and PSVR 2 at some point this fall (see update). Notably, the game’s first trailer was captured on PC, so it’s possible we may also see a release on SteamVR as well, although nDreams hasn’t confirmed as much.

In the meantime, you can wishlist the game on PSVR 2 here and Quest 2 here.

Location-Based Ghostbusters VR Experience Coming To 400 Venues This Year

Sony Pictures Virtual Reality announced a new location-based Ghostbusters VR experience developed by Hologate for its Arena and Blitz platforms around the world.

It’s called Ghostbusters VR Academy and it will launch across 400 venues across the rest of this year, available as two separate experiences.

The experience is described as a “fully immersive training simulator broken up into two distinct games, set in the world of Ghostbusters.” As you can see in the concept art above, Hologate’s location-based VR offering involves one standing, roomscale-like experience (Arena) and a second VR driving simulator apparatus (Blitz), also pictured below.

For Ghostbusters VR Academy, the Arena section will let players “strap on their proton packs and work together as a team in high-risk ghost encounter scenarios.” For the Blitz section, players can use the driving apparatus to get behind the wheel of a new prototype flying ECTO vehicle. You’ll pilot the vehicle through the Ghostbusters universe alongside other players and “compete to see who is the fastest, most skillful driver in a high-speed ghostly race.”

Sony Pictures Virtual Reality will publish the experience across the 400 venues globally where Hologate experiences are available. That includes venues in 38 countries, including many across the United States and others in Europe, Australia, Asia, South America and New Zealand.

Ghostbusters VR Academy is a different experience entirely to the recently-announced Ghostbusters VR game coming to Quest 2. That title is being handled by Fracked and Phantom developer nDreams, with both co-op and single player modes. You can read more about that game here.

Ghostbusters VR Confirmed For Release On PSVR 2

Sony Pictures Virtual Reality confirmed that Ghostbusters VR will also release on PSVR 2, after it was announced for Meta Quest 2 (formerly Oculus Quest 2) back in April.

That’s pretty much the only scrap of info we have on the PSVR 2 version for now — there’s no specific release date, but then again, we don’t even know when PSVR 2 itself is slated to launch yet.

There’s also no release date for the Quest 2 version of the game either, but we do know that it will be a Quest 2 exclusive at launch. The game was announced at the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase in April, which featured a line-up of games that were all said to release within a year of the showcase airing. At the latest then (and presuming no delays) Ghostbusters VR would be set for April 2023, with a PSVR 2 release sometime after that.

So far, details on the game are scarce. We know that it will feature both single and multiplayer modes with cooperative gameplay, but little else. You can view the first trailer embedded above, but bear in mind that it’s a cinematic trailer rendered in the game’s engine — it isn’t actual 1:1 gameplay footage.

Today also marks the anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film, released in 1984. The PSVR 2 release isn’t the only piece of VR news announced today for Ghostbusters fans either. Sony Pictures Virtual Reality also announced a new location-based VR experience called Ghostbusters VR Academy. This will let up to 4 players don proton packs and pilot a flying ECTO vehicle at over 400 locations worldwide — more info here.

‘Ghostbusters VR’ Releasing on PSVR 2, Out-of-home Games Coming to Hologate VR Arcades

Commemorating the release of the original Ghostbusters (1984) film, Sony Pictures Virtual Reality (SPVR) today announced a pair of out-of-home VR games collectively called Ghostbusters VR Academy, coming to HOLOGATE locations worldwide. Sony also announced its previously revealed Ghostbusters VR at-home game is coming to PSVR 2 in addition to Quest 2.

Ghostbusters VR Academy—built by Hologate and published by SPVR—is rolling out to 400+ of the company’s locations worldwide by the end of 2022, the companies say. Hologate has designed out-of-home Ghostbusters games for both its free-roaming ARENA shooter platform and BLITZ, its motion simulator platform.

In the ARENA game, Hologate visitors will engage in Ghostbusters training by strapping on a proton pack and cooperating as a team in what the company calls “high-risk ghost encounter scenarios – all under the safeguard of academy grounds.”

The BLITZ game is a bit more of a thrill ride, where visitors race each other around in a prototype ECTO vehicle. Hologate’s motion platforms can perform up to one meter (3.2 feet) of vertical lift and a 30-degree movement in every direction.

Ghostbusters VR, a four-player cooperative adventure VR game initially announced for Quest 2, is also headed to PlayStation VR2. There’s no release date for PSVR 2 just yet, so we aren’t sure when the game is scheduled to arrive.

First unveiled at the Meta Gaming Showcase in April, Ghostbusters VR is a four-player co-op game developed by veteran VR studio nDreams. In it, players solve mysteries in the Ghostbusters universe while tracking, blasting, and trapping ghosts across what the studio calls an “extensive and engrossing campaign.”

Ghostbusters VR Isn’t Linked To Afterlife, May Feature Character Customization

The recently-announced Ghostbusters VR isn’t a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Sony Pictures VR’s Jake Zim confirmed as much to IGN’s Taylor Lyles. “It is not a sequel to Afterlife,” he said. “It does not go deeper directly into the stories. It is a new story, it’s a new concept, but it ties closely back into lots of things that people loved from Afterlife and the broader Ghostbusters world itself.”

We may see plenty of easter eggs calling back to older movies, then, but Zim confirmed there likely wouldn’t be any returning characters. Instead, Ghostbusters VR will feature a brand new story set in San Francisco, with a new team of budding Ghostbusters setting up shop.

Providing more quotes on her Twitter feed, Lyles also noted that character customization looked to be included in the game. “[C]haracter customization is a safe assumption to make right now,” Zim said. Given the game’s focus on cooperative multiplayer (though it can also be played in solo modes), this definitely seems like a great opportunity for some personalized outfits.

Currently we know that Ghostbusters VR is on the way to Quest 2. Last week we confirmed that it’ll be a launch exclusive for the platform, but nDreams says it will talk about coming to other headsets at a later date. Zim also reiterated that it was in VR’s interests to be on many platforms, adding: “[I]f you look at the larger ecosystem of how important the whole space is in terms of all the platforms and all the channels and growing the space, there’s so much room to grow, I think that’s really important for [Sony Pics VR], as a company, to consider.”

A launch window hasn’t been confirmed at this time.

Ghostbusters VR Focused On Quest 2 ‘At Launch’

The just-announced Ghostbusters VR game is indeed a launch exclusive for Quest 2, but other platforms may arrive later on.

Following the game’s reveal at the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase yesterday we reached out to developer nDreams to ask if the game would only be coming to Quest 2. “We’re focusing on Meta Quest 2 at launch,” the studio told us, “but we will share more information on the availability of the game on other platforms at a later date.”

It’s perhaps a little unexpected to see Ghostbusters VR coming first to Quest 2 given that the IP is owned by Columbia Pictures, a subsidiary of Sony Pictures. The game’s also being published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality. Though this division doesn’t fall under the operations of Sony Interactive Entertainment, which runs PlayStation and the PSVR headset, one might have assumed the close links would make a PSVR release a priority.

That said Sony Pictures VR has released games for all headsets in the past, so we equally wouldn’t have expected the game to be a PSVR exclusive.

Either way, it still seems possible that we’ll see the game on PSVR and/or PSVR 2 at some point. For now, we know that Ghostbusters VR will offer a full campaign with both solo and cooperative support for up to four players. You’ll team up with friends to build a new Ghostbusters HQ in San Francisco, using iconic gadgets to hunt supernatural spirits.

The VOID Expands With 25 New Locations Coming To URW Shopping Centers

Star Wars, Ralph Breaks VR and other attractions are on their way to 25 new locations with a partnership between shopping center operator URW (Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield) and VR attraction operator The VOID.

The VOID’s loading area features a backpack PC and VR headset visitors wear before heading onto the VR stage.

The partnership will see four temporary “pop-up” locations for The VOID attractions opening in August and September at the Westfield World Trade Center in New York, Westfield San Francisco Centre, Westfield Santa Anita in the Los Angeles area and Westfield UTC in San Diego. Those pop-ups will eventually be replaced by permanent locations, according to an announcement, with additional permanent spots planned for URW centers in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Chicago, Copenhagen, Oberhausen, San Jose, Stockholm and Vienna.

For those unfamiliar, The VOID is a Utah-based company which produced a series of VR-based adventures employing powerful haptic effects, smells, sights and sounds together for memorable visits. The company debuted with Ghostbusters and they’ve since added horror story Nicodemus as well as Star Wars and others.

We’ve been waiting for The VOID to announce its next set of experiences. Late last year the company teased new Marvel-based content coming this year. The latest announcement mentions partnerships between The VOID and both Disney and Sony, so we’ll be curious to see what comes of those agreements. The VOID’s footprint seems to be expanding globally pretty quickly and dding a slate of fresh content could bring back a lot of repeat visits to The VOID.

Ghostbusters Celebrate 35th Anniversary With AR

Ghostbusters has become a huge franchise since the original move aired back in June 1984, seeing sequels, comics, videogames and of course, the beloved animated series. The Ghostbusters are now hunting spooks in augmented reality (AR).

The launch of the upcoming AR videogame is designed to form part of the celebrations around the 35th Anniversary of the Ghostbusters franchise, with Sony Pictures and Ghost corps announcing a range of special events and new releases.

One of the biggest events is the Ghostbusters Fan Fest, which is due to take place on 8th-9th June, 2019. Ivan Reitman, director/producer of the 1984 film Ghostbusters and principal of Ghost Corps, said, “It’s immensely gratifying to see the way the fans have embraced our movie over the past 34 years, in a way we could never have imagined in 1984. The credit goes to the fans – collected in over 1,000 fan groups globally – who have kept the flame burning for decades. I’m excited to see you all at Ghostbusters Fan Fest one year from today!”

Before that, Ghostbusters fans will have the chance to play the Ghostbusters World AR videogame, which has been created as a collaboration between Sony Pictures Consumer Products, Ghost Corps, publisher FourThirtyThree Inc. (4:33) and developer Next Age.

Ghostbusters World will let players face off against hundreds of ghosts drawn from all different aspects of the franchise, including the films, TV shows, comics books and videogames. The companies involves in its creation say it will involve the latest AR technology. Visitors to San Diego Comic-Con in July will be able to try out a public demo build at the event.

The Ghostbusters franchise has been featured in immersive experiences before, notably THE VOID’s Ghostbusters: Dimensons and an episodic adventure called Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring.
