Get a Free Gear VR with Gear 360 Purchase

Samsung UK, like many retailers, has already begun what was traditional known as the ‘January Sale’. From today, purchases of a Gear 360 camera will also include a Samsung Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) free of charge.

Samsung Gear 360 - Gear VR

The Gear 360, launched earlier this year, allows users to capture high-resolution images (up to 30MP) and video in 360 degrees. You can record directly from the Gear 360 or remotely, using your Samsung Galaxy smartphone, then relive all the footage with the Samsung Gear VR HMD. Users of the Gear 360 can shoot in live mode, stitch 360 video footage with ease and share online directly from a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

In the new sale, available on Samsung’s UK retail website, you can receive a free Samsung Gear VR (Model 2) HMD with a purchase of a Gear 360 camera, priced at £349 GBP. Another available offer is the inclusion of a FOC Samsung EVO Plus MicroSD Card (128 GB) in place of the Samsung Gear VR for the same price.

In addition to this promotion and sales on the digital stores for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, more sales are expected for a variety of virtual reality (VR) related products over the holiday period. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the highlights.

Samsung Black Friday Deals Include Gear 360 Camera

You can’t failed to have missed it but it’s Black Friday everywhere. Lots of limited time, day, weekend deals to tempt every man, woman and dog into a purchase. VRFocus has pretty much covered most of the virtual reality (VR) related deals going, but there are still more available. The latest is from Samsung, which has a range of products discounted on its store. There’s no discount on Gear VR but the Gear 360 camera does have a nice chunky discount on offer.

If you’ve been thinking about picking up Samsung’s dual lens, 360-degree camera, then for the first time this year its available with £100 GBP off the normal price. That drops it down from £349 to £249 for a significant saving. But it does seem that discount is country specific as looking at the US store the Gear 360 is still the standard price of $349.99 USD. And not only do UK customers get a discount, their order also includes free delivery.

Samsung Gear 360 - Gear VR

The Gear 360 launched back in April in select countries, joining the growing ranks of consumer level 360-degree cameras. These include Insta360 Nano, Ricoh Theta S, 360fly, and more. Samsung’s model features two 15 megapixel cameras with F/2.0 fish-eye lenses that each capture 195 degree content, recorded in high resolution (3840×1920) as MP4’s. There’s video and photo modes as well as time lapse video and looping video options, all of which are automatically stitched by the device’s accompanying smartphone app. The device boasts a 1,350mAh Li-ion battery and can shoot up to seven hours of content using a 128GB microSD card.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Gear 360, reporting back with any new updates.

The New York Times to Publish Daily 360° Videos Using Samsung Gear 360’s

Towards the end of 2015 The New York Times (NYT) entered the virtual reality (VR) arena with a bang, launching its NYT VR app for iOS and Android devices alongside a massive promotional giveaway of Google Cardboard headsets. Today the news outlet announced the launch of The Daily 360, a new digital journalism project in partnership with Samsung.

The Daily 360, produced by The Times newsroom will deliver at least one 360-degree video everyday. Samsung has provided NYT journalists around the world with Gear 360 cameras and equipment to use while reporting.

The first video available today takes viewers to Sana, Yemen to see the first-hand effects of the ongoing conflict there. The footage was shot by New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Tyler Hicks and Times Middle East correspondent Ben Hubbard.

“From Snowfall to The Upshot to The Displaced, the award-winning VR film that blazed the trail in VR journalism, The Times has been the leader in visual digital storytelling,” said Dean Baquet, executive editor, The New York Times. “Whether The Times is on the campaign trail, the front lines of Aleppo, or in the front row at Fashion Week, The Daily 360 brings you there to bear witness with us.”

The project aims to be the first attempt at daily 360-degree reporting from a major publication. In the run up to this months presidential election, NYT correspondents will be producing footage from both the campaign trail and from the main battleground locations.

“It’s because of Samsung’s support and filming technology that we’re able to give global audiences a true sense of what it means when The New York Times is covering the breadth of what’s happening in the world,” added Meredith Kopit Levien, executive vice president and chief revenue officer, The New York Times Company. “Last year we delivered the VR experience to the masses, along with dozens of VR films since then, but now it’s time to make 360 video a part of the daily news report, as common as text or interactives.”

The Daily 360 will be published on multiple platforms, including NYTimes.com, its mobile and VR apps, as well as to Samsung VR.

“Virtual reality storytelling isn’t just exciting and immersive, it can forge a lasting and empathetic connection between viewers and subjects,” said Marc Mathieu, chief marketing officer at Samsung Electronics America. “In collaborating with The New York Times, we want Samsung’s innovative products and services to show how coverage of the world’s most important stories can be made richer, more useful, and more human when augmented by 360-degree experiences.”

Samsung’s Gear 360 Finally Comes To More Retailers This Week

Samsung’s Gear 360 Finally Comes To More Retailers This Week

With Facebook’s compelling social VR experience incoming, you might want to be looking into a 360 camera in the near future. Fortunately, Samsung’s offering has just become more widely available.

The electronics giant has this week announced that its Gear 360 panoramic camera is now on sale at retailers around the US including AT&T, Best Buy, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless. Previously the company had only sold the device at select events and through its own online store but kept it away from third-party retailers despite putting a big spotlight on it at its developer conference earlier in the year. The device costs $349, making it one of the more affordable 360 degree cameras on the market right now. Those in the UK can also currently pick it up from Samsung directly.

Gear 360 consists of two 15 megapixel fisheye lenses that stitch together to create spherical, immersive videos and images. They capture video at a resolution of 3840 x 1920 at 30fps. Any content captured with the device can be viewed with Samsung’s Gear VR headset and on its more recent smartphones (not including the now deceased Galaxy Note 7). But this type of content could soon have an important function for Oculus Rift owners too.

Earlier this month at the Oculus Connect 3 developer conference Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg showcased new VR features for the social networking site that allow users to put on a Rift, pick up a pair of Oculus Touch controllers and then meet with friends as virtual avatars surrounded by 360 degree images and videos. Friends could easily swap between locations they were visiting, jumping to an image of Mars, the Facebook offices, and even a video of Zuckerberg’s home.

We don’t know when these features will be available to Rift users, but having your own 360 camera so that you can decide where to visit might not be such a bad idea.
