Preview: ZOLO – Zombies Only Live Once – And for Good Reason

Sometimes it’s difficult to understand a developer’s thought process. Some will release title after title hoping something will stick, while others spend so long tweaking and fine-tuning their experience that half the fan base has moved on. Game Cooks certainly seems to be veering towards the former, as it now has three Early Access titles on Steam, the most recent being ZOLO – Zombies Only Live Once, a sort of zombie brawler.

ZOLO

Featuring a low poly design that’s supposed to mimic the titles fun, light-hearted overtones, ZOLO – Zombies Only Live Once is very much a one trick pony in its current guise. Unlike most zombie experiences where you’re trying to pop their brains with a well-executed headshot or de-limb their necrotic bodies with a chainsaw, this is all about some good old-fashioned melee action, punching mostly.

With its one area to roam around the zombies spawn from three points, none of which you can get too close to spawn kill as the killing floor is a fixed size. Once the foolish creatures do start to wander in its time to start punching away, hitting them as far as possible for maximum points. There’s even an option for some spiked knuckle goodness for extra power and distance – like a cross between knuckle dusters and Wolverine’s claws.

For those extra skilful and with a keen eye, you’ll notice several multipliers dotted around the level. Ranging in size and multiplication, these are designed to get you up those leaderboards. However, while you can punch these zombies into kingdom come, actually trying to control their direction is somewhat problematic, success generally coming from sheer luck more than anything else.

ZOLO

There’s only a set number of zombies to face, some of which charge at you while others stand back and throw projectiles. With that in mind, there are other ways of upping those points. After so many kills a kind of rage mode unlocks, where those spiky knuckles turn red to make combo kills easier, or use them as single shot rockets.

Succeed in killing even more in quick succession and you can unlock limited ammo weapons like shotguns and AK47’s. These can then be used to shoot zombies being airdropped in.

Before all of this, you’ll need to master the control scheme which uses the same idea found in Games Cooks’ Vindicta, where you swing your arms for momentum. There are two options, one which uses your gaze as the direction and the other which uses where the controllers are pointing. Neither works particularly well in the small confines of the area you’re given. Having a free locomotion strafe option would be bliss, but it’s not there.

ZOLO

ZOLO – Zombies Only Live Once really is in its early days of Steam Early Access. While the premise sounds fine, its implementation is less so. The controls need to be fine-tuned, and the gameplay is just too shallow for repeated sessions at this point. It would have been great to see Game Cooks put more effort into Vindicta or Highway Madness than release another EA title, both of which VRFocus would recommend looking at first.

Game Cooks Discuss VINDICTA and VR Arcades

Announced back in June this year, Game Cooks have been working on VINDICTA for Steam VR on HTC Vive and is now also available on Oculus Rift. VRFocus speak to Anthony Geara, Lead 3D Artist at Game Cooks about the videogame at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

The videogame is a virtual reality (VR), first-person shooter (FPS) where the player takes on the role of Agent V, who has been sent to infiltrate the fortified headquarters of the sinister UB Industries. UB Industries are looking to build a robot army in an attempt to take over the world. A whole variety of robots face the player, from the expected humanoid robot to big mechanical spiders, all of which need to be taken out so UB Industries plan can be foiled.

Geara explains that you have around four to eight hours of gameplay with around 12-13 weapons ranging from pistols, shotguns, assault rifles to the grenade launcher. Now that the title is available for both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, whilst it may be that Game Cooks are working on a multiplayer and co-op of VINDICTA for VR arcades.

Your Oculus Rift is About to Become a Battleground in Vindicta

Indie developers Game Cooks originally launched first-person shooter (FPS) Vindicta on HTC Vive as an Early Access title. It has since received several updates, and is now ready for Oculus Rift users to try.

Vindicta puts the player in the role of Agent V, whose mission is to infiltrate the headquarters of evil mega corporation UB Industries, who are trying to build a robot army in an attempt at world domination. The player will face a wide variety of robotic foes, from hulking humanoid robots to huge mechanical spiders. Movement is handled by players swinging their arms back and forth as though they were running, a similar system to what has been used by Sprint Vector or Dash Dash Run. If that is a bit much for you, and alternative locomotion system is available with trackpad control.

Last month, Game Cooks introduced a large new update for Vindicta, which introduced an area called The Hive, which added fast-paced arena fights alongside new puzzles to be solved and new enemy types like the floating alarm detector and electrified spiders along with new weapons and various bug fixes and improvements.

The Oculus Rift version is now available through Steam with a special discounted price of $12.89 (USD) designed to entice Oculus Rift users to try out the title. The Oculus Touch controllers will be required to play.

Further information and updates can be found on the Steam store page.

VRFocus will bring you further information on Vindicta as it becomes available.

Vindicta Confirmed for September Release on Oculus Rift

If you own an Oculus Rift and enjoy the odd first-person shooter (FPS) or two, then you’ll might be pleased to hear that indie developer Game Cooks will be releasing its videogame Vindicta on the headset next month.

Game Cooks originally launched Vindicta on HTC Vive back in June as an Early Access title, and since then has received additional content and a price reduction. The Oculus Rift release on 14th September will not only add support for the headset but also improvements and bug fixes. On top of that there will be another discount, reducing the price from $14.99 USD down to $12.89.

The storyline of Vindicta revolves around the player taking the role of Agent V, who has been sent to infiltrate the fortified headquarters of the sinister UB Industries, a company seeking to build a robot army in an attempt to take over the world. The player will encounter a variety of robotic foes, from humanoid robots to big mechanical spiders as they work through several levels.

To make it standout from the rest of the FPS crowd Vindicta employs a movement system, whereby players swing their arms to make them move – much like Survios’ Sprint Vector or Dash Dash Run! – which hasn’t been used on this genre of videogame before. And for those that don’t want to swing their arms around there’s always the trackpad option.

As further details are released VRFocus will keep you updated.

Game Cooks’ HTC Vive FPS VINDICTA now Available on Steam Early Access

If you love first-person shooters (FPS) the HTC Vive has got you covered, with titles such as Raw Data, Island 359, Space Pirate Trainer and many more. Now there’s another to add to that list with Game Cooks releasing its first title for HTC Vive, VINDICTA.

Hoping to offer something new to the ever growing and crowded genre, VINDICTA’s unique selling point is its movement system, whereby players swing their arms to make them move – a lot like people do naturally. And for those that don’t want to swing their arms around there’s always the trackpad option.

Vindicta screenshot 3

While the developer states that VINDICTA has ‘a strong stealth component’ it does arm players with a deadly mixture of weaponry, from handguns and rifles to shotguns and cluster grenades – there’s just over a dozen in total. Using these creatively will not only ensure maximum destruction but also loads of points, so players can compare scores for a bit of competition in the single-player title.

The storyline of VINDICTA revolves around the player taking the role of Agent V, who has been sent to infiltrate the fortified headquarters of the sinister UB Industries, a company seeking to build a robot army in an attempt to take over the world. The player will encounter a variety of robotic foes, from humanoid robots to big mechanical spiders as they work through four levels – plus a tutorial – which Game Cooks estimates at 6 – 8 hours of gameplay.

“We worked closely with members of the VR community to help shape the game launching today, and we’ll continue to develop and refine the game alongside them after early access launch,” said Lebnan Nader, CEO and Founder of Game Cooks.  ” We believe in VR and are proud of what we are building.”

VINDICTA is now available on Steam Early Access with a limited time discount available. Until 26th June you’ll be able to get 33 percent off the standard price, dropping the cost down from £22.99 GBP/$29.99 USD to £15.40/$20.09.

Game Cooks Confirm Launch Date for Vindicta

The development team at Game Cooks have announced that upcoming HTC Vive first-person shooter Vindicta will be launching on 20th June, 2017. The company will also be at E3 to demo the title ahead of the launch.

The title will be released on to Steam Early Access with support for the HTC Vive, though the developers are hoping to be able to release an Oculus Rift version later on, along with other additional features such as multi-player support, leaderboards, new enemy types and additional weapons.

The plot of Vindicta involves the player taking the role of Agent V, who has been sent to infiltrate the fortified headquarters of the sinister UB Industries, who are seeking to build a robot army in an attempt to take over the world. A whole variety of robots face the player, from the expected humanoid robot to big mechanical spiders, all of which need to be taken out so UB Industries plan can be foiled.

The gameplay has been designed so that stealth, dodging and tactical movement such as finding cover are important skills when making your way through the UB Industries base. A variety of weapons are available, with the standard handgun, through the high-powered rifles up to cluster grenades.

As the title will be going in to Early Access, the development team at Game Cooks are keen to engage with the community to improve the experience, encouraging players to share their thoughts and suggestions with the development team through Twitter, Facebook and other social media.

It has not yet been revealed what price Vindicta will be on launch, but the creators have confirmed that the price will remain the same for Early Access and full release. Further information can be found on the official Steam page.

VRFocus will bring you further information on Vindicta and other Steam Early Access VR titles when it becomes available.

Launch Trailer for HTC Vive Title VINDICTA Released

Last week VRFocus reported on indie developer Game Cooks announcing its HTC Vive first-person shooter (FPS) VINDICTA at the Virtual Reality Los Angles (VRLA) event next week. Now the studio has released a launch trailer for the videogame detailing what the action will look like.

This is Game Cooks second video for VINDICTA with the first one only 40 seconds long, merely giving a teasing look look at the gameplay on offer. With this second release there’s plenty more to see as it clocks it at over two minutes.

For the launch trailer the studio has ramped up the production values with a far more cinematic opening, showcasing some of the enemies and locations on offer. Then it’s straight into the action with loads of gunplay available. Being a HTC Vive title VINDICTA is all about dual-wielding, players are able to mix and match pistols, SMG’s, assault rifles, grenades and more. There’s also two-handed heavy machine guns for when they need that extra firepower and ammo capacity.

What isn’t as noticable – there are brief moments in the latter half of the video – is the type of movement system VINDICTA utilises. As VRFocus has previously reported, VINDICTA uses a swinging arm mechanic to walk about, aiming for a more natural system that most people should be akin to.

While Game Cooks has confirmed a June 2017 Steam Early Access release for the HTC Vive, the studio does plan on expanding support. Once the early access is up and running and the team has received player feedback, Oculus Rift support will be looked at. Other plans include multiplayer, a co-op mode, leaderboards, more weapons and levels.

In terms of how much game time will be available: “The Early Access version will include a good 6 to 8 hours continuous gameplay and will include over a dozen enemy types to fight, over a dozen type of weapons to use in your fight to take down UB Industries and 5 to 6 full levels,” notes the studio.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of VINDICTA, reporting back with further updates.

Vindicta Now Launching In June, New Trailer Revealed

Vindicta Now Launching In June, New Trailer Revealed

VR has lots of wave shooters, but is lacking in full FPS campaigns. That’s why we’re so interested in Vindicta from Game Cooks, and this week’s launch trailer shows you why.

Vindicta is aiming to bring a full run n’ gun campaign to the HTC Vive, but it’s first going to launch in Early Access. The game was originally set for pre-release in April with four to six hours of gameplay, but the studio recently told UploadVR that it’s pushed that release back to June. The studio said this was to help incorporate some of the feedback it had recieved for the game when showcasing it at recent events like GDC.

There will be another chance to play the game soon, though, as Game Cooks is bringing it to VRLA on April 14th and 15th. The game’s got a Steam page now, too.

Vindicta casts players as an elite agent that infiltrates the facility of an evil corporation and takes down swarms of robotic enemies. We’re hoping for something that resembles Epic Games’ Robo Recall, only with support for full locomotion, which is something a lot of VR players that are used to smooth locomotion are requesting right now.

Game Cooks due to Demo VINDICTA at VRLA

Indie studio Game Cooks, the developer behind 3rd-person endless runner HOVR for Samsung Gear VR last year, will be demoing its last project, VINDICTA, to the Virtual Reality Los Angeles (VRLA) event next month.

A first-person shooter (FPS) for HTC Vive, VINDICTA has players infiltrating a robotic facility with the sole purpose of eradicating the mechanical menace and shutting down operations. Rather than going for the standard teleportation mechanic, or using the touchpad to walk around – which can induce sim sickness in some players – Game Cooks has gone for a more energetic movement system. Players have to swing their arms to wander about, taking ques from how people generally move their arms whilst walking, aiming for a more natural system.

Vindicta screenshot 2

As you’d expect from an FPS, Game Cooks has added an assortment of weapons, from hand guns and rifles, to cluster grenades and more, all of which can be dual wielded.

As part of the VRLA conference, the studio will be showcasing an advanced demo of VINDICTA, which was selected to be part of the show’s Indie Corner. As for when the title comes out, Game Cooks has scheduled a release date for June 2017.

Also heading to the event will be Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland and Unity CEO John Riccitiello offering keynote speeches, and Epic Games will be in attendance, talking about Unreal Engine and Robo Recall. This week also saw VRLA organisers announce a mixed reality (MR) Easter egg hunt that’ll utilise Microsoft’s HoloLens headset.

The VRLA takes place from Friday 14th to Saturday 15th April at the Los Angeles Convention Centre. Tickets are still available with a business-focused 2-Day Pro Pass at $299 USD and a 1-Day Pass for Saturday priced at $40.
